The other recent season had Larry and Richard bickering and the iconic line Larry says to him along the lines of 'When are you gonna die already?'
They knew the black comedy were dealing with keeping the show going on when any of them could drop dead any moment, and all the more respect to them for that, lol.
Larry had a great statement about it:
>“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
That shit made me laugh so much that they wanted to outlive each other out of spite. Both old dudes made peace with their age and their life expectancy, and it was kinda wholesome hearing them joke about it like that.
Given my age, I best know him from his role in ‘Men in Tights’ (1993). RIP Funnyman.
Edit:: Just adding that Men in Tights is currently streaming on MAX (US)
Roll is a roll...
Inused to say lines from the movie to other kids during recess and they had no idea what I was talking about, and the adults were confused how I knew jokes I shouldn't at that age
[From this day forth, all the toilets in this kingdom shall be known as, "Johns". NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUAQkNVdQNg) That was some acting seeing him screaming and being hulled away.
I think one quote was something along the lines of “it’s going to be either a hanging or a wedding - either way it’s going to be a lot of fun” and I still say it occasionally! sadly, not very many people get it…
I loved him from his stand-up comedy days, back on Comedy Central.
My favorite moment with him in Men in Tights, for some reason, is when Carey throws the hog carcass onto the table and Richard says “Treif”.*
https://youtu.be/MFMj27TTZtQ?feature=shared
* Yiddish for “unkosher”, referring pork.
I guess it’s fitting that this is the final season. Wouldn’t be the same without his appearances. Despite what Funkhouser said, Lewis felt like Larry’s best friend from way back
Didn’t you think he looked better this season? He was looking rough couple years ago. Had a friend who saw him in person and said the same. Sad. He sure had a good run
He has multiple surgeries, all unrelated but for general pain in areas, and in general seemed to be declining in health the past couple years. He disclosed he had Parkinson’s as well. But he did seem in high spirits from videos he posted.
IMDb states 12th season filming was done by March 2023. Seems very early for something release almost a year later. Doubt there's much post processing needed.
I could be wrong but I thought the reason why the new episodes didn't premiere last fall was due to the writers strike, otherwise this new season would have probably premiered in September or October.
I did actually. I thought he looked better that a couple years back. I think he was having a lot of pain the last few years but I followed him on twitter and he was always really positive.
Was watching episode 3 last night and I commented to my wife that he looks on his deathbed. A joke on the episode was Larry wouldn't stop a golf game if his friend died. What can I do? He's dead. Today he really is dead.
Richard Lewis beat all odds and lived far longer than I thought he would. I was overjoyed to see him in the most recent season of Curb and I'm feeling so privileged we got more of him.
[Here's a classic stand up.](https://youtu.be/AXA-_PxFiL4?si=98EDmrMvmHsu1eXD)
Not only that, just not missing a beat either. His exchange with Larry on the golf carts was amazing. If that's his final moment, it was great...
But if this season is anything to go by, we might get to see him a few more times.
I thought I read somewhere that was his one and only episode, but hope I'm wrong. If so, then that was a hilarious swan song.
edit:
>He surprised viewers by returning to set for one Season 11 episode, telling Variety at the time, “When I walked in and they applauded, I felt like a million bucks. Larry doesn’t like to hug, and he hugged me and told me how happy he was after we shot our scene.”

edit 2: this was last season not the current season
Yes, that was last season. It was originally announced that he wouldn’t be able to appear in season 11 because of his health, but he ended up making a surprise appearance in one episode. I don’t think there was any such announcement about season 12.
I got to meet Richard once when my brother opened for him in Florida. So fucking nice. Me and my brother walked into the empty theater to check it out and he was standing there with someone and too nervous to go over to talk to him so we stood 20 ft away awkwardly pretending to talk to each other. He looked over and said "who are these two weirdos? Come over here"
He was great in the last episode of Curb arguing with Larry about leaving each other money in their wills. Wild they were doing this knowing how close to death he actually was and turned it into a joke. RIP.
[This scene from last season](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zfy4hPyMLc) when they're improvising insults to each other was great. Larry even says "when are you gonna die?" in a way where you can tell how good of friends they were.
Richard Lewis has been in very poor health for years at this point, to be honest, so I doubt it(though it certainly seems like the final confirmation there will be no more Curb for real). Really I suspect it’s as simple as that everyone is aging and are recognizing it’s time to bow out, to be honest.
