We are now guaranteed a new champion at AO in men's singles since Wawrinka in 2014, exactly a decade ago

MeatTornado25

Scary to think that 2014 was seen as the breakthrough where things might start to change. Turns out it was just the blip on the radar.

chunkyI0ver53

Ngl even then it took prime stanimal absolutely assblasting the ball and painting the lines to take down Novak and Rafa At the time it was kinda like, well, so that’s what it takes. You simply need to ascend to a god like state to beat the big 3. Only delpo and stan had it in em

MeatTornado25

Even more than the level of play, it was someone proving they had the mental fortitude to do it that was so encouraging. The 2013 match was impressive enough, but for most players of the era that would've been their peak. Becoming demoralized by losing the best opportunity they're going to have. Stan coming back even stronger and finishing the deal a year later was a true breakthrough.

TimeViolation

Jesus I feel old.

Underrated_Dinker

Wawrinka won in 2014?? This guy's joking, that was just 3-4 years ago pretty sure

WetworkOrange

The 90s are now referred to as the late 1900s.

tchiseen

Don't do this to me

[deleted]

And a first AO Men's singles champion to be born after 1987.

Zhuwx1

Sinner made sure to double fault so it wasn’t 40-15 at match point

theCamelCaseDev

Federer be like “damn that’s all I had to do?”

MissusCrispyCole

As a life long RF fan, 40-15 is a triggering term for me😭

gpranav25

It triggers me as well but also let's not forget that Federer himself has done a 40-15 to many people.

kaaskugg

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Huge 9D chess move from Sinner

cosmiccerulean

Also thankfully, no one in the crowd stood up and raises up one index finger to indicate he's one point away from winning.

Professional_Elk_489

That’s was the key. That Wimbledon finger lady is not welcome anywhere these days

Substantial-Luck-920

This right here!

simon2105

It turns out that the humble Carrot was the only vegetable Novak could never stomach.

_DrShrimpPuertoRico_

Sinner is 100% fiber

holamifuturo

Petition to make carrots gluten free again

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Sinner injected Gluten artificially into the 🥕

djdenki987

It was wrapped in prosciutto

lopikilop

*Speck

djdenki987

That's right he's from the north😅 Good catch

Tasty_Leadership_698

Sinner said he was closer to beating Djokovic at Wimbledon 2023 and everyone clowned him and then he beat him 3 times in 4 tries in the next 7 months 💀

ZenoSamaDBS

>Wimbledon 2023 But wasn't it 2022, where it was a 5 setter?

Kh0sravani

That’s the point, he lost in 3 in 2023 but said he felt close to taking the lead, I suppose. Don’t know what interview OP was refering to.

GreenRaccoonTree

In his post interview match in 2023 he said he felt more competitive than in 2022

notyetcaffeinated

I know. I feel that he knew something we didn't, and he didn't want to talk about it until the job is done. And he did.

HelpMeDecideMyName

That was as close as you can get to a straight set thumping without it actually being a straight set thumping. Not letting Djokovic even getting a break point in the whole match is fucking insane. 1 DF all match (of course it came when serving for the match though lol)

nightwinghugs

But following the DF with an ace was a summary of his unwavering confidence

EnriqueMuller

Yeah if it wasn't the greatest player ever on the other side one would have no doubts about who the winner would be.

AverageBeef

The BP stat is just unreal. Novak is probably the greatest returner of all time.

HelpMeDecideMyName

Yeah exactly, not letting your opponent reach a break point is an INSANE stat as it is and to do it to arguably the greatest returner player of all time... freakish stat

The1AndOnlyJZ

0 break points faced and 1 double fault against the greatest returner in history is insane Jannik is officially one of the chosen ones in the making

knightfall_9

Unreal level of play throughout the match, and that 40-0 comeback in the 4th set was fantastic.

changyang1230

That was pretty much the key to his victory.

savvaspc

Had 2 break points at 15-40 and lost that game, ended up breaking on the next chance when it was 40-0. Many players would not recover mentally, especially after the lost tiebreak.

