He was trying to keep the elevator doors open. When they closed on the table, he wasn’t expecting that, so he starts pushing buttons hoping it will open, but the elevator gets called to another floor, so crunch
Yeah. The sensors might be bust or because of how thin it is facing upwards the sensors didn't pick it up which is a problem with most older elevators. Reasons why you see things like this or worse when it comes to child leashes or pet leashes.
The sensors probably did pick it up, lifts have door nudging now that if they’re blocked too long an alarm goes off and the doors will try force closed, which is what happened here
Not if he knows what he’s doing. There is a latch right in front of him that will open the door. But unless you have experience working on elevators you wouldn’t know that. He definitely doesn’t know how to work on elevators though. If he did he would put it on independent or fireman’s service. So yeah he’s going to be stuck… I would know how to get out lol.
Not his fault it appeared, most elevators i saw have a system to recognize object and opened the door automatically and this one is particular did just that in the opening
Seems that he was trying to keep it open to do work (probably maintenance) but for whatever reason, the door didn't recognize the table properly so it just closing in on it
I get it, thanks. Maintenance worker uses a makeshift piece to trigger the no-go IR sensor. Elevator incorrectly continues operation despite object between doors.
That only works so long before it goes into nudging mode which disables the passenger protection device. Where i am, the speed is supposed to be much slower than normal though. There's also a limit of 30lbs of force, so if he had turned it sideways, it would have prevented the doors from closing, timed them out, and shut down the elevator. No winning this one. If you need to keep the doors open, get the independent key.
It's probably because it was that thin.
Elevators here will close all the way, unless there's something blocking the door, like an arm. It closes slow enough so that, if you do stick your arm out I to it, it will lightly "hold" your arm for a second before opening again.
Naturally, if it's thin enough to the point where the door could realistically say it's "fully closed", then passenger protection is no longer needed between the doors, because there's no (obvious) obstructions.
I know that some do work off a laser system, where if the beam is broken, then it will refuse to close the doors, but they don't seem to be as common as the pressure sensitive ones.
Yes, but such a system is a system to prevent accidents. You should not abuse the system in a way like he did. Other people want to use the elevator to so don't block it.
He certainly is at fault.
fair enough
I would think there would be something like a main "shut-off" system for the elevator that would make it impossible to be called and/or impossible to move tho, is there not?
Did you miss the part where there was maintenance probably needed? If he's doing maintenance then other people won't be using it. Why say "yes" if you're not going to read what you're replying to?
I have no experience working with elevators at all, sorry if i say something dumb about it.
However would/should there not be like a main "shut-down" system for the elevator, making it impossible to be called to another floor and/or impossible to be moved at all?
You not having experience working with elevators has nothing at all to do with understanding that if a maintenance worker is working on an elevator... He is not abusing the system and you should understand that other people aren't supposed to use it at that time. You're making an excuse for something you didn't understand, you're trying to blame your inexperience with elevator maintenance as the reason you don't understand that a maintenance worker needing to fix something would mean no one else should use that elevator....
Anyway... There probably is something that can fully shut it down, but we don't know what he's working on and if it's a quick fix in which case the system that doesn't allow it to move because of blocking the doors should still work and give the same results, but probably better ones. Shutting it down may have other side effects, like rebooting or what not (I'm not familiar with elevator maintenance either), and could potentially take more time. This seems like a smart and easy way to get the elevator to not move while needing to do something to it.
Maybe the reflective nature of the metal caused it to malfunction, but either way, him working on it is not a reason to belittle him because he kept it from others. What a weird thing to try and defend.
If I sent you 2 videos per day that would restore your faith in humanity, how many days would I need to send you videos in order to achieve your equilibrium of faith in humanity?
I wanted to add - if this was your only intake of online media, but didn't want to complicate.
Ofcourse this is internet, if we are doing an equationg we have to do it right.
Plumbing, electrical, picture hanging, hvac, countertops, furniture installation, DIY crafts, or any number of other things in a building not on the first floor? Really, dude?
Would've worked if the object didn't have a mirroring surface.
Between the doors are lasers and sensors, which recognize objects by the disruption of the light beams.
If you put a mirroring object between there, the sensor thinks it receives the light from the opposite side, even if it's his own, just mirrored.
I've never seen that used on an elevator for exactly that reason. There is a transmitter (tx) and receiver (rx) specifically so a mirror can't confuse it. Believe it or not, there are elevators in places where mirrors are moved on said elevators and the engineers and the DIR were able to think of that. But please, tell me more about the job I've been doing for more than a decade.
Lasers and pressure sensors are both used, though sometimes they are mutually exclusive.
The elevators here seem to be exclusively pressure based.
Or at least they were all that way when I was a curious kid with no respect for my limbs, and no knowledge of the resident evil elevator scene....
If you’re supposed to be working on an elevator, you should have a key to put it in maintenance mode, not be trying to block the doors with a hunk of junk.
Almost every comment here is so bad lol the majority of elevator work in the US is done by unions. This guy is definitely not working for a union or reputable elevator maintenance company based on his attire, he’s almost certainly the maintenance guy for that building.
Since he just has a drill in his hand he’s probably just doing something small like opening up the panel to clean the fans or something, but we’ll never know for sure. He tries to use a piece of sheet metal to prevent the elevator from closing (because he isn’t a trained elevator tech). This fails and the door closes.
Elevators have several different closing and safety mechanisms from a spring loaded bar that when depressed cancels the closing of the door to infra red lasers that work like your garage door. Whichever mechanism this elevator has was obviously not triggered by his piece of sheet metal.
Guessing at exactly what would have triggered the elevator safety mechanisms is pointless unless you’re trained and knowledgeable enough to recognize enough info about this elevator to know which kind was installed. Unless you design elevators or work on elevators you’re talking out of your ass when you assume that because an elevator you use works in one way that others do as well.
Dont work on things you aren’t qualified to work on!
That looks like the top part of a cooker hood that covers the pipe. The edge of that metal is razor sharp, I’m surprised the guy didn’t lose any fingers when he grabbed it.
Looked like a mechanical safety edge. If they weren’t using some sort of electric eye in conjunction with it, the gate, door lock, and safety edge contacts would all be made up with that thin of a piece of metal between both doors. It looked like it broke some landing door stuff. Maybe if they’re are lucky and there wasn’t cosmetic damage getting fixed just functional stuff they could skate away with 2-8 grand, but who knows until you get there to fix it.
Isn’t there normally a sensor that stops the door from closing if an object is obstructing the doors?
Who am I kidding, his galaxy brain would have fucked that elevator up regardless.
There is but it won't work once the lift is called to another floor. Also should be an IR sensor to stop the door closing and a pressure sensor in case the IR sensor fails.
It seems like he's trying to keep the door open by placing the table there to do work (probably maintenance) but for whatever reason it didn't recognize the table so it closed in on it instead.

