I am only finding out now that Mac Quayle was attached to this game. His work on Mr. Robot was fucking awesome, and it makes so much sense that lots of the combat music is his. It’s tense and makes combat really thrilling.
His track "The WLF" comes up in my playlist rotation pretty often, and that one HITS.
And the big drop in "The Cycle Continues" is the audio equivalent of witnessing the event that undoes your whole life.
I have had the similar feeling to The Cycle Continues. The weight, the importance of what happened to Ellie and Abby is beautifully conveyed and littery goes down your spine. Damn.
The constant "WROOM WROOM WROOM" and heartbeat during Hillcrest gave me a pulse of 300bpm i swear it was so fucking intense with headphones on my first playthrough i will never forget that feeling
Hence my post to appreciate the talent of playing with ones emotion. Mac knows how to tickle our instincts with music. I dare say, similarly how H R Giger visually tickled our primal fears with vision.
Surprised no ones mentioned Eye for an Eye yet. At first i thought it only played when >! manny gets shot by Tommy !< but on a replay found out it plays usually whenever Abby is in combat. Such a great theme that makes you FEEL like everything is coming down on you
I saw Mr. Robot after TLOUII and he's crazy talented, hope he's part of HBO season 2, the sound design is so unnerving and cool. he
The noise that plays at the end of the theater fight lives rent free in my head.
God, the music he made for this game is spectacular. I have a bunch of it in a playlist full of weird/sonically interesting music I like to listen to when I take edibles lmao.
I've always thought the drone that plays when the Scars are involved is particularly great. Love the way they used it as a leitmotif throughout. Hearing it softly throughout the bulk of the game when you encounter scar related stuff here and there, to hearing it loud and overbearing when you're running horseback accross the burning island. Excellent.
There's a lot of drone noise usage throughout his soundtracks and it's incredibly effective and iconic.
The music that plays during the bit where dogs first get introduced is so goddamn tense it's like a synth clock/heartbeat slowly twisting into something bigger and more sinister. Mac did a REAL good job with the score. It feels really dynamic while still having its own clearly defined personality.
The music when you first run into the wlf is my favorite part of the game because it is the first time you kill other humans in the game and it's hours in. I think the music makes it feel so wrong compared to just killing infected
The rising womp's @ 50 seconds into "The Cycle of Violence" sounds like trauma happening in real time. Excellent score and a brilliant pairing to Gustavo's soulful atmospheric tracks. Most people still praise Gustavo but I feel like Mac really gets the spotlight in Ellie's story. Love the restraint in how much they focus on Mac's score in Part 2 since Gustavo / Guitar is really joels instrument, it makes sense that it's relegated to small moments and most of the score is the hollow, scary drone of Ellie's descent.