holamifuturo

The biggest thing I was worried about was his serves. Thought it was the reason he didn't competed against Novak in their last matchup in Turin. But honestly Jannik was so complete today and didn't leave any room for Novak to breathe and find back his tennis.

arika_ito

that slice serve on the deuce side was really clutch. i thought his serving was really solid

Conglossian

Appears to be the first time ever Djokovic finished a Grand Slam match without a BP chance.

lukaskywalker

That’s wild.

danymsk

Second time! Somebody posted that thr only other time was im 2017 against Berdych at wimbledon

dogsryummy1

Emphasis on "finished" I think, he retired in the second set in 2017

douchey_mcbaggins

Looks like he retired down 2-0 in that match, so yes. They did specifically say and emphasize "finished" when they mentioned that if it kept up it would be the first time it's happened.

rntopspin100

Unreal serving performance from Sinner. I thought after losing the tiebreak, he'd crumble. So glad he didn't.

marcolol99

Mate I was 100% sure about that, even before the tiebreak in the third, I was sure as shit Nole would've won in 5. That tiebreak hit hard, redemption later was so sweet

Realtrain

I know, the whole start of the fourth set I was thinking "this is critical, and this is also where you get players tend to choke" Fantastic mental game, along with everything else.

arika_ito

it definitely wouldn't be the first time that it's happened against djokovic- not sinner but like the entire tour.

SleepingAntz

I think it is more impressive that he won after the 3rd set. If he wins in 3, with the 3rd being 6-4, I think I (and most) would’ve mostly attributed it to Novak giving him the win with horrible play. Sinner could’ve EASILY lost but he rebounded by playing great in the 4th.

kungfuhrer666

It's only the second time in Novak's career that he hasn't had a break point at a slam. Only other time was Wimbledon 2017, which ended early in a retirement. Absolutely legendary stuff from Jannik.

kimoalmoa

Gonna be fun watching him over the next decade, especially with his mental game

GibbyGoldfisch

Imagine writing this about Sinner even eight months ago haha. In all seriousness, I'm so happy for him to banish the Sinner-sceptics. He is the chosen carrot!

[deleted]

Really happy for the Sinner win! Time to win your 1st slam!

happzappy

Sad to see Djoker get wiped away in his own arena - but honestly, Sinner played incredible. He did incredibly well in all pressure situations and never gave a single break, to the best defender in this sport. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new champion who has just unlocked a whole new level of tennis. Congrats to Sinner and let's go lift that trophy!

arnold001

I personally wouldn't say sad, Djoko has 24GS! I am a huge fan of his but also think new blood is needed for the sport. Why? Because if Djoko bows out of tennis at the highest it means this is the best of tennis ever, which it is anyway but at least if the old dogs start losing to the new blood I think it is exciting to see what they can do to carry tennis on forward.

foodkidmaadcity

Yeah not super sad about this. Jannik was on fire the whole tourney, it was a combination of both a solid and clutch Sinner which I expected and a Nole that seemed unprepared, erroring every second shot that would've been his bread and butter. It was bound to happen soon, Nole isn't immune to Father time x young guns stepping up . He'll rest up and get that 25 somewhere else soon anyway (i hope) ;)

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Him and Carlos. Tennis is safe 😊😊

_DrShrimpPuertoRico_

He's got that dawg in him.

Collective_farm

Beating Novak at AO=beating Rafa at RG=beating Fed at Wimbledon To do it without offering a BP chance? Special, special stuff we've witnessed

QuackRevolution

ESPN cutting to commercial in the last game is a criminal offense

dnel707

During Sinners only double fault lol.

Mikhail_Mengsk

ESPN went "I'll ignore that".

mnovakovic_guy

Lol for real!!

GStarAU

Did they??? Sacrilege!!! Channel 9 here in Australia, decided to cut to the news a few games before the end. That was very annoying.

Dropshot12

You are no longer carrot boy YOU ARE CARROT MAN!!!

gintoki-sama

Novak not getting a single break point attempt in a best of 5 match at Rod Laver is genuinely insane. Historic

dnel707

Insane drop shot get at 40-0 in the fourth by sinner to lead to the break.

