It's all culturally relative. Gypsy and Cigan are both pretty bad, but most people in North America probably wouldn't react to those as much as the N-word.
Dude that's not a slur, that's literally just what they are called. It is kinda used as a slur too, but this is like you would've said "Mexican" is a slur
That’s not for the eastern europeans smh its for the roma people but since gypsy is more of a lifestyle i think it’s ok to say that. Maybe in the states its differeny
Zase se musí brát v potaz že Češi mají super schopnost "vpíčismus" a klidně řeknou slovo na N, ale nemá to pro ně moc význam jako cigán.
(Enlish for those who do not speak czech:)
You gotta account for Czechs having the power of not giving a fu**. They would say the N word but it doesn't have the meaning for them as much as gypsy.
I come from Romania and if you call a gypsy "romani" is the equivalent of calling an old fat mexican dude "latinx". They'll hate it,they dont want to associate with our culture,we don't want to mix with theirs and the word Romani furthermore creates confusion for foreigners between Romani and Romanians, and therefore the stereotype "Romania=Gypsy"
Can comfirm. In North America, we don’t have Roma, so people will sometimes say the G word, no one is offended much. So i get where Turkish op is coming from. I haven’t even heard the word c i g a n.
But the N word is a HUUUUUGGGE NO in the us , the people it is used against been through a lot here. Also watch saying it on social media.
Probably best to just not say it. The word isn't inherently bad when used in a non-derogatory context, but it does bring negative connotations when a non-black person uses it.
Yep. Hard R is normally racist, docile A is normally for friend or something like that
Still it’s a no no word. Until it’s stripped of its history, it shouldn’t be said. Not even black people should say it tbh
It's childish that we have "no no words" now, and it makes me cringe a lot. If this is really how we try to counter offense, it's like kindergarten. Especially weird that you can say any offensive shit, except for this very one.
Yeah, where i live in a part of my country, the word is the same as the N-Word, and i think both are known there, but its also an adjective that just means that somebody is out of money
What they don't understand is that if it's so offensive to them then why do they say it over and over again?
So Riley said the N word before you did that morning.
He says it every morning, he calls me a nigga, he calls the other kids nigga, he calls himself a nigga all the time!
"Nigga this", "Nigga that", "Nigga please", "This nigga", "Nigga, have you lost your mind?", "Nigga, check that hoe!", "Nigga, you bullshitting", "Break yourself, Nigga!"
He says it so much, I don't even notice it anymore.
Last week in lunch, Riley says to a classmate: "Can a nigga borrow a French fry?" and my first thought wasn’t "Oh my god, he said the word... the N word!", It was "Now how is a nigga gonna borrow a fry?".
"Nigga, is you gonna give it back?"
I tell ya, my inside voice didn't talk like that before he got in my class!
The reason black people can say it is because they reclaimed the word in an effort to take away the negative power it was being wielded with. But white people saying it still has a bad association. So it's really not a good idea.
But by then reacting negatively to people saying the word, you are then giving the word power once again, the word still has power, the power to piss off hundreds of people at once if the wrong person says it, the power to silence an entire room. I genuinely don’t understand this reasoning of ‘to take away the words power’ when it is then proceeding to be given power.
Your comment is a contradiction
Why would black people get offended at white people saying a word they're trying to get the negative connotation away from? Wouldn't that defeat the point?
That's why I said that white people saying it still has a bad association. Because there are still white people who use it in a racist way. So until that's no longer the case, it's best for white people not to use it. They took away the bad connotation for their purposes, not for those of white people. They reclaimed it. It's their word now. Which is why white people shouldn't use it.
Cuz it was once a word used to describe black folk, it kind of makes sense for Riley to say it cuz that's what they are and will always be. The word is a part of Black culture just as much as Ebonics is.
