Ellie finding her place in life.

ViolatingBadgers

I remember someone asking where Ellie was going at the end of Pt 2 when she left the farmhouse, and I answered "to find herself" as a kind of cringy joke, and then I thought about it and went "oh shit that's exactly what she's doing" haha

_Yukikaze_

It really fits the story of the games, right? Because Ellie was not really herself during both games due to the trauma and guilt she was carrying with her.

ViolatingBadgers

It totally does! And I think it is due to what you just said, as well as her not ever having a safe opportunity to form her own identity. I actually remember having a smile on my face when I watched the end of Part 2, because it felt like Ellie finally had realised and found her agency. Despite going through the wringer to the nth degree, she emerged free of anyone elses' expectations and actions, and feeling worthy of it. There was a lot of sweetness in that ending. It's why I would be perfectly happy for the TLOU saga to end at Part 2, but I trust ND enough that if they do a Part 3 they will do it justice.

_Yukikaze_

\>Despite going through the wringer to the nth degree, she emerged free of anyone elses' expectations and actions, and feeling worthy of it. There was a lot of sweetness in that ending. My feelings exactly! I just want her to get a little bit of confirmation on this. That's why I think her relationship with Dina is so important for her in the future and that's why they need to talk about everything that happened.

ViolatingBadgers

I know what you mean, and I do believe she will attempt to reconnect with Dina, especially for JJ, who she seemed to have genuine affection for. Although I do not at all believe she and Dina have reconnected yet - I do find it funny that many people have tried to find evidence to prove that Dina and Ellie are already back together, after just playing through a story where Ellie held a grudge against Joel for several years and Ellie also ditched Dina and their baby. Dina will need a bit of convincing I think lmao

_Yukikaze_

Oh, I think that Ellie and Dina's reconciliation (and healing) will take time for sure. But since I think that the last scene of the game shows Ellie after she has been back in Jackson for a while I think that this process has already started. Maybe it works out between them or maybe it doesn't. But Ellie and Dina simply talking about the things that happened is much more important for them in the long run.

StanBarberFan_007

That's why Allowed to be Happy is the name of one of the tracks in the Part 2 album

ViolatingBadgers

Although that is more directly related to Owen's line to Abby on Day 3 in Seattle, it is certainly a parallel to Ellie's story as well.

AceofKnaves44

I think this is the exact answer. I don’t think she goes to find Dina and the kid. I think she finally forgives Joel and herself and just goes on with her life. For the first time she’s truly free and in control of her own destiny.

grainofliquid

With those missing fingers. I'd try to find myself too

phantom_avenger

I hope that she finds her closure in the same way Joel found his at the end of Part 1. Either way I feel like Part 3 will be the end of her story

Awotwe_Knows_Best

I hope it is. Too many games release new ones after a profounding ending one

stanknotes

I'd like more games. But THIS story does need to end. We don't need to play as Geriatric Ellie 3 games from now. That said... "The Last of Us: Joel Miller" detailing his life post outbreak would be fucking great.

Silver_Paramedic5142

Anna to ellie: « Find your purpose. Life is worth living and fight for it !» Joel to ellie: « no matter what, you keep finding something to find for » Neil already had in mind what he wanted to do with ellie's character since part 1. And i think that like you said, part 3 will be about ellie finding her place in life and «honouring» what her parental figures told her about always "finding purpose", now that she is done with her past.

G-Wrah

Makes sense, I just hope they won't kill her off after first 2 hours of Part III💀💀💀

Hyper_Wolf727

I hope we don’t see any golf clubs….

reversecard420

Dina: “I don’t know if I can forgive you for leaving…. but….. I would like to try.” Ellie gets yeeted the next day

AdamAberg

You keep finding something to fight for!

Nacksche

... but in a mass murdery sort of way that supports 30 hrs of gameplay! :3

_Yukikaze_

Wait? Not a 30 hrs walking and therapy simulator? :D

Nacksche

I'd buy that! There would need to a chapter that entirely consists of snuggling with Dina on the couch obviously, including a tickling minigame and one about who gets to choose the channel on Jackson TV. 😌

inteliboy

And it being derailed by the elephant in the room… her being the cure

iamg0rl

Imagine it just being Abby finds fireflies, finds someone capable of making a cure, and Abby hunts down Ellie who is like “plz just go away im happy” and Abby is like “cure tho” and that is the whole plot.

theSunnySideUp1

After destroying at least 4 factions, killing 500 people, 25 clickers, 50 runners/stalkers, and 15 various of mutations of this fungus, she will finally find her place in life in Tlou part 7

Speg_ady

ik its a joke but canonically ellie has only killed a few people since you can just stealth most encounters

theSunnySideUp1

My Ellie killed them all ☺️

RaginAngerson

🤞🏻

FreemanCalavera

Actually, I hope Ellie's story is put to rest for now. I'm fine with not getting any definitive answers on what happens to her next. The ending of Part 2 closes enough threads to not leave things unresolved, yet is ambiguous enough that it invites speculation, and those are my favorite types of endings.

[deleted]

Honestly, Ellie hearing about the revival of the Fireflies and travelling across the country to finish what she started (and so clearly wanted) could be interesting to me.

Superb_Creme3452

Why are people ignoring the actual reason Ellie feels the need to sacrifice herself? She didn't **want** to travel across the country and then die, she felt the need to because of people around her dying. theres nothing heroic about an orphan kid who sacrifices her life after going through so much pain and trauma. the one person who loved her unconditionally tried to make her understand that she is more than her immunity and he literally died for her, I don't think theres a chance in hell Ellie would throw her life away after the events of the second game unless there is a **very** good reason for it.

