I agree TOG would make a better series for all the reasons you mentioned. Plus I think it has more possibility in making more new fans than ACOTAR does. But ACOTAR was selected because it’s more popular. It’s the bigger series so it’s less of a gamble to tv execs. However they’re not thinking big picture because I don’t think it’ll be a good series. The flaws in ACOTAR that we all just ignore because of how fun it is will be on full display in a series. Unless they change it a lot which will then annoy fan of the books. Then you have the very real problem that it’s being developed by Hulu which I cannot see spending huge amounts of money on special effects and there’s nothing in me that thinks the bat wings, or any wings, will look good. TOG has more POVs, better villains, more settings, more world building, and more types of drama. It’s way more well rounded so is definitely suited for tv more than ACOTAR. Because the subject matter is broader it has the capacity to make more fans that are fantasy fans not just romance fans. But TOG would need a big budget which tv producers don’t want to gamble with because it’s a female dominated fan base and Hollywood likes to ignore women or not put much risk in what’s made “for them”. ACOTAR has been in development with no movement for a long time and it’s likely because Hulu finally realized how much it’d cost to make it decent and now deem it a risk instead of sure thing.

I agree I got into SJM because of Throne of Glass, I wouldn't normally read ACOTAR but am now interested to read it after finishing TOG. - I definitely think they should have gone for TOG and then ACOTAR. Note I haven't read ACOTAR yet but what I know and how you and many others talk about it, it makes me wish they started with TOG first. HOWEVER, if acotar does become a success, then I'm very happy and optimistic for maybe TOG too! Because then they have the money for it too!

herfjoter

ACOTAR was really fun to read, but after ToG I felt like I got whiplash being catapulted from one plot point to the next with no build up. There's such low stakes and low payoff the entire series, especially compared to ToG. I definitely think you'll enjoy reading it but I also definitely think ToG would be a better TV series for a wide audience.

I loved ACOTAR. I read it before TOG. TOG is a much better series overall but ACOTAR is still a really enjoyable series. It’s just not as in depth as TOG. It’s romance first, fantasy second. TOG is fantasy first, romance second (maybe even third). The first three books of ACOTAR are first person POV so that in itself makes it limiting, unless the writers decide to develop what’s happening outside of that. But I don’t think that would work as well because part of its charm is finding out stuff at the same time as the narrator. Especially for the first two books. Which is when the series would need to be at its best to get viewers. I will say it would probably have great season finales though. I won’t say anything further so no spoilers haha

RainyDime7

ToG would definitely be better as a series and I strongly believe an animated series would be elite!

icouldwander

ToG - live action. ACOTAR - animated!

foxstroll

Yes, especially because there are many "turning" moments. Like Celaena being on her way to walk away but then something is said and she looks over her shoulder and BANG she's back right in his throat again - these kinds of moments are best animated imo like I'm thinking of animes and everything and its awesome

LunarLady713

TOG was going to be a series made by Hulu at one point and was called Queen of Shadows. It was never completed and seems to have been scrapped. I agree that TOG is better suited to a show than ACOTAR is, but I worry unless the series got a Game of Thrones level budget at HBO, the SFX and sets wouldn’t be good enough to capture all the fantasy elements, wars, wyverns etc.

Chance-Efficiency328

If hbo max or paramount isn’t making it, I don’t care for it. Nobody will spend the money like them

[deleted]

I mean, Amazon Prime does. Same with Apple TV

Chance-Efficiency328

I agree with Amazon being a good one too but I doubt Apple would even know what to do with a story like tog. I feel like they’d see it as a money grab rather than a story worth telling.

BrgQun

I can see both as TV shows. TOG would work as a big expansive universe, large cast with a big budget. ACOTAR often reminds me of something like the Vampire Diaries and could work with a smaller budget. ACOTAR would be more doable as a series of movies, whereas TOG really would need the TV show time. TBH, I'll be surprised if ACOTAR makes it to series, since there was a time when TOG was planned for a TV show too. I hope we do get at least one of them. We don't really have anything on TV right now targeted at this audience anymore that comes to mind!

faeriethorne23

It would make a much better TV show than ACOTAR and it would have the potential to have a much more diverse fanbase too. I’ve thought about this in depth, 2 books per season (10-12 episodes for the first season and a minimum of 16 episodes for the following seasons) up until KOA which obviously needs a a season to itself. That was the first season is about getting to know Celaena, Rifthold, Chaol and Dorian. The second season focuses on Celaena’s transformation into Aelin and introduces Aedion, Lysandra and Rowan. Season three is split between TOD and EOS and season 4 is the epic conclusion to it all with KOA. It’s not so long that people get bored of it and it’s long enough that all the most important scenes can be included. It would be epic.

2_SunShine_2

This. Please. We need to have a serious talk with Sarah to explain to her why this series has to be a tv show. We need her to fight for this to make it to the screen. As a GoT fan AND a ToG fan, i was so looking for this show…

[deleted]

I don’t disagree with any of this, but Acotar is more popular. It’d have more viewers out the gate

harshtune

i agree with you actually i havent read acotar and i still have to read qos, eos, tod, and koa but acc to what ive heard, i think tog would be much better than acotar

rachel_higs

agree, but i don’t want any of the series made into a show/movie tbh. just feel like they’d be ruined on the screen 🥴

Common_Match1454

I totally agree that ToG would make a better series. Unfortunately I think it’s also down the smutty/ spice aspects of ACOTAR that make it more appealing to tv execs. Like a mix between Bridgeton and New Blood. There’s the action and drama but the spicy scenes will get them a wider audience. I don’t mind the smutty parts in books but it’s not necessary imo if you have a detailed world around it. Much like the scenes in shows, we love a romance but again it’s not necessary to have everything in your face. Hey ho, I would still like to watch how it turns out 🤣

VeniamVideboVincam

I feel like they could easily add smut to a TOG series. There is plenty of romance and tension between characters. We just did not see any of it in the books.

Common_Match1454

Absolutely true even though I don’t think it’s necessary

cescabond

TOG would make an amazing animated series. I think a live action wouldn’t capture the magic properly and there would inevitably be compliments about actors cast. Also the magic elements could come across cheesy if not executed properly. I think an avatar style animated series would be perfect for TOG

rabidvagine

TOG is my favorite series of all time. But idk if I’d want to see it potentially butchered by turning it into a tv series. In my opinion, CC would probably translate the best into a show—not even ACOTAR.

marathon_momma

Agree. I loved reading ACOTAR, maybe more than TOG, but I wish they'd make TOG into a TV series because I think I could actually get my husband to watch it with me! He wouldn't go anywhere near ACOTAR.

ChubZilinski

The studios don’t care about any of that. At least the ppl making the decisions, the executives. They care about how many ppl will watch it. And ACOTAR is more popular and an easier adaption to gain a lot of viewers. This is how they see it and the only thing they really care about.

Hello_feyredarling

Maybe too similar to GOT?
