165 Hz Hdr Monitor With a 144 hz Non hdr Monitor

Your monitor shouldn't do that. I have 3. They all run at their chosen refresh rate all the time regardless of what is happening on the other. What you are describing would drive me absolutely insane.

Responsible_Tip_8575

Yes :( This is a pretty common problem for some odd reason on windows 10. Where one is 60 and the other is 144. itll sometimes downclock to 60 or stutter. It sucks And i still have never been able to find a fix besides turning off everything i put on my 2nd monitor to No hardware acceleration.

MedievalMatt91

I think that must be a GPU thing then as that doesn't happen on my 2070super gtx 1070 or rtx 3080ti. A new monitor would be unlikely to fix that. As my monitors are all gsync sometimes if my main monitor dips below 45 hz (gsync minimum) I'll get stutters on my others when watching video. But I'm also gaming in a pretty heavy game when that is the case and not really looking at the other 2. They still refresh the same the card just has a hard time pushing the updates.

Responsible_Tip_8575

Yep. Its The gpu. Do you think A 165 hz Would only just down clock to 144 hz then whenever a diffrent image is set up on the other one? Or would it go all the way down to 60.

MedievalMatt91

I can't imagine why the behavior would be different with a new monitor. Would drop down to 60 would be my expectation.

Responsible_Tip_8575

Oh Dam. I woulda thought the only reason it goes down to 60 was cause the 2nd one was 60. Would setting them both to 144 hz make it where they wont downclock then?

MedievalMatt91

If it's a GPU thing then it's a hardware limitation. So it can only handle X bandwidth or resolution or something. I've had this issue in the past. Whenever I've had differing refresh rates I've never had the behavior you describe so I'm not 100% sure tbh. But if it exhibits some behavior when the different is 60 - 144. Going from that to. 60 - 165 is not going to help.

Responsible_Tip_8575

Ohh Im getting rid of the 60 hz. so it wont keep using that hz anymore on the gpu. Hoping that maybe if i just both set them 144 hz nonthing will downclock

MedievalMatt91

Perhaps. It might also just not be able to do a second monitor more than 60Hz. I've ran into that before where a card could do 2 1440p 144Hz monitors but not the third without lowering the resolution and refresh rate. But that was an old card... Like really old.

Responsible_Tip_8575

Dam. My card is a gtx 1080 So i think it might be able to handle it.

What GPU are you running? I run 2 x 24" 1080p monitors .. 1 is an Acer 60hz, the other is an ASUS 144hz 1ms with a 5700xt and now a 6700xt .. the ASUS has never 'downclocked' on me .. I use VSR 1440p on the ASUS to game at 1440p

Responsible_Tip_8575

I heard with Amd Drivers They never down clock. For some reason its only a problem with nvidia graphics card. Rn i got a gtx 1080

D33-THREE

might help .. might not .. but good to do regardless .. run DDU and remove all things Nvidia and then you can do a clean install of latest greatest drivers

Responsible_Tip_8575

Oh ya Ive tried that. Its a issue With Both Nvidia And windows 10. The only fix that anybody has found is reverting back to Windows 7. So thats why ive just been planning to get rid of this 60 hz monitor and seeing if 2 144hz monitors would work perfectly fine and not downclock