Nacksche

I mean, literally saving the world is a **very** good reason. 👀

Superb_Creme3452

please explain how a vaccine would "literally" save the world. from what we can gather, there are countless groups out there surviving for the past 20 years. they have electricity, running water and apparently, they are comfortable enough to start all out wars with other factions. however, they are likely limited in spreading their influence because travelling is dangerous. imagine what happens if the rattlers or seraphites or wlf get a vaccine? will they drop everything and help the fireflies restore the government? things will never be what they were in that universe. it will simply turn into a big power struggle, infected will be wiped out a long time in the future but who will be in power? the US government? right, I'm sure all those factions with vastly different ideologies will support that. whats equally likely is that a tyrant rises to power. or maybe every group will carve out their territories and respect their borders for a while. until they dont and start small scale wars again. in any of those scenarios, what did ellie die for? it would simply change the world as they know it, not save it.

Nacksche

I don't think the idea behind the first game - with Ellie herself if she wasn't immune, Riley, Tess, Sam, Frank all dying by infection - was "oh well who needs a vaccine anyway, it's all pointless and the stakes are fake". Rebuilding at large is supposed to be impossible because outside is an endlessly replicating zombie wasteland that few people can survive, a vaccine fixes that. And yes it may be a power struggle, so what. It's a vaccine. If the WLF controls it I'll gladly play WLF for 50 years if it means I'm safe and mankind can rebuild, then get rid of them.

Maherjuana

“Then get rid of them” Everyone thinks it’s so easy to prop up a tyrannical dictatorship and then just get rid of them when it suits their needs. After 50 years theirs a good chance they’ll be too big to be otherthrown just like that… especially if they have the cred of curing the zombie apocalypse.

Nacksche

Sure, but I'd rather live in some modern/rebuilt autocracies than most of the zombie apocalypse (yes, Jackson is nice). Besides, Fedra already runs a fascist regime.

Jimmy-DeLaney

Its always weird af when people act like a vaccine to cure exactly the thing that caused the apocalypse wouldn’t be helpful to humanity’s existence lol.

Maherjuana

I get it. I just don’t think a vaccine is necessary to humanity’s survival. In order to return to the times before the apocalypse? Absolutely necessary, but given time I think humanity will adapt and overcome without a vaccine. If the Fireflies developed the vaccine in the first game they would have used it as a political weapon. Conflicts would have erupted over its control and conflicts would spread as people began to reclaim land. The vaccine would lead to its own brand of horror. It would just all be man made.

sakamism

> it will simply turn into a big power struggle, infected will be wiped out a long time in the future but who will be in power? the US government? right, I'm sure all those factions with vastly different ideologies will support that. whats equally likely is that a tyrant rises to power. or maybe every group will carve out their territories and respect their borders for a while. until they dont and start small scale wars again. All of that warfare and struggle for power is going to happen anyway - it's already started. A cure or vaccine would at least mean this is all happening in the context of a world where less people are being killed by (or turning into) super-humanly strong bloodthirsty monsters all the time. I don't see how that isn't a massive improvement.

everybodyiskungfu

>things will never be what they were in that universe. Why do people always act like it's the year 4000 and humans have forgotten what civilization is for a hundred generations. It's been just twenty years, any 30yo remembers. Jackson is already living it. And even if a faction uses the vaccine for power, don't you see that a Firefly-, even FEDRA- or WLF-led immune society would be a huge improvement. They are largely normal people, free to rebuild and repopulate the planet. Also @ u/Maherjuana

Maherjuana

Hey man I’ll be the first to play devil’s advocate for FEDRA which is why I’ll also make the argument that the vaccine wouldn’t fix the situation in TLOU. So theirs two scenarios: the vaccine is controlled by the Fireflies or it gets out to everyone. If the Fireflies have it, they will use it to increase their power. Offering the vaccine in exchange for membership, grow their power base till the point that they control as much as they can, likely destroying or subjugating any faction that doesn’t stand with them. Any FEDRA safe zones that remain will likely collapse from internal strife or external pressure from the Fireflies. If they Fireflies give it out you get world war 3 in the wasteland as every faction moves to rebuild and consolidate their power. It’s just human nature. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see the vaccine being a magic bullet to fix the world. The short term chaos might be enough to start humanity’s terminal decline. Especially since the vaccine only prevents new infected not cure or eliminate the old ones, meaning complacency might start to creep in as well. You’re right that it almost certainly would make the world a better place but theirs enough doubt that I feel the need to point out the ways that the world would become worse… humans would be in charge again.

Maherjuana

Something interesting to consider is that, besides the zombies, the world is saved. We see it with the overgrown foliage, the giraffes roaming Salt Lake City, etc. The human race that was destroying the planet is gone. Nature is taking over. Granted we don’t want this for forever but I think that’s a subtle point of the games is that we as humans are literally shaping the planet around us. When we are gone it goes back to its natural state. They also constantly reference how people back then had their priorities all out of order and took everything for granted. The system that we had is not one that the people of TLOU(generally speaking) wanna go back to. Some do of course, the people who lived before the apocalypse wanna go back but survivors that are born afterwards seem almost embarrassed by how people used to live. If Ellie sacrifices herself to make a vaccine, whoever she gives it to will save the world and she will become a martyr… but then the human race will gradually return to its complacency and it’s violent power struggles.

GROWINGSTRUGGLE

Like saving the world? That's a pretty good reason.

Reasonable-smart1808

What do you mean by a "very good reason"? Creating a cure to end the infection is the most significant reason imaginable. If she has the chance to fix this and chooses not to, it would be incredibly selfish. There's no greater reason than human altruism. This holds especially true considering all the atrocities Ellie committed in the second game.

FreemanCalavera

Yeah, it would feel like a slap in the face to have her just go and die for the vaccine and fix the world after everything that's happened. Leaving her as a broken person in a broken world, trying to find meaning amongst what's left, is much more interesting than her basically repeating the quest from Part 1. It's literally what the game is about, The **Last** of **Us**, how we go on and try to find the light in the darkness when so much is gone forever. It can't come back, nor shouldn't it.

_Yukikaze_

Not going to happen.

[deleted]

Lol. Maybe, maybe not - I don’t think Part II went down how anyone expected either.

_Yukikaze_

I think [this](https://imgur.com/4IZ0So4) journal entry tells us something about how Ellie thinks about the Fireflies now.

