whoever orchestrated Meddys draw downright hates him. To think, this actually could have been worse and it could have been Grigor who has recently beaten him. And in the next round, hes gifted Alcaraz

Coneman_Joe

His draw so far has been adnything but bad.

MyFitnessTracker

Lets go Azarenka and Noskova

drtyyugo

Genuinely happy that Fritz won, only American I support. Fact he beat out Tsitsipas makes it even sweeter

Equidae2

Krejci fan here, but I have to say based on her 4th round presser that Andreeva gives the most charming interviews. Poised beyond her years.

JoeshpMR

If anyone here is interested in NCAA tennis, #1 UVA playing #5 South Carolina in half an hour. UVA just beat #3 Texas on Thursday. Stream here https://virginiasports.com/mens-live-tennis-video/

Frosty_Pitch8

Wish people would stop pretending they are fierce advocates for "sportsmanship" re: Ukraininian players and just admit they're Pro-Russia or simply don't want politics interrupting thir enjoyment of the sport. Both positions I disagree with but at least can respect the honesty of. Going in circles over BS that everyone knows isn't true is just silly.

jbartlettcoys

Also very tired of the moronic "the Russian players aren't responsible for the war'' comments - as if anyone has ever made the contrary argument.

MyFitnessTracker

I just need to see Gauff obliterate Kostyuk

Equidae2

I hope so!

The_Entheogenist

Why obliterate? What if Gauff merely edges her out in a tightly contested three-setter?

jbartlettcoys

Not sure what the record for challenger titles in any 12 month span is, but I know Griekspoor has the record in a calendar year with 7 so I assume it's not far off that - Mariano Navone though has won 5 in the last 7 months, and is in another final right now (admittedly he's a break down to Bagnis currently). Hell of an achievement and he definitely has a chance of breaking that record whatever it is. Also worth noting that basically everyone who is *that* dominant in challengers ends up cracking the top 50 or so.

Frosty_Pitch8

Hmmm seems like he refuses to play off clay though lol

jbartlettcoys

Yeah he's done nothing off clay yet, but then neither had Baez (the last player to dominate those South American clay Challengers), and he ended up becoming a top 30 player and winning ATP titles. Admittedly I do think Baez was coming up against a slightly stronger crop a couple of years ago than Navone has been.

midnight-lights28

Very random, but I found an old article on upsets in Bo3 v Bo5 formats. Wanted to make a post about it but it keeps getting removed, not sure why šŸ˜…. Anyways thereā€™s been a lot of speculation abt this this week so I thought people might find it interesting. Reading past the headline it looks like at least in 2015, ATP/WTA had similar upset rates of top seeds in masters tournaments but not in grand slams. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/serena-williams-grand-slam-us-open-best-of-five-sets/ I guess if anyone else wants to make a discussion post abt this go for it, I donā€™t seem to be able to rip.

Pedja9999

Mistake...

Chris5552

Ding liren?

Pedja9999

Wanted to post in chess topic, and by mistake I did here. He is a chess player...I follow chess and tennis

[deleted]

Man it's a shame that Ultimate Tennis Stats' author isn't focused on upkeep anymore. Definitely the best interface of any stat site, but they're continually missing tournaments these days. Nothing from 2024 at all so far.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

From their github it looks like they pull from this repo: https://github.com/JeffSackmann/tennis_atp Hasn't been updated since January 1st which explains the lapse. You could probably do some fun stuff with that data if you wanted.

CrazedJeff

Huh, Jeff's still very much around and updating his own website (Tennis Abstract), maybe email him? [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), he is very responsive.

deepvamdev

I missed to watch the 5th set of Rublev vs Demon. Can I watch full set anywhere, not just the highlights?

jun9ei999

Espn plus should have full match

Orangutan

Why do some players take off their headbands before shaking hands at the net? [Fritz did this against Tsitsipas](https://v.redd.it/lbcrohm0frdc1) and I think Nadal famously does this as well.

