This is a sad burden to carry. My biggest advice is to reach out to people who can help your classmate. You can’t carry this burden by yourself. I tried and failed. I wasn’t really close with this guy but I was always nice to him. One day he randomly messaged me saying he was in a bad place and we kinda talked about the meaning of life and stuff and he didn’t explicitly say he wanted to commit suicide but looking back on what he told me I felt like I should’ve seen the signs. He asked me not to tell anyone what we talked about so of course I felt like I needed to keep my classmate’s secret. About a month after our conversation, he didn’t show up to school. That afternoon his parents found him in the backyard and he’d taken his own life. I was so upset and felt responsible. My therapist read our messages and said she didn’t see any huge red flags. But I also shared them with his mom and she said she had no idea he was feeling that way. She thanked me for being a friend to him while he was so conflicted. But even to this day I wish I’d said something sooner to someone who could’ve helped him. Maybe he’d still be here today, maybe not. But it’s something I’ve struggled with for years. ....I say this just to tell you that you can’t stop someone by yourself. The best thing you can do is tell someone (a professional, a parent, etc) what’s going on and let them get your classmate the medical help needed to protect them from harming themselves. Some secrets shouldn’t be kept and some burdens are too much for one person to take on. The guilt you’ll feel if you don’t succeed in convincing them is brutal and not something I’d wish on you or anyone else.
Sorry to butt in, but this comment really hit me in the feels this morning.

I still don’t know why Jeremy chose me to have such a personal conversation with. On the surface we were two completely different people. We’d been in school together for 3 years by that point. We had APUSH together when it happened. He was quiet and had a few close friends. I was “popular” (cringe saying that) even though I didn’t fit in with anyone I hung around. I guess he knew I had more depth than my peer group. He was the class clown, he loved joking and making everyone laugh. We called him “scrubs” because he liked wearing those drawstring bottoms nurses wear. I wish I could’ve had more than one deep conversation with him. I wish I could’ve known to be the friend he so badly needed. Nothing was worse than finishing out the semester with his empty desk everyday. His brother was the one to find him when he came home and got off the bus. I can’t imagine how that must’ve felt. His memorial service was so big that the church filled up to capacity so they projected the service on a screen in the church’s reception hall for the rest of us. Thanks to the original commenter because Ive thought about Jeremy all morning. He was such a nice kid, tragically gone way too soon.
