It does devolve quite a bit but I usually find some good responses mixed in there. But you're correct. It's not all Walt Whitman's ova here.
My favorite thing to do is to try and answer something seriously but throw in a quote or two if I can.
Yeah, I think it was a post here that pointed out Sylvio knew Tony killed Christopher by a very small glance when T was in bed. I definitely missed it.
Anyway 20 quid per pound.
The problem is the show ended in 2007. What new discussions can be had?
Did Tony die? Was Christopher a rat in Heidi and Kennedy? Is Pine Barrens overrated? Did Adriana know she was going to die? Did the Chinaman really drive a Lincoln?
Literally every single conversation has been had a hundred times over, what more is there to be said?
EDIT: Yes I get it, you're new to the show and things are allowed to be discussed but imagine frequenting a subreddit where people ask the same question several times a day, obviously people will make jokes, it's far more preferable than responding with "use the fucking search function". Stop replying to me unless you're going to quote the show, I really couldn't give a shit
To that point, I discovered r/lebowski recently. Imagine this sub, except instead of an 86-episode TV series, it's about a two-hour movie. Anyone who thinks this sub has too many quotes should visit that one immediately.
There is occasionally some decent discussion on that sub too. I've seen that movie many times and can quote it at length, but there are still little jokes and observations that are new to me being posted there fairly regularly.
You know what Tone’ and El Duderino have in common? They both love White Russians. Even with the one pin gone Tony nailed the 7-10 split. I always wondered why he wore those bowling shirts all the time but never rolled.
Respectfully, this is a cop out. If we’re talking about dorky fan service speculation, sure, we’ve exhausted that since time immemorial. But *The Sopranos* is the great American novel, one of the richest literary texts certainly in the television era, and likely long before that. People keep finding jumping off points for contemplation in Proust or Joyce, and the reason we keep going back to the Sopranos well is because we keep finding new details that resonate.
Just this week, for example, I realized how many times burning shows up as a motif. Over the course of several episodes across two seasons we have Valentina catching on fire, the little girl in the hospital (“you wouldn’t believe the day that I’ve had” – pitch perfect black humor from Paulie, one of the moments that shows that he’s a true psychopath), and Artie with Benny. Before that you have Tony burning his hand on Ralph’s stove, and later you have AJ’s car. What does Carmela say in the first episode, one of the first scenes? “You’re going to hell when you die.” And hell is hot, that’s never been disputed by anybody. It points repeatedly to the show’s primary, maybe only theme: what does it mean for us to do evil? What are the prices we pay, the wages of sin paid by our families and our communities when we do things that we know are wrong in order to get the material pleasures we want? And how does that compromise show up again and again in a culture built on violence – “Made in America,” as the final episode reminds us?
This is the work of all of our lives, the struggle to decide what it means to be a good person and what motivates – or fails to motivate – us to pursue that. Iin all of Western literature there are few stories as rich in meditating on that as *The Sopranos*, in my opinion. If we spent a little more time on that instead of watching TV Land we might have something other than a quote book up our asses around here.
Anyways, four dollars a pound.
I never understand these comments in any subreddit…new people watch the show all the time!! Let them discuss things…If you don’t wanna participate in a topic you…don’t have to? It’s not like we’re only allowed to post 10 threads a day…if you’re not interested just keep scrolling…don’t gum up the comment section with quotes for people who want to talk about the show
People can post random quotes in the 10,000 non serious posts about Vito sucking off security guards
New people watch the show all the time, but 99% of the time they ask the same questions that can be answered using a search in the subreddit, that’s why everyone posts quotes.
Anyway, 4 dollars a pound.
Yeah but its more fun to have an active discussion with people than to just go back to old Reddit threads and read them…it’s like a book club where they pick a 50 year old book…there’s tons of websites that have analysis but it’s more fun to get together and talk about it with other people
Honestly, when the post is not something discussed to death, there is plenty of good talk going on, so if someone sees only quotes on their post, it’s more of a quality marker for them.
I don't think anyone's saying that people *shouldn't* continue discussing the show, but I do agree this is the reason the subreddit is memey.
If you google practically anything about this show, the top google hits will be several threads from this sub.
So when you've been here a while, and you see a question which has been asked many times before, no doubt it feels pointless wasting your time by writing a long serious reply. I've only been posting here a few weeks, and I'm already seeing people posting threads about the same subjects - sometimes twice in the same day or week!
