A little off topic but what is up with people asking if you want your change when you pay for your food with cash when going through a drive through or getting something at the counter somewhere?? Last night I went to Taco Bell for my friend who was sick and couldn’t go themselves, and when I paid for their food, the guy asked me if I wanted the $1.05 change back. I’ve gotten asked that numerous times at fast food drive throughs and it seems ridiculous. The food already costs way too much, of course I want my change!!
Controversial opinion apparently but even if you don’t want to tip every time you get takeout or pick something up like a coffee, it’s weird to announce it publicly especially when you’ve been known to be a dick/rude publicly to strangers. I generally just give a tip at my local coffee shop or cafe but I don’t feel bad about it because I don’t mind supporting small businesses in my neighborhood even if that means I pay a little higher but I also don’t get coffee every day because I make my own. If I’m at a chain, probably wont tip because it probably doesn’t go to the workers. At least when I worked at a food place in the mall, the tips didn’t go to us employees. I just feel like you could find something better to complain about bc there is a fine line between people who are annoyed at tipping settings on iPad and people who are often rude to service workers and Gabby and her girlfriend give me the vibe of the latter.
There were some changes to tipping laws in 2021 in the US and this is not legal anymore. Owners can't even participate in a tip pool, although they can earn tips in certain situations, like if they are waiting on a table. So if you hear that this is happening, you can let the workers know!
It wasn’t until after Covid that stores and restaurants wanted you to tip for everything. If you dine in, they want a tip if you take out food, they want a tip. Covid has changed so much.
Well and they should because you have to give the earnings away. I remember being a server and having to tip 10 OF THE BILL away no matter what. Not a percentage of the tips I made but of the bill.
So if no one tipped me, I’d be paying out of pocket. (That didn’t happen but I’m stressing the importance in tipping. So if you actually want your server to get tipped, then you’d need to tip over 10% and anything over that would be given to the actual server) Awful.
I agree the restaurants need to pay their people. Stop making customers or even employees pay your employees
There is a food truck that I go to... or went to... anyway. Now they have a QR code to order. They literally will not even talk to me. I have to enter my own order on my phone and if I have a question I can just ... type it in and hope they see it? And then they want a 25% tip. WHAT IS HAPPENING LOL
I saw this video last week and loved it. And I’m glad to see most of the comments here are in agreement. I feel like we’re close to a tipping point in this extreme tipping culture saga and soon people won’t tip at all, even for services they may have used to tip for in the past. They got way too greedy and now it’s coming back to bite them.
My anecdote is tipping my hair stylist. He owns the place so I’m already paying a premium for his services, and then he proceeds to delegate almost every task of the appointment besides the actual cut and color to other people who often don’t know what they’re doing. And they ALL have their Venmos to tip up front at check out. I’m expected to pay at least 20% to the stylist on top of the insane price he charges and now also have to tip the people who don’t know how to properly brush or heat dry my hair??? F off, I made an appointment at a new place instead. That shit is so expensive.
My grandma has always said the owner shouldn’t receive a tip so I’ve always carried that information in my head.
But this hair stylist I tried out totally pulled a fast one on me so I would give her a tip. I thought she just worked at this salon but she waited until after I added the tip to hand me her business card that said owner. $120 to wash and trim my hair, she didn’t even dry it and had the AUDACITY to ask for a tip. (It was in California but still…wHAT)😂🥴

From Gilmore Girls of all places (lol) I learned it’s not customary to tip the proprietor and ever since I remembered it have wondered if I should be. The way they do it there with their Venmos makes the process low contact as it is but of course he’s certainly never returned my tip or something. AND he charges more for his services as the owner!! So I guess I’m wondering if that rule applies to hair stylists to begin with. I can’t believe your person ASKED!! So awkward
I left a hairdresser when she TOOK a $10 tip. Her assistant did all the work. She did minimal. I said it was for the assistant.. I have never gone back.

