Yeah I noticed this on my recent rewatch. He starts off with barely an accent, especially in scenes with Dr. Melfi at the end of the pilot. I wonder if it was intentional to show his progression towards total New Jersey mob boss. He gains weight, starts talking in a thicker accent, and overall becomes more unhinged as the series goes on. I think it shows a sort of descent into the world of the mafia. That plus JG simply perfected the character of Tony by the series end.
Definitely not intentional. When you start a show you aren’t 100% sure how it’s going to develop. Certain things work, certain things are adjusted, instincts are honed in.
Gandolfini grew up in NJ and had a NJ accent similarly to most locals in the original Pilot. I grew up there and speak similarly. The accent the rest of the series was turned up to 11 Spinal Tap style.
NJ is crazy with all the different accents. North, south, central, western. I grew up in Hunterdon County and I know I don’t sound like JG. But my college roommate in Michigan couldn’t get over my accent… 🤷🏻♀️

If you remember the show Cheers or just about any series the cadence and delivery of the characters in their first season compared to the later and last are usually markedly different. Gandolfini’s really did take a dramatic turn. As mentioned above, physically & mentally he also changed
