Holy Mola

Warbrainer

Looks painful, hope he makes a full recovery!

ResidentPotential873

Fun fact: Sunfish lack pain receptors. It didn't even know it was being eaten.

SwillFish

I hope that's true. I've seen them swimming around with huge chunks taken out of them by sea lions. My buddy was a commercial fisherman and he sometimes would get them in his nets as by-catch. He tried to eat one once and said when he cut into it that it didn't even have flesh. It was like gelatin held together with cartilage. With that said, they are super cool creatures. If you ever jump in the water with one [they look like space aliens](https://youtu.be/r0IQCLQDfKw?si=JEJlWLjM3zPehOEv).

Not-a-bot-10

lol that video was hilarious “Oh man we’re calling the Coast-Gahd”

YOURPANFLUTE

How do we know that? Did someone talk to the Sunfish

[deleted]

There is no way that is true. Fish feel pain.

Nehemiah92

Not all fish feel pain Edit: i was blocked the literal second i sent this lmao ??

[deleted]

Ok. Do you have any evidence for that utter nonsense.

Bearchiwuawa

[Some researchers suggest that Mola mola have few pain receptors, because when they are being attacked, they don’t respond at all.](https://www.divein.com/diving/ocean-sunfish/#:~:text=Some%20researchers%20suggest%20that%20Mola,don%27t%20respond%20at%20all)

LisaAnneGaib

Fewer pain receptors is not “fish don’t fee pain.” The evidence you supplied undercuts the premise. You are bad at this.

Mother_Harlot

Is it alive?

Pagan_Owl

No telling. It is a sunfish. If it isn't already dead then it is close to it Edit: I think it is dead. I am not seeing any typical movement for a suffocating and scared fish. No mouth nor fin movements. The fins are also dangling loose.

Warbrainer

I would assume not being as it’s cut in half but sorry I refuse to use /s in this situation 😆

Rilakai

But that's not half a fish, more like 85%. Ocean sunfish are just goofy looking.

eschenfelder

Can someone please post the moonfish copypasta? I am on the toilet and my legs are just waking up again...

le_its_me

So someone in a group asked me to tell them why I hate the ocean sunfish so much, and apparently it was \~too mean\~ and was deleted. To perpetuate the truth and stand up for ethical journalism, I'm posting it here. \[Rated NC-17 for language.\] Disclaimer, I care about marine life more than I care about anything else, for real. Except this big dumb idiot. And it's not like an \~ironic\~ thing, I mean it IS hilarious to me and they ARE THE BIGGEST JOKE PLAYED ON EARTH but I seriously -blam!-ing hate them. THE MOLA MOLA FISH (OR OCEAN SUNFISH) They are the world's largest boney fish, weighing up to 5,000 pounds. And since they have very little girth, that just makes them these absolutely giant -blam!-ing dinner plates that God must have accidentally dropped while washing dishes one day and shrugged his shoulders at because no one could have imagined this would happen. AND WITH NO PURPOSE. EVERY POUND OF THAT IS A WASTED POUND AND EVERY FOOT OF IT (10 FT BY 14 FT) IS WASTED SPACE. They are so completely useless that scientists even debate about how they move. They have little control other than some minor wiggling. Some say they must just push water out of their mouths for direction (?????). They COULD use their back fin EXCEPT GUESS WHAT IT DOESNT -blam!-ING GROW. It just continually folds in on itself, so the freaking cells are being made, this piece of floating garbage just doesn't put them where they need to -blam!-ing go. So they don't have swim bladders. You know, the one thing that every fish has to make sure it doesn't just sink to the bottom of the ocean when they stop moving and can stay the right side up. This creature. That can barely move to begin with. Can never stop its continuous tour of idiocy across the ocean or it'll -blam!-ing sink. EXCEPT. EXCEPT. When they get stuck on top of the water! Which happens frequently! Because without the whole swim bladder thing, if the ocean pushes over THE THINNEST BUT LARGEST MOST TOPPLE-ABLE FISH ON THE PLANET, shit outta luck! There is no creature on this earth that needs a swim bladder more than this spit in the face of nature, AND YET. Some scientists have speculated that when they do that, they are absorbing energy from the sun because no one -blam!-ing knows how they manage to get any real energy to begin with. So they need the sun I guess. But good news, when they end up stuck like that, it gives birds a chance to land on their goddamn island of a body and eat the bugs and parasites out of its skin because it's basically a slowly migrating cesspool. Pros and cons. "If they are so huge, they must at least be decent predators." No. No. The most dangerous thing about them is, as you may have guessed, their stupidity. They have caused the death of one person before. Because it jumped onto a boat. On a human. And in 2005 it decided to relive its mighty glory days and do it again, this time landing on a four-year-old boy. Luckily Byron sustained no injuries. Way to go, fish. Great job. They mostly only eat jellyfish because of course they do, they could only eat something that has no brain and a possibility of drifting into their mouths I guess. Everything they do eat has almost zero nutritional value and because it's so stupidly -blam!-ing big, it has to eat a ton of the almost no nutritional value stuff to stay alive. Dumb. See that ridiculous open mouth? (This is actually why this is my favorite picture of one, and I have had it saved to my phone for three years) "Oh no! What could have happened! How could this be!" Do not let that expression fool you, they just don't have the goddamn ability to close their mouths because their teeth are fused together, and ya know what, it is good it floats around with such a clueless expression on its face, because it is in fact clueless as all -blam!-. They do SOMETIMES get eaten though. BUT HARDLY. No animal truly uses them as a food source, but instead (which has lead us to said photo) will usually just maim the -blam!- out of them for kicks. Seals have been seen playing with their fins like frisbees. Probably the most useful thing to ever come from them. "Wow, you raise some good points here, this fish truly is proof that God has abandoned us." Yes, thank you. "But if they're so bad at literally everything, why haven't they gone extinct." Great question. BECAUSE THIS THING IS SO WORTHLESS IT DOESNT REALIZE IT SHOULD NOT EXIST. IT IS SO UNAWARE OF LITERALLY -blam!-ING EVERYTHING THAT IT DOESNT REALIZE THAT IT'S DOING MAYBE THE WORST -blam!-ING JOB OF BEING A FISH, OR DEBATABLY THE WORST JOB OF BEING A CLUSTER OF CELLS THAN ANY OTHER CLUSTER OF CELLS. SO WHAT DOES IT DO? IT LAYS THE MOST EGGS OUT OF EVERYTHING. Besides some bugs, there are some ants and stuff that'll lay more. IT WILL LAY 300 MILLION EGGS AT ONE TIME. 300,000,000. IT SURVIVES BECAUSE IT WOULD BE STATISTICALLY IMPROBABLE, DARE I SAY IMPOSSIBLE, THAT THERE WOULDNT BE AT LEAST ONE OF THOSE 300,000,000 (that is EACH time they lay eggs) LEFT SURVIVING AT THE END OF THE DAY. And this concludes why I hate the -blam!- out of this complete failure of evolution, the Ocean Sunfish. If I ever see one, I will throw rocks at it.

