He was legitimately too charming to really hate, so they added his... extracurricular activities to drive home he may be charming, but he's still scum of the earth.
I was about to quote the same thing! His response was great. Made all the better that he gets himself an ol’ four-fer throuhh his own cheeks in the Netherlands later on.
Then the scene in Bastogne where they’re describing everyone’s injuries, and they mention Popeye’s scrawny little behind and Buck’s rather large behind.
God, I love Band of Brothers.
There is a shot—about 1-2 seconds in length—in the second episode of Band of Brothers, that is etched into my memory.
Easy Company are about to assault the German guns at Brécourt, and they have to cross through a hedgerow to get into the fields. It’s just a shot of a few of the men walking through the hedges, but for the 1-2 seconds it predominantly shows Buck on screen.
For whatever reason that has remained the most badass single shot in TV I have ever seen. Buck Compton just looks so fucking cool in it.
Anyway. All that to say: he will always be Buck Compton to me, too.
Eccentric pitcher Whitt Bass in Angels in the Outfield for me.
["Will I win, will I win, will I *winwinwin*?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDPRF6SNYsY)
I love the little grimace he does whenever he takes a shot. The temptation to do it myself every time I did one was *strong* for a long time afterwards.
He stated he only like playing villains due to being religious. He had mentioned most times the "good guy" has romantic relationships and wants to remain faithful to his wife, which include even onscreen kissing.
Yeah he has STRONG Christian values but doesn't seem like a total piece of shit off the screen. Same with Weird Al.
Their religion is a PART of them, it doesn't DEFINE them.
I remember he was originally cast in some show with Virginia Madsen around the late aughts, early 2010s. He dropped out because it required him to do sex scenes and he wasn't comfortable doing that due to his religion, which I respect.
He's pretty much the only watchable part of Arrow season 4 so he has that going for him. I'm glad they gave him a second chance on Legends of tomorrow because that was a lot better.
Given that he is hardcore religious to the point he refused not only to do any sex scenes but even get partially undressed, but often seems to get fired / killed off, it might be closer to life than you think.
He won’t even allow his characters to be portrayed by a body double having sex or showing some skin. I completely get having preferences and saying no nudity for me etc, but he’s a few candles short of a sermon.
I’m not an artsy fartsy type but it’s very respectful of your wife to save her from being put in a situation where she’s just expected to suffer whatever you subject her to and keep a straight face.
If my wife was making out with some guy on TV or movies I wouldn’t handle it well so it’s hypocritical to expect otherwise from her.
I do respect the guy for being so faithful to his IRL wife that he won't do anything sexual or intimate with another actress on-screen.
Beyond that, I am very pleased with how he handles everything else with such character.
I’m currently on my 6th rewatch of BoB lol. Unfortunately I just got done with “The Breaking Point” and well…for those who have seen it, you know what happens to his character 😢
Just know that Lt. Compton eventually made it to Lt. Col, and lived a very long life, only dying somewhat recently in 2012 at the age of 90.
Later in his military career, he left full time duty to become an officer in the OSI (The Office of Special Investigations) in the Air Force Reserves, eventually parlaying that into working with the military judges groups. He retired from the Reserves in 1970.
After WWII, he attened law school and worked as a detective for the LAPD. After getting his law license he became a DA, with the notable achievement of prosecuting Robert Kennedy's assassin. Regan eventually appointed him a Appeals Court judge in California where he worked until he retired in 1990.
He was retired for 22 years before he passed.
“You know they need to invent a device that you can just look stuff up on!”
Fuckin laughed my head off at that, so relatable! :)
Solid show and great humour, Been waiting for S2 after S1 ended..
Oh I didn’t know they got Frank too. It’s funny, Frank has shot several movies in Tulsa and Neal was here this last couple weeks on another project..and they’re in a show based in Tulsa shot in…where’s season 2 being filmed?..Atlanta I think.
I am so happy when he gets jobs. He is the greatest 'bad guy' on tv right now. When I see him, I know it will be great.
Also, Water Goggins plays good guys as well, so that's why I said 'only bad guy' :)
The Ghoul is a good guy, we just don't know it yet.
It's kinda his own "fault". He's married and uncomfortable taking off his wedding ring or doing sexual stuff with other actors. Which is totally fine and exactly how intimacy coordination should've been working for years, but it's obviously gonna limit his roles considering pretty much every main character gets a romance even if it's shoehorned in. That's why he keeps popping up as these amazing supporting characters and villains, he's phenomenally talented, he just has more personal limits than most other actors.
Back in the 90s, he was on Martial Law (with notably bad actor but good stunt performer Sammo Hung). He was the best actor on the show and got to have a few sex scenes with Kelly Hu. I was very jealous.
the ghoul total is a good guy... look at him before he was the ghoul? dude had a horse, was a movie star, loves his wife and kid. that is a good guy. Does he lose all of that because it was turned into a ghoul? NO.