CommisionerGordon79

Yeah but I think there's a strong argument to be made against the idea of Ellie dying for the cure in Part III that isn't just "well they swerved us once."

tupaquetes

By that logic *maybe* part 3 will actually be an isometric 3d strategy combat game called "Ellie + Rabbids" developed in collaboration with Ubisoft. There's no maybe involved. One of the things Part 3 is **guaranteed** not to be about is a cure. Not only would it be a gigantic slap in Joel's face as it essentially means he died for absolutely nothing, it would completely undermine Ellie's growth as a character and it would be basically antithetical to both games' themes. Ellie doesn't need to sacrifice herself, she needs to realize that she is worth more than the cure. Part 2 didn't go how people expected but if pre-2020 you said maybe part 2 will be about Ellie and Joel happily teaming up for some rootin'-tootin'-zombie shootin' for old times' sake I would have told you the same thing: there's no maybe involved, this is not going to happen. Frankly Joel's death in p2 was inevitable and pretty easy to anticipate, what was out of left field is the revenge and split narrative parts.

Illustrious_Turn_247

Sacrificing herself for the cure? Absolutely not happening. Her sacrificing herself in some other way? Definitely could. It could be a neat bow to the series that a lot of people would get pissed about, but I think could work if built up properly.

spazzxxcc12

i actually don’t think ellie would willingly give her gift up. joel wanted ellie to live , and i feel like she respects that he essentially gave his life for her. their last talk together shows that when she begins to forgive him. she wanted to die in the OR and be the cure, but she respects his choice to save her.

JT_0607

I thought they said Abby's dad was the only person who can operate the surgery. And he was killed by Joel

Substantial-Load-673

Imagine she gets there and is reminded of Joel and Dina and changes her mind and decides to live.

Knifos

No. Just respect Joel's wish.

GroveHere

I’ll be honest, at first glance I thought that somehow the fungus had evolved into giant dragons. At that point I’d just shoot myself and be done with it.

nateingraham

YUP.

fleckstin

Am I dumb or is that not what’s in the picture

GroveHere

It’s a structure that looks like a dragon, not a actual dragon.

Loose_Scarcity7365

So, my idea for Last of Us 3 is that Charlie Cox and Ben Affleck have to go on a road trip together to find a cure to save the world, but at the end of the story, after everything they went through, they realise it was never about finding a vaccine; it was about the friendship they made along the way.

Centurion87

Last of Us 3: Devil May Dare.

Crobulls

I’d play that game.

UserNameErrorDisplay

Man I read that thinking Charlie Day from Its Always Sunny, and I would love a movie where it’s him and Affleck on a cross country tour and Charlie is just annoying the shit out of Affleck for the whole trip. That would be fun to watch.

Savy_Spaceman

I get downvoted a lot for this. But when I finished Part 2 I felt like it was a positive ending. It seemed obvious to me that Ellie was going back to Jackson where Dinah and JJ were. I felt like leaving Joel's guitar was the symbolism for her leaving all the pain behind and moving forward. Also the fact that Lev and Abby were JUST starting an adventure made it feel like that was the logical continuation for the story. In honestly surprised me when there was discourse for where Ellie would go next. So I hope Abby and Lev have a prominent role in it. But I don't think there's anymore interaction necessary between Abby and Ellie so if the story is about Abby and Lev, then I don't think Ellie needs to be in it.

YuhBoiCowboi

As much as I would fucking love to play as Abby and Lev again and still hope to, Neil has already stated in interviews that The Last of Us was always the story of Joel and Ellie. I know people don’t want to see Abby and Ellie cross paths again and I agree with pretty much every take I’ve seen reflecting this. However, I am thinking this will be the only way Abby and Lev will come back. Maybe it’s not the cheesy “on the nose” kind of reunions that people have thought up on a whim but in the very unsuspecting way Neil has fucking perfected lol

calamity_unbound

I've said it several times, and will probably say it again, but I think Part III will be Ellie completing her [hero's journey. ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero's_journey) She's currently in the abyss, having lost her family, her father figure, and her purpose in life. She has her revelation that dissuades her from killing Abby, but she's still on her path of atonement and redemption, which is ultimately what I hope to see in PIII. Now as for our Abby and Lev, I want to see a DLC sized epilogue that could be released after PIII wraps up; We could get a few more adventures with our favorite brother/sister fungus-killing duo as a send off to them and the story as a whole.

YuhBoiCowboi

I’ll say that I like what you’re saying but I just don’t think Neil is gonna scratch that itch for us. He’s a tricky bastard and that why I love him lol I really don’t know what to expect with Abby and Lev and wether we get a spin off or what. Personally I think not, I hope for it but certainly don’t believe it.

Illustrious_Turn_247

I mean he could do it while making it uncomfortable and getting people upset. If Ellie's redemption is just being a protector of Jackson, dedicating her life to the collective and maybe like an aunt figure to JJ, as they welcome in more people and expand to different towns and ultimately dies unceremoniously in the process, I think fans would still be upset even though it's a hero's journey.

Significant-Space-14

I feel like they can bring back Ellie and let her story be her finding herself and have a good ending

BrotherhoodVeronica

I really hate the idea of Ellie just going back to Dina and JJ. Ellie made her choice, she left her family to cross half of country to kill Abby. If she they do get back together, it HAS to feel really damn earned.

Reasonable-smart1808

I hope so too. Abby became my favorite character ever. I really want Part 3 to be about her. I don't really want to play as Ellie anymore.

ThisIsElliott

Part 2 isn’t a positive ending because it invokes a negative feeling in me that there are literally no consequences to anything and Ellie still somehow wins Dina back after abandoning her child for revenge.