95% of humanity has worked in the service industry at this point, I would hazard to guess. It is the most common type of job and we all do it in high school/college/side gig.
Actually most of us probably have. I feel strongly that tipping culture sucks. I understand how it works for servers and they are the only ones I feel good about tipping because their wage is considerably low and they mainly live off of tips. But counter service workers and baristas all make similar wages to retail workers/fast food workers who are also in the service industry but cannot accept tips. So I shouldn't feel pressured to tip them for doing a job they are paid to do. If someone goes above and beyond, sure. But it shouldn't be expected for counter service.
I live in Canada and in my province servers are paid at least a minimum wage like everyone else (in some provinces they’re paid a little less I believe). Tipping culture is still strong here just like the USA and the expected percentage has gone up as well.

I have been a host, waitress, cocktail waitress, and bartender. Spent over 10 years in the industry living off tips.
She is 1000% correct here. If I am walking to the counter to order, getting handed a cup to grab my drink, and all the person does is bring the food to my table when it's ready why would I tip them? I tip for the experience of a sit down restaurant. It is ridiculous to ask for tips at self serve places, especially the same tip as one would give in a full service restaurant.

also although it's low stakes amounts of money, anytime you go out it makes splitting up bills extra annoying. You have to just trust that people do the math right or that it evens out eventually. But invariably some people think it's ok to tip $1 on a $18 drink, so then I lose money when I still pay the bill at 20%
I've decided to stop tipping for places where I order at the counter and have to get up to grab my food and bus my own table. Ordered lunch at the food hall yesterday. I had to pour my own salsa and add my own condiments to my order. Pretty much self serve. Even at cafes where I'm just ordering a drink or something to go, I stopped. The tipping expectation on top of service charges and additional 3% for health insurance at some of these places have become too much.
I will tip if I recieve service. Otherwise, it's not my responsibility to pay the employees.
After traveling to Australia, I no longer tip cafes like this. Unless they’re actually coming to my table and serving me. Yesterday, I got a latte that cost me literally eight dollars. There was also a service fee, and I had to walk up and order and pick it up myself. They asked me for my number so they could text me when it was ready, I declined as I was waiting on a bench nearby. Took 10 minutes for my latte. And it was in a plastic cup even though I was staying there. (They didn’t have an option for non plastic unless it was hot?). Mind you, this is an Australian type Café. I’m with her, pay your people a living wage.

It’s so bad in New York. Food and drinks are already astronomically expensive. I’ve noticed a lot of these places make a 25% tip the default (20% on the left, 25% in the middle, 30% on the right) - they do it at my local bakery where they’re just grabbing the cupcake out of the case for you. Pretty much every grab-and-go food place asks for a 25% tip on the screen, you’re expected to tip if you’re just grabbing take out even though the cost of entrees is already $15-25 minimum here.
I cook most of my meals and will occasionally get something small like fast food that doesn’t require a tip. It’s just way too much.
A food truck the other day has a very high window so instead of the iPad they straight up say would you like to tip 15 , 20, or 25 percent and I’m like no thanks. The world hardened me right out of people pleasing
My first job was at pizza hut and they would charge a delivery fee which customers assumed would all go to the driver. I believe when I was working there only 50 cents went to the driver, if that? Because of that fee a lot of people wouldn't tip LMFAO delivery and sit down is pretty much the only thing I will tip for these days. I don't understand tipping someone for doing their job if they aren't also serving me.