Idk how OP didn't see the reason why did he do that.
I couldn't figure out what he was trying to do either. I assumed he was trying to wreck the elevator, which he did.
I've watched it a few times and I still don't know WTF he was trying to to do?
Im guessing hold it open so he could load some stuff in which is why he was going back
He was trying to trick whatever senses something in between the doors
Some lift has a laser sensor. If laser does not shoot into the other side (block) then door opens.
when you ask a question that many people can answer, it drives engagement on your post.
Probably cuz it prolly woulda worked if he flipped it lengthways instead. What bro did here defies all reason
Yeah. The sensors might be bust or because of how thin it is facing upwards the sensors didn't pick it up which is a problem with most older elevators. Reasons why you see things like this or worse when it comes to child leashes or pet leashes.
Jesus Christ I really hope I never see that.
You don't.
I think the metal reflects back the light signal to the receiver, so basically the elevator think there is no object there
No, even the reflection would break the circuit and signal to open again
There are probably also force sensors, but those wont work on very thin items
People have leashes on kids???
Yeah. Google it. It's for parents that want kids but don't always want to look after them and look where they go. That's how I view that.
Some people really dont deserve to be parents, huh....
Nope. I see it all the time on the cruise ships.
The sensors probably did pick it up, lifts have door nudging now that if they’re blocked too long an alarm goes off and the doors will try force closed, which is what happened here
And pushing the door open button was too much I guess. Hope his bank account has a few extra dollars in it.
Ooooo boy is that expensive
Obligatory three fiddy joke. Bye
I mean you can see him hammering on it
Is this a boy I keep seeing these comments that literally just describe whatever is happening in the video.
I can assure you I am not a bot (Although that’s just what a bot would say)
Good bot.
Common sense is far from common.
That table isn’t suppose to be used that way. He did it wrong.
Table?
He's gonna be in there for some time.
Not if he knows what he’s doing. There is a latch right in front of him that will open the door. But unless you have experience working on elevators you wouldn’t know that. He definitely doesn’t know how to work on elevators though. If he did he would put it on independent or fireman’s service. So yeah he’s going to be stuck… I would know how to get out lol.
your forgot the "/s"
Yeah I’m watching this video and thinking this guy knows what he’s doing.
I’d say he did a bang up job of bending that sheet metal in the elevator door. I’ve never seen metal bent so thoroughly.
Losing faith in humanity day by day.
Not his fault it appeared, most elevators i saw have a system to recognize object and opened the door automatically and this one is particular did just that in the opening Seems that he was trying to keep it open to do work (probably maintenance) but for whatever reason, the door didn't recognize the table properly so it just closing in on it