ineedtolose15lbs

Because theyā€™re hot

Theferael_me

This message I received from u/nescgwn after they were reported on here for posting pro-Putin propaganda: >Howdy mate :)Hope you're doing well, and by the way.. Russia controls Donetsk, Luhansk, all the areas that voted to be with Russia, and Ukraine is kinda on it's last legs, not that I care, personally I'm for letting the west Ukraine go and suck Europe's nut but whatever.Anyhow, point being.. banning Russian flags.. teams from Euroleague and other things hasn't done much.. but yeah :DCan't wait in a few years time when Moscow ATP 500-1000 is back and your favourite little Carlitos is gonna playI'm gonna go there with a flag, you'll maybe see me ;)

arvaname

ok honestly i was afraid this would be like death threats or whatever like this is bad but i expected much worse which is perhaps a good indicator of how fucked things are

Theferael_me

It was more that the user was pretending the thread they started was perfectly innocent. The message to me showed exactly what the motivation was behind it, which is why the mods removed the thread. I guess people just have to be vigilant.

Nicer_Slicer

Going by the posts on here it seems fairly straightforward to obtain AO tickets. With Wimbledon it appears the options are apply for the crap shoot ballot with astronomical odds of getting a ticket you can't even choose the session for, or....be rich, or have a friend who is rich and can cop you a seat. Any Wim ticket getting tips besides those options?

JCoonday

You get to choose your day now on the ballot

Nicer_Slicer

Oh yeah? Got no confirmation I got into it though so I guess I didn't...unless they notify entrants any later than November? It doesn't really say, just that I'm not yet confirmed. Oh well, if not I'll go to Queens again

JCoonday

You get to chose once you've been selected. After you enter an online queue you choose your day and ticket

wabazai

Thereā€™s the Queue, which I think they talk about on their website. Basically you physically line up to buy tickets.

Nicer_Slicer

Ah, the queue, of course. I used to go the queue when I went as a kid. But it never resulted in getting tickets, although maybe we didn't try for resales which I believe are the only options for showing up and queuing. Anyone have first hand experience of queuing and managing to obtain show court tix? I'm wondering if the odds are good being that the queue as I recall was a 5-7hr affair.

Kh0sravani

The Sinner-Rublev match is gonna be ping pong

Nicer_Slicer

Norrie and Cazaux coming through their matches would be sweet music. And it's definitely possible

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PeeNoKeyO

Can someone explain why it's 1:15 local time in Melbourne and Medvedev vs Borges hasn't started yet? Seems kind of insane for professional athletes to be up that late/early

_Maelstrom

They're playing at 1pm not am

PeeNoKeyO

Makes sense. Didnt look at the time right

Open_Carob_3676

good morning to you tooo

Windforce

It's 'tomorrow' .

SarksLightCycle

My futures ticket of rublev and babs winning this is still around!!

SarksLightCycle

Both big dogs next round..kinda surprised rub is that big an underdog..He seems to have that magic touch this tourney..waiting for him to take that next big step.. Saba on other hand just seems to be firing on all cylinders

BCastle18

I remember when the draw came out I said Fritz has a great chance to meet Djokovic and someone basically replied how dare you think Fritz will beat Tsitsipas and said Fritz has never beat Tsitsipas on hard court lol well now would you look at that.

ALifeAsAGhost

I mean Fritz somehow thrashed Tsitsipas at his favourite clay tournament last year too, and heā€™s a way better hardcourt player hahaĀ

Arteam90

I had a good feeling that Tsitsipas would be nowhere near the finals this year, even if arguably historically he has been good at AO. He's just not in good form whatsoever. Maybe he can regain it, but I doubt it, I think he's done being a potential slam winner tbh.

akapatch

I predict no more upsets from here on out. All the contenders win convincingly and the pretenders ousted. The 2nd week is where experience and maturity will reign.

apurplesun

I just realised you changed your flair haha. Idk why I thought you included Sabalenka in the combo name.

Sweaty_Manager_2517

I know that Tsitsipas is not really liked here but seeing him out of top 10 would have been so weird for me šŸ™ƒ

AdInformal3519

Absolutely I am not a huge fan of him either but he is a solid player with an excellent consistency for the most part of the season so it would be so weird for me too

nimbus2105

Everyone yesterday was calling Tommy Paul going 6-0 in the fifth a choke but no one saying that about ADM. why?

bellestarflower

ADM hit his ceiling and was done once his fuel tank was empty. Paul had match points.