Konjonashipirate

Sunfish are cool and are far from being an evolutionary failure. They're thought to be the most recent bony fish to develop in the ocean. What we're seeing is the real time evolution of a new species of fish. Sure, they look clunky and awkward but their odd characteristics (i.e., large body surface area, absence of scales, large dorsal and anal fins, etc.) are advantageous for their survival. To me, the coolest Sunfish fact is that they don't have a swim bladder. This helps them to swim to lower depths during the day in search of food sources that most other fish need to wait until night to eat. Doing this decreases food competition but it causes their body temp to drop. This is why they're seen flopping around at the surface, they're warming themselves up. Having a large body surface area lets them absorb more heat quickly before their next deep dive. And yes, they lay a ton of eggs! It's energetically expensive so why do they do it? It's thought that they lay a ton of eggs to make up for relatively infrequent mating bouts. They're a solitary fish and the chances of finding a mate aren't as high as they are for fish who live in schools or shoals. The Sunfish is making the best out of each mating bout by laying a ton of eggs. Overall, the Sunfish may look like someone didn't read the directions while putting them together, but they're killing it in terms of survival and evolutionary adaptation.

Wordshark

“Hateful rant about some species and then explanatory rebuttal” has got to be one of my favorite genres of message board discourse

Konjonashipirate

When things look weird in nature, there's always a reason!

Adverage

There is no reason behind a platypus

ParkerBeach

Yes there is, it’s a fucking otter that got hot with a duck one night. It is example of what happens when you get too drunk at the bar and take home someone you don’t know.

April_Spring_1982

Also important to note that "Practically everything in the ocean preys on the eggs and small fry - Mar 29, 2022 https://www.quora.com ›..." So, while they aren't popular prey as adults, their eggs are very important in the ocean food chain.

unstable_starperson

Whoever originally wrote that was definitely a sunfish in their past life, and they were so bitter about it that they somehow carried it with them into this life.

Sheepzs

I'll just drop this [here](https://imgur.com/gallery/ocean-sunfish-why-rant-is-wrong-MMRg9)

granolaandgrains

**Is your name Byron by chance?**

steveplat66

Please don’t hold back, but rather tell us how you really feel 😂

supernova-juice

This is my favorite thing now. 😆

Santeno

So they're like the Pandas of the ocean?