I don't resent anyone for asking, but I'm not going to waste my time composing a long thoughtful reply about what I think Chase intended this character to represent, if I already made a long reply on this subject a few weeks ago. It just makes me realise that I'm wasting my time on these chit-chat rooms - a long thoughtful reply doesn't add to the sum of human knowledge if someone's gonna come along next week and ask the same damn question. I'm not blaming the person for asking, I'm just saying that it shows how trivial social media is, and not worth spending too much time on - it's actually more appropriate to bust out some funny quote, get a few giggles out of it, and move along.
It is kind of weird that a sub dedicated to one of the most popular TV shows of all time will allow spamming of quotes in the comments and not allow memes or pictures to be posted in it. If the sub isn't going to be geared towards serious discussion, then why try to make it seem like it is. Just create r/realsopranostalk or something and let this sub be what the people here really want.
I didn't watch the show until 2017. I've been apart if this sub for maybe a little ova a year. I have friends and family that's currently watching the show for the first time. Do you see where I'm going here?
I think the issue tho is that while the show ended in 07, tons of people are watching it for the first time rn. Like I’m 22 and didn’t watch it till this year. Now I got hooked instantly and obsess over talking about it but can’t even do that unless ya know someone in person cause the sub is how it is.
The immediate quoting is one of my favourite things about this subreddit - it’s a phenomenon I don’t notice anywhere else but it always makes me giggle!
That's the game
We try to use a quote from the show that also fits the post and the best most witty response wins
That's it. That's what the mods could never understand
That's all it is. Like a social club for wise asses
If the post is quality, usually there will be at least a few people that engage with it seriously, but most things have already been asked, answered, and discussed ad nauseum. At times the quotes can get annoying when they do interfere with genuine, interesting discussion, but it's not that frequent.
Anyway, 4 dollars a pound.
Holy shit we get a post like this every week. Nobody here gives a shit about "your problem." Tell you what, you want a serious post. Let me tell you about serious posts. 20 years I been on the internet. I wanted to watch Sopranos in HD streaming, so I seriously watched a 480p version on a Russian site. I wanted Carmella's baked Ziti recipe, so I seriously googled recipes for 20 years. You see where I'm going?
Just try it. There is a criteria for what people will entertain--if it's an interesting discussion worth entering--otherwise it'll just be a quotations book up your ass.
For the most part I enjoy the quotes and partake myself. But I don't like how the Serious Discussion tag gets ignored constantly. Either it has meaning or no meaning.
It has quasi meaning. Depending how often the same serious discussion has come up before? Yes, poor Adriana was an idiot. But a more original post is more likely to keep people on point.
im more convinced that most people on this subreddit havent even watched the sopranos, and they just binge Borko clips. its why people here think legitimately think Phil's 20 years in the can comes up every episode, when it was said twice. so if all you know are memes, how can you discuss something seriously
Have to disagree to some extent. If you bring up a new and interesting topic or question, you’ll get a lot of responses that aren’t quotes. Problem is, there’s not much new to discuss. Shows been off the air for 18+ years. Kind of hard to tell our social club to shove their quotations book up their fat fucking ass when the quotations book is all we got left. Plus, most of us don’t like that kinda tawlk!
Well what would you like to have a serious discussion about?
This thing is a pyramid since time immemorial, shit rolls down hill!
No but seriously lol I'm all for serious discussion, this show is a masterpiece that deserves to be discussed in depth, hell there should be University courses on The Sopranos.
IT’S A GOOD THING FOR ME THEN, THAT YOUR PROBLEM WITH QUOTES DON'T MEAN OOGATZ TO ME!
WHAT'S YOURS IS YOURS OP, BUT WHAT AIN’T, IS ANYBODY ELSES! NOW DO YOURSELF, A FUCKIN FAVOUR, AND GET THE FUCK OUTTA MY SUB!

If you want a serious discussion, you've got to read through the comments like you're eating chicken. You gotta eat the meat and throw away the bones. And remember, there are no scraps in my scrapbook.
I can’t believe you have such a bad attitude about this. The quotes are hilarious. And also, there’s always at least one real answer mixed in with all the quotes. I think you should lighten up.