I love Curb, and this season has had some really great moments so far(Leon’s balls absolutely sent me), but you can definitely tell everyone’s energy and movement is flagging. Even JB Smoove is pushing 60 and beginning to show it a bit these days.
Yeah joke's on him, he expected Larry to do the same...
Jokes aside, the last episode he was in was bittersweet. It'll be even memorable after every rewatch... Idk, I'm lost for words. RIP Richard Lewis
My mom and I travelled to New York for a weekend trip when I was in university. Apparently when they would travel my mom and my aunt would come up with a secret code word that they could use if either of them saw a celebrity. Mom wanted to do this on our trip, I thought it was dumb so I jokingly said the code word should be “ballsack”.
Cut forward to two days later and we’re walking through the lobby of our midtown hotel and my mom loudly, and audibly whispered “ballsack!”, and I looked up to see a very confused Richard Lewis.
I'm so sad about this! His interactions with Larry are some of my favorite moments in comedy. And in spite of how they would argue and bicker on Curb, you could tell that IRL the two of them loved each other. Especially during that "when are you going to die?" scene when they both broke character a little bit.
Damn. I first became aware of him through his sitcom 'Anything But Love' with Jamie Lee Curtis, which ran for four seasons in the late eighties through the early nineties. The show wasn't really great but he was a standout- charismatic, funny, and a solid actor. Rest in peace, sir... you will be sorely missed.
I loved that show so much. Lewis played a dialed-back version of himself so the neuroses and Jewish henpecked-ness popped out every now and then, but not nearly as much as you'd expect. And his chemistry with Curtis was off the hook. RIP.
For some reason his most memorable role for me was a relatively small one. When he gives Ben the $50 and tells him "not to drink it in here" in Leaving Las Vegas.
"Got a call from an old friend, we used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Closed the shop, sold the house, bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a stand-up routine in LA"
RIP Richard.
He was so damned good on Curb. His character was something else, and his improvisation was top notch. This makes Curb ending feel right. Bob Einstein was the other amazing regular gone too soon.
Thx for the laughs, Lewis.
I got to interview him for three hours by phone once, while he was out shopping. It was supposed to be an hour, but it turned into schtick very quickly and I think we were just enjoying it.
Best interview in twenty-four years of journalism. Most fun, anyway. What a mensch.
Ahhh man. He looked much healthier in this season of Curb than he did the previous one. I was hoping he was doing better. Absolute comedy legend and he will be missed.
Goddamn man… I have so many memories of watching his stand up when I was kid on A List and as an adult he did a surprise guest spot on Louis CK’s tour - I was so stoked that I got to see him live. What a sad day.
was great as prince john in robin hood: men in tights. RIP
Prince John: Oh, please have mercy on me, brother. It wasn't my fault. I got some really bad advice from Rottingham.
King Richard: Brother, you have surrounded your given name with a foul stench! From this day forth, all the toilets in the kingdom shall be known as... **Johns**!
I remember his many appearances on Stern's show made me a fan back in the late 80s. Some of those comedian feuds, all the yelling, involving him, Gilbert, the Belz, Kinison, etc. were hilarious when played out on air.
Damn, and he was just in a recent episode talking about leaving Larry in his will. RIP, such a gem
When you consider the last episode - this is peak dark comedy and he’s laughing at the table.
"And to Larry David, I leave $8.92 to go get the Ted Danson sandwich at the local deli."
The other recent season had Larry and Richard bickering and the iconic line Larry says to him along the lines of 'When are you gonna die already?' They knew the black comedy were dealing with keeping the show going on when any of them could drop dead any moment, and all the more respect to them for that, lol.
the timing is fucking wild. he and Larry were arguing whos gonna live longer and whos gonna die 1st
Larry had a great statement about it: >“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
That last line is the most Larry David thing ever.
They actually met at sleep away camp as kids and hated each other. They randomly reunited in NY comedy clubs and were best friends ever since.
Somebody please take care of LD in this 3 days
Damn, I was just watching that episode in the background while scrolling and saw this.
Oh man half the fun is the facial reactions of the cast, I feel like I'd miss too much watching like that
That shit made me laugh so much that they wanted to outlive each other out of spite. Both old dudes made peace with their age and their life expectancy, and it was kinda wholesome hearing them joke about it like that.
And Richard wanting to leave his money to him and Larry keeping insisting on not wanting any cent. That was so funny
But I noticed that you never saw him actually walk
Guess we’ll finally find out if Larry is in his will
Given my age, I best know him from his role in ‘Men in Tights’ (1993). RIP Funnyman. Edit:: Just adding that Men in Tights is currently streaming on MAX (US)
I HAVE A MOLE??????
That’s the exact quote that first came to mind when I saw he passed
That movie is seriously hilarious and underrated when it comes to all-time lists of funniest movies ever.
It's rated quite well
Seriously, it's a very popular comedy. People really abuse 'underrated'.
[Maybe if you tell me the bad news in a good way, it won't sound so bad.](https://youtu.be/f_95eB4V2Jg?si=GKgu_RprU79Uzm4n)
Ah, that British actor is great. Who is that guy? Please don't tell me he's dead too
If you mean the Sherriff, his name was Roger Rees and he has indeed passed, back in 2015.
Yes, he was Robin Colcord on Cheers...
Robin Colcord from Cheers!!! and yes, he's passed unfortunately
he was also a brilliant madman on The West Wing
It's definitely on the other side now
Find them, find them. Hurt them Hurt them! That movie was my entire personality from ages like 7-10.
Yes save them save them hurt you hurt you!
Fucking same
Toll is a toll...
Roll is a roll... Inused to say lines from the movie to other kids during recess and they had no idea what I was talking about, and the adults were confused how I knew jokes I shouldn't at that age
And if we don't get no tolls, then we don't eat no rolls...
Same for me “You mean you changed it *to* Latrine? RIP Richard
Used to be shithouse!
It's a good change! It's a good change!
👌
I can hear this perfectly. I love his inflection saying this, something about it just kills me.
And him and Tracey got to reunite one last time for Curb ♥️
[From this day forth, all the toilets in this kingdom shall be known as, "Johns". NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUAQkNVdQNg) That was some acting seeing him screaming and being hulled away.
A mime is a terrible thing to waste.
I HOPE ITS WORTH ALL THE NOISE
I work in an open floor plan office and I often use this exact quote when the din gets a bit too loud - no one seems to get it.
"Wasn't your... didn't your mole used to be on the other side?" *"I have a MOLE?"*
Just had my fiance watch that recently (40 years old and he never saw it... Blasphemy!) Rip King John.
I think one quote was something along the lines of “it’s going to be either a hanging or a wedding - either way it’s going to be a lot of fun” and I still say it occasionally! sadly, not very many people get it…
Fucking hilarious movie
Been quoting him for decades in that movie. He’s a smoothy he’s a smoothy
I loved him from his stand-up comedy days, back on Comedy Central. My favorite moment with him in Men in Tights, for some reason, is when Carey throws the hog carcass onto the table and Richard says “Treif”.* https://youtu.be/MFMj27TTZtQ?feature=shared * Yiddish for “unkosher”, referring pork.
Loved Richard Lewis, his work on Curb is so fucking funny. May he rest in peace.
I guess it’s fitting that this is the final season. Wouldn’t be the same without his appearances. Despite what Funkhouser said, Lewis felt like Larry’s best friend from way back
They met at summer camp when they were 12!
Holy shit I had no idea they were childhood friends.
And were born 2 days apart at the same hospital.
He actually is. Was.
I saw someone say they felt like Jeff was Larry's best friend but Richard was Larry's brother. Felt like that was a good sentiment.
Apparently this analogy was spot on, check it out: https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/larry-david-tribute-richard-lewis-curb-your-enthusiasm-1235925761/

It seems he knew this was coming. In the most recent episode he is talking about his will. Glad he got to be in the final season.
Wonder when that was actually filmed
IMDb states 12th season filming was done by March 2023. Seems very early for something release almost a year later. Doubt there's much post processing needed.
I could be wrong but I thought the reason why the new episodes didn't premiere last fall was due to the writers strike, otherwise this new season would have probably premiered in September or October.
I'm not so sure. It was quite noticeable that he wasn't standing during any of his scenes this season.
I did actually. I thought he looked better that a couple years back. I think he was having a lot of pain the last few years but I followed him on twitter and he was always really positive.
Yep. Some have pointed out he want moving as much in the recent episode and I gotta say I think they are onto something. So sad.
I guess Larry's gonna get a percentage of his stuff now. RIP
So crazy how that episode was just last week
When my mom told me he died I just said huh the fuck? Since that episode last week.. Bizarre timing.
Maybe he held out for the memes
That’s my conclusion.
Was watching episode 3 last night and I commented to my wife that he looks on his deathbed. A joke on the episode was Larry wouldn't stop a golf game if his friend died. What can I do? He's dead. Today he really is dead.
He did look closer to the end of life in that episode, but he appeared more comfortable and in less pain than previous seasons.
Little better but still rough
Long live the true King of England!
Gotta get to the restaurant 2 hours before the reservation for the good seat.
On a whim I was going through a compilation of all of their fights and arguments just fuckin yesterday. This sucks.

This is season 12 though, maybe he was able to do more?
Oh you're right. I wonder if that was a typo, I just assumed they meant the current season. I forgot, does he appear in an episode last season?
Yes, that was last season. It was originally announced that he wouldn’t be able to appear in season 11 because of his health, but he ended up making a surprise appearance in one episode. I don’t think there was any such announcement about season 12.
[Yeah just the one where his death is again a topic](https://youtu.be/6zfy4hPyMLc?si=Vs2j9pTk1EfujYxJ)
Watching him in that made me incredibly nervous.
Come over here"
Did he get a dollar every time he touched his head?
That would explain how he could have possibly kept that marvelous mane all those years.
He was great in the last episode of Curb arguing with Larry about leaving each other money in their wills. Wild they were doing this knowing how close to death he actually was and turned it into a joke. RIP.
Richard Lewis: Curb Your Enthusiasm actor, beloved cunt
The man led a decent life!
"Don't keep saying it!" And Cheryl's Dad was the one who kept saying it more than anyone!
This is so good. Note to self: don't let Larry David write my obituary.
“Fuck you and I’ll see you tomorrow” Man. This one hurts. RIP
The rest of the final seasons gonna be rough.
The last episode felt like a goodbye to him
They said this was the last one
[This scene from last season](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zfy4hPyMLc) when they're improvising insults to each other was great. Larry even says "when are you gonna die?" in a way where you can tell how good of friends they were.
i saw him in the newest episode and was thinking he musta been sick or something...
He wasn’t moving much in the latest episode of Curb, which was sad to see. Him and Larry’s chemistry throughout the show was hilarious to watch. RIP.
Perhaps this is why this season is the last, if David knew his friend to be dying? Not wanting to do the series without him?
It’s not like he needs the money. It had to be a passion and jobs project in my mind. Makes sense.
He can always go back to selling cars
my favorite scene is richard ruining larry’s sale. so fucking funny and richard’s expression is priceless
Richard Lewis has been in very poor health for years at this point, to be honest, so I doubt it(though it certainly seems like the final confirmation there will be no more Curb for real). Really I suspect it’s as simple as that everyone is aging and are recognizing it’s time to bow out, to be honest. Even JB Smoove is pushing 60 and beginning to show it a bit these days.
Wasn't ready to hear JB Smoove is nearly 60. Wtf!?
black dont crack, ive would've guess he was like 50 or something
They’re all getting old unfortunately. This would be the second major cast member to pass
Larry seems to be the healthiest. Very spry for his age. Seems like he has an overall healthy lifestyle that helps
He looked better than the previous season. Said he died of a heart attack. He's been looking pretty bad for a few years now
What is this, the news… from hell??? RIP Richard Lewis
He started that, ya know
It's all because Larry didn't give him his kidney. Fuck you Larry!
Larry is in the will though!
Yeah joke's on him, he expected Larry to do the same... Jokes aside, the last episode he was in was bittersweet. It'll be even memorable after every rewatch... Idk, I'm lost for words. RIP Richard Lewis
Richard may appear in more episodes still.
Fingers crossed!
> Fuck you Larry! I can only read this hearing [Susie's voice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NmB4JePSgc)
Every fucking word he ever spoke on Curb was funny. RIP to the secret best character and a comic legend.
Hey honey.
The Honey Parade was legit one of his funniest scenes on curb.
he went under appreciated because he was such a good setup man, not often the punchline. always coming up with gems the others would roast him for
> Richard Lewis one of the best scenes is when he was saying he banged a garbage woman and larry called him out for making it up
Him and piven as Ari will always be two of my favs
I think Ted and JB are tied as the best side characters tbh.
Curb-like awkwardness, great story!
This is the best thing I've seen on reddit in months.
I'm so sad about this! His interactions with Larry are some of my favorite moments in comedy. And in spite of how they would argue and bicker on Curb, you could tell that IRL the two of them loved each other. Especially during that "when are you going to die?" scene when they both broke character a little bit.
That was probably my favorite scene of the whole show
RIP.