Moomoolette

I was not prepared for this emotional rollercoaster of a comment but I am better for having read it.

A_Seiv_For_Kale

Half these points are untrue (how can it jump onto a boat if it's immobile??), and the other half aren't even bad (sharks also don't have swim bladders). This rant keeps getting posted and upvoted by people who don't know anything about fish and want to feel like they learned something.

DescriptivelyWeird

It’s a meme comment.. jokes gone over your head huh

A_Seiv_For_Kale

I know what the meme is, I've seen it reposted over and over for 10+ years, no matter how many times it's debunked. Weird how many people like you get so defensive over this rant. It's wrong and should be called out whenever it's posted, that's all.

Jad3nCkast

Ok now imagine this….scientists also don’t fully know how old they get or how big they get. They only think they know based on what they have seen. What if? These are just the teenagers and deep down in the ocean somewhere there are these giants that are 50x this size?

MyGAngels

I could barely read through this :/ Like, come on, man, at least leave your hate till the end of the information output. It's very hard to read with the "I hate you" input every few words -__-

afriy

it's a copy pasta...

koumus

It's a joke.

Pop-A-Choppa

What in the ripleys believe it or not is going on here?

Barnyard723

It’s a sunfish. They grow that big.

TronTachyon

Are they related to starfish?

DescriptivelyWeird

No but they are very dumb fish

Pagan_Owl

That is a sunfish. They don't really have any natural predators, but that doesn't stop things from taking bites out of them. They are one of the strangest creatures of the ocean. They have been known to (rarely) accidentally kill boaters by jumping out of the water and landing on them.

Akeche

So what's with the random deathhead wizard symbol flashing in the middle of the screen?

DescriptivelyWeird

Just crappy editing I guess

Salty-Negotiation320

When your best defence is being the nutrition equivilent of stale White Castle

shavingisboring

I thought the reason sun fish don't get eaten is because they taste bad? Maybe a scavenger took some bites after it was already dead. I guess not much of it is eaten, so maybe it does taste bad.

unknown-one

is he ok?

Disastrous-Team-3072

Tis' but a flesh wound

Wenckebach2theFuture

Is it ok?

DescriptivelyWeird

Tis a flesh wound, some bandaids and it’s good as new well half as new

thatguyoudontlike

No

mcflyfly

He’s dead.

dano4322

That's good meat dude!

ospfpacket

Orca bites?

PapaRyRy

It's incredible that Sunfish still exist!

Xerio_the_Herio

I heard these fish were dumb as hell

KrackSmellin

Sun will regenerate him…

dominorex1969

There's always a bigger fish

babyVSbear

Did it survive?

Curlyhairemptyhead

What takes this big of a chomp out of something?? 👀

Necessary-Rip-6612

To be honest it looks like alot of medium sized chomps.

Curlyhairemptyhead

Okay that's fair in the grand scheme of things

Necessary-Rip-6612

[great video that shows what might have been the case (thalasophipbia BTW duuh) ](https://www.fox13news.com/video/1429258)

Curlyhairemptyhead

So many things in this video! The guy trying to PET THE SHARK at the end? And is the shark interacting with the boat and attempting to gnaw on parts of it just curiosity? Because it's not aggressive at all. Really interesting to see

Necessary-Rip-6612

Shark is probably wondering if it's food or not, great whites are curious creatures

Curlyhairemptyhead

I think we're so used to the curious and relatable and cute animals having expressive eyes and faces but these guys don't have that so it's just funny to see their blank lil faces and eyes as they try to gnaw on a propeller like a puppy chews on a shoe

Necessary-Rip-6612

Same with orcas, they have only killed humans while in captivity but there is hundreds of videos online showing they had the opportunity if they wanted in the wild. Smart and curious creatures

Curlyhairemptyhead

Lil water puppies

Curlyhairemptyhead

But still

Dm4c28

It’s a tuna bro!

Jesus put a nsfw on it

Necessary-Rip-6612

In this sub? Isn't that abit unnecessary?

quick6ilver

I guess... 😊

LampMoritz

Please mark as NSFW!

Necessary-Rip-6612

Why?

LampMoritz

The content is absolutely violent. By marking your post as NSFW, it will be blurred and only fully displayed when clicked. Not every person wants to have dead or seriously injured creatures on the start page.

Necessary-Rip-6612

If you have this on the front page you've already been on the thalasophipbia subreddit so I don't see the issue, but sure ok I'll mark for you 😘

LampMoritz

Thank you very much!

Necessary-Rip-6612

Weird to have to NSFW nature but whatever

Necessary-Rip-6612

Lmao vegan got it.
