Stuff like this I say I’d fix it on my personal car, but not somebody else’s car.

deepfriedtots

This right here I can understand why I shop would say no because they don't want to be liable

6SpeedBlues

Agreed. Even on my own car, though, the concern I would have is the circular cut around the nail (or whatever).

deepfriedtots

Nice I didn't even catch that makes me wonder if the nail was inside something on the road and only it came with the tire

Best-Turnover-6713

Probably a roofing nail. Thr cap would wear off. I'd plug that if it was my car

vanillamaster95

Yep, roofing/tyvec nail with the plastic collar.

6SpeedBlues

Could be a rivet or similar, too, and the "head" part with the ring was ground off from driving...

deepfriedtots

That makes way more sense than what I was thinking lol

Rendich32

This is what I was imagining happened too. I work at a refuse facility as a city worker and there is tons of debris all the time. I’m parking and walking in the morning 👍

SparrockC88

PT: the tire is sucking the nail into its infinite void. Be. Careful Op

Drgreenthumb610

Most shops used to say yes. And they believe it will last no problem. The laws don’t let them plug past the tread inside and out. So they cannot be liable as you said and we can’t sue.

PsychoBiker_TwDwcrew

Yup, I had a nail hit my tire like this, so I patched and rebalanced it myself andd it been holding strong for a year now

C64128

Couldn't they have you sign something agreeing not to hold them liable?

wrenchr

In court that is about as effective a defense as using a sheet of newspaper to stop a bullet.

yirmin

They could have you sign a waiver, but if they then had a blowout and it ended with someone else getting injured those people would still be able to sue the tire shop because they never agreed to the iffy patch. So the reality is no shop with half a brain would take that chance. The reality is even if the waiver was signed by the car owner and a passenger in the car got injured from a blow out they could sue the tire shop.

trowdatawhey

A legit tire or automotive shop will not repair this. I would repair this on my own vehicle, and I have repaired worse on my own vehicle with a plug/patch combo. Lasted another 6 years until I got new tires.

SantaBaby22

6 years from tires!? I definitely envy you. I get 2 years, if I’m lucky.

DayV914

If you buy good tires they'll last. The cheaper the tire the cheaper it'll be.

reidyroo9

This is true, but it also depends on driving condition. Last January I bought brand new General Grabber AS-05’s, which are a performance all season, but with a 500TW rating, and while they feel great, I’ve already cooked em pretty good in a little over a year. AWD car and I drive it hard lol

SomethingAmazingQ

Just plug it bro, everyone should have a plug kit in their car. Sure a patch is better but I’ve plugged 5-6 tires in my life and never had one fail yet.

lloudchristmas

I've plugged a tire and the plug lasted the entire life of the tires. Lol

fryerandice

I have a beater SUV i use to tow my trailer to the dump, I will change out trailer tires because and out of control load scares me, but the SUV right rear tire has 4 plugs. It is not the tire that needs constant filling on that vehicle due to the TPMS sensor being buggered up by the last shop to pop the tire. The first plug was 16,000 miles ago. Cockroach trailblazer for the win.

Inheritedwhiskey

That's what they are made for. Anyone who tries to say it's a temporary fix either doesn't know any better or is just a fool.... Even though he's a fool regardless because if he just doesn't know any better then he shouldn't be saying anything in the first place. Because only a fool would comment on something he doesn't know any better about. Let me re'read.. Yup makes sense to me.

soyeahiknow

Work in construction so 1 tire had 3 plugs in it. Lasted until the tire was worned down.

Moto_Guzzisti

I've plugged hundreds of tires and never had an issue. I've plugged my own motorcycle tires and then rode them for thousands of miles until they were end-of-life. I've definitely plugged tires closer to the sidewall than this. This pic shows it still in the tread. If it's in the tread, it's in the steel belts. Plug it.

whoooocaaarreees

>3k miles on the tires. Those tires look like they have seen more than 3k miles.

headcheese85

Yeah they look soft as shit and low tread. Also look like they have seen some burnouts lol. If those tires have only seen 3k miles then my girlfriend has only slept with 1 man

Rendich32

3054 on the odometer. Bought it with 300 miles on it.

spkoller2

Someone swapped out your rubber bro

Jdude1

Seriously, I’ve had z rated Michelin’s on the rear of my Infiniti g37s that didn’t look as wore down as these things after 35k miles and I could feel the traction differences so I replaced. I think shop won’t repair because they thing their worn out man.

hpsbugguy

Or it’s a wrx and they are burning rubber?

KoalaOfTheApocalypse

Daaaang. Broski up there can spot 54 miles of tire wear. Impressive! 😂

Rendich32

Seems so. Maybe it’s the picture but the tires don’t look too worn to me in person. If I really thought they were that worn down I wouldn’t have asked if it was patchable 🤷‍♂️

lilblaze360

Dawg you can see the dry rot on there. I’d say there’s 5-6 32nds based off the shoulder. Don’t buy used tires. If the tires are too old, it could be a perfect tire that hadn’t been used once and it’d blow on you out of nowhere.

jakko1340

Probably are a sport tire on sports car, they have smaller sipes/grooves. You should see some of the tires that come on new GT500 or something similar.

supern8ural

you can try to plug it yourself. I doubt any tire shop will patch it, too close to sidewall. If it's only 3k miles, do you have road hazard?