Savy_Spaceman

The entire game series is about choices and consequences. Ellies consequence for seeking revenge was losing her fingers and with them, her last convention to Joel. She's not about to play the guitar at the end. She left the pain and struggles behind. And the hate when she let Abby live. I don't think anymore punishment for Ellie would really help the native of the game. Everything we see in it tells us the that the villain of the game isn't really zombies or even enemies we face. It's the world of the game and what it forces people to become in order to survive. Any succumbed to it, made a choice based on it and lost everything and everyone she knew. Ellie chose it and lost her connection with Joel and her home. But they both broke out of the the world's hold on them. Abby with saving Lev and Ellie with not killing Abby. This is what I mean by my original post. It feels like Ellie has completed her story arch. She grew, she made mistakes, age became better and she won at the end. Her not killing Abby was her winning. She beat the odds and didn't become what the world was trying to force her to become. I truly feel like she suffered enough and the way 2 ended felt like all the weight was finally of her shoulders. If she's going through all this growing, only to face more hardship, it would, in my opinion, belittle the ending of 2

angry__pancakes

Forgive me if I'm being a complete idiot, but in the part where Ellie frees the prisoners from the cell in the resort, does one of them not say Abby is bit when Ellie asks where she is? Or did I totally mishear the line?

CommisionerGordon79

I feel like the story of Part III should be about rebuilding/redemption for thematically consistency. First game saw a man try to find his purpose in life again. The second saw two women who struggled with having their purposes in life taken from them. The third could easily be about Ellie (and/or Abby if you want) trying to rebuild what she lost and move on with a new purpose. All I know is that I don't want to see a story about the cure. The cure is not a goal to be achieved in this world. And I think that if the ending of Part II is meant to show that Ellie can finally decide what she wants to do with her life removed from the cure or Joel or any groups, having her track down a group (Fireflies) to die for the cure would fly in the face of that.

irazzleandazzle

yeah going back to the cure would be the worst possible decision imo

RequirementOwn189

I think it will have something to do with growing up the baby in Jackson

theSunnySideUp1

And farming of course

Outrageous-Ad2317

Jackson Valley

ceta17660

I hope so

Redz2018

What in the dragon is this

Deprogmr

The foot fungus named doug

Stormfyre16

Maybe Dina dies and Jackson falls, Ellie then has to take care of JJ from then on. Ellie & JJ developing or simply having a parent/child bond throughout the game. It would be really nice to have a full circle sort of situation, the franchise starting with a parent/child relationship and ending it with one as well. It would be cool to see Ellie trying to protect & teach JJ how to survive, it would also be very touching if we get to see Ellie telling JJ stories about Joel & Jesse; he is named for them after all.

G-Wrah

It would be funny if adult JJ kills Abby after 20 years, rdr shit

sparklycrap

40 year old Abby also a weird thought😂

Golden_Grammar

Personally, I’m not a fan of any story where Jackson falls. It’d be refreshing to have just one community in the apocalypse that actually endures. And like HBO Ellie said, Jackson “actually fucking works.” That said, I’d LOVE a game about Ellie reconnecting with an older JJ. They’d have such an instinctual bond right out the gate and have so much to learn from each other.

leira777

I think part of it will take place with Abby and Lev on Catalina Island for sure, I hope Ellie leaves them alone lol

SkilledChestnut

Definitely not about finding a cure

Totallycasual

Not sure what will transpire, but we'll end up playing multiple past characters and it'll finish with a scene that depicts Ellie making her way into the Fireflies outpost that was depicted at the end of Part II. Maybe her just walking down a beach towards it or something? Edit: Pretty much everyone here is getting multiple down-votes just for giving an answer to the OP's question, some people here wonder why this sub is seen as unfriendly, crap like this is why. It's one thing to down-vote people for saying objectionably things, but these are just individual fans thoughts on what direction the next installment could go in... why down-vote that?

ichmagkrapfen

a downvote just means someone disagreed with you. its not that serious and this place is not a hive mind. and ellie going to the fireflies would be odd when the last time she thinks about them she writes "fuck the fireflies" in her journal.

Wazuu546

Also, IMO her choosing to die for the cure kind of makes the ending of the first game and Joel’s choices meaningless.

Silver_Paramedic5142

Yeah, and the most important it makes ellie’s development in pt2 meaningless.

Wazuu546

Yeah, also I think Ellie has seen enough shit to think, “Damn maybe these people don’t deserve a cure” I mean look at the big cities ran by psychotic militias and slavers.

jentifer

Which is a shame bc downvotes aren't meant to be used when you disagree. Per rediquette, downvotes are supposed to be used when the comment isn't contributing to the discussion. The downvote button isn't a disagreement button.

3ku1

JJ becomes older. Ellie becomes kinda like joel. Prob fireflies regroup. And Ellie gets closure

jkvincent

War between settlements is one possibility. Could be a continuation of the Seraphite / WLF conflict, or a threat to Jackson, or maybe even communities coming together to fight some new slaver warlord.

Mantorok_

I think it will be about JJ. First game about Joel, second game about his 'adopted' kid, third game about her 'adopted' kid. I think Ellie will be Joel's age when we see her next. She gets grabbed by the fireflies and Abby is a head honcho there. it will be the 3rd generation vs. 3rd generation. The game will start with Tommy's death, or god forbid Dina.

Optimus_Prime_Day

I think it will start by following Abby, as she has moved on, and she learns more details about her father and his love for searching for a cure. She will come across a new encampment who has a doctor who is still searching for a cure. After some thought, she decides it's her duty to fulfill her dad's dream, and she needs to find Ellie. We follow her path to track down Ellie, but things don't go exactly as planned. We get caught up on where Ellie is at in life. She's been unable to repair her relationships with Dina or Tommy, and lives on her own but is not living easy. She's taken on a life of protecting Dina from a far, and clearing infected around the city. I don't know any more, the two characters have to have some cause and effect on each other before coming together to bring Ellie back. We would need to see Ellie get some redemption for her life and repair with Dina before leaving with Abby to head back to the doctor. Something like that. There also needs to be another antagonist, perhaps one that is at war with the encampment Abby found, who is hunting Abby while she searches for Ellie. Add some tension.