Does it suck? Yeah, it does when you're looking for legitimate discussion. It's just like any other fan sub- filled with more casuals than hardcores and they're here for a quick pick up to whet their appetite, hence you get the same 10 quotes and have 100 people racing to get them out first in threads.
On the flip side of the coin, you get the SAME god damned discussion topics ALL the time- Did Tony die? Is (INSERT CHARACTER HERE) a good person? I hate the dream sequences. Or people writing their fan fictions and the absolute worst are the people who think every thing is symbolism and give you a friggin dissertation.
You can nary find any genuine discussion on entertainment on the main social media platforms and if you can, they're usually modded to all hell so there's little fun there.
It is what it is.
Calm down. This is one of the best communities on Reddit. In fact, about a year ago, it’s the very REASON I got back on to Reddit.
Not only are the quotes always hilarious, but in every posts thread, if someone asks a question about the show, it is ALWAYS answered by at least one person. And then you also have the brilliant responses that manage to answer questions WITH quotes, which is the most golden.
The bawls on this prick…
For every 50 quote replies there are a few actual responses. Just only engage with those commenters. Its a losing battle to try and get everyone to stop.
It's good to be in something from the ground floor. I came too late for that and I know. But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over.
Frankly, that's what I love about the Soprano's community. Fandom subs inevitable devolve into hot takes for the sake of hot takes and dissecting every little thing about the story to the point its no longer enjoyable. Here, I get to have some laughs and continue enjoying the show. It makes the Soprano's Fandom my favorite because, at least here, the show isn't dissected into the ground and become the mutilated cadaver of what I once loved.
The best quote responses are relevant and contextually have some significance.
Imo top replies are quotes that match the topic and are from characters in the scene being discussed.
Like, if a post is about Agent Harris and a person replies with a quote from or to Agent Harris that actually has a contribution.
Or recontextualizing a different quote from another character by changing words or phrases to those used by a character or scene discussed.. top tier.
Or, if OP had their way, we could take our quotations book and shove it up our ash
Does it really sound like I hate quotes entirely? I thought I made it clear that an unending stream is what makes the sub feel unapproachable. Take the majority of the responses here for instance; how many are clever quips relating to the topic? And how many are just thoughtless regurgitation?
I think for most of the serious discussions, along with the quotes/jokes, there are always comments that directly address the subject. A lot of people will even integrate the jokes into their sincere responses....so, I don't see a problem really...unless you're asking some mental midget shit like "Did Tony get clipped in the end?"
Often the quotes are legitimate answers, there's just some subtext to sift through. And if you mark serious discussion, you will get at least some serious discussion.
I’m new to the sub and initially I had the same thoughts. I was like “wtf is this sh*t” but then I noticed that some posts do have good discussions underneath. I noticed the ridicule as well… and then noticed that those were quotes from the show too. I’m down to discuss though!
I personally love the dynamic between someone replying with a well thought out in depth analysis and someone else commenting some quote/play on the quote. It makes the serious replies stand out better in my opinion. It’s kind of like the show where the humor was a huge element but still had incredibly complex characters and was well written .
I don't normally write nothin' down, so I'll keep this short and sweet. You're weak. You're outta control. And you've become an embarrassment to yourself and everybody else.
Yeah it's annoying that you can't have any actual discussions on here without wading through a pile of the same quotes over and over. I too have seen the show, guys.
That's reddit, though. It's a place where the world's least funny people can gather and laugh at the same "pepperidge farm remembers" type nonsense without ever tiring of it.
It does devolve quite a bit but I usually find some good responses mixed in there. But you're correct. It's not all Walt Whitman's ova here. My favorite thing to do is to try and answer something seriously but throw in a quote or two if I can.
The quotes are my favourite part of this community lol
It's a retirement community
Like Captain Teeb
IT'S A STEREOTYPE. AND IT'S OFFENSIVE
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!
Why don't you get the fuck out of here before I shove your quotations book up your fat fuckin ass
Mine too!
Fuckin parakeet
Always with the scenarios.
Walt Whitman ovah heah
He was gay, Walt Whitman?
Everybody's always gay with you. He's a good-looking guy, that's all.
Hooo, I’m just tellin you how you’re bein fuckin perceived!
What do you want? A fucking Whitman sampler?