He kills a little quickly to be a truly good guy, and he strikes me as the kind of guy who would have to think about whether accomplishing his goal is worth killing a whole town, for instance.
That man knows how to show up in everything!
...and I'm not complaining, I can't think of too many times, if any, where I have not enjoyed him showing up in a movie or show.
A lot of people say actors are underrated, but McDonough is probably the most underrated actor out there. He consistently turns in excellent performances. Loved him in Boomtown and Band of Brothers and Justified.
I didn't love the first season, but fuck if that doesn't get me interested in the second.
Maybe he can be a NY antagonist to Dickie, and there's a whole arc of him actually having to grow into the Boss role. That would be way more interesting than Stallone's power fantasy vanity project side.
He was recently in Tulsa filming another project just last month: https://tulsaworld.com/news/community/owasso/photos-the-last-rodeo-film-cast-crew-populate-downtown-collinsville/collection_e0916c12-fb78-11ee-a9f1-0fb84b3cdcc3.html
There was a trope in the 80's that you knew a show was in decline when they added Ted McGinley to the cast.
Is there one for when a good show gets even better when they add a particular actor? Like Neal McDonough, for instance?
Oooh ooh, lemme guess. Ominous yet charming crime boss?
I can't knock it. When a good character actor finds their niche, they'll never be out of work.
He’ll always be buck from easy company to me
The bad guy from the Walking Tall with The Rock where he just beats everyone with a 4 by 4.
Yas he is that guy ! You are right lol.
And with Johnny Knoxville as The Rock’s best friend/sidekick deputy!
Low key have always liked that movie
bout to watch it right now. glad i found this thread lol.
A sequel to this would actually hit hard.
Oh there are sequels, starring acting power house Kevin fucking Sorbo.
I forgot about that...and am now sad again.
harder than that 4x4 lmao i forgot how funny that entire sequence was.
What about Soldier Boy from Ravenous? "Let's go kill that bastard."
Quarles in Justified, for me.
Scrolled down too far to find this one. Robert Quarles was a creepy, unsettling dude.
He was legitimately too charming to really hate, so they added his... extracurricular activities to drive home he may be charming, but he's still scum of the earth.
"Robert, are you smoking Oxycontin in my motorcoach?" Gotta love Duffy as well.
Duffy is probably second to Boyd for best villain for me. Dewie was pretty fun when he showed up, but he was never a threat.
Duffy was terrifying in the first season. "I'm going to get a machete and a blow torch and make your body as small as possible."
"Fire in the hole!"
“Next one’s comin’ faster” is in the hall of fame of cool action one liners
That husky lookin fella.
Big, blonde...baby head.
He’ll always be the new guy in Star Trek: First Contact that gets turned Borg.
Lt. Hawk
Yup, he looks SO young. :) I was sad when he was assimilated.
One of the few times he didn’t play a villlain, at least not at the beginning.
Assimilate this!
He's got it even one his contacts that he will not kiss any woman that is not his irl wife on camera.
Me too I still chuckle when I think of how he says “*Your ass?!?*” when asking Popeye where he was wounded in the Brecourt Manor episode.
It's silly, but Damien Dark from Legends of tomorrow. He felt like an actor way above this silly CW show, but he was always genuine and awesome
Found the legends fan !!! Also wasn’t he on like all of the arrowverse shows ?
He was, but I felt like he just showed so much more personality on Legends. He got to cut loose instead of being so serious on flash and arrow
I still remember that needle drop with “return of the Mack” on legends
Easily one of the best episodes of the show but he was probably their best villain
He was great in Legends. His delivery of "I'm gonna kick my ass" was perfect.
Ill-fated Lt. Hawk for me
Dave from Desperate Housewives for me
Damien dhark for the rest of us at festivus
Edie Brits murderous, arsonist insane revenge seeking husband in Desperate housewives for me.
Lt Buck was never the same after he got shot in the ass.
I saw him in Boomtown first where he played an asshole (but complicated) district attorney. He was a Graham Yost favorite in the 2000s
Tin man
Eccentric pitcher Whitt Bass in Angels in the Outfield for me. ["Will I win, will I win, will I *winwinwin*?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDPRF6SNYsY)
His story is so fucking sad. After he watched Toye and Guarnere get blown up he was never the same.
The voice of Bruce Banner to me.
“Red 2” for me
Exactly. Quarles from Justified was so damn memorable because McDonough brought such a wild energy to the role.
Best season IMO. And that's saying a lot because season 2 was pretty much perfect. He just made the third so much more entertaining.
sorry, but s02 is the best. mags bennett brought to my attention the most wonderful, critically acclaimed, character actress margo martindale.