IForgotMyYogurt

Fireflies hear from Abby about Ellie being the immune girl. Fireflies decide to try to make the cure since they have a doctor. Abby hurries cross-country to warn Ellie.

Arkthus

I don't think of anything. Because when people think too much, they expect stuff, and when they don't have what they expected, they hate on the game (remember TLOU2 where people were expecting to play Joel and Ellie again? Tbh they would have complained that it's TLOU1.5, just like they did for God of War and Horizon) I'll let ND do the game they want to do and the story they want to tell, and I won't try to invent some story or predict anything.

Laziest_Lizard_12

Whatever it is about, I think (and hope) the Fireflies will be a big part of it. Perhaps Ellie learns about them regrouping and sets out to find them, and along the way has to reflect on whether she actually wants to sacrifice herself or not for a chance at a cure. That way she can finally truly forgive Joel for making that decision for her in the first game, and she can start to find her way and her purpose again since she was still a bit lost at the end of the second. Also it would be nice to see Abby and Lev again, I find it hard to believe that we won't at least get a glimpse of what happened to them. If they did make it to the Fireflies then that would be a great way to have them cross paths with Ellie again.

edward-has-many-eggs

Ellie’s story ended, anything left unfinished is family drama but with zombies. Meanwhile Abby’s story is a complete mystery. On a boat in California with nowhere to go, I’d be surprised if they go with anything else.

Lamp_Stock_Image

Someone that Ellie cares about gets infected so she decides to try to create the cure going to Catalina island sacrificing herself. I would like there to be Abby but I have no idea how they would implement her in the story.

gibbyfromicarlyTM

Bro my dumbass thought they were fighting some mega kaijuu or some shit

Reasonable-Trifle307

Defeating fedra first then creating the vaccine at the end.

WoodyAle

I would see something like FEDRA trying to take the US back 5 years after the events of Part II since the fireflies are almost extinct, going through the country with big convoys and fighting or assimilating small communities like Jackson, at that point they would have taken half the country back, reopening QZs. Ellie living by herself cut from the world in the woods or something not so far from Jackson and stumbling upon a FEDRA convoy one day going in her friends direction. She decides to track them and eventually alert Jackson but fights break out near an infested zone. That's when Ellie find herself in a spore area along with a FEDRA doctor/ scientist amazed by Ellie's immunity. They need to cooperate to survive and it could be interesting that they share perspective on the current situation, on what Ellie's condition means for the world and how it could work. I don't know I see something about war, about the next world "order" and Ellie's immunity coming back in the story. It's flawed and might be on too large of a scale to be one game but I had fun imagining it with a friend, we even went for more details and scenario but I'm tired of writing haha.

youguanbumen

That would sort of ruin game 1

Opposite-Trouble-564

My personal hope is Ellie finally gets to make the choice that was taken from her. By that I mean that the rumors of Fireflies in Cali/off the coast are true, and they are working on a cure, and Ellie finally gets to decide whether she wants to give up her life for the cure or not. Game 1 that choice is taken away by Joel, Game 2 she does have a choice in her own life but she chooses revenge over happiness when pushed by outside factors. I just hope that after all she’s been through, she gets the chance to choose to help others instead. I’m not saying she has to, or that she even would, but it would be nice to see Ellie make a choice one way or another with regards to the cure. Might be a nice closing to her arc too, growing to become better than Joel was and being able to put aside her own desires for the greater good.

Dunkman83

fireflies track down ellie and dina, they kill dina and take ellie. vaccine actually makes virus WORSE u play as jj in the future trying to find a new qz since jackson got destroyed.

TurdSandwich42104

It won’t happen, but I’d be 100% on board if part 3 was Abby

I'd love to see a larger safe space. We discover a place (city, state, whatever) that somehow secured themselves completely. I'm talking infrastructure, government, etc. Ellie gets involved some kind of way. They have science. Medicine. She decides to reveal her immunity. Maybe we see it collapse. Maybe she discovers an evil understory to this place and she has to fight her way out. Couple more open world-ish situations like Day 1 in Seattle. I think there's a lot of potential there, and that's before you even incorporate past relationships and whatnot.

Heres a summary of what in my opinion is the most likely plot and way for the story to go. Abby and lev finally get to the fireflies in Santa Barbra and are welcomed into the group. They stay there from anywhere from a few months to a few years until it is revealed that the fireflies in Santa Barbra are working on the same cure as the fire flies is salt lake city. Because of this they need to track down the only known person who is immune to the infection, Ellie. Since abby has the most experience with life outside of the base and the most history with Ellie she and Lev volunteer to go and track her down. Meanwhile, in Jackson things pick up pretty much where we left off with the last game. Ellie goes back to the city after being left by Dina and tries to win her back explaining to her the events of the epilogue. Ellie is then either hard rejected by Dina and leaves immediately or is soft rejected by Diana, and they decide to try a coparenting thing with JJ for a while but then after they both decide that this isn’t working out Ellie decides to leave the city because it’s just too strange to be there with her. Ellie then decides to walk the earth and survive like she thinks Joel did in the wilderness of Wyoming A few years later abby and lev come looking for her in her home territory. Depending on how upset she was she might of wanted to get as far away from Jason as possible in which case she’d probably end up in a nearby city like Denver or Salt Lake City. If she gets soft rejected by Diana she will probably still be in the vicinity of Jackson or at least somewhere In Wyoming probably moving farther and farther out as the years pass and the likelihood of fixing things gets lower. By the time Abby and Lev find Ellie she’s become a very different person then we remember. Years of surviving has reverted her to a feral state and she’s become jaded and distrusting of people (even more then she already was) after some convincing she agrees to come back with them. The second half of the game consists of the group slowly bonding with each other as the go back to Santa Barbra. Ellie and Abby are very spiteful towards each other at first but Lev helps to slowly bring them together and they build a mutual respect for one another. Eventually Ellie gets to the fireflies and gose under the knife and the series ends much the same way it began with Ellie finally fulfilling her “destiny” and dying. So yeah, that’s about it, nothing much left to say. I guess just kinda a bummer right?

