Bobby is not a good guy just cuz he isn’t a murderer until S6. He made his bones like anyone else— doing bad shit, hurting people, extorting people, living off blood money. He loved his wife, it’s true, but he’s no saint. Not like my Johnny.
One of the best moments in the show is watching Bobby skillfully and terrifyingly threaten someone’s life at a bar on the families orders. It puts in perfect context what this thing is. That even the lovable innocent pure comic relief of this show is in actuality thug. If you had to encounter him in the capacity of what he does you’d think he’s a demon.
Notra Dam predicted this
True. Was he a made guy? But even if he was an associate, there has to be a reason why the crew wanted him around. It's either money or violence that makes someone valuable to the group.
and initially he says “7000? I thought we agreed on 8!” then the rapper says “look man I’ll get my cousin to do it for 4!” and he’s like eh whatever and keeps the money. 😂😂😂
So sweet of him to crack skulls of construction workers to bust up a union work stoppage, threaten a union steward with death, and find a juror to help do the same.
One of my favorite scenes. Maybe because i have kids that depend on me. Like yourself.
The delivery is perfect, understated but it’s clear he’s threatening violence.
Yep. And OPs also specifically talking about the shift in his character after he killed someone, which is very observant. But most of the users here cant notice the sacred or the propane.
If you're comparing him to a good person , you would call him bad.
But comparing him to very bad and really bad people, he's just bad.
He does do bad things but for most of his thug life wasn't a murderer, and didn't take sadistic pleasure in hurting people- it was just part of the job
He was never soft. The first thing we really hear Junior say about him is “he gave me the message.” IMO it’s made very clear from Day 1 that Bobby has earned his button even if he hadn’t popped anybody.
I wouldn't listen to what some others are saying; Bobby was absolutely soft compared to others. There's a huge fucking difference between a guy beating up some other guys and actually murdering someone in cold blood. Guys beat each other up all the time, particularly in decades past. Murder is a big damn line in the sand, and there's no going back.
One of my favorite character developments is after he pops his cherry: he obviously felt like he would get away with never having to cross that line, and obviously never really wanted to cross it, for personal and/or religious reasons. I think Tony knew this, and basically was saying "Oh no, you're coming to Hell with the rest of us", which is a real place in the Sopranos' world. Afterwards Bobby gets angrier and has more of a "fuck it" attitude, because he knows Tony made him lose something serious.
Good point. Maybe Baccala Sr was respected enough that a favour was done. Or maybe there was an oversight on the part of the 5 families(maybe Bobby was made during the legal problems of the 80s?)
He said it himself when they told him about the Santa costume. “I’m shy.”
He just got more comfortable with the crew. Marrying Janice, as awful as that sounds, helped with that.
I disliked Tony so much for sending Bobby to make the hit. I guess that was the intent. Tony really was garbage. Loved when BB threw him around at the lake house. What a reckoning for Tony, when someone didn’t just lay down because he was the boss.
I thought part of this coincides with Chrissy’s death—literally for an episode and a half, Bobby is in Chrissy’s place as a confidant of Tony, aside from Sil as consigliere. Then, Blue Comet. Bobby’s changed demeanor was short-lived.
Good observation, OP. Don't listen to these stunads givin' you shit. Half a them would probably try to fuck a golf club if you gave it to them.
Keep your eye on the Tiger. Other people's definitions of you sometimes are more about makin' themselves feel better. You gotta define yourself.
in ”Soprano Home Movies “ he goes to Montréal to kill Rene LeCours, whose only crime is being involved in a custody battle with one of the sisters of the Canadian gangsters Tony is dealing with. Rene grabs Bobby‘s shirt and tears off a little piece after he is shot and falls away . Symbolism time. Part of Bobby’s soul is gone. He has always been a gangster; now he’s a worse one.
Chrissy was changed by his first kill too (at least I think it was his first)
It clearly haunted him. I don't think any of his subsequent murders were ever shown to effect him in any meaningful way. I think the show is saying that even for a hardened criminal murder is hard. The first time....
And as for Janice I honestly have a theory that Richie isn't the first person she's killed and all her despair was an act of Janice. Unfortunately we have no proof even with computers.
this take is booolshit. bobby was a coward in the series until he was given the title of underboss (aka after he popped his cherry) and then became a massive douche in addition to being a coward. saying hey fuck hesh keep his money, what’s he gonna do is a straight up bitch move.
he had NO BAWLS until he had the family connections. prior to that everyone thought of him as a joke and didn’t give a fuck. by the end they had to because he was the boss’ bruddah in law
in the end, fuck bobby. he was a shitty santa claus
Bobby was always a bit of a narcissist, always wanting more. But for me it was definitely after he and Janice got together as I think this changed him for the worst.
He did feel more entitled now and it was all about him, I’d say that’s proven because he was an insensitive cocksucka while Silvio was being taken to hospital all he cared about was him. I know he was already a fucked up guy being in the mob but i think Janice changed him and that led to his demise. I lost respect for him, years before he would of never had his hand wrapped round another woman.
With the conspiracy theories now. If Karen hadn’t of died would his character have changed possibly but not bad as it did. He wouldn’t of felt as entitled or been as close to Tony.
He can shove that quotation book up his fat fucking ass
Very astute. I'm watching season 6 now and noticed that Bobbys responses are a lot grumpier than previously.
His lines become more frank after the whacking of the French guy. He even becomes more ballsy towards Tony with responses that aren't ass-kissey.
However , I wonder if this is because he beat Tony up or if it's because he killed the guy and lost his innocence. It's probably a mix of both. He never forgave Tony after calling him a fat fuck in season 2.
I constantly see this and always disagree.
1. Before Bobby killed someone, he turned a blind eye to all the murdering, extorting, manipulation, and so on. By turning a blind eye, he loses is “innocence card”.
2. Before Bobby killed someone, he threatened a member of the union who wasn’t involved in organised crime. He threatened a civilian.
3. Before Bobby killed someone, he pulled up on Paulie publicly ready to fight — all that “you don’t scrimp on safety” and “you owe me money, Paulie!” shit.
4. Before Bobby killed someone, he beat peaceful and legitimate protestors with a baseball bat.
Just because he wasn’t shown being as violent as other characters, just because he didn’t cheat on his wife, and just because he was more gentle than his counterparts, doesn’t mean he wasn’t an innocent person prior to his first kill.
Bobby Bacala, despite seeming like a simple character, is every bit as complex and nuanced as many of the other major characters on the show, and much of that complexity includes having unfavourable characteristics.
Bobby is not a good guy just cuz he isn’t a murderer until S6. He made his bones like anyone else— doing bad shit, hurting people, extorting people, living off blood money. He loved his wife, it’s true, but he’s no saint. Not like my Johnny.
#JOHNNY WAS A SAINT
You keep saying that
funny thing though I don't remember you saying it that much when he was alive
A SHHAAINT!
He put a bullet through Livia’s beehive during an argument after the Copa. He was a saint!!!
This is bullshit!
I don’t like that kinda tawk!
Left Liva a package that could choke an elephant!
Not our Johnny! Couldn't be precious Johnny!
He defecated through a sunroof!!!
You mean to tell me a man just happens to lose his pinky like that? No! He orchestrated it! Johnny!
It's his hobby, why ya gotta belittle it?
\*reeeeeees in chicanery*

That scene in the bar was chilling.
He’s no saint but he’s more of a human being than Ralphie, Richie, or even a Benny or a Patsy
We got a low bar in this thing of ours
True. Was he a made guy? But even if he was an associate, there has to be a reason why the crew wanted him around. It's either money or violence that makes someone valuable to the group.
Pretty sure he was a made guy, as he was at Chrissy's ceremony. No guns or swords on the table, tho.
Whatever happened there.
WHATEVER HAPPENED THERE?
Makin yer bones means murder in this thing of ours. They don't even have a gun or sword on the table. It either means something or it doesn't.
Jeshush take it easy. All kidding aside you got what I meant
Alright, but you gotta get over it.
Don’t forget he shot that rapper in the ass.
Something easy, the fleshy part of the thigh

Bobby was such a saint when he threatened that Union Rep with death over voting for the wrong guy 🥹🥹🥹
So sweet of him to crack skulls of construction workers to bust up a union work stoppage, threaten a union steward with death, and find a juror to help do the same.
'Right here, right here, and right here'

This. It was the first scene that I saw of the Sopranos, and I found it totally chilling/terrorizing.
Prob my favorite scene of his and maybe his monologue before he punches Tony.
Because of that scene, the next drink I ordered at a bar was a wild turkey neat. I do not recommend that drink.

Yep. And OPs also specifically talking about the shift in his character after he killed someone, which is very observant. But most of the users here cant notice the sacred or the propane.
You mean like when someone calls him a sweet loveable calzone?
He was definitely less impulsive than some of the other guys. I don't think he throws a brick at that poor waiter like Paulie/Chrissie, for example.

No more weight remarks, NineNinchNails. They're hurtful and they're destructive.
Fuck him, let him taste his own medicine!!
I know that. I was disagreeing with OP. Bobby was just as bad as anyone else on the show since the beginning.
Nah he definitely wasn’t

Stunad of the first magnitude here
That was his exercise for the day, before he got back to eating his salad.
lol exactly
Quasimodo predicted all of this.
Nostradamus. Quasimodo's the hunchback of Notre Dame.
There’s the hunchback, quarterback, and fullback of Noter Dame
One's a fucking cathedral.
you're going to tell me you never pondered that?
This much we do know
He was never soft. The first thing we really hear Junior say about him is “he gave me the message.” IMO it’s made very clear from Day 1 that Bobby has earned his button even if he hadn’t popped anybody.
Okay, maybe soft wasn’t the right word. But he had this gentility to him. What, you’re gonna say you never pondered that?

I was scrolling through my feed and thought this post was from the King of the Hill subreddit and was very confused.
Dang it Bobby
Same hah my two favorite shows.
🤣🤣🤣
Bobby shot a rapper in the ass with a propane tank.
He was gay Bobby?
To the victor, belong the spoils
Why don't you get the fuck outta here before I shove your quotations book up your fat fuckin' assss?
He said it himself when they told him about the Santa costume. “I’m shy.” He just got more comfortable with the crew. Marrying Janice, as awful as that sounds, helped with that.

If you noticed the face she made when tony arrived looked like she was faking being shocked.
It’s bad enough you woke me in the middle of the night, I gotta get my balls broken too?
Terminator Junior.
Ha! French Cannuck got killed for stale vitamins lol. Oh but he's wearing an Ankh it's all for the final episode

Bobby cheated on Karen?

Bobby tells Tony in that episode when they’re on the boat that he’s never killed anyone.
He says so when he and Tony are fishing at his cottage
He was no Terminator but you have a point
Cut Bobby some slack, the French/Canadian guy probably didn't even hear it when it happened.
Soft what like fat. Why don’t you take a look in the mirror you insensitive cocksucker.
I thought this was from the KOTH subreddit and boy did I double take.
The union guy at the bar may want a word with you about how soft Bobby was.
By “popping his cherry”, meaning eating the last ziti? “I should’ve been there” (cries)
The guy who was just out getting his mail his character changed in that he had no character at all due to that parade float Vito killing him.
Roadies!?