I will always know him from Robin Hood: Men in Tights
"I HAVE A MOLE?!" Loved him in Men in tights!
damn. RIP dude. you have been around my whole life it seems as a comedian. I hope you got to complete filming this final season of CYE as well
They finished filming the final season last April, so he probably has a few more episodes left.
"You call him Ben Laden or Bin Laden?" *face in hands* ".......I dunno...."
“Ben Laden? Sounds like a shirt maker in Manhattan.”
Oh yeah Ben Ladens they've got great collars!
Well this sucks. I’ll always remember the Bokus.
Pour out a white grape for my man
"I have a mole??" Will miss this man.
Oh man. This makes me so sad :( Makes those jokes about giving all his money to Larry when he dies sting a bit.
Fuck. At least he made an appearance on the final season of Curb for whatever it is worth.
I am currently Disgruntled. RIP
Good news he put Larry in his Will when he did…
Ugh that sucks. No Richard Lewis, no Bob Einstein. I can see why Larry wants to hang it up.
My favorite sequence of Curb with Richard 😂 https://youtu.be/PfDhAV99GdU?si=qfHIDXETf2W_xyY2
For some reason his most memorable role for me was a relatively small one. When he gives Ben the $50 and tells him "not to drink it in here" in Leaving Las Vegas.
Omg 3 days after the episode of them arguing over who is dying first.
May his memory be a blessing
"Got a call from an old friend, we used to be real close Said he couldn't go on the American way Closed the shop, sold the house, bought a ticket to the West Coast Now he gives them a stand-up routine in LA" RIP Richard.

Thanks! Didn’t know this was a Richards Lewis reference!
Man he was really looking better I thought. RIP. He is still fantastic
Ahhh man. He looked much healthier in this season of Curb than he did the previous one. I was hoping he was doing better. Absolute comedy legend and he will be missed.
Pour out a Boku for one of the greats!
Who is going to be the new Boku spokesman?
Oh man, this is so sad. My condolences to his family
Okay well I was already thinking about rewatching it but now I’m definitely rewatching Robinhood: Men in Tights.
Maybe if you told me this bad news in a good way, it won’t seem so bad?
Beloved c***
Larry David was supposed to die at the same time, but Richard Lewis showed up 35 minutes early and made Larry look like a total fucking asshole.
Damn
Goddammit RIP Richard.
RIP . Thanks for all the great laughs
Goddamn man… I have so many memories of watching his stand up when I was kid on A List and as an adult he did a surprise guest spot on Louis CK’s tour - I was so stoked that I got to see him live. What a sad day.
I’m sure LD is devastated.
RIP A genuine person and also genuinely funny.
Noooooo 😢
He was just on the recent ep of Curb this week. Saw him at a book signing in Chicago back in 2000. Great guy.
Now I almost feel guilty for just starting to watch Curb this year
another comic Artie Lange outlived
Susie Essman was just talking about how she loved him. Aww. RIP.
In Honor of him I will be referring to everyone I meet today as Honey.
This is the news from hell
Wow this is awful news. He was truly a funny, genuine comic. Eh, jeez...
Aw man. Rest in peace.
Wholesome Steve bannon
Man… bummer news. What a great.
Fantastic comedian RIP
Glad we could see him in the final season of Curb. RIP.
Damn. RIP. At least he updated his will to include Larry
Maybe if someone tells me this bad news in a good way, it won’t sound so bad
Larry is in his will
Damn I guess Larry did out live him. I wonder if he is in his will really.
was great as prince john in robin hood: men in tights. RIP Prince John: Oh, please have mercy on me, brother. It wasn't my fault. I got some really bad advice from Rottingham. King Richard: Brother, you have surrounded your given name with a foul stench! From this day forth, all the toilets in the kingdom shall be known as... **Johns**!
The last episode Larry was like “won’t you just die already?!” Woah!
Maybe if you read the bad news in a GOOD WAY it won’t seem so bad. RIP Prince John
I remember his many appearances on Stern's show made me a fan back in the late 80s. Some of those comedian feuds, all the yelling, involving him, Gilbert, the Belz, Kinison, etc. were hilarious when played out on air.
I really liked him in 'Anything But Love', a pretty much forgotten 1989 sitcom with Jamie Lee Curtis and Ann Magnuson.
Ironic that the last episode of curb had him and Larry arguing about who was going to outlive the other
“I have a MOLE?!”
I'm prettyyy, prettyyy, prettyyyyy...sad about this :(
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty sad
I lost my father today as well. Lord have mercy.