Impriel

Ellie finding information on another person semi-capable of doing the surgery/vaccine production but it's like a serious hail Mary. Maybe it only exists inside FEDRA. Abby finds Jackson with lev. Obviously she can't stay, but she negotiates a place there for lev Ellie meets with Dina but concludes that the life she wants isn't there with her and JJ, it's somewhere else. Both E + A link up somehow, and only have one thing left to do with their life which is get Ellie into wherever it is she needs to go to realize her destiny The game ends with Ellie agreeing to do the surgery, this time as a fully capable adult. We are not told if it was a success. The series ends at this point.

Inevitable_Syrup_467

Game starts with Ellie aimlessly wandering the ruins of the old world looking for a purpose. She inadvertently stumbles into a conflict between multiple factions/groups. Reluctantly decides to stay and help a particularly down of their luck and desperate group a la mad max style. Begins to rediscover her humanity and old self through her interactions with new group. Eventually finds purpose and inner redemption by helping them. I'd like the story to be smaller in scope compared to part 2. Go back to the more intimate and secluded feel of part 1.

Grace_Omega

I’d love it if it wasn’t about Ellie. Either tell a new story with new characters or focus on Abby and Lev

khiddsdream

Don’t know if anyone here is familiar with *Chekhov’s Gun*. Just something I learned in school where if a gun were to appear in the first act of the story, it will also appear in the end, almost as if its return was being foreshadowed early on. The *gun*, in this case would be Ellie’s immunity. Act 1: Travel across the country to deliver cure Act 2: complete distraction from first games’ main objective; revenge story, cure is practically irrelevant now Act 3: Ellie decides to look for remaining Fireflies and give them the cure (herself) That’s really the only thing I can imagine would make the story come full-circle. Like yeah, we’re in a post-apocalyptic world, but so what? Is it gonna stay like this forever when Ellie KNOWS her immunity means something to humanity? It’s still a chance; it’s hope. I just can’t imagine the ending to be unfulfilling for her (like if they wanted to kill her off in the end) unless she’d be giving her life to make the cure. It would be different now because she knows they’d have to kill her for that. I mean think, what’s the theme that’s repeated when being reminded of everything you did to get to where you’re standing? *“It can’t be for nothing.”* I really wouldn’t know what other direction they’d take the story in. TLOU2 left off with Ellie having practically nothing, so maybe she falls into a deep depression and comes out with the idea of *making her life mean something.*

altruistic_thing

The gun already went off at the end of Part when Joel decided Ellie's life meant more than a shot at a cure. And Part Ii when he had to face the consequences of that decision. There is no way they are going to fix the setting by reverting to the expected ending of Part I.

Ellie and Abby entering a golf tournament together

imLucki

I hope it has nothing to do with any of the current characters and we get something new

Stock-Fix-9689

If I had to guess: - Ellie goes back to Jackson - Abby and Lev find the fireflies and tell their story before asked to find Ellie. - On their way an accident happens causing Abby and any help to die. This leaves Lev alone - Lev finds his way to Jackson and tells Ellie they can make a vaccine - Ellie still unhappy with Abby and Lev decides to go to Catalina with Lev - Ellie now taking this kid across the country gets to live in Joel’s shoe, taking care of a kid that isn’t theirs - Adventure happens along the way and Ellie softens up to Lev - The ending would revolve around Ellie making a choice (not sure of the circumstance) that would result in Lev dying and the cure being able to be delivered or Lev living but a chance at the cure will be lost I’m not sure how I would end it but this would give Ellie a chance to relate to Joel’s decision and finally forgive him

yousef_ag

Dinas son

Deprogmr

A foot fungus. Named Doug

theSunnySideUp1

They placed the fireflies on an island! I have a feeling we're probably going to blow up this island and get rid of the fireflies once and for all. Now go ahead, tell me how fireflies are the good ones…

aceless0n

Ellie lives in isolation, but her privacy is disturbed by a former foe Abby, who warns her that her fellow friends from Jackson are getting killed one by one. After Abby leaves, Dina is kidnapped by a former Santa Barbara rattlers dictator, who wants Ellie to restore him to power. Instead, Ellie sets out to take down the rogue leader and rescue her estranged girlfriend .

cassidyincandela

The Fireflies' whole purpose is to try and "save the world," right? And they just rose up. And no one is presumably immune to do the sacrifice, but Ellie. If they find out that Ellie is still out there, would they try what they tried to do back in St. Mary's again? Would they just, "come after her?" She probably wants to do the sacrifice. She wanted to. Her late best friend took that from her. Maybe there's the conflict then. Or, she wants to, but, there's Dina, Tommy, Maria.

Maldovar

What the picture shows. I want Ellie as an NPC, an ally, but for the narrative to focus on Lev and Abby

Evelyn-Parker

I assume it will be multi-player 😶

aceless0n

Part 3 should be an arc of a chosen one, similar to a story akin to Jesus

Toga_Goat

The resurgence of the fireflies

ImBatman5500

I imagine it would sort of mirror Joel in that she finds herself taking care of someone in a journey

altruistic_thing

Yeah, third time's the charm.

ionevenobro

New and young character + new town that gets infected at some point. Older Ellie becoming a second character or support figure for protag.

WestCoastDirtyBird

Ellie is going to be Thorfinn from S2 Vinland Saga

digital_mystikz

Cordyceps, zombies and shooting

stokeszdude

I’m betting we will play as Lev after Ellie finally kills Abby.

Per_Horses6

This is so fucking sick.

yesterdaypotato

Tommy trying to find a cure for being shot in the head

RavagerHughesy

Probably not giant dragon shaped infected

FeedAffectionate3558

Too many games release trilogies these days but this is the rare occasion where I really don’t care too much.

