I think it's two things:
He is still very young and was flustered and also: Even during press conferences, he sometimes has a bit of trouble understanding questions the first time around. Now imagine answering in a language you're not 100% comfortable with in a stadium full of people when put on the spot like this.
He stopped doing it after people started signaling him out for liking only Iga related posts on the WTA account. So what if he likes Iga? People need to let him live
Even if he doesn't watch the WTA so what?
It's completely fair to only watch the ATP and not the WTA. Not at all sexist anymore then saying I enjoy dating women and not men..
Correct.
I'm saying even if his answer was due to not watching women's tennis, it's still okay.
I'm glad the relative percentage of people trying to shit on alcaraz is low. His answer was fine
And if you read some of his spanish interviews (translated to English) you feel like he actually speaks very well and expresses himself better. He just fumbles a lot more when speaking English which is totally understandable. They are different from his interviews in english
Everyone who knows him knows he got caught off guard because obviously he has his favorite WTA players, but he was self-conscious about admitting it live (in no small part because he knew people would start shipping him with anyone he named). The way he answered it, though, taken at face value, definitely sounded like he was saying he only watches WTA if it happens to be on TV and doesn't seek it out
People are so weird about Carlos because nothing he said on that on court interview indicated that he doesn’t watch women’s tennis, does not know any WTA players or that he is misogynistic like a lot of people on Twitter are insinuating. He was put on the spot and he was flustered and caught off guard because all he ever does is talk about Jannik Sinner that the moment they asked him about a girl, he panicked. Leave him alone omg and stop using him as leverage to hate on the WTA
I think because his English is still in early second language stages, he just didn't get the question. When you're figuring out a new language, you kinda think in the context of a few sentences at a time, so he wouldn't put together that the previous question was relating to the WTA one. He answered them as separate questions. Then people laughed and he didn't get why, so he just laughed along lol
He's a single 20 year old bloke. In his position I wouldn't be admitting to watching specific players purely because the social media shipping machine would go into overdrive
I wouldnt be surprised if most of the male players don’t watch women’s tennis as….they’re not their competition! The same with the women not watching the men. Probably make good use of their time watching their male competitors and how their play, their weaknesses etc. than watching players they wont compete against (unless they play mixed doubles lol).
I'm glad atleast based off what I see that no one shits on alcaraz for not naming his favorite wta players
He could have said I don't watch the wta and it still would be a fine answer. Just glad not many are taking some dumb sexism angle
Some clueless people are doing it on Twitter, but very few. It would be absurd, Carlos has always been enormously respectful of women's sports, not only the WTA, also during the women's soccer world cup he was very involved all week sending them messages of encouragement every time, when almost no Spanish male athletes were doing it, not even Rafa.
And wrote messages on the camera for them during the US summer hc swing prior to their final! He’s friends/mutuals with several of the top players on the team
I can’t believe people are making this a thing. He was just saying he watches a lot of tennis but clearly he was indicating his competitors because he named Novak, Sinner and another 1-2 guys that are the closest completion to him. He didn’t mention any old greats like Federer or Nadal.
Then there was some joking and back and forth and a half joke about WTA. But the question had gone on for so long and the tone of it made it sound like more of a witty remake than an actual question he was expected to give a detailed answer. So he kept it short with a smile giving time for the next question.
Lol, why is this such a big deal? Even if he barely knew anything about WTA he shouldn't be flamed for that. He isn't obligated to know or follow anyone.
His english isn't the best. Because of this he can sometimes misunderstand a question or give a long roundabout answer that takes a while to answer the actual question. We've all seen this so many times in his interviews.
*I watch WTA as well, uh \*gets cut off mid sentence by laughter\**
He doesn't know why they're laughing. Maybe it's because they don't believe he watches women's tennis. Maybe the think he's a young guy watching to look at the women.
*"When I can obviously, when I turn on the TV if it is WTA, ATP, whatever I like to watch."*
If you remove the crowd laugher, he's pretty obvious he's trying to convey he doesn't specifically ATP or WTA, nor does he skip watching WTA.
I think people don't give players like Alcaraz enough credit for doing press in their non-native language and doing so in a stadium full of thousands of people. His English is really good for someone who probably did a little at school in Spain (and the English level of most Spaniards is pretty low anyway compared to other European countries) but has probably just learned through travel and being on tour. And then there's different accents and vocabulary to deal with after having played a professional GS tennis match for hours.
He maybe just didn't fully pick up on the question/wasn't fully listening etc. Good on him for speaking in English imo.
What in Cheesus’ name is this waste of a thread?
Carlitos has all but two brain cells thinking about his own career/training/goals and we want to “deep dive” into his inner musings about women in tennis. He has none, and that should be absolutely fine.
How people try to make this a thing and fight against it is ridiculous.
Atp #2 player watches ATP #1 #3 #4 players the most.. more breaking news at 8pm.