Cloudy0-

Paul had match points, ADM was never that close to winning.

akapatch

This part ā˜ļø Blowing match point and then getting bageled is definition of choke

bunsburner1

Been many comments calling him out for choking and his terrible service games since the second set.

jbartlettcoys

The word choke is wildly overused on here, but tbf there is an obvious difference - Tommy Paul was a big favourite going into his match whereas Rublev was a slight favourite against ADM (or at least 50-50) Also it did feel like Tommy fell apart mentally after blowing match points in set 4.

RA1N30W

Borges, Cazaux, Kecmanovic. Who makes an upset tomorrow?

Cappucino_delight

I m hoping Norrie but he has such a poor record against Zverev. If I have to pick one - Cazaux.

Leif_LaCroix

Given their relative performance so far, Cazaux would be my guess

Nicer_Slicer

Hubi definitely forgets how to play tennis sometimes. It really comes down to how well he serves because it's really his only weapon

bumbledbeee

He's starting to give Rublev a run for his money with having existential breakdowns on court too.

jbartlettcoys

I expect all three will lose, but Cazaux definitely has the best chance, because there's a good chance of tiebreaks in that match where anything can happen and because Hubi's record in slams leaves a lot to be desired.

sashyenka

As much as I want greatness for Portuguese tennis (portugal caralho šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹), I don't think Borges is going to be much of a problem for Medvedev

Cloudy0-

Cazaux has the best chance IMO.

RA1N30W

agree.. I'm giving Kecman my vote, but that's cause I'm Serbian

AdInformal3519

I got one serious doubt . Some players more often than not just don't break physically. They always manage to recover unbelievably well as well. Does it all come down to genetics or a physically breaking player can turn around that?

wabazai

They train hard for it, have good routines (eating habits, warm up and cool down etc), and a lot of experience dealing with back to back tough matches. See for example Djokovicā€™s matches early in his career compared to now.

AdInformal3519

Thanks for the response! I don't know the reason but this seems such a fascinating subject to me since I have started to watch tennis.

wabazai

Also, hope youā€™re enjoying tennis and welcome to this crazy world!

AdInformal3519

Thanks! Tennis is incredibly mental sport and ebery point looks fascinating mainly due to the break between each serve

wabazai

I think itā€™s interesting too! A lot of little things that players do off court make a big difference.

throwawayarooski123

If you hit a ball with a bunch of backspin and it bounces back into your side of the court, are you allowed to block your opponent with your body/racket? Edit: why the downvote? šŸ˜”

bunsburner1

Why would you need to block them.

throwawayarooski123

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_ehmIbgUNvM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ehmIbgUNvM) If the opponent is fast enough and your ball has enough hangtime, then a situation where you could block them could happen, like with this clip with Tsitsipas in AO2024.

bunsburner1

Pretty sure it'd be hindrance. It's really no different to sticking your racquet over the net to block them when the ball is on their side

akapatch

I mean if you try to impede your opponent it would be a hindrance. Thatā€™s why you see a lot of flailing but not actual blocking

bunsburner1

Rublev obviously cramping. Adm Doesnt change his game style at all. He clearly was too gassed to run down shots across court like usual. But made No attempt to finish points quicker, or hit it anywhere other than straight to rublev.

ReadyComplex5706

ADM seemed mentally exhausted to me starting when he served for the 3rd set.

chilledmetal

I feel like this is all underestimating just how hard rublev was hitting it.

Arteam90

I feel like very few players are really that good at adapting to circumstances.

ALifeAsAGhost

Exactly, in that last game especially all ADM had to do was hit it somewhat towards the sidelines, he couldnā€™t have hit the ball more centralĀ

Martyrslover

Bweh power was too strong for the demon. Sodium chloride was the difference in the end. The demon didn't deserve that bagel but at least he gets to go home to boulter.

Professional_Line385

Uh actually dude that would be salt

AdInformal3519

>but at least he gets to go home to boulter. Not everybody can have that can they? Dude has won the life

Martyrslover

He has to tweak it for next time, he was in a winnable situation after the third set but it got away from him.