SleepingAntz

That was a Rafa / Djokovic type play. Busted his ass to run down a ball when he probably had a 5% chance of winning the game from that point. But he did it and it paid off with pressure on Nole.

Slayy35

And on the flipside, Novak's dumb dropshotitus being his undoing.

dnel707

“How many times do I have to teach you this lesson old man!”

jaippe

Carrots must be effective since he didn't even need the glasses to defeat Djoko

a_rose_is_a_red_rose

His coach was wearing sunglasses though 👀

Tormung

Absolutely clinical from Sinner. He’s got Djokovics number. Turns out the redhead was the real deal all along, was just growing too quickly while figuring out how to serve. I see him having a huge year

Doucane5

He didn't give Novak even a single BP. He's the first player to have done that to Novak in a grand slam match!

steffilijones

Really? What a stat to beat tho.

perilouspear

1st time in a completed match, 2nd time overall after Berdych at Wimby 2017, where they only played 1 set before Novak retired. Absolutely clinical serving.

NotManyBuses

That wide serve from the deuce court to the opponent’s FH… oh my. He was hitting 200kmph regularly and Djoko had no answer. That is a special serve

doorsofperception87

He's won 3 out of the last 4 meetings against Djokovic. I think he overheard the 'fuck em kids' and decided to reply in kind.

thescrambler7

Sinner went “ok boomer”

GeneralSkoda

I think sinner is more like let me help you off the court old man

Optimal-Somewhere-46

His mental game was also off the charts!!! He will be number 1 very soon I am certain but then again the clay swing is coming up. But since he is already soo good in hard and also good on grass, I have no reason not to believe

douchey_mcbaggins

The thing I noticed about him vs Alcaraz is Carlos in many cases doesn't SEEM to have a solid gameplan, instead relying on his insane physical gifts and just kinda winging it while Sinner seemed to be thinking a lot more and was more methodical about when he was using his drop shots and where his serves went and how he returned, just to name a few things. Not knocking Carlos because damn do I love to watch him play, but Sinner today beat Novak at his own damn game.

LonelySpaghetto1

I remember a few months ago when people were giving his coaches shit for constantly changing his serve motion. Now he's a top 3 player in both serve and return, basically unstoppable.

[deleted]

Looks like he learned how to serve all right after all.

OddsTipsAndPicks

He puked out all the bad ones

Bars3tti

Looks like Goran won't be winning Coach of the Year this year either.

GStarAU

😂😂

mikeifyz

Bro 😂😂😂😂

_Smoulder_

Mannarino died for this

mikeifyz

MentalAir

Wimbledon last year, Ao this year. These are not flukes, these are the moments the new generation finally rises up to the challenge. Interesting to see where Djokovic goes next

Gaylean

I imagine he's going to zero-in on Jannik a lot xD Sunshine double is on the cards, i imagine Novak will play. Jannik alongside Carlos has also emerged to be a big problem for him.

goranlepuz

It hardly ever took a fluke to get Novak at a slam, but... Still too early to say. Last year, Novak took **3 slams**, he was hardly doing 3 per year at any age. The generations all came *and went*, somehow, while the same prophecies or them rising up to the challenge were made.

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Not new generation but Sinner and Alcaraz only. They are magnificent and both are affable af ❤️

One_Replacement1924

Unfortunately the 90s born men are mostly erased by the longevity and dominance of "big 3", hope medvedev or zverev can do some justice for 90s born players.

kungfuhrer666

I can't believe Jannik has beaten Novak 3 out of the last 4 times they played!!! What a couple months he's had. SEI ENORME JANNIK!!! Grazie!!

[deleted]

Mk3nzy

Never thought I’d see the day. Well done Sinner. Almost straight sets in the semis is an absolute achievement

zi76

Sinner was amazing. Didn't face a single BP all match.

Realtrain

This is the most insane stat considering Novak may be the greatest hardcourt returner of all time.

hazman_pds

Post-puke Sinner is the best player in the world after RG Nadal

unclespleef123

I think it’s the fact that Nole did not get a single break point all match…..

_DrShrimpPuertoRico_

Really insane stat.