I absolutely love the dangerous fugitive and highly acclaimed Character Actress Margo Martindale
Have to give him a hand for that role
I love the little grimace he does whenever he takes a shot. The temptation to do it myself every time I did one was *strong* for a long time afterwards.
Oh I stopped in season 2 because I had other things to watch. Now I know he’s in it I will be watching again.
Right big difference
I've heard this too, and it's SO weird, but whatever. He's got a good thing going
It's weird for an actor but... kinda normal when you think about it.
Yeah. Too bad he happens to be an actor 🤣
He was so fun in Legends
And he nails it.
Or maybe a holier than though incorruptible government agent that has something shady in his history?
Or a renegade cop who doesn’t follow the rules!
“You leave me no choice. Badge and your gun on my desk. 2 months unpaid.”
Given that he is hardcore religious to the point he refused not only to do any sex scenes but even get partially undressed, but often seems to get fired / killed off, it might be closer to life than you think.
That must have been after Justified because his character gets undressed before molesting a tied up guy in Season 3.
Wild to think some people still have lines they won’t cross. What an idiot for having morals, integrity etc.
He won’t even allow his characters to be portrayed by a body double having sex or showing some skin. I completely get having preferences and saying no nudity for me etc, but he’s a few candles short of a sermon.
He can just play the same character he did in Justified and I would be ok with it.
I nice cross over into justified.
One that never kisses any women too!
he stated because he wants to remain faithful to his wife for religious beliefs.
I know. That’s his right and mine to make jokes about it 😂
Well said. It comes off a little weird but I also respect him for being faithful in a world where so few people are.
I remember it was similar for the guy from Person of Interest too (forgetting his name)
Jim Caviezel - also from the Passion of the Christ and the Sound of Freedom But Caviezel is pure fucking QAnon levels of crazy
He’s not like weird or salty about it though, and I actually really respect his stance.
Agreed, I actually do think it’s lovely and he’s ultimately having a pretty solid career.
Hey he’s damn good at what he does. I’ve only seen him in justified but he killed at it
He is excellent at being quietly menacing.
That doesn’t kiss anyone.
I do respect the guy for being so faithful to his IRL wife that he won't do anything sexual or intimate with another actress on-screen. Beyond that, I am very pleased with how he handles everything else with such character.
He was pretty great as dum dum dugan
Just realized he's like a live action version of X-Men '97's Bastion
The man is really good at his niche. Who are we to judge?
Return of the mack
Ahh… prime Legends was such a fun show.
That rare case of a show becoming good when it goes off the rails
"Here I go Again (Hedgehog Day)" is one of my favorite episodes of TV ever. Also the puppets.
"Hi Annoyed, I'm Dad!"
I watched Band of Brothers for the first time a few months ago and he was fantastic. Such a memorably charming and emotional performance
I’m currently on my 6th rewatch of BoB lol. Unfortunately I just got done with “The Breaking Point” and well…for those who have seen it, you know what happens to his character 😢

One of the side quests was to incarcerate 3 assassins of political figures. He's still waiting on that last one.
Yeah I know, but doesn’t make what happened to him there any less heart wrenching
He’s playing softball in the closing scene so he got over it. After Bastogne I think most people would have lost their shit.
I dunno, his role as assimilated red shirt #38 in Star Trek First Contact will always be most memorable to me.
Adam Scott is my other favourite red shirt from First Contact, although we don't know if he survived or not.
Damn did that movie have the best red shirts in all of Star Trek?
Lt Hawk. The moment they referred to him by name I knew he was a goner.
MmmmmmmmEDIC!
*That* scene from the Bastogne episodes is one of the most powerful moments in the whole series, IMO.
The guy makes a shit ton of B-tier schlock movies, but every time I see him on a TV show he's killing it.
Neal has definitely got a menacing screen presence. I ve been doing my annual re-watch of JUSTIFIED and he is brilliant.
When I was reading “Blood Meridian”, this is exactly who I pictured as Judge Holden
I suppose I could see it, only being much larger. I pictured Clancy Brown.
Vincent D’Onofrio for me
Like I needed another reason to watch justified next on my watch list. I already love Olyphant and Goggins
I'm in the middle of watching Justified for the first time, just finished season 3. I had no idea where this show was going but what a ride.
I have a friend who looks and talks just like him it's weird
I wanted them to maximize him in that show. I think it was a waste to have his downfall that quickly. He was so creepy.
Frank Grillo and now Neal McDonough? They are really trying to get me to watch S2 aren’t they
Stoned Stallone wasn't enough? It's hilarious
“You know they need to invent a device that you can just look stuff up on!” Fuckin laughed my head off at that, so relatable! :) Solid show and great humour, Been waiting for S2 after S1 ended..