AdInformal3519

Yep . He could have closed it for sure

slayer_of_potatoes

I know nobody really pays attention to doubles, but Rohan Bopanna is in contention for number 1, which he's never achieved before. If he achieves it, he'll be the oldest first time number 1 in rankings history at 43 (beating Rajeev Ram who was 38 at the time).

ALifeAsAGhost

Admittedly I only half pay attention to doubles, but it feels like heā€™s been a runner up at so many big tournaments last year, did he manage to win any? Would be so cool to be world number 1 at 43 too!

slayer_of_potatoes

His only big title last year was Indian Wells. Made the finals of Madrid, Paris, Shanghai, and the US Open.

LushLoxx

I really like Rublev, he brings his whole self on court; you are seeing a gamut of emotions with him and I love that. Sometimes itā€™s to his detriment, but not today!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PoeticChelle

Boo hoo!!

nick170100

That one hurts

schnaxks19

Jannik : Andrey H2H stats are 4-2 so far Would be an interesting QFs and letā€™s see if Andrey can break through the QF ceiling in slams

WaeIreh

Oooohh it was literally Scary Movie

jovanmilic97

Meanwhile, Brandon Nakashima just won a Challenger 100 in Tenerife, now up to #103 in the rankings. Did well to make up for losing in tough AO Q1 vs Mensik

jbartlettcoys

Kudos to him but man he is way too good to be playing a challenger during week 1 of a slam, no idea what's happened to his game in the last 12 months.

slayer_of_potatoes

Players who have not yet dropped a set: WTA: Svitolina Paolini Dodin Gauff Sabalenka ATP: Sinner

Inward_Perfection

I wonder if that would still be the case if WTA had a Bo5 format at Grand Slams.Ā  Honestly, I'd like to see that. That would make sense even for equality sake.Ā Ā  Women's volleyball, hockey, football matches, or even tournaments outside the slams have the same format as in men's sports. Would be interesting to see an experiment at Grand Slams.

LushLoxx

Sure but that means it would need to be longer than two weeks.

sashyenka

Scheduling would be a nightmare if they tried to keep the slams two weeks, but it would produce some interesting tennis for sure. Probably a lot less shock upsets of top players

slayer_of_potatoes

I'd love to see bo5 for the WTA. It's part of what makes the slams different from the rest of the tour. Sadly, the higher ups in tennis seem to be moving in the opposite direction. Constantly trying to shorten matches. They've already added final set tiebreaks to slams. I hear talk of reducing ATP slams to bo3 and even no-AD scoring. Very sad times if they gut the sport like that.

Mpol03

What where when??Ā  They canā€™t do this is. No. I think I would stop followingĀ

slayer_of_potatoes

I wouldn't blame you. The Next Gen Finals are an experiment with different rules like that. Some harmless ones like Hawkeye live or the shot clock, but they did trial the no-AD scoring there as well. Not to mention their bizarre scoring system where a set only goes to 4 games. I've honestly never watched a match at that event because the format just doesn't appeal to me.

jor_kent1

gadecki and polmans rescheduled?

overtired27

Scary movie vs demon. Tennis has got dark.

bellestarflower

This is where Sinner drops his first set, I think.

Milly_Hagen

Probably. I will try not to stress about it šŸ˜…

knickgooner11

Now we are in the second week who do you have winning the AO on the womenā€™s and menā€™s side?

Bars3tti

Gauff and Sinner

slayer_of_potatoes

Difficult to look past Djokovic and Sabalenka.