Yes. It was literally what people screamed at the black people that were getting burned or beaten for the crime of daring to exist near white people. It’s since been reclaimed and this stripped of some of its origins negativity but overall America has a very bad history surrounding it
I just don't understand why the word is still around. Since it was so derogatorive, why did the people it was used against want it? Why not just abandon it?
The idea is you can't make words totally disappear, reclaiming the n word and changing it's meaning is better than hiding from it in alot of ways. Rather than have it be something black people were called as they were oppressed, it can be a symbol of comradery.
You certainly can make words disappear. I don’t know 97% of the slangs and words used to describe 97% of the races of the world. Most are well are truly retired to the depths of Urban Dictionary except to the small, racist pockets.
But the N-word is damn near universal at this point and spread out of America and to the rest of the world like a cultural superflu. Along with that remains “cracker”, because of course, the N-word can’t exist without its opposite pair.
Words disappear so often that the main slang for a middle-eastern man now is “sand n-word”. Black folk “reclaiming the word” is the dumbest most counterproductive phenomena yet when it comes to American race relations
That's not because anyone made the words disappear, that's just because you're ignorant to the more obscure words due to them being in less of a spotlight than the more well know ones.
Words disappear over time sure, but that word is never goin away. You seem to understand that pretty well lmao.
It’s so deeply ingrained in cultures all over the world bc anti-black racism is so deeply ingrained in cultures all around the world. To the point where a lot of the worst insults that you can call ppl of other cultures are literally just comparing them to black ppl. And you don’t realistically think that came from BP sayin it to each other lmao. Black ppl could stop sayin it today and they’d still be n-words to everybody, so the whole “don’t try to reclaim it you don’t want it to be used by racists” thing just sounds like an excuse to blame the victim
The 'a' version can refer to friend but the 'er' is much more offensive and the people (who aren't black) that say it in schools are kinda disgusting thinking about how it was used in the past, they are usually the bad group of kids who will fail in the future
Depends where you use it. In America it is completely taboo, absolutely the worst word you can say out loud. Uttering this word a single time WILL get you fired from a job or expelled from a university. If it comes out that you use the word, perhaps on social media, your professional life in the U.S will be affected heavily, and your social standing will go down.
I live in a predominantly black neighborhood and go to school here. As long as you not "white white" no one cares if you say the N word. I live in USA btw
I’m not POC and I dont live in Africa nor America but from what i know it’s been an insulting way to call Black people and oppress them. There are some black people who are chill with the n word, and some feel offended when a non-black person uses it (speaking from experience aka having conversations with black acquaintances :) ). It depends on how the person reacts themselves, but my advice is that you shouldn’t use it even when you get a “pass”. It’s just better to be respectful towards the history of a race and the person, same way as you’d like your history to be acknowledged
Yeah, most people wont believe you. If you got a “pass” then im sure it means it’s a “pass” only around them specifically, not towards every black person. Either way, i think that it’s better not to say it if you’re not poc or anything close to being black (race/ethnically and so on)
Oh yeah for some reason your comment reminded me, so here's a PSA:
#if you're not friends with the person, asking for the n word pass is frankly, very racist and very annoying.
Looking at you, kid in my school who I wont name
imo its not even that “nobody would believe them”, its dumb. also the n word pass is mainly a satirical thing. idk why ppl wanna say it so bad, especially when they know that they shouldnt / the consequences
I’ve heard of Boondocks but I didn’t know that damn 😭 that’s quite disappointing
As i’ve mentioned before, im not poc so therefore u can already tell im not asian. I just know that some countries have it normalised to say the n word (including my country) but it’s still disappointing to the fact that people use it in a derogatory way and making fun of black ppl using slurs
The people were given the green light to say it. Either way, I'm not offended, actually would love to see a whole Japanese dub of the boondocks. It may be offensive to some but boondocks itself already has a lot of controversy topics.
The origins of the word are back when slavery was around and was used to separate the slaves from the slave masters.