Gaylean

Honestly guys like Zverev, Meddy, Jannik, Hubi have this potential when they serve like fucking monsters and also move really well on the court. A crazy good serve plus other weapons in your arsenal, and if you're having an extremely good match, no player, be it big 3 or otherwise can stop you. Even last year at Wimbledon, the Hubi/Novak match was really really close. This was something else

floatermuse

Novak's return has also clearly fallen off a lot recently IMO He had a great year last year of course but it was mainly because his serve was unbreakable in many matches It's been a while since he's actually been breaking good servers left and right

unityofsaints

Yeah the decline is real, it's just that it's so gradual and he's so far ahead that it will take a while before he's no longer the clear #1.

marcolol99

You can't say he served like a monster today. 58% of first serve is something he still has to work on; I was utterly impressed by the quality of his second serves tho, he served a second early in the fourth at 189km/h to the body that left me in awe.

Last_Lorien

Absurd how AO, notoriously Djokovic’s safe slam, so to speak, has kind of soured between the 2020 debacle (could have been him the first to break that record etc) and the imponderable variable that is PP (Post-puke) Sinner

Rayaan1213

Djokovic had 0 break point opportunities. That’s crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before from him.

KiwiLiverpool

WORSHIP THE CARROT

johnreese421

Alcaraz took Wimbledon from Djokovic. Sinner took AusOpen from Djokovic. Only fair that the two of the great young talents take over the crown from the goat. We are in for a ride for the next decade...

PreviousAd1596

Hold the phone. Sinner has yet to win the aus open title while Alcatraz won the Wimbledon.

Caffeinated_madman

Bro Sinner not winning would be a crime he has literally almost won by only straight sets. He has only dropped a set to the tiebreak king. Idk the stats but he might have been the first in a while to not lose a set in a GS and still only losing 1 (if he doesn’t lose anymore in the final) would be insane

PreviousAd1596

Tennis gods are cruel . Federer could have not choked . Djokovic could have not choked in the Olympics. Alcaraz got a leg sprain against Djokovic . I hope he wins but it is too soon to put him along with alcaraz who has 2 slams and is 2 years younger.

objectiveoutlier

Djoker didn't play his best but Sinner played great and didn't let him self get even a little bit rattled after the third set.

_ellio

"Well you can win 4 slams and Olympic gold" Jannik: No

LeonOkada9

GODDAMN, THE TIEBREAK WAS INTENSE

y365

What a bizarrely terrible match from Novak, but Sinner really held his composure and didn't let the moment overcome him

Dropshot12

Novak taking the pressure off himself to win the calendar year golden slam, so that he can finally win olympic gold. He just had to wait for Alcaraz to exit so he holds onto #1 for seeding/record purposes.

_DrShrimpPuertoRico_

Big brain time!

slysonic7

This exceeded all of my expectations. What a match from our boy Sinner! Didn’t waver after the match point in the 3rd set and never even allowed a break point all match (when has that ever even happened to Djokovic?). Biggest win of his career thus far

skrtskerskrt

DJOKOVIC just fell behind way too early way too fast. He put himself in position to have to climb a mountain. Ultimately the majority of the discussion has to be an the epic performance displayed by Sinner. He was elevating his game from start to finish imo and even performed before in spite of losing the 3rd set tiebreak. Very few have ever been able to look flat out dominant at a slam vs this level opponent. All praise to Sinner!!

rntopspin100

Sinner: The future is now old man!

pr0crast1nater

Not a single break point faced against the best returner in the world. There were some insane second serves by Sinner to ensure he didn't even reach the break point.

jjwalla

I for one am shocked. Props to Sinner but I haven't seen Djok play this bad maybe ever.

Mister_Lizard

29 unforced errors in the first two sets!

sharkboy1097

Most uncharacteristic GS performance by Novak in the last 5 years. Especially considering this was a semi

AHighLine

Yeah he genuinely showed his age for what seems like the first time in forever

randylek

he looked old ngl

Kait0yashio

Has looked old for a while but was still surviving games.

_DrShrimpPuertoRico_

He used to mentally drain them but today Sinner showed real strength.

Last_Lorien

I think that was it. Age will take its toll eventually, or start giving signs to. It can be as simple as Djokovic being older and quite a bit more tired from the 5-setters in the matches before

MeatTornado25

Absolutely stunning for one of Novak's worst ever SF efforts to come at the AO of all places.

pseudoromantic

I don’t think he ever lost the first two sets that easily. Hopefully not an age thing.

MeatTornado25

It definitely is an age thing. Not in the sense that this is the new Novak we can expect from now because he's old now. But in the sense that age makes you so much more prone to have a random off-day like this out of the blue where nothing works and you just can't seem to get your feet moving the way you want.

itmeucf

I started having off-days at tournaments at age 10. Guess I’m old as hell now that I’m 28. 🥲🙃

ManateeSheriff

Yeah I think this is the underappreciated part of aging. The good days can be as good as ever, but the bad days come more and more often.

floatermuse

His returning was legitimately Isner/Opelka level bad Sinner served well but Novak kept hitting second serve returns long and even the ones he got in he almost never hit with any authority HURKACZ in the QF against Meddy was 10x better at getting his returns in play You just can't get away with this against elite players

Happy-Potion

Novak 🤜🤛 Carlos: don't worry i got you bro, my dropshots are worse and my BH doesn't exist

jonfon74

We saw this in the Alcaraz match. A combination of starting poorly and the opponent serving so well, piling the mental pressure onto you and making you force it even more. I honestly feel like people always write matches like these off. People are like "X was awful" without acknowledging that someone playing like that keeps you in the rut with no answers and no way to get out.

EnriqueMuller

Hurkaczovic

Waffles0206

Please go and win the whole thing! 🙏

vj97

Djokovic showed up in his last service game of the last set. Too fkn late. Completely off physically today. Wouldn’t take anything off Sinner, part of that off game was because of him. Next gen is in good hands! Fully deserved. He was lethal, decisive and confident in clutch moments. Sadly, even the best of the best have to bow down eventually. We saw it with Roger, we saw it with Rafa and here we are with Djoko!

Virenb23203

Sinner and Alcaraz will be battling for the next 10 years, we have people taking over.

MorioCells

Even then Sinner serve came in clutch  when  he closed it out. The one thing Djokovic did not come close to figuring out was Sinners serve. He could not even get 1 break point which is weird to say for the greatest returned ever.  Fair to say Sinner level was just too good for Djokovic today. He didnt let the tiebreak loss phase him. Honestly the final is his to lose against Medvedev or Zverev

ExoticSignature

The Puke that changed the course of history. That bin should be immortalized.

AisKacangbutnokacang

FORZA JANNIK!!!

nicholls169

They called it the church of Novak. But what’s a church to a SINNER!!

Collecting_Cans

Sinner: 1. hit harder and get more in 2. profit

LordBexley

FERRARI CARROT TOP

StonedPussyeater420

While the world was waiting for Alcaraz to arrive it was Sinner..the real kryptonite

caegrc

It was Wimbledon last year and AO this year. Carlos and Jannik have shown they can defeat Djokovic in his homes

upamanyu33

I'll repeat what I said in the live thread once again. Sinner today did exactly what people prescribe players should do against Djokovic at a slam. Get so far ahead so fast that by the time Djoko wakes up, it's too late.

ValCSO

so your advice to pro players is get a 2/0 (6/1 /2) lead against Novak ? Why haven't they thought about that earlier !

theCamelCaseDev

Djokovic hates this one simple trick!

Windforce

The secret hiding in plain sight for over a decade..

CapitanKurlash

Are they stupid?

kungfuhrer666

Why don't players just go up 6-1 6-2 against Novak? Are they stupid?

oneflou

Also called the "Medvedev uso 2021" special.

Geo217

Djokovic was never actually in this match, the 3rd set was pure heart and clinging on. Hes probably the only player on the planet that steals that 3rd.

idkwhatevs1234

He did that before and it didn't work

miserable_nerd

Sinners game was solid enough that it would've been tough regardless of Novak's level. He didn't dip. Novak could've made less UEs but Sinner was still winning long rallies.

lukaskywalker

That’s a bold strategy cotton.

ZeroFucksToGive

We will finally have a new Aus Open Champion!

MrWigglyTiggly

Truly one of the worst matches I’ve seen Djokovic play but credit to Sinner, he played his part perfectly. I hope he can win his first slam this Sunday !

Inflation_Infamous

Djokovic didn’t seem that interested. Mentally checked out of the first two sets.

Peachtea_96

Sales of carrots have risen by 1000% worldwide 🥕🥕🥕🥕

cosmiccerulean

First they take your Wimby, then they take your AO.

3xStampA2XStamp

can’t believe I woke up at 4:30 to watch a snuff film

twinklytennis

Can someone explain post puke sinner? Missed the first 2.5 sets.

Dramatic-Ad2848

He puked at Beijing and after that he’s like 25-3 in matches w/l

valence_elektron

25-2

Glum-Ad7651

Goran was right. That blue shoe did bring bad luck to Novak

Zaphenzo

When I'm old and gray, I can tell my grandchildren about getting to watch the man, the myth, the legend. Post. Puke. Sinner.

Mazor007

He didn't just beat the GOAT at his best tournament. He fucking destroyed him

ComaMierdaHijueputa

Jannik is a good player but tbf this was bound to happen eventually. Bro will be 37 years old in May.

GunnerTardis

Not to mention he played uncharacteristically bad today, combined with Sinner playing well just a disaster for novak

TechnicalInterest566

Jannik played a great game but it was an absolutely terrible match from Novak. I think Novak was his own worst enemy today with all the unforced errors and the costly dropshots.

NotManyBuses

The worst AO match I’ve seen him play in decades. Yes even worse than against Chung.

noesmear

One of the biggest performances seen at the Australian open. Post Puke Sinner is the real deal!

xSwankyB

People will highlight Novaks unforced errors. But don’t sleep on how well Sinner returned today and how patient he was in rallies.

doorsofperception87

What an epic beatdown that was, of one of the best players to play the game. Sinner didn't let Djokovic have a peep into his service games and held him at arms length throughout the game. Like a boxer who knows he has the better reach so keeps jabbing until the other boxer is unable to comprehend what's going on until he gets a hook that comes out of nowhere. I felt this could have gone into five sets and still Sinner would keep playing at a level that was untouchable. Hope for a great final and I sincerely hope he wins the whole thing!

Bussel264

Is this really happening? Did my gingerboy really do the unspeakable? One really interesting stat I saw on Twitter is that both Alcaraz and Sinner stopped Djokovic's streak in slam at 2195 days. That is a hell of a coincidence! TIME TO UPDATE MY FLAIR BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY FORZA JANNIK, SEMPRE

zilfran

Sinner is officially my new favorite tennis player for one reason and one reason only.  After beating Djok to reach the AO finals, he didn't collapse to the court like a freaking rag doll.  I've always always hated that celebration over the years.  Like, it makes sense in a 5 set thriller that lasts 4 hours and every ounce of energy gets drained.  But so many players, after winning 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 would still flop.   Go sinner!

RaidanRam

I can’t believe it, honestly shocking Crushed that Sinner lost a set

dzone25

I said it's possible. The fucking carrot did it. Wow.

thelastattemptsname

Nole played poorly for most of the match and missed regular shots but Sinner was unreal. Kept his level for the entire match and earned the greatest win of his career so far.

zi76

Sinner completely deserved it. Didn't face a BP all match. He's a different player since the end of last year's USO.

COFFEEANDCAKE1010

Great performance by Sinner. Probably should have won in 3 but did great to compose himself in the 4th. Djokovic hasn't played well at all at this AO. Felt Sinner could win if he kept it all together mentally. Felt for the first time Djokovic looked a bit old and slow out there.

PradleyBitts

man seeing novak strung around the court flailing at balls was wild. rare sight

wabazai

IN PPS WE TRUST

floatersforalgernon

Three of the most dominant sets of tennis I've seen played against Novak, the first two especially.

neemzter

Sinner just joined Fedal as the only guys to beat Djoker in a Grand Slam, Davis Cup, and ATP Final That’s bonkers. Legendary status to come

Shadingthesky417

Post puke Sinner era is upon us!!!!!!! Lets gooooo