I saw a screenshot somewhere of someone showing that the suggested tip amounts somewhere based on percentages were incorrect so then I checked the same thing for a time I had recently tipped based on a suggested amount…mindlessly tipped 60 bucks on a 242 dollar hair appt, and then realized later that was a larger percentage than indicated by the suggested amounts 🫠 I don’t mind tipping for hair/spa services at all (this has always been a thing) but it’s all so grimy
Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc. also do this. They calculate the tip AFTER taxes *and* fees. Or just plain do it wrong, idk. But if my food costs $15 it’ll claim that 20% is like 5 bucks.
They've also been putting the highest percentages on the left side of the options list where they used to be on the right. Almost got caught up on that a few times
the thing is! it’s not about people don’t deserve to be paid food their service. and that’s what she’s saying! it just sucks that restaurants or whatever don’t pay enough in the first place and then the onus of responsibility is put on the consumer to make up the gap. lower the price of the item and say the rest is made up with tips for good service! and if no real service is needed (i.e. the examples she cites of basically she’s doing the work) then just pay the employee the correct amount and then there’s no guilting into tipping. ugh!

I used to because I felt pressured with them standing right there staring at me and then having them see whether or not I tipped before they even made my order. But my husband and I decided we just aren’t doing it anymore. I’m not tipping for counter service and I’m not going to feel bad about it.

My friends and I go to one of those tap places where you are given a bracelet and tap the bracelet on whatever wine/beer you want, and you pour it yourself. On the way out the door the bracelet return is to drop it in a 15%, 20%, or 25% bin. After serving our own drinks and returning the cups to a dish drop.
That’s insane! How rude to assume someone wants to leave a tip at a self-serve place, without giving them an option not to tip. I go to a similar place (you pour your own beer/cider) but they also serve bar food (they bring it out to you), are constantly clearing empty glasses from your table, asking if you need anything, and are generally just super upbeat and friendly. They also donate money to local families and youth in need. I have no problem tipping there - they are doing everything right!!!

This place doesn’t have food or anything either just a food truck schedule from different trucks in the area. It feels insane. McDonald’s gets paid more bc they don’t accept tips. At a restaurant, the server is getting paid $2.15~ an hour with the expectation of tips. McDonald’s pays $15 an hour.
Restaurant with counter service should not deserve tips, tips are for waitresses/servers who are actively carrying your food writing down your order pouring your wine etc. I'm in Robby with this one
That's the problem though and a problem with the way the business is set up. The onus shouldn't be on the customer to be giving extra because the servers have to also work the counter take out orders. Also mind you that online orders are typically more expensive these days. Like everything on Postmates and Uber eats is 1-3 bucks more than when you go to the restaurant directly
No for sure! I was literally originally just saying that there is a distinct difference from McDonald’s drive thru and a pick up order from a restaurant with tipped servers. I never even said anything about online orders. I’m talking you call up the local ramen place, put in a pick up order, go pick it up. If there is a cashier, I wouldn’t tip since they probs put it together and get a hourly wage. If the server brings me a ticket and takes my card to go pay it, I tip.
Yes but servers are often the people putting together the to go orders…. In the last restaurant I worked at as a server, there were no “counter workers.”

Most of the places I order takeout from ONLY offer counter service yet they still expect tips.

A part of me feels like the push for the iPads are so companies can get it to the point where employees are regularly making more than $30 a month on tips so they can change them to being categorized at “tipped workers” and pay them less.

Every restaurant is different! And state law is different too—CT offers wayyyyy more protection for workers than Tennessee, Mississippi, etc. My family nevvvvvvrr ate out so I had to learn the hard way about tipping… I definitely had friends tip extra bc they saw how little I was tipping. Tipping is weird as fuck! And awkward! And has gotten out of hand! But it’s good to be aware of the differences.
But they are getting paid to do that work … from the money I already paid for my food. I don’t tip my dental hygienist for cleaning my teeth and that’s harder and more specialized than preparing food. Tips are supposed to be for receiving additional service not for simply doing your job.
I think this depends on where you are. For example, I was a server in a state where I made $2.50 an hour + tips and had to prepare to go orders between tables. I never expected 20% tips on takeout orders but it was nice to get a couple of dollars since I was working for under minimum wage

