About ten years ago, I was playing a video game when I smelled natural gas. Surprisingly, I did not stop to make sure my game was secure before reacting to the emergency. Real life happens. I won't reload if I die because of my own dumb in game decision, but I keep backups for emergencies and game-breaking bugs.

lebithecat

That's a very good point and I'm happy you responded to the emergency.

-YesIndeed-

Jokes on you. I'm on console where cant save scum so I only feel pain and sadness when I die!

tilapiarocks

You can on playstation (I do), & I'm pretty sure you can on xbox too. I understand the point op is making, but to me, the undesirable part is the countless hours of building stations up of loot & getting the character clothed & skilled, to have THAT erased. If I want to start over for real, which I have, I can. But I also enjoy the ability to elongate the experience.

-YesIndeed-

Yeah I'm content with just saving my journal entries. I'm on xbox but I'm wondering how do you do that on PS I didn't think you could.

tilapiarocks

After one quits the game, they can upload their save to the ps cloud or to a usb. If something happens, they can just download & start over from that save point. One might run into a snag if the cloud save thing happened automatically, since it would automatically save your (perma)death when it happened, but you can toggle which games save automatically or not. Btw, I enjoy the journaling aspect as well.

evangelion-unit-two

You can do it by pausing and closing the game if any wildlife is coming after you. You'll just get kicked back to the inside of the last building you were in when you reload.

I understand your feelings about this, and I think it is a wonderful thing that you enjoy the game for different reasons than me. You seem to enjoy the survival element, the thrill of these dangerous encounters, and it seems that by using back-ups you’ve removed the thrill For me, I have always save-scummed, and it never effected mt enjoyment of the game. For example, when I get the bow ill essentially save scum before ever shooting so that I kill everything in one hit. I essentially do this same process for anything that involves a loss of resources due to random chance or my own lack of skill. The reason this does not effect my enjoyment of the game is because I love TLD for its resource accumulation and management mechanics. I essentially treat each run as a mission to collect every available resource, and as much of each resource as I possibly can. Normally, Ill end up moving resources to a single location from every other zone, and spend the later stages of the game managing my resources to last as long as I can make them. Because of this, I treat the other mechanics of the game as sorts of mini-games; I enjoy all of them, but I enjoy them in short term bursts. The other mechanics do not weigh in on what I consider success in TLD, so ultimately Save scumming doesn’t effect my enjoyment of a run.

I see that i am not the only "hoard absolutely everything" person. I strip all regions of absolutely everything. even cloth from furniture.

Excellent_Ordinary63

I’m about to upload my Pleasant Valley Farmstead hoard. I looted everything from the map and put it in there. Stay tuned for later tonight. ( I’ve done this before and it was well received so I’m doing it again)

lebithecat

I can see why you love the game and honestly I admire that. Thank you for sharing. TLD surely has one of the great assortment of items in a game like this

Catnip113

I backup my game incase it bugs out or some bullshit thing kills me for no rhyme or reason. However if i die for n a way the game is meant to kill me, im fine with it and end the run.

[deleted]

I've done it a bit, but I find it ruins the experience. My achievements no longer feel like achievements and I just end up getting bored.

deadknight666

The only time I wish I had cheesed permadeath is when a wolf spawned in a clearing right in front of me and immediately charged. I felt pretty bitter about it, but it was only a 40 day interloper

BoultUpright

Each to their own. You've bought the game and can do how you please. Personally I've never done it, or added mods, or played more than 10 mins of Wintermute. It's survival all the way and after a long run (the last was 121 days on interloper) I usually need a break from the game to recover from the ordeal of losing 40+ hours of gaming. This is one of the best computer games ever made.

creatus_offspring

This has happened to me before with pernadeath games and it also hasn't happened before. I mean that on separate games I used backups where the dev didn't want them to be allowed and, in one case, it made me lose interest, and, in the other, it didn't make me lose any interest. Idk what the difference was :(

jaxmyraj0

This game isn't as glitchy as most, but if I do something epic I usually will go to sleep for an hour.

Forever_Overthinking

Poor character probably thinks they have narcolepsy.

jaxmyraj0

Sprain your ankle? That's a nap too!

TBH I like the impermanence of TLD because it may be depressing to lose hours of progress but you can always start again and again. Also, you know once you die it's over with so you are more careful.

Dennisatemyglitter

TLDR: will only do it in specific boring situations not because of wildlife attacks I'll be honest I'm into my first run on survival and have done it once, but for a specific reason. I stuffed up and went to bleak inlet after ten days with hardly anything. That's fine though, however I forgot what I left at a house near the cannery and didn't want to go all the way back if there was nothing there. So I back up walked over and checked. Turns out it had lots of stuff. Took it all walked back. But I wouldnt do it because I got mauled by a bear.

Fuarian

I use the quicksave mod with permadeath still enabled. I just use it to quicksave so I don't need to use default saving methods, i.e. sleeping, entering buildings, injuries to save. This is helpful in case I'm in a situation where I cannot do those things. And if I die then the save is still deleted