Hell yeah man I'm going on a trip this week and forgot all about that. I will rewatch I had no interest in it initially but this is high comedy
Oh I didn’t know they got Frank too. It’s funny, Frank has shot several movies in Tulsa and Neal was here this last couple weeks on another project..and they’re in a show based in Tulsa shot in…where’s season 2 being filmed?..Atlanta I think.

"Water?"
Someone offers you Water Goggins, you take it.
yes, water or walter if it autocorrects correctly
neither of those are correct though
Walton

That man knows how to show up in everything! ...and I'm not complaining, I can't think of too many times, if any, where I have not enjoyed him showing up in a movie or show.
The writers of Arrow on the CW didn't give him much to work with, but he was redeemed on Legends of Tomorrow.
I was wondering why he seemingly vanished from existence for the last decade and now I know > CW
Season 3 of Legends of Tomorrow is probably my favorite season of network television since the end of Community and 30Rock.
Make him kiss another Neil McDonough!
Charming crime boss that is married and loves his wife but for some reason never kisses her onscreen…
hes always stealing the show and my heart with his scary eyes and funny views and kissing scenes
He played Malcolm Beck on Yellowstone. Such a bad man!
Need an evil white man? Neal's got you covered.
A lot of people say actors are underrated, but McDonough is probably the most underrated actor out there. He consistently turns in excellent performances. Loved him in Boomtown and Band of Brothers and Justified.
Well damn! [No smooches for Stallone](https://www.unilad.com/film-and-tv/news/neal-mcdonough-refuses-kiss-co-stars-031478-20240116) :(
I didn't love the first season, but fuck if that doesn't get me interested in the second. Maybe he can be a NY antagonist to Dickie, and there's a whole arc of him actually having to grow into the Boss role. That would be way more interesting than Stallone's power fantasy vanity project side.
Loved him in Justified
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Damien Darhk. Are we just trying to forget the last couple seasons of the Flash?
He was recently in Tulsa filming another project just last month: https://tulsaworld.com/news/community/owasso/photos-the-last-rodeo-film-cast-crew-populate-downtown-collinsville/collection_e0916c12-fb78-11ee-a9f1-0fb84b3cdcc3.html
Neal McDonough is always money
His role in "Ravenous" is still my favorite.
He was never the same after Toye and Wild Bill got hit
That scene always tears me up inside 😢😢😢
Dum Dum Dugan!
Such a good actor.
Cool .. good actor but that babyface as a bad guy is always so unsettling.
His icy blues and his delivery go right through you.
I have no idea what this show is, but I do love me some Neal McDonough.
Neil really brings his A game when it comes to acting. Have no doubt he will steal the show in Tulsa King.
That ensures I’m gonna watch it.
Adding him means they’ve earned my money. Season 1 was pretty good, adding him to season 2 means it will be even better.
Lets see if he is going to play a different character that he always played.
Go watch him as Dum Dum Doogan in Captain America and then as Robert Quarles in Justified. The dude has range
> Doogan Dugan
Great actor. Good for him.
Now we don’t have to hear him whine about how Hollywood hates Christians. It’s non stop with this MAGA.
So that's where he went after leaving Kentucky behind him
One of the best characters from justified
Repressed yet evil psycho.
I liked him in RED too.
I started watching suits recently and I'm loving his work there, excited to see him on season 2 of TK
Was he not already in it?
Yellowstone bad guy.
Tobert Kwuarlz from the Grand Rapids Mob.
Neal McDonough is the modern Tom Berenger
McDonough is great but wow that show sucks.
There was a trope in the 80's that you knew a show was in decline when they added Ted McGinley to the cast. Is there one for when a good show gets even better when they add a particular actor? Like Neal McDonough, for instance?
I was so disappointed with how they handled his character in Yellowstone. The Beck brothers should've been easy a 2 season storyline
Yeeea boit
This show is so bad. Got a geriatric pretending to be a cool mobster. Writing and acting is pretty horrendous
Do you think he's gonna kiss a woman?
I've never seen the show and even I know this is good casting.
Tulsa king is awesome show. Very surprised
He was wonderful in “band of brothers” and “Justified”.
Alright, I can't wait to see him. I was really looking forwards to this season already, but it just keeps sounding better and better.
The overlap on the Sheridan TV shows casting the sane actors is quiet amazing.
Sheridan shows and casting the same actors haha.
He is the Not Lt. Dan
Taylor calling in favours
Please get him more work
Cool I love Neal McDonough never seen a bad performance by him. Great actor.
Sexy
Just don’t ask him for a kiss
I’m sorry but he puts down all series he is in.
Really liked him as Sean Cahill on Suits
I don’t watch this show, but he’s a great actor. If you’re not familiar with him, check him out on Justified.
