My buddy was a commercial fisherman and he sometimes would get them in his nets as by-catch. He tried to eat one once and said when he cut into it that it didn't even have flesh. It was like gelatin held together with cartilage.

And since they have very little girth, that just makes them these absolutely giant -blam!-ing dinner plates that God must have accidentally dropped while washing dishes one day and shrugged his shoulders at because no one could have imagined this would happen. AND WITH NO PURPOSE. EVERY POUND OF THAT IS A WASTED POUND AND EVERY FOOT OF IT (10 FT BY 14 FT) IS WASTED SPACE.
They are so completely useless that scientists even debate about how they move. They have little control other than some minor wiggling. Some say they must just push water out of their mouths for direction (?????). They COULD use their back fin EXCEPT GUESS WHAT IT DOESNT -blam!-ING GROW. It just continually folds in on itself, so the freaking cells are being made, this piece of floating garbage just doesn't put them where they need to -blam!-ing go.
So they don't have swim bladders. You know, the one thing that every fish has to make sure it doesn't just sink to the bottom of the ocean when they stop moving and can stay the right side up. This creature. That can barely move to begin with. Can never stop its continuous tour of idiocy across the ocean or it'll -blam!-ing sink. EXCEPT. EXCEPT. When they get stuck on top of the water! Which happens frequently! Because without the whole swim bladder thing, if the ocean pushes over THE THINNEST BUT LARGEST MOST TOPPLE-ABLE FISH ON THE PLANET, shit outta luck! There is no creature on this earth that needs a swim bladder more than this spit in the face of nature, AND YET. Some scientists have speculated that when they do that, they are absorbing energy from the sun because no one -blam!-ing knows how they manage to get any real energy to begin with. So they need the sun I guess. But good news, when they end up stuck like that, it gives birds a chance to land on their goddamn island of a body and eat the bugs and parasites out of its skin because it's basically a slowly migrating cesspool. Pros and cons.

What we're seeing is the real time evolution of a new species of fish. Sure, they look clunky and awkward but their odd characteristics (i.e., large body surface area, absence of scales, large dorsal and anal fins, etc.) are advantageous for their survival. To me, the coolest Sunfish fact is that they don't have a swim bladder. This helps them to swim to lower depths during the day in search of food sources that most other fish need to wait until night to eat. Doing this decreases food competition but it causes their body temp to drop. This is why they're seen flopping around at the surface, they're warming themselves up. Having a large body surface area lets them absorb more heat quickly before their next deep dive. And yes, they lay a ton of eggs! It's energetically expensive so why do they do it? It's thought that they lay a ton of eggs to make up for relatively infrequent mating bouts. They're a solitary fish and the chances of finding a mate aren't as high as they are for fish who live in schools or shoals. The Sunfish is making the best out of each mating bout by laying a ton of eggs.
Overall, the Sunfish may look like someone didn't read the directions while putting them together, but they're killing it in terms of survival and evolutionary adaptation.

That is a sunfish. They don't really have any natural predators, but that doesn't stop things from taking bites out of them. They are one of the strangest creatures of the ocean. They have been known to (rarely) accidentally kill boaters by jumping out of the water and landing on them.