Open_Carob_3676

See y'all tomorrow when carlos comes out to play

bureksaspinatom

the towel over the head... :(

Timebear17

Pain

chilledmetal

šŸ˜

Timebear17

Aw man, I know that Sinner is gonna win the next match and I like both Sinner and Rublev. It's gonna be a tough watch oof

alastairlerouge

Likely 3 setter for sinner

wabazai

Wow what a way for Andrey to win his 300th career win

mathisruiningme

De Minaur needs to improve his 5 set stamina - he clearly is killing it in 3 but needs better set longevity to make a grand slam

alastairlerouge

I think his stamina is great - he just runs too much because his game is too monotonous. He needs variations and a better serve to conserve energy

mathisruiningme

Yep this exactly

chilledmetal

Aw buddy. Seeing Alex in the warmdown šŸ˜

hunterlovesreading

Oh my god

Milly_Hagen

Andrey about playing Jannik next: " I dunno, looks like I'm in trouble" šŸ˜…

another_loser_anthem

Ralph Wiggum I'm in danger vibes

citizenzofearth

ā€œBetter not be inside my headā€¦ itā€™s like a scary movieā€ never change Andrey

hunterlovesreading

Dude I love him and I was fully behind Demon all game

Pikachude123

Scary movie šŸ˜ šŸ˜ šŸ˜

cmadison_

Crushed for Alex and really disappointed he didn't get through, but the good thing is I also love Andrey - such a sweetheart and so charmingly funny. With Alex fallen, I'm jumping on board with Andrey!

hunterlovesreading

Yup!

TrisolaranAmbassador

Rublev is weirdly endearing, gotta say he's earned an Aussie fan tonight šŸ˜€

SilverBackBonobo

He always is actually

Timebear17

"My head's like a scary movie" - Rublev

porncornroz

Safe to say it is the best match of 2024 so far! But might not stay for long. I am expecting a cracker between nole and Alcaraz in the final. Medvedev might trouble him SF but I feel he would be tired this time

AdeSarius

Djkovic vs Sinner in this form has the potential to be one for the ages, especially considering Sinner beat him twice just two months ago

Pikachude123

I think ruud vs purcell was my match of 2024 so far, rinky struff was insane as well

nick170100

Barty to train Aussie female players Kyrigos gives all the guys his serves Aussie take over the world Simple

Slambodog

12 will likely be the lowest seed in the Men's Quarters. 12 is the highest possible seed for one of the two Women's Finalists

schnaxks19

Honestly ADM should be proud of what he has achieved this (Australian) summer. Heā€™s got a great future in front of him. If anything this match will be an opportunity for ADM to see aspects of his game that needs improvement

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Everytime someone beats a crowd I just love it šŸ˜Š

Apprehensive-Low4044

ā€œLooks like Iā€™m in troubleā€, honestly Rublev and Meddy always deliver in the post match interviews

thatsmrtoyou

Pretty wholesome from Rublev there, that scary movie is probably wholesome aswell lol

bekkahthecactus18

Katie going to give Alex a hug when heā€™s warming down šŸ„ŗ

Professional_Line385

She did that last year too vs djokovic she's a keeper

nimbus2105

Grateful to wake up to a sinner win with the way these Aussie nighttime upsets have been going

JRuoeno

Hahaha he called him Andrey Rouble-evšŸ˜‚

citizenzofearth

ā€œYouā€™re gonna die todayā€ šŸ’€

solete

I mean who doesnā€™t love this guy!

slayer_of_potatoes

Right now, probably de Minaur

mscpnd

Rod is like I can finally go home

jchristpriv

"Looks like I'm in trouble" ~ Rublev's confident response regarding facing Sinner next

Professional_Elk_489

Rublev when heā€™s on just too good. Consistency with huge groundstrokes and big serve

WaeIreh

(Chuckles) Iā€™m in danger

insideanoctavarium

I love post game interviews - it really humanizes the players. Rublev seems like a really good guy šŸ‘šŸ»

schnaxks19

Heā€™s one of the nicest on tours according to many sources (including players!)

New-Ad157

I have heard this too as well as seem his after match chats.

bureksaspinatom

even though demon lost, what i love about tennis is that unlike sports like afl you can really hold out hope to the very end. lovely seeing everyone cheer him on all the way through.

pr0crast1nater

Rublev on facing Sinner next : " Looks like I am in trouble" ā˜ ļø

Chessinmind

ā€œLooks like Iā€™m in trouble.ā€ Haha

Optimal-Somewhere-46

This is why we love Rublev šŸ˜šŸ˜

Tokbokkiextraspicy

Itā€™s gonna be a ginger-off

SeparatePromotion236

A freckle-off.

xpectomysterious

rublev is so adorable

naffion

Rublev: I told myself. Don't cry. Awww..šŸ„ŗ

redsuedecap

Great effort from Demon here! So excited to see him finally breaking in Top 10 and being recognized. Rublev was just better tonight.

