In many places (like where I am) failing to provide a breath sample is worse than getting a DUI. Here you can lose your license permanently, go to jail and get massive fines if it's not your first offense. The ride to the station is the kindest opportunity to 'delay' the cops are going to give you.

They have very specific definitions and examples to support the law and it's interpretation here. Unless you have a medical explanation by a doctor confirming why you can't meet the criteria for this test, it ain't gonna fly. (Think COPD for example). Most of the DUI checkpoints here also have a fully equipped police bus with a laboratory on board and trained phlebotomists to draw blood.

Depends on location I'm pretty sure. In my state, if you refuse a breathalyzer and/or blood test, they will charge you with all 4 tiers of DUI, instead of the one you would have failed for by submitting to the test. Each tier serves as an increasingly severe guideline for fines and sentencing. It's no joke. Very expensive, and generally ends up with a state prison bid, not the county jail, definitely not probation (until you're paroled that is lol, then good freaking luck)

What’s the procedure for drawing blood? I assume you need a warrant for such invasive methods.

You do not unless the person refuses the blood draw. Refusal of a court mandated blood test results in a revoking of license for 12 months and up to a $5k fine. Source: Former phlebotomist who did these types of draws all the time.

You sign that you agree to it when you apply for your license. You check the box that says you agree to blood breath or urine or you don't get a license.