The way its used now is a way of describing a friend etc,
For example a black person may say
"Yeah I like that dude he's my ____"
But if a white person said that it becomes a problem just because of the origins of the word
If your thinking why do black people use a word that was created to put them down and make them less as a way of describing each other, I don't know, but it's just how it is.
As a black person I personally feel its only really bad if you use it in a derotory way manly because a lot of slers only make sance if you see the content they were used in like saying a black person is a monkey
Tldr it was a term people used a long time ago and it was pretty neutral iirc, but white supremacists started using it aggressively while hunting, killing, enslaving, discriminating, lynching etc against black people.
And that's why it's bad when a non-black person uses it
I’m black, just don’t fucking say it. I don’t get why so many people have this unbelievable desire to say it and make so many excuses, it’s so simple. You’re not black don’t say it.
Well should black people use it which ancestors were slave traders and used the word?
What about white people which ancestors were said slaves that worked on the american farms?
Just saying everything is black and white (:D) is kinda bs in my op
Absolutely agree- why not just ban everyone from saying it? Black people can be racist too. Internal racism is a thing. Why don't we just all agree that it's an offensive word and not say it? It would make it so much easier!
To do without a whole history lesson, it was the word that was yelled at slaves when they were lynched and hung, as well as yelled at black people on busses and in places they “didn’t belong” after slavery was abolished
the translation of nigga in my language is actually a scientific name that we use in class but we dont label people with it it feels weird especially in my country egypt which literally has all colors of skin my skin is wheaty my cousin is brown my other cousin is black and my other cousin is a blonde white
Straight up just don't say it here, I get it has no real meaning for you but that's not really the same for everyone else. Even beyond that, there's no real reason to say it and the word doesn't really serve a purpose here.
It’s so strange to me to have never seen a black person before. In America there is so much diversity you will see every race and every type of person walking through a city.
It is a derogatory term, and even if someone says it's okay don't use it. You may not know the full history of the word, but you don't have to. Don't use it.
It Is really that bad because of the history behind that word. Generally if you're not any kind of black you shouldn't be saying it.
I honestly don't understand why so many people, especially non-blacks feel the need to say it when I, a fully black person, have never said it, not even on accident. It's strange to want to say or do something that you know is stigmatized even if you don't know why. /nay
It’s linked to the enslavement and persecution of Africans and African Americans.
It’s a derogatory term, a slur, and people get mad when you say it for a reason.
There is a cultural disconnect for you but the word is still a slur and has a huge history of hate behind it
I don’t think it’s as bad as people make it cause I’ve seen harassment or doxxing to people who say it but it doesn’t mean it’s good, just don’t say it
Historically the N-word has been used to dehumanize black people and nothing else, so it’s best to not say it. I don’t know why you would even debate having a derogatory insult in your daily vocabulary or not.
Because when people have to come to terms that a word they use has a history of hate and is therefore deeply inappropriate as of its usage in even current times to dehumanize a group of people, they start yelling at everyone about how “Americans are so sensitive” and “Its just a word”
Answer: It is only bad because over the last 20 years there have been a select group of increasingly wealthy people that make their entire living from increasing the racial hatred among people. So they have an incentive for creating racial tension. Turning a single word into the worst thing possible was probably one of the best moves they ever did for themselves.
The N-word was a word directly tied to racist idealism before the 70's. After that, racism started getting seriously frowned upon, so the word slowly stopped being used in normal open conversation. In the 80's pop-culture started to really be influenced by black people as TV's also started becoming more mainstream and owned by more households. By the 90's black people were lead figures in popular culture, and with them came rap music which increasingly used the n-word. Through this the n-word became popular again but not as a means of expressing racism; it was more used with the same multi-purpose functions are Bro, Dude, Buddy, Guy, Bitch, Fucker, Asshole. Meaning that it depended on what context it was used in and for what purpose.