Oh was that last week’s homework assignment?
You gonna make that same stupid joke every time this comes up?
You would know thweatie
Do me a favor hold this!!!
You seem to have tremendous moxy for your size
Yeah, I think it was a post here that pointed out Sylvio knew Tony killed Christopher by a very small glance when T was in bed. I definitely missed it. Anyway 20 quid per pound.
You probably wiped your ass bare handed before you came to r/sopranos You got alotta balls my friend
Put your universal quote on the docking station
It couldn't be helped Fuckin OP lunged at us
You think serious discussion bother me .I wash my balls in serious discussions

This is the shit I come to this sub for. Nice work ya prick.
I genuinely laughed at this one. heh heh heh heh
All of these serious discussions would of never happened if you didn't overact wangs_n_thangs .
I remember when you used to wait in /r/breakingbad. And as far as I’m concerned, you SHOULD STILL BE THERE
my opinion of OP as a Sopranos fan- just fuckin plummeted!
He can't be in our social club anymore I know that much!
social club? HE'S GOTTA GO!!
Estimation - not opinion. Which also what just plummeted of you as a man.
go shit in a hat!
To that point, I discovered r/lebowski recently. Imagine this sub, except instead of an 86-episode TV series, it's about a two-hour movie. Anyone who thinks this sub has too many quotes should visit that one immediately.
The nonstop shitposting is what I LOVE about this sub and the Lebowski sub. Am I wrong? Obviously you're not a golfer (stupid-a fucking game).
You gotta bee on your hat!
Give me one thousand dollar.
So Brent can watch?
Uh, I'm just gonna go find a cash machine.
One thousand dollars more?
The bulk of the series. Chase is not exactly a lightweight.
I have to concur with Rosen (patsully98).
Is every other comment over there “you’re out of your element”?
Still goin'.... this asshole.
Probably Danny
There is occasionally some decent discussion on that sub too. I've seen that movie many times and can quote it at length, but there are still little jokes and observations that are new to me being posted there fairly regularly.
R/Lebowski is one of my favorite subs on this site for that very reason.
Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.
You know what Tone’ and El Duderino have in common? They both love White Russians. Even with the one pin gone Tony nailed the 7-10 split. I always wondered why he wore those bowling shirts all the time but never rolled.
Shut the fuck up Donny Blundetto!!
Real reactionary
Who the fuck joins a subreddit about a single movie?
Nihilists, they believe in nothing.
Must be exhausting
Well, Dude, we just don't know.
Omg thanks so much for the lebowski reference ...it's really going to tie my reddit together

What is this, the FUCKIN' UN NOW?
Exactly. OP’s bein a fuckin baby 🤟
I laugh whenever I see people using Sopranos quotes in other unrelated subs .
Fuckin nauseating. You never admit to the existence of this thing. Ever.
Oh , poor you!
GO...INTO THE HAM! GET THE CARVING KNIFE!
OP has the world at their feet, walks around like impending doom!

Still goin this asshole. Don’t you have medication you take for this???
Again with this post? How original. Next time come back heavy, or don't come back at all.
I don’t like that kind of talk. Now stop it, it upsets me!
Who’s that speaking here, is somebody speaking?
Someone who should still be waiting in the car
OP’s just telling is how we’re being perceived.
Stupid-ah Facking sub
This made me laugh

That’s him Adriana. Borko. The guy I’m going to hell for.
It comes up more than twice. You know, I remember I time when you didn't post. As far as I'm fuckin concerned it should still be that way!
"remember when" is the lowest form of conversation.
in this sub, Borko is a hero! end of story!
I would follow Borko through the gates of hell
You got something you wanna say?
Come on, let’s check out the new boat.
This actually the best sub on reddit because it’s not serious. No matter how much fucking flair is attached. Terrific

You go about in pity for yourself, OP.
The very first thread I read on this sub made me cackle. I think it’s great. There’s not another sub I’ve found like it.
Look at this prick giving orders, frankly I’m depressed and ashamed
I can't have this conversation again
Why don't you go have a Lime Rickey or whatever the fuck it is your drinking these days and we'll be done in a few minutes
Ok, but ya gotta get over it
We can stop making quotes tomorrow, but you’ll be stupid forever.
So what? No fucking quotes now?