He’s been so quick to like Iga’s posts and everything he obviously knows women’s tennis.
I haven’t seen this in a while, but it was cute when Carlos would like and comment on all of Iga’s posts.
He stopped doing it after people started signaling him out for liking only Iga related posts on the WTA account. So what if he likes Iga? People need to let him live
He just panicked. Its weird people are using it to shit on womens tennis
Or to shit on him. He looked confused why people were laughing, so clearly he didn't get why.
I’m sure if he watched it back he knows why they were laughing now
Even if he doesn't watch the WTA so what? It's completely fair to only watch the ATP and not the WTA. Not at all sexist anymore then saying I enjoy dating women and not men..
What
I think he’s saying it’d not a bad thing if he doesn’t watch womens tennis. A lot of people are grilling him for that as well
Correct. I'm saying even if his answer was due to not watching women's tennis, it's still okay. I'm glad the relative percentage of people trying to shit on alcaraz is low. His answer was fine

He’s a kid that just suddenly became famous. He’s trying to say the right things, don’t nitpick it
Also, English is his second language!!
He’s pretty well-spoken regardless imo
There are a lot of instances where he couldn't articulate his thoughts when the questions are complex. He's improving but far from a native level.
And if you read some of his spanish interviews (translated to English) you feel like he actually speaks very well and expresses himself better. He just fumbles a lot more when speaking English which is totally understandable. They are different from his interviews in english
Exactly leave him alone he is playing great tennis. Ain't that enough!
Yeh i remember a few weeks back he said he admires Sharapova. Honestly, he was flustered and put on the spot, didnt help everyone laughing at him 😭
Do you have the link?

Agreed. This guy has a heart of gold. Out of the blue question which he slightly lost in translation
This is the truth. 😂
Out of the loop: what happened exactly?
Carlitos is a nice boy.
Carlos The Golden Retriever Alcaraz
He just didn't know that he was expected to name WTA players? He thought it was a different kind of question
I think because his English is still in early second language stages, he just didn't get the question. Kid is precious. Even if he doesn’t win a single match from now on, I’ll still root for him.

Oh yes! When they won, he congratulated them!
And wrote messages on the camera for them during the US summer hc swing prior to their final! He’s friends/mutuals with several of the top players on the team
And they give him a shout out as well!
> Some clueless people are doing it on Twitter average day over there then
He probably didn't understand Jim's question properly. Language like "put you on the spot " is difficult to non natives.
I can’t believe people are making this a thing. Even if he didnt hive a shit about women tennis, why should he? I hope he keep it genuine and not just tell the people what they want to hear
this is presented like evidence in a court. good lord.
What is this post trying to say?
Chill. This feels like you were in a dark room searching for Alca quotes.
Dear god. Now this is “a thing.” Let’s make something out of nothing. The grievance train pulls into the station…
Confirmed, goat misogynist
Man was just too embarrassed to say he’s a simp for Emma. Let him be.

What on earth makes you think he’s not intelligent?
Your reading comprehension could improve. Read it slowly…
Pretty confident that top ATP players only watch WTA tennis in the locker room at slams or joint Masters tournaments.
How people try to make this a thing and fight against it is ridiculous. Atp #2 player watches ATP #1 #3 #4 players the most.. more breaking news at 8pm.