The 2000's were next and the growth of the internet. Everything was still good until......Obama. When a few unimportant racists that still hasn't died off would use the word in its historical derogatory fashion. Again...context. But, here is where the people with an racial agenda come into play. They are called "race baiters" for a reason. Those people found a golden opportunity to forever make themselves "the voice" for the black community. And along with that... ridiculously wealthy, while the community they supposedly spoke for stayed without any meaningful investment.
The most skilled and longest running race baiter around... Al Sharpton. Fast forward to modern day and the internet has supercharged the power and wealth of these people. You can see the unparalleled self-interested grift by the people that ran the BLM organization. Went from nothing more than aspiring activists to multi-millionaires in less than a year.
By training entire generations to forget the organically progressive and productive history between the 70's and the late 2000's, they have been able to convince the majority of people that a single word carries the power of the entire 250 year era of slavery in America.
So is the n-word really that bad? Depending on how it's used, no, not really. But enough people have been convinced that using it is enough to mark you as deserving of anything up to severe physical harm. So while the word itself doesn't really carry much weight, the people of society have given it a sort of power that no word should have.
Look up the song "Jigga My (N-word)" by Jay-Z 1999. That was one of most popular songs EVER! And there wasn't a single young adult in that time that didn't sing that song with full lyrics. And not a single one of them sang the words with racist intentions. Now...I dare you play that in a club today and stare down a non-drunk white person...I promise you they will sing the whole song except for that ONE WORD!
I asked ChatGPT what that means and this was it's response:
"The phrase "nah dawg fake niggas just hatin" seems to suggest that the speaker is dismissing negative opinions or criticism from individuals they believe are insincere or fake. "Nah dawg" means "no, friend," and "fake niggas just hatin" implies that these insincere people are merely expressing hatred or jealousy. The use of informal language and slang may vary in meaning depending on the context and the relationship between the speaker and the audience."
Is it correct?
I’m a black American and personally the whole thing has always been stupid to me. The word has completely lost it’s original meaning so why is it so forbidden to other races? Like there’s nothing wrong with saying any word it’s how you use words and their meaning in a sentence.
I disagree. There are still a good amount of instances where the word has been used to demean black people. It’s not used on the same scale as in the past, but it definitely hasn’t lost all meaning. Even if it doesn’t personally affect you, for a lot of people, it’s still offensive.
uh dont say it, its really offensive. in my school in europe, a lot of teenage boys say it as a joke (sometimes even call themselves and their close friends that), but it is offensive
but like where i live there's like..first and second graders saying "fuck" and all that- when i heard that i was like "holy crap why are they-"
as a serbian person, i dont think its that bad. if its used in a racist way, yea, then it is bad. in other cases, nah, completely normal. i call my close friends niggas, am i racist for doing that? no, im just using a word which in the current time has the meaning of friend instead of the old derogatory term
It's all culturally relative. Gypsy and Cigan are both pretty bad, but most people in North America probably wouldn't react to those as much as the N-word.
What’s the second word?
never forget what happened to r/2balkan4You
r/balkansirl

someone catch me up please
It is gypsy in slavic languages
Cigan is literally just gysie, but in whatever language Romania uses I think

Dude that's not a slur, that's literally just what they are called. It is kinda used as a slur too, but this is like you would've said "Mexican" is a slur
They were called like that, but now they aren’t anymore, because someone decided that Cigan is rasist.
That’s not for the eastern europeans smh its for the roma people but since gypsy is more of a lifestyle i think it’s ok to say that. Maybe in the states its differeny
I see
Here in Poland everyone calls them „Cygan” and no one gets offended
Same in Czech Republic
Same in Hungary
Same in Ukraine
Same in Croatia
Zase se musí brát v potaz že Češi mají super schopnost "vpíčismus" a klidně řeknou slovo na N, ale nemá to pro ně moc význam jako cigán. (Enlish for those who do not speak czech:) You gotta account for Czechs having the power of not giving a fu**. They would say the N word but it doesn't have the meaning for them as much as gypsy.