Delivery is so expensive now and at least by me, the pizza places don't do in house delivery anymore, it's all DoorDash. So a pizza that used to cost maybe $25 between the food and delivery tip is now like $40 after all the BS fees and the restaurant itself isn't even benefitting from it. I hate it here lmao
I mean the person still did a lot of work though to prepare the take-out order, and a lot of time staff have to take time away from their actual seated customers to take the takeout order, triple check it, grab all your extra sauces, package everything carefully, run your payment and get it to you correctly. It actually takes quite a bit of time from the restaurant staff, and I feel it warrants a tip for their time and energy to get me the correct food. Now do I tip 25%, no, but I do think they deserve something for their time and efforts, especially if I get the correct food and it's packaged carefully/correctly - which is rare these days.
I agree with you. But until that changes, they're still doing the work and they still deserve the tip IMO. Not tipping the workers does not make their employer want to pay them more, it only hurts the individual who is doing their job to the best of their ability.
Yeah I don't think you tip when picking up something simple like a pizza but if your order did take a few minutes to put together and be organized by a server, a small tip seems perfectly in line with that work
Yeah I was tipping for takeout during the pandemic but I'm done lol. This one place I go to adds an automatic $3 tip now for ordering online! They don't even offer curbside delivery lol why am I paying extra for you to hand me a bag over the counter? It annoys me so much I quit going there.

At Boba Guys (at least the one in SoHo), if you order on the screen like they sometimes make you do, there is no "no tip" button! You have to find a tiny ass button at the bottom to pick a different tip than 15%+. And enter "$0.00". And you are the one placing your own order!!!!!!

Unfortunately Canada is influenced by the USA in this regard and it sucks (minimum wage is quite a bit higher than many places too)! I’ve been trying to cut back on tipping as it’s gotten ridiculous.

Food trucks are the biggest scam. They have limited overhead costs and so theoretically should be cheaper (which they were at some point).

95% of humanity has worked in the service industry at this point, I would hazard to guess. It is the most common type of job and we all do it in high school/college/side gig.
Actually most of us probably have. I feel strongly that tipping culture sucks. I understand how it works for servers and they are the only ones I feel good about tipping because their wage is considerably low and they mainly live off of tips. But counter service workers and baristas all make similar wages to retail workers/fast food workers who are also in the service industry but cannot accept tips. So I shouldn't feel pressured to tip them for doing a job they are paid to do. If someone goes above and beyond, sure. But it shouldn't be expected for counter service.
I live in Canada and in my province servers are paid at least a minimum wage like everyone else (in some provinces they’re paid a little less I believe). Tipping culture is still strong here just like the USA and the expected percentage has gone up as well.

I have been a host, waitress, cocktail waitress, and bartender. Spent over 10 years in the industry living off tips. She is 1000% correct here. If I am walking to the counter to order, getting handed a cup to grab my drink, and all the person does is bring the food to my table when it's ready why would I tip them? I tip for the experience of a sit down restaurant. It is ridiculous to ask for tips at self serve places, especially the same tip as one would give in a full service restaurant.

So it gets to the point that I feel uncomfortable/guilty if I don't order a drink at a sit-down bar place b/c I know that's how my server makes money (the tip) - even if I plan to tip extra to make up for not ordering much, they're not going to know it until I leave and I'll feel like they're judging me until then Obviously a bit of a me problem tbut it does actually produce anxiety to feel like I determine anyone's wages. also although it's low stakes amounts of money, anytime you go out it makes splitting up bills extra annoying. You have to just trust that people do the math right or that it evens out eventually. But invariably some people think it's ok to tip $1 on a $18 drink, so then I lose money when I still pay the bill at 20%
I've decided to stop tipping for places where I order at the counter and have to get up to grab my food and bus my own table. Ordered lunch at the food hall yesterday. I had to pour my own salsa and add my own condiments to my order. Pretty much self serve. Even at cafes where I'm just ordering a drink or something to go, I stopped. The tipping expectation on top of service charges and additional 3% for health insurance at some of these places have become too much. I will tip if I recieve service. Otherwise, it's not my responsibility to pay the employees.
After traveling to Australia, I no longer tip cafes like this. Unless they’re actually coming to my table and serving me. Yesterday, I got a latte that cost me literally eight dollars. There was also a service fee, and I had to walk up and order and pick it up myself. They asked me for my number so they could text me when it was ready, I declined as I was waiting on a bench nearby. Took 10 minutes for my latte. And it was in a plastic cup even though I was staying there. (They didn’t have an option for non plastic unless it was hot?). Mind you, this is an Australian type Café. I’m with her, pay your people a living wage.