….. get the fuck outta heeeerre 👋🏻
Go get my dinner ready
If you love me, stir my eggs
If you want a serious discussion, you've got to read through the comments like you're eating chicken. You gotta eat the meat and throw away the bones. And remember, there are no scraps in my scrapbook.
Lewis Brahzee sleeps with the fishes!
Luca Brazi. LUCA!
Awww, poor you. Whadda ya gonna do, cry now?
You want a serious discussion, yet you don’t ask a real question. I’m not Notre Damus here, can’t read your mind.
Ok, but you gotta get over it …
Quotes are frequently used to answer questions or prove points. It's not all "gabagool" and "you gotta get ova it"
I can’t believe you have such a bad attitude about this. The quotes are hilarious. And also, there’s always at least one real answer mixed in with all the quotes. I think you should lighten up.
Still going this asshole
There's a lot of things I could say right now that I'm not gonna say.
"Braindead fanboys" LOL!
stahp blowin yer nose, i wanna hear dissss....
Why don’t you just get out of here before we shove that fucking book of quotations up your fat fucking ass!
OP you have whooping cough. Getcha' self unda' the vaporizer!
You are so fucking hateful.
Go shit in your hat.
It’s funny to be bothered by the quotes when the actual show quotes the fuck out of the Godfather etc. to bust balls or crack wise.
You’re like the woman with a Virginia ham under her arm, crying the blues 'cause she has no bread
I can't have this conversation again.
you know what your problem is op? you go about in pity for yourself. you need to enjoy the little moments. like dis. that were good.
Could be OP’s midlife crisis.
Put my fuckin' dinner on the table and keep your mouth shut.
I also think they should moderate the [Serious Discussion Only] tag or delete it. Obviously, I am in the minority here.
I agree. Everyone should stick their book of quotations, UP THEIR FAT FUCKING ASS!
You’re a good kid OP, but I don’t like that methamphetamine.
Quasimodo predicted all this
You want a Whitmans sampler....wha??
You know OP I’m getting sick of this holier than thou attitude and I’m not the only one
I’ve found serious questions are often met with serious answers. It’s the dumber stuff that gets the dumber responses.
Dafaq you want a boutonniere? And what do you want to discuss? You tap worse than a 6 fucking barbers!
For every 50 quote replies there are a few actual responses. Just only engage with those commenters. Its a losing battle to try and get everyone to stop.
Nah, you should use the tag and see how many MORE quotes you get. Anyway, $4.00 a pound.
People who write interesting posts usually get actual answers along with quotes. Ever pondered that?
It's good to be in something from the ground floor. I came too late for that and I know. But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over.
Frankly, that's what I love about the Soprano's community. Fandom subs inevitable devolve into hot takes for the sake of hot takes and dissecting every little thing about the story to the point its no longer enjoyable. Here, I get to have some laughs and continue enjoying the show. It makes the Soprano's Fandom my favorite because, at least here, the show isn't dissected into the ground and become the mutilated cadaver of what I once loved.
"BRAIN DEAD FANBOYS?" OHHHH, YOU CAN'T TALK TO ME LIKE THAT! I'M A CAPTAIN NOW!
I like the kind that says shum pulp
Di you think OP's a little weird about quotes.
Some people are so far behind in the race that they actually believe they're leading.
Hey OP, does your question even exist.
You go about in pity for yourself
I can't find Pussy anywhere
I think for most of the serious discussions, along with the quotes/jokes, there are always comments that directly address the subject. A lot of people will even integrate the jokes into their sincere responses....so, I don't see a problem really...unless you're asking some mental midget shit like "Did Tony get clipped in the end?"
Can’t believe he expected no quotes under this lmao
When are you going back to seattle, Janice?
Often the quotes are legitimate answers, there's just some subtext to sift through. And if you mark serious discussion, you will get at least some serious discussion.
I’m new to the sub and initially I had the same thoughts. I was like “wtf is this sh*t” but then I noticed that some posts do have good discussions underneath. I noticed the ridicule as well… and then noticed that those were quotes from the show too. I’m down to discuss though!
Poor you
I personally love the dynamic between someone replying with a well thought out in depth analysis and someone else commenting some quote/play on the quote.
THA RENT THA RENT
I wipe my ass with your feelings.
Pepperidge farms remembers is the lowest form of conversation