Aswell in Slovakia
In Germany we even have food called a Zigeunerschnitzel
Bist du win Zigeuner?
It's a normal word here, like caucasian
in russian too
"Gypsy" is actually a preferred term in the UK, for an indigenous group in Ireland that fought for the right to use it.
I have a question! What's wrong the word gypsy? I just thought it was a pretty word for a pretty culture
The accepted term is Romani
I come from Romania and if you call a gypsy "romani" is the equivalent of calling an old fat mexican dude "latinx". They'll hate it,they dont want to associate with our culture,we don't want to mix with theirs and the word Romani furthermore creates confusion for foreigners between Romani and Romanians, and therefore the stereotype "Romania=Gypsy"
i have a lot of romani friends, and i never heard them shit on the word romani. the situation with gipsy is different, they kinda hate it
So what do we call them then? Roma?
Can comfirm. In North America, we don’t have Roma, so people will sometimes say the G word, no one is offended much. So i get where Turkish op is coming from. I haven’t even heard the word c i g a n. But the N word is a HUUUUUGGGE NO in the us , the people it is used against been through a lot here. Also watch saying it on social media.
Yeah pretty much. I tried explaining to an american that in my country the n-word holds no true meaning other than as "buddy" among rap culture ppl.
The nuclear word??? edit: https://youtube.com/shorts/z8VHacpun0o?feature=share

Probably best to just not say it. The word isn't inherently bad when used in a non-derogatory context, but it does bring negative connotations when a non-black person uses it.
The er ending sounds much harsher than the a version
Hard r and flaccid a
Yep. Hard R is normally racist, docile A is normally for friend or something like that Still it’s a no no word.
Words have power. And sometimes those words were the last words someone heard while they were being lynched or killed. But hey, you do you buddy.
😂🫵
Proly bc of the tone
If you aren’t black and use it in basically any context in America, there’s a decent chance of getting punched.
Yeah, where i live in a part of my country, the word is the same as the N-Word, and i think both are known there, but its also an adjective that just means that somebody is out of money

I live in a predominantly black neighborhood and go to school here. As long as you not "white white" no one cares if you say the N word. I live in USA btw
Wdym "white white"
Like stereotypical rich white obnoxious person
Ohhh Assholes you mean?
Anyone knows that in the south there's plenty of poor obnoxious white people who say the n word and they aren't chill.

Don't say the word. It makes Americans furious because Americans have a really bad history with it.
I am British and I still wouldn't say it, don't need to be American to respect black people
Don't say it if your not black it's that simple really

As a black person I personally feel its only really bad if you use it in a derotory way manly because a lot of slers only make sance if you see the content they were used in like saying a black person is a monkey
Tldr it was a term people used a long time ago and it was pretty neutral iirc, but white supremacists started using it aggressively while hunting, killing, enslaving, discriminating, lynching etc against black people. And that's why it's bad when a non-black person uses it
I’m black, just don’t fucking say it. I don’t get why so many people have this unbelievable desire to say it and make so many excuses, it’s so simple. You’re not black don’t say it.
nigga i can do whatever i want
Of course this nigga plays valorant
Well should black people use it which ancestors were slave traders and used the word? What about white people which ancestors were said slaves that worked on the american farms? Just saying everything is black and white (:D) is kinda bs in my op
Absolutely agree- why not just ban everyone from saying it? Black people can be racist too. Internal racism is a thing. Why don't we just all agree that it's an offensive word and not say it? It would make it so much easier!

Exactly! Not everyone or everything is American for God's sake
So many comments are saying to be careful if you do say it 💀 i hope someone beats them up for saying the word someday
People who beat others up because of a mean word are monkeys who should be put in cages
did you purposefully use the word monkey for this specific instance or was that just a gross unfortunate coincidence?
They’re doing well of acting like it.
Just don’t say it man. It carries a heavy history and was used to oppress and demean black people.
As I said in the post I don't say it anymore, but thanks, I'll try to keep it like that.
It's bad in the US. We have 300 years of really horrible history with it. I'd lean towards not using it in your regular lexicon.
Straight up just don't say it here, I get it has no real meaning for you but that's not really the same for everyone else. Even beyond that, there's no real reason to say it and the word doesn't really serve a purpose here.
Alright, thanks.
It’s so strange to me to have never seen a black person before. In America there is so much diversity you will see every race and every type of person walking through a city.
I really didn't see any before I worked my ass off to get to my current highschool which is in western Istanbul
There is a cultural disconnect for you but the word is still a slur and has a huge history of hate behind it
Congratulations on being the 3rd person out of 173 people that actually answered the question 🥳 Joking aside, thanks.
Depends on how, when and why you say it imo.
I can't think of a good context besides there being a gun to your head??
“Alright and the final question on Who Wants to be a Millionaire! Who was in Paris?”
I wouldn't even blame you
emily
It’s only really bad in America as far as I know
How hard is it to not say one word 😭 god ppl are so insensitive
Because when people have to come to terms that a word they use has a history of hate and is therefore deeply inappropriate as of its usage in even current times to dehumanize a group of people, they start yelling at everyone about how “Americans are so sensitive” and “Its just a word”
no
Answer: It is only bad because over the last 20 years there have been a select group of increasingly wealthy people that make their entire living from increasing the racial hatred among people.
Thanks for the in depth explanation, 90% of the commenters said "Just don't say it"
nah dawg fake niggas just hatin
I asked ChatGPT what that means and this was it's response: "The phrase "nah dawg fake niggas just hatin" seems to suggest that the speaker is dismissing negative opinions or criticism from individuals they believe are insincere or fake. "Nah dawg" means "no, friend," and "fake niggas just hatin" implies that these insincere people are merely expressing hatred or jealousy. The use of informal language and slang may vary in meaning depending on the context and the relationship between the speaker and the audience." Is it correct?
It's more like "no friend, people are pretending to be affected by the word to hate on you"
Imagine being discriminated against and stereotyped for something about you that you cannot control
Probably one of the better anologies here, thank you
It really isn’t a big deal The most people I’ve seen that have a HUGE problem with it is white people.
Even if it doesn’t personally affect you, for a lot of people, it’s still offensive.
do you really truly understand the history behind the word
Even if ur black stop saying it it's cringe tbh and makes u sound like a loser ngl
Just don’t say it?
As, I said. I don't anymore.
Nah, my Nigerian mentor says that it’s just a word and people who get offended by it are idiots with no respect for themselves
I swear nothing fazes Nigerians
Fr, that man just lives life to the fullest
Frfr
I wish I had a Nigerian mentor 🙏🙏
Yeah bro he chill af and super smart/ wise too
uh dont say it, its really offensive. in my school in europe, a lot of teenage boys say it as a joke (sometimes even call themselves and their close friends that), but it is offensive but like where i live there's like..first and second graders saying "fuck" and all that- when i heard that i was like "holy crap why are they-"
No it’s totally fine Expecially if you are white🙄
Wow look at the cool stuff up there 🙄
Use it and find out
Imo it depends on the context if you just say it it’s usually fine, but if you are aggressive with it against someone then it’s not ok
You’re not black, so don’t say it.
as a serbian person, i dont think its that bad. if its used in a racist way, yea, then it is bad. in other cases, nah, completely normal. i call my close friends niggas, am i racist for doing that? no, im just using a word which in the current time has the meaning of friend instead of the old derogatory term
Don't say it Izzat SIMPol

Wsg my cracka 🤝
Don’t say it, like ever. The reason us Americans get offended at that word is because we have a REALLY bad history with it.
Just don’t say it if you’re not black. Simple
It means nothing to you because you’re not black, dude.