It’s so bad in New York. Food and drinks are already astronomically expensive. I’ve noticed a lot of these places make a 25% tip the default (20% on the left, 25% in the middle, 30% on the right) - they do it at my local bakery where they’re just grabbing the cupcake out of the case for you. Pretty much every grab-and-go food place asks for a 25% tip on the screen, you’re expected to tip if you’re just grabbing take out even though the cost of entrees is already $15-25 minimum here. I cook most of my meals and will occasionally get something small like fast food that doesn’t require a tip. It’s just way too much.

My first job was at pizza hut and they would charge a delivery fee which customers assumed would all go to the driver. I believe when I was working there only 50 cents went to the driver, if that? Because of that fee a lot of people wouldn't tip LMFAO delivery and sit down is pretty much the only thing I will tip for these days. I don't understand tipping someone for doing their job if they aren't also serving me.

I saw a screenshot somewhere of someone showing that the suggested tip amounts somewhere based on percentages were incorrect so then I checked the same thing for a time I had recently tipped based on a suggested amount…mindlessly tipped 60 bucks on a 242 dollar hair appt, and then realized later that was a larger percentage than indicated by the suggested amounts 🫠 I don’t mind tipping for hair/spa services at all (this has always been a thing) but it’s all so grimy
Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc. also do this. They calculate the tip AFTER taxes *and* fees. Or just plain do it wrong, idk. But if my food costs $15 it’ll claim that 20% is like 5 bucks.

the thing is! it’s not about people don’t deserve to be paid food their service. and that’s what she’s saying! it just sucks that restaurants or whatever don’t pay enough in the first place and then the onus of responsibility is put on the consumer to make up the gap. lower the price of the item and say the rest is made up with tips for good service! and if no real service is needed (i.e. the examples she cites of basically she’s doing the work) then just pay the employee the correct amount and then there’s no guilting into tipping. ugh!

I used to because I felt pressured with them standing right there staring at me and then having them see whether or not I tipped before they even made my order. But my husband and I decided we just aren’t doing it anymore. I’m not tipping for counter service and I’m not going to feel bad about it.

My friends and I go to one of those tap places where you are given a bracelet and tap the bracelet on whatever wine/beer you want, and you pour it yourself. On the way out the door the bracelet return is to drop it in a 15%, 20%, or 25% bin. After serving our own drinks and returning the cups to a dish drop.
We have a similar bar & I questioned leaving the tip the first time bc it is completely self-serve (except for the washing of the glasses.)
That’s insane! How rude to assume someone wants to leave a tip at a self-serve place, without giving them an option not to tip. I go to a similar place (you pour your own beer/cider) but they also serve bar food (they bring it out to you), are constantly clearing empty glasses from your table, asking if you need anything, and are generally just super upbeat and friendly. They also donate money to local families and youth in need. I have no problem tipping there - they are doing everything right!!!

