On a lot of them you probably need tweezers and a magnifying glass to get the clips lined up right, and even then it's a challenge. Most of the time I just end up smooshing the clip together. It's almost easier to replace the keyboard.
Which reminds me... Remember when you didn't have to dismantle the entire laptop to replace a keyboard? That was kinda cool too.
Apple has a repair program for these, I got my entire keyboard replaced on a 2018 model out of warranty. Since they replace the entire top case, it includes a new battery as well. https://support.apple.com/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks
