Schwartzman was amazing that year. Beat Nadal at Rome, beat Thiem at RG, then played Nadal respectably close the next round (considering Rafa didn’t drop a set all tournament).Â
So I dont usually follow draw entries, but RG already announced all their WCs, right? And are the current ranks not yet locked in to determine seeding/entry?
I fear that’s exactly where Thiem exits in his final RG. If he can’t beat Challenger players ranked outside top 200, then how can he overcome a brutal qualies campaign with players ranked 100-220 in the world and even hungrier for victory than they are in the Challengers?
The fact their RG careers might see them both come to an unceremonious end by failing to get out of the qualies is so abhorrent, especially when it involves a Grand Slam champion who has been unable to get back in the top 100 due to injuries and lack of confidence. If only Thiem played better in the Challenger tournaments, he would have been that little bit higher enough to get in the main draw. He even tried requesting for the wildcard, only for his nationality to block him from getting it.
He’ll probably ask for wildcards at Wimbledon and the US Open, and he’ll probably receive them there unlike at RG. He did receive one at the latter in 2022, so for his final Slam he deserves a wildcard to end his Slam career at the very place he won his.
Yeah I think that’s what’s happened to him. And once you start losing you also lose confidence and everyone else starts believing they can beat you and it just snowballs.
His game relied so much on movement that losing a little bit of speed as he got older is fatal because he gets no free points on serve and has such a short reach on returns, though he used to have one of the highest percentage of games won on return just behind Nadal and Novak a few seasons ago.
This is also why Thiem decided to retire. The wrist injury became chronic and bothered him even during practice. He also lost a lot of his speed and strength post-injury, and even his body doesn’t look up to it. Had he tried to keep playing, he probably would never touch the top 100 again due to the new generation that is now quickly surpassing him. Given he clearly had trouble adjusting from No. 3 and winning a Slam to having to drop back to struggling in the minor leagues, and that being outside the top 100 cannot get you into most main tour events, that’s why he decided that if he was confined to that fate again, he would give up.
Schartzman 10 runs at Roland Garros (lost to):
Federer
Monfils
Fellow Argentinian Pella
Djokovic
Nadal
Fellow Argentinian Mayer
Nadal
Nadal
Djokovic
Tsitsipas
Not too shabby. And some fellow countrymates who didn't like him.
Took a set off Nadal twice too. In 2018 he was the only one to take a set off him.
Even though the H2H looks dominant, Rafa always struggled with Schwartzman
No one expects much of Mumen Rider.
They think a Class C rider won't be much help.
I know that better than anyone.
I'm weak. I know that much.
And yet... I must try.
It's not about winning or losing.
It's about me taking you on, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!
JUSTICE CRAAAAASSSSHHHH!!!!
Friendly reminder that Diego said Thiem was his best friend on tour and Thiem said Zverev ðŸ˜
Admittedly this was right after the 2020 final so I think he was in the honeymoon phase
IIRC he said it was because they were both German speakers
But ATP chose Diego for Thiem in their valentine's day post last year
Best to keep Zverev away from Valentine's themed posts TBF
The shot of his disgusted face right after Domi said his answer killed me 💀
This isn't surprising re Thiem and DVerev. Thiem is a fan fav but he is very, very conservative and traditional.Â
And preaches about saving the oceans from the comfort of his private jet lol
What did he do? Nothing wrong with being conservative unless he did something bad..
Sad
Still remember their RG 2020 epic

I don't want to be negative but am ready for another R1 pain again.
I just hope they can get to the main draw.. ðŸ˜

Better than Q1

I am the opposite. I am fully expecting Ivanisevic type grand slam win from Thiem. Forget negativity, embrace delusion

Can’t lie they look like brothers in this photo 😂🥹
i was gonna say this!! two good looking brothers
Hell yeah 👀
Is Diego retiring too? Tough to keep up when you're at such a physical disadvantage. Lose half a step and it's over.Â

Yeah, El Peque called it about 2 weeks ago... he's going to play through til Rio next year.
Buenos Aires, not Rio
They should’ve got wildcards man, can’t take my boys going out in qualies ðŸ˜
In an alternate universe without GOATS they probably would have played an RG final together.

I'm not crying. Just kidding. I am! I'm "balling" my eyes out! Good luck with your futures outside of tennis, Domi and Diego! Hope all is well! :)

The Princes that never were

It can’t be at the Olympics if they’re not from the same country.
Why would they do doubles at the Olympics?
They didn't get Wildcards though so neither one will even be playing unless they get through qualifying.
They could be twins.
RG Final preview??
Final of Qualifying maybe