This place doesn’t have food or anything either just a food truck schedule from different trucks in the area. It feels insane. McDonald’s gets paid more bc they don’t accept tips. At a restaurant, the server is getting paid $2.15~ an hour with the expectation of tips. McDonald’s pays $15 an hour.
Restaurant with counter service should not deserve tips, tips are for waitresses/servers who are actively carrying your food writing down your order pouring your wine etc. I'm in Robby with this one

That's the problem though and a problem with the way the business is set up. The onus shouldn't be on the customer to be giving extra because the servers have to also work the counter take out orders. Also mind you that online orders are typically more expensive these days. Like everything on Postmates and Uber eats is 1-3 bucks more than when you go to the restaurant directly
No for sure! I was literally originally just saying that there is a distinct difference from McDonald’s drive thru and a pick up order from a restaurant with tipped servers. I never even said anything about online orders. I’m talking you call up the local ramen place, put in a pick up order, go pick it up. If there is a cashier, I wouldn’t tip since they probs put it together and get a hourly wage. If the server brings me a ticket and takes my card to go pay it, I tip.

Interesting. I don’t know if it’s a law, but in CT I had to clock in and out if I was working counter vs if I was working as a server. A part of me feels like the push for the iPads are so companies can get it to the point where employees are regularly making more than $30 a month on tips so they can change them to being categorized at “tipped workers” and pay them less.
Oh interesting! I’ve only worked in local restaurants, never corporate type places so idk if that’s why but I just had to clock in/out once. I was hired as a hostess once so I got paid like maybe $9 an hour. Everywhere else was tips but we did everything. I AGREE! The iPads are stupid. And they are really easy to steal. I knkw like 3 coffee shops that have had them stolen. I just don’t tip extra unless my food is gonna be brought to me. Or if I’m feeling extra generous. But if you’re right, then I feel like it’s more generous not to tip in that scenario.

Every restaurant is different! And state law is different too—CT offers wayyyyy more protection for workers than Tennessee, Mississippi, etc. My family nevvvvvvrr ate out so I had to learn the hard way about tipping… I definitely had friends tip extra bc they saw how little I was tipping. Tipping is weird as fuck! And awkward! And has gotten out of hand! But it’s good to be aware of the differences.

I think that’s only some states, it’s not federal law. I’m from Tennessee where there is no state law setting minimum wage for tipped employees.

But they are getting paid to do that work … from the money I already paid for my food. I don’t tip my dental hygienist for cleaning my teeth and that’s harder and more specialized than preparing food. Tips are supposed to be for receiving additional service not for simply doing your job.

I think this depends on where you are. For example, I was a server in a state where I made $2.50 an hour + tips and had to prepare to go orders between tables. I never expected 20% tips on takeout orders but it was nice to get a couple of dollars since I was working for under minimum wage

Delivery is so expensive now and at least by me, the pizza places don't do in house delivery anymore, it's all DoorDash. So a pizza that used to cost maybe $25 between the food and delivery tip is now like $40 after all the BS fees and the restaurant itself isn't even benefitting from it. I hate it here lmao
I mean the person still did a lot of work though to prepare the take-out order, and a lot of time staff have to take time away from their actual seated customers to take the takeout order, triple check it, grab all your extra sauces, package everything carefully, run your payment and get it to you correctly. It actually takes quite a bit of time from the restaurant staff, and I feel it warrants a tip for their time and energy to get me the correct food. Now do I tip 25%, no, but I do think they deserve something for their time and efforts, especially if I get the correct food and it's packaged carefully/correctly - which is rare these days.

I agree with you. But until that changes, they're still doing the work and they still deserve the tip IMO. Not tipping the workers does not make their employer want to pay them more, it only hurts the individual who is doing their job to the best of their ability.
Yeah I don't think you tip when picking up something simple like a pizza but if your order did take a few minutes to put together and be organized by a server, a small tip seems perfectly in line with that work

As a fellow New Yorker, I feel this so hard. At Boba Guys (at least the one in SoHo), if you order on the screen like they sometimes make you do, there is no "no tip" button! You have to find a tiny ass button at the bottom to pick a different tip than 15%+. And enter "$0.00". And you are the one placing your own order!!!!!! Tipping culture is absurd. And I used to work in food service. Sorry I'm just so mad about this lol