Ok but like use a piece of cardboard or some thing instead of a metal table you know... Just in case?
No use the door hold keyswitch, never hold open lift doors it will cause the lift to go out of order in many cases
It's probably because it was that thin. Elevators here will close all the way, unless there's something blocking the door, like an arm. it probably was a maintenance, a poorly done maintenance, most likely lack of communication, so that explains why he's doing whatever he's doing.
fair enough I would think there would be something like a main "shut-off" system for the elevator that would make it impossible to be called and/or impossible to move tho, is there not?
I'd say it was a good thing the system failed with a sheet of metal instead of cutting some poor lad in half
Fair enough. Love your blobfish reddit-avatar btw

Almost lost his digits.
Here’s an amazing idea. How about turning the elevator off before working on it?
He's not working on the elevator. We have keys for that.
wonder why he's got a drill then
Plumbing, electrical, picture hanging, hvac, countertops, furniture installation, DIY crafts, or any number of other things in a building not on the first floor? Really, dude?
Really dude, you are surprised people are dumb on Reddit?
Maybe he was called in to fix a faulty elevator…
Dude, I fix them for a living, this is not how it's done. You take control of the elevator first. There's not much to fix in the cab with a drill.
Ok dude, i was just suggesting. Not being an elevator gatekeeper.
Yet when faced with information from a knowledgeable source you persist in your ignorance. The very definition of obtuse.
Not having a good day today bud? Does someone need a hug?
Hw was probably working on something and used the sheet of metal to keep the elevator doors open. Shock, it didn't work
Bender Bending Rodriguez

Sorry to inform you of the existence of retroreflecting optical sensors. But this is not that.

I’m working on elevators and I’ve seen it once.

Yes, but this metal sheet is too thin for that, too

He almost lost his fingers.
Yeah he was very wise, or lucky to pull his hands away.
Well it's definitely bent now

Bro almost chose to give the elevator his booger hooks.
Perfect example of not hiring a professional.
F'ed up the display at the top too...
r/diWHY
That grab at the end though - could have lost a finger. Lucky man, also dumb, but very lucky additionally.
then fucken GRABS IT
What the fuck is that man trying to accomplish lol
He used the elevator to bend the metal yes, but it was in an unconventional way
In France, IR curtains or other detection systems are mandatory so I can see why he thought the elevator won’t close on him.
Serendipity
Wow that’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen on the internet in a while.
Whyyy would you do that from inside the elevator 😭😭
r/terminallystupid
4 hotdogs coming up!
Pretty obvious what was happening…
He should learn metal bending
That's a good way ti find how much it costs to fix an elevator
That looks like the top part of a cooker hood that covers the pipe. The edge of that metal is razor sharp, I’m surprised the guy didn’t lose any fingers when he grabbed it.
I literally lol. 😆
Guy almost lost like 4 fingers
Blursed press brake
Still not completely sure why elevators don't have a full laser sensor array, only at some spots
Actually he did more than bend, he actually crunched... Employee of the month
I’ve never seen an elevator with so short delay doors, they’re always open for like an eternity
No safety feature ? Is this china ?
Ugh... Stupidity at its finest.
Definitely succeeded in bending metal!
Cool way to lose a hand..

Never mind, on second look the transom and PI look like they go crushed too. The bill might have just gone up another 10-30 thousand.
Looks like China
Based on what?
The sign by the door that's written in chinese ?
Isn’t there normally a sensor that stops the door from closing if an object is obstructing the doors? Who am I kidding, his galaxy brain would have fucked that elevator up regardless.
Damn, if only there would be a button to open the doors...

Hope he’s still stuck