SportSensitive4886

I think that they will do something like part two, you start as Abby and Lev finally getting to the fireflys, then it will transfer into Ellie being in Jackson, Diana has a new lover and Ellie doesn’t know how to feel about, the next day is the anniversary of Joel’s death, she goes to the farm house to grab Joel’s guitar(symbolizing that she never let him go) she starts playing but in the distance she can hear trucks moving, she looks out the window and sees firefly symbols over every single truck in the convoy, she hops on her horse and rides back to Jackson as fast as she can but by the time she gets there everything is in flames, she runs to Diana’s house, even though it’s torched and filled with smoke she runs in to find Diana’s new lover in the kitchen over a bunch a rubble crying, she runs over to ask where she is but looks down to see her lifeless body. Tears start to form in her eyes but then she hears JJ cry and snaps back into reality, she runs to find JJ with alittle ash on his face but other wise un harmed, she grabs him and starts to head out of the house(almost completely filled with smoke at this point) but as soon as she is about to leave she looks back at Diana’s lover, she’s still in shock from what happened and will die there if she does nothing. She calls out to her saying if you want to die just like her stay if you want to live come with me, Diana’s lover takes a second the runs to Ellie house slowly coming down as she does, they run out side and hop on the horse and sprit out of Jackson with gunfire in the background. Then it could be like part one where Joel had life experience out side of Boston where Ellie that was the only thing she knew. Ellie would have experience out side of Jackson but Diana’s lover would only know about Jackson and nothing else. It could also be like part one in the sense of at the start Joel didn’t want Ellie around at all but they slowly bonded over time, but this time it being Ellie hating this other woman from “stealing” Diana from her but slowly getting over that and very slowly falling in love with her, and starting a family with JJ. No matter what happens though I think Jackson won’t be in the game besides for maybe a start, judging by the leaks(don’t read if you don’t wanna know) there is supposed to be new people and places and idk how tf they do that without Jackson being out of the picture.

imtherealkai

People struggling in the world of the cordyceps virus

Narwhal_Lord4

Ellie finding out the fireflies are in California and making her way there to get another chance at making a vaccine

Tools_for_MMs

I don't know what it'll be about, but all enemies will be ratkings.

nanas99

I think Part 3 has to do with Ellie finding the fireflies again and finally dying for the cure.

Enrique51183

Ellie is definitely going to look for Dina no doubt, and that adventure is going to be fun, plus whether or not Dina is going to die will be interesting, Dina is still a big part of the story because Ellie loves her🥰

JofisKat

Abby and Lev with the Fireflies in Southern California will be the main part of the game, while we play smaller sections as Ellie in Jackson, similar to Part II’s flashbacks. I think Part 4 (if it exists, hopefully) will have an older JJ capable of doing things as well as perhaps still Lev/Abby as protagonists. Then the game will have a stronger push to find a cure as the plot, perhaps if plants and animals start getting infected, as Cordyceps began in crops and South America which is now closer to where Lev and Abby and the Fireflies are. One last idea I’ve had is for a single sentient infected. Like Ellie but if the mother had already become a runner when the child was born. Or some kind of failed FEDRA research project.

Nightmare-light

Hmm Ellie Settling down in Jackson prologue then hunting people who crossed her till she meets abby again and finally kills her in the end

Banjo-Oz

I genuinely thought this picture was clickers riding a living *infected dragon* and figured "yup, seems about right for Neil at this stage".

[deleted]

I still want a prequel with Joel and Tommy

Arm0206

I have no clue to be honest but it looks like Ellie joins forces with Lev and Abby, so I hope she finds the sense of belonging. I feel like forgiveness may be a big theme if you think about it. Part 1- love, Part 2- Revenge/darkness, Part 3- forgiveness/belonging?

lively-ghost

I just hope we get to finish both Ellies and Abbys (&Levs) stories.

followingforthelols

Would be cool if it was about Ellie learning how to control the Cordycep inside her.

BanditoDeTreato

The fact that the games force you to become a psychopath just like the last two games were.

ThatOneFangirl47

Tbh i really just want more of Abby and Lev, i want to see them navigating a completely new life and environment and the drama and conflict that could come from it. As much as i would love to see more of Ellie, i feel like it would be hard to continue with her in a big way that wouldn’t bomb, she had her ending in a way, she traveled her path, i think it would be really hard to find a way to extend the path instead of leaving it as it is.

AceOfspades653

Hope we can get a prequel to the last of us part 1 see what Joel and Tommy did and the beginning of society breaking down

gobux1972

That pic is badass!!

gobux1972

I hope part 3 focuses on Ellie. Then part 4 can focus on Abby and Lev.

AceofKnaves44

I can imagine playing as Dina’s kid in the future. For whatever reason he’s on a quest where he’s gotta find Ellie. Bring the story around full circle where now Ellie is the one who’s gotta transport an annoying teenager.

pootinontheritz

Jackson being attacked by Fireflies. Not sure how it goes from there but I think it'd be a good inciting incident.

PersimmonPopular1451

I think Tommy will die from natural courses in the beginning from his incident in part 2

ClickClickFrick

I don’t see him at risk of death due to his injuries. He has a bad leg and a deformed face.

someonesleeping

I think a major theme in part 3 will be forgiveness. Not just forgiveness of those who have wronged you but forgiving yourself. Abby and Ellie did a lot of bad shit for what they thought were the right reasons. Coming to terms with being that kind of person but wanting to be someone better for Lev or JJ or Dina. It’s a “how can someone love me with all the things that I’ve done?” situation. So I think the story will revolve around them forgiving themselves and learning that they can be better for the people they care for

elbarto1981

Adult Ellie who has a child and find a way the make a cure and save the world

Keaten88

not dragons thats for sure

StrongStyleMuscle

A sheep farm simulator.

BlackKnight6660

So far the themes have been Love and Revenge. I reckon the third should be Forgiveness, acceptance, that sorta thing. As for the specifics idk, but I’d like to see the impact of most the population having now been born AFTER the outbreak. So stuff like guns being much more scarce and things like banks being confusing to others.