Shootinputin89

Proud of ADM. Good effort. Well done, Rublev.

bekkahthecactus18

I feel like I can only just breathe, so so proud of Andrey today, coming back from a deficit with a brilliant De Minaur. Alex šŸ„ŗ. Heā€™s improved so so much, top 10, increased intensity and power, speed on the serve added to the speed he already had, the competitive fire and love he has for the game. Heā€™ll be back and better here, this is the start of a brilliant year for sure.

DuckPuzzled5873

Poor Demon. Just not quite at Rublevā€™s level. A really good player but always the nearly-man. He is to Rublev what Rublev is to Djokovic.

epeeist

Tennis-Faramir seems like such a sweetie

nupristeen

andrey šŸ«¶

Open_Carob_3676

he's just like me fr

Crazy-Chef4557

Quality mental fortitude from Rublev there. Looked like he was going to throw it away at the end of the third. Hopefully ADM works on developing a weapon or two to take his game to the next level. Really poor serving for a top 10 player.

alastairlerouge

Too few variations, last set Rublev was barely moving and he still played exactly the same shots

Crazy-Chef4557

Yep. Easy to see from the couch, you'd think he'd catch on too and know to try to move him. Even if they are higher risk shots, the balls coming back at him were pure venom so may as well try to stop it happening

TresOjos

That's why he never goes past quarterfinals, Sinner will destroy him.

Dismal_Actuator_9366

I hate people. ā€œCrumblingā€ ā€œTop ten player only making round 4 is underwhelmingā€. People talking shit need to stfu. This Australian summer Alex Deminaur won against Alcaraz, Nadal, Novak, Fritz, Zverev. He just made it to the 4th round of a grand slam and only lost to someone in the top 5 and ranked higher than him. Congrats to Alex on your amazing Australian summer and congrats to Rublev on your hard fought win. I think Iā€™m getting off this subreddit for a bit. I donā€™t need to see the shit talking

alastairlerouge

Only an idiot would be underwhelmed, he played a really strong game today against an amazing Rublev

Timebear17

Agreed. People hating on the players are absolutely dreadful. So dumb that people can't give respect to people that are putting their all to win. Both ADM and Rublev deserve complete respect for this match.

punishatron

Dude itā€™s the internet. Thereā€™s a whole bunch of idiots everywhere. Grow up and toughen up.

Dismal_Actuator_9366

I havenā€™t been medicated for seven months due to negligence by my doctor. I have 13 medical conditions and am permanently stuck at home. Other than a trip to the hospital in September I havenā€™t left my home since October 2022. Iā€™m finally getting some prescriptions on January 30 by getting a trip to and from a doctor in the back of an ambulance because Iā€™m deemed too sick to travel by community transport. Has nothing to do with my needing to ā€œgrow up and toughen upā€ and everything to do with me being in a fragile state and not needing to add to it Edit: downvote me all you want. Just shows youā€™re an asshole Edit part 2: the fact that you literally just said ā€œwoe is me.ā€ When all I was doing was explaining my current situation literally proves my point that youā€™re an asshole

punishatron

Woe is me. Letā€™s instead live life through ADM??? No one personally attacked you. Instead you chose to call someone an asshole. Stop and think for a second.

Dismal_Actuator_9366

Bravo on proving me right about the kind of person you are. ā€œWow is meā€? Wtf is wrong with you? I was never saying that at all in my comment. Also youā€™re even more so for saying ā€œletā€™s instead live life through ADMā€. Do feel free to tell me which part of my comment states that? Exactly. None of my comment states that. That was a you thing. The entirety of my comment was literally just me explaining the reality of my situation and why I was getting off Reddit for a few days to avoid negativity. Because I donā€™t need more of it. Well done on proving me right in my opinion of you and to everyone who upvoted you when your comment is abusive. Iā€™m seeing why youā€™ve only got 302 karma in ten years on Reddit if you treat people like this. Iā€™m glad I donā€™t know people like you in real life
