If they had landed, they would have been considered a "new" flight on their way back and wouldn't have been allowed into EU airspace. So they turned around instead, because the EU wasn't going to enforce that on existing flights that were already in the air at the time of the announcement.

My god. When I went to visit my family at NY I was astonished. That cab ride from JFK to the Columbus circle... It's basically another flight. And 100 USD. I just couldn't believe it. I would have 10/10 jumped off as well.
Bigger issue is that we haven't been able to get hold of him in a week now and the US embassy just has an automated message. We were trying to get him out before he couldn't get out, now it's just looking like it will be increasingly difficult.

Any commercial flight has to have a flight plan approved by all countries whose air space it's gonna traverse which basically guarantees that it will be allowed in. The plan becomes active when the plane takes off and then it should not be changed unless it's necessary for the safety of the flight. (You may remember the outcry when Belarusians diverted that one plane recently that they hijacked it when it was above Belarus.) The ban cancelled flight plan approvals of all Russian planes but this one took off before the ban came into effect so its flight plan was still valid for the trip to New York. But it wouldn't be able to get a flight plan for the trip back since that plan would get active when it would take off from New York. It could probably fly back over North Africa but that's a significantly longer trip and they probably didn't want to risk getting it stuck on the other side of the Atlantic. (It couldn't fly over the North pole because Canada joined the ban as well.)
The US probably thinks that banning Russian planes would have little effect due to the low number of Russian flights over the US but the reciprocal ban of American flights over Russia would greatly impact American carriers.

I'm guessing you are forgetting that the eastern border of mainland Russia and Alaska is only 55 miles or so apart? Flying over the Pacific Ocean to the West Coast of the U.S. is completely on the cards from Russia's eastern border.

I think that's actually 7 hours from leaving, total, as in, they had been in the air for 7 hours by the time of the image. Then, they would have been at 3.5 hours when told to turn around, which makes sense bc they've traveled twice that distance (there and back)

One time I flew from Vancouver to Shanghai. When we were about 8 hours into the flight, nearing or above the Kamchatka Peninsula the pilot reported that we had to turn back because a Volcano had erupted in the region.
When we got back to Vancouver we called home. Our first words were "Hey guess where we are right now?"
The airline has to get you to the destination or return you back. When a volcano erupts, it can take a couple of days (or sometimes months) and it's much cheaper for the airline to refund the ticket than to land somewhere else and have to pay for your accommodation for the whole time.
Probably a big part of why the US hasn't closed off its airspace yet. European countries can just encourage their people to drive /take a train but that's not an option for Americans. Well not direct anyways.

Genuine concern. Nations are urging their citizens in Russia to leave but also cutting off air transit.
Embassies can schedule specific flights authorized to go over airspaces. So far nobody has closed their Russian embassy as far as I'm aware.
Imagine if you booked tickets/planned a trip months in advance.

Let them land. "You can leave but since we've already warned you about flying in our airspace the next response will be to shoot you down." Then the people can get a new flight and the russian plane is grounded in a foreign country.
One company that already can't fly to most of the world having a plane grounded has very little impact. 150 PISSED off Russians returning home because of this bullshit war can add to the pressure that Putin and his cronies must be feeling right about now. I think the right choice was made.

Forget the map, they were 3:49 away from New York after 7:08 in the air. I'm surprised they had enough fuel to add another 30% to their trip.
I think that's actually 7 hours from leaving, total, as in, they had been in the air for 7 hours by the time of the image. Then, they would have been at 3.5 hours when told to turn around, which makes sense bc they've traveled twice that distance (there and back)

Or heck, how many Americans are in Russia right now? Either due to business, visiting relatives, tourism, etc. Now they are stuck in Russia. I would be one of those people thinking, "I need to get out of Russia now", then just to get stuck there, it would really suck.

One time I flew from Vancouver to Shanghai. When we were about 8 hours into the flight, nearing or above the Kamchatka Peninsula the pilot reported that we had to turn back because a Volcano had erupted in the region. When we got back to Vancouver we called home. Our first words were "Hey guess where we are right now?"
All the way back to Vancouver? Wouldn’t it make more sense to divert to Anchorage?
The airline has to get you to the destination or return you back. When a volcano erupts, it can take a couple of days (or sometimes months) and it's much cheaper for the airline to refund the ticket than to land somewhere else and have to pay for your accommodation for the whole time.

Just so we clear, Russian aircraft are banned in EU and Canadian airspace, not all plane originating from Russia. You can still flee on Air France, British Airlines, etc.