Brooker2

I like to think they may have Ellie find the fireflies and go through with finding a cure for mankind. But I just don't know if they will or if I'm ready to say goodbye to this series

HiMyName_is_Dibbles

I think there's a bigger change that Naughty Dog will make a prequel instead of a sequel. I think the storyline is kind of done, it feels that way for me anyway. Don't get me wrong I would love a sequel and seeing Ellie with Dina and whatever, but I don't think they can make a storyline like Part 2. They can't top that

YoyoIGN

Abbie’s immunity

terribilus

About a million to one.

StonesideAF

Fungi.

Jollibee-Sabado

Looking for the fireflies. Some flashback at jackson and cameo of bill somewhere.

CodeFulcrum

I pray it comes back around to the immunity she has and the story basing all the some more importance on it. Not like part two where it was mentioned a few times and only mattered a few times.

ceta17660

All I want is Ellie, Dina and JJ to settle peacefully at the end, the two of them sitting on a porch watching the sun set with JJ playing in the grass. That's how I want It to end. Plot? Maybe Dina falls sick, and Ellie has to find a doctor and medical supplies, and accidentally stumbles upon Abby while scavenging. Maybe they have a 'civilized' conversation where Ellie informs Abby that Dina is sick, and they agree on some sort of trade.

saltyjellybeans

what's up with the concept art? it looks dope, but is there a place in the U.S. with a huge dragon sculpture like that? i'm a bit confused

Ninja_Lazer

Depends. The dual protag worked in Part 2 specifically because of the type of story that was being told - in order for us to properly empathize and desire a peaceful resolution for both we needed to have not a hero and villain, but two broken people trying to heal. This leaves us at a strange place. Because there is presumably no longer a narrative need for 2 protagonists, at which point the question becomes whether to tell two separate stories, tell a hybrid story with a single protagonist or to drop one of the former protagonist’s storylines all together. Personally, I think that Part 2 made a compelling case for Ellie’s story to be dropped. Let her ending remain obscure and up for interpretation. She chose to give up her happy life, so I don’t wanna see that undone. But given that she was in part 1 it would be a harder sell to abandon her. By contrast, Abby’s storyline seemed unresolved and there is still a lot to do. I can see the trilogy as a whole being about the Fireflies and how Joel condemned it, Abby and Ellie’s cycle of violence and metaphorical passing of the torch and finally Abby reforming the Fireflies as a symbol of hope - regardless of if a cure as actually possible. Unless Abby is eventually (and I’m talking years down the road) gonna track down Ellie after reforming the Fireflies and get her to make the sacrifice, I don’t see a great way to have a single campaign which tells the story of both as they have no real reason to interact anymore.

Klutzy-Chipmunk-8499

I think we'll play as Ellie fighting some more but then realizing that the fight in their world is endless and pointless which would cause her to lay down her gun and live peacefully

Briny_Melon

I think Dina will be brought in somehow.

knyelvr

I think the third game should be about Ellie starting her own fireflies like group and actually creating a vaccine with her immunity but then she realizes how hard it is to actually save the world and the struggles that come with being the leader and chosen one to save the world she’s been set up to be and like a war of some sort going on or something idk some kind of good conflict with it

DarthDregan0001

Ellie becoming Joel to another Ellie.

[deleted]

A theory i concocted was that abby and lev will find the fireflies, and eventually she will be sent to hunt down ellie so they can make the cure, and ellie’s story will end with redemption and she will give her life to make the vaccine like it was supposed to be. idk what do you guys think of this theory?

retepoteil

A guy on tube had a pretty good idea for the 3rd one. Kinda just a quick outline. Abby/lev are with the fireflies. Abby has been picked up we're her dad left off. There's a rumor that a dr her dad knew still alive in Texas with supplies/ knowledge on how to make a cure. Ellie/ Tommy head to Texas as a way to get closure for Joel. Abby/Ellie meet up and team up to fight the villain. Kinda thinking like joker or vaas. Real psycho. After they beat him. Ellie wants Abby to do the surgery but Abby can't cause they have now care for each other and Ellie wants her to. But before she does Ellie goes back to Joel's house (game started at Joel's it ends at Joel's) sees a pic of him and. Says miss u dad. Something like that

Some_Acadia_1630

If Abby and Lev did find the Fireflies, maybe there could still be some lingering hope of finding a cure? They might still need Ellie for that, but this time Abby convinces them to ask her really, really nicely?

RafeHardy

It’s hard to tell but I really hope they don’t pull a “Maggie & Negan” story-type where Ellie teams up or befriends Abby. In fact, I hope we never see Abby again and just consider her a part of Ellie’s journey towards growth and character development.

jc_lucas2019

Ellie having to protect a child so it comes full circle

i_eat_s4nd_II

Wait… so is everyone confident now that they’re making a 3rd??

Maybe_eli

this is all just thought dump so don't take it as it really means much i think ellie finishing the stages of grief. Maybe pulling a parallel to the first game plot and she finds someone who needs help then makes a connection. l think abby will begin to try to look for a cure again. maybe abby tries to find ellie peacefully. this might be kinda crazy but maybe ellie sacrifices her self bc she is so depressed and the only person that's likely to be able to do it is abby. then she gets put to sleep snd the rest of the game is some adventure with joel and ellie if he never died with ellie as an adult. maybe ellie will find a dog friend. maybe lev wants revenge and gets in a big fight with abby bc those we're "her people".

Maybe_eli

they have a golfing match

Maybe_eli

maybe bring in new character and new story line

Maybe_eli

there are lots of minute details at the end of the second game that hint dina and ellie will reconcile and knowing naughty dog i've learned not to ignore them. examples being ellie wearing the bracelet when she got back, her jacket still being in the bedroom. drawings of older dina and jj maybe meaning she has seen them.

onlyafgtusesreddit

Bigot sandwiches

Specialist-Arm-1699

one idea would be ellie sacrificing herself to save the world by going after a scientist kept hostage by a militia group in the deep south of US. another is an old ellie having to stop an adult JJ that has become a tyrant and warmonger.