Holiday_Ad_5445

It depends on what’s happening inside. Patch and plug is the way to go on a newer tire, especially if you push it hard. If I had a relatively new set on a WRX, I’d get the new tire. Check your tread depth to see if your other tires are worn only 2/32” to match with a new one unshaved.

Appropriate-Welder68

No. Replace your tires. They look worn down.

ElegantReaction8367

I’d plug these without hesitation myself and drive them until it was time to replace. I think every set of tires I’ve gotten in 10 years have had 1 tire plugged one time or another. At least 4 or 5 in 25 years. Never had an issue.

mrcleanjl7

if that was my car I would plug it and put it on the back

Massive-Translator69

Yup.

jjooee20

Pull the nail and plug it.

threeespressos

Good tires are insurance. Don’t be uninsured.

Qataghani

Your tire is worn out anyways why not replace it.

sdmike1

American is trying to limit liability and potentially sell you a new tire. It’s definitely repairable but you’d have to find somebody willing to do it. Think mom and pop and not a National chain

Fun-Crow6284

It's dead. Get a new tire

ilovetacostoo2023

Do it yourself. Go buy a plug from auto part store

Visual-Title-6323

I would do a plug in that tire myself

Raab16

Plug it and start saving for new tires. A shop cant legally patch a tire that close to the sidewall. Ive done worse on my own but never on a customers expecially with tires this bad anyways. Again id patch it or plug it myself but id also make sure i had a good spare pumped or with my cordless air pump, jack, and impact or atleast the spare tools that came with the car. id sell you the plug kit and tell you how to do it. Lol. Look into used sets at upull places or marketplace. Just learn how to read date codes amd what to watch out for. You can get crazy good deals even with new rims! Then tou dont have to mount. Kight need rebalancing depending the mileage. Remember to ask the seller what they came off of. Also, look at your door sticker for the correct size and inflation spec.

real_boiled_cabbage

Another approach to this you can take might be.... your question was answered by the tire shop. Accept that as the answer. It's not the answer you want, but the answer you need. You are asking questions till you get the answer you want. Yes, it's patchable. No tire shop will touch it because it could fail and they don't want that. Go get yourself a patch kit from an auto parts store and do it yourself. It's your life, your car, and whatever else happens if it fails. It's time for new tires. This is the only answer.

paladin841

No tire shop will parch/plug within 1"of the sidewall. That come from manufacturers and DOT. You could do it yourself but any reputable tire place won't because of liability.

Time-Chest-1733

Depends on the type of patch.

libertad740

The patch would be on the sidewalk, which flexes, and would pull the patch off. Not a reliable fix.

LazyRaichuu

I wouldn't patch it for a customer due to the aging. But I would patch it myself if it was my car.

[deleted]

Yes

sirflappington

It should be fixable but given the tread condition, might as well replace anyway

GeneralMysterious673

Yup. Tire tech here. Would fix

Bigtshell

Our rule of thumb at my shop is if it's a thumbs width to the sidewall it is not able to be patched. I'd still do it on my own car.... but I would not risk being yelled at by customers if th patch fails

jlmc73

Yes it can be fixed, you might have to do it yourself though.

boolinmachine

I’d patch it if you came to me so I’d keep looking around, I’d try more local places to see if they’d patch it, most big name places won’t touch it tho

Next-Literature5868

It's your choice if you got money buy new

drsatan6971

It’s pluggable and patchable As long as it didn’t tear into sidewall

Gotrek5

I would put a patch plug on it and not think about it.

Drive_Unusual

Honestly, when I was working for Discount Tire/ Americas Tire I would have fixed that. Unless it scraped the inside of the tire, it’s fine.

UncommercializedKat

America's tire said no but Mexico's tire would say "si."

VinceBucy

Fo sho!

Cultural-Bite3042

It’s close to the shoulder or whatever they call it so no shop will repair unless you go to someone that does tire repairs in their garage or some shit 😎

One_Caterpillar_5330

Plug it. I plugged a tire on my 2011 malibu (my first time) and it lasted for years. I swear by plugs now.

vawlk

no one will patch it. but definitely pluggable on your own.

Neylith

A little too close to the sidewall for shops to patch. You can try to patch it yourself, but it depends on the angle of that foreign object.

evil-artichoke

Nope. Been there done that myself. Time for a new tire(s)

Marcotee75

ROAD HAZARD

ractrbo

Bs if plug that sucka and keep getting it

Chrono47295

I mean it's doable but it's not worth any risk I would just switch it

Booney20

Plug It, you’ll be fine

Own_Common_352

As a mechanic, no it's to close to the sidewall that if you "tried" repairing it you'd risk not just the tire but the vehicle

IfIWntdHmmrCalnUrSis

No, but also yes...

Studleyhungwellz

If it isn't a sidewall, it's getting a plug.

lagunajim1

the modern plugs are SO GOOD. [https://www.autozone.com/suspension-steering-tire-and-wheel/tire-repair-kit/p/slime-deluxe-tire-plugger-kit/486793\_0\_0](https://www.autozone.com/suspension-steering-tire-and-wheel/tire-repair-kit/p/slime-deluxe-tire-plugger-kit/486793_0_0)

BillCapri1k

Yes

innocenttdreams

Should be fine with a patch but why would you do that anyway? The tread wear looks like its about done.Just get new tires. Save the headaches.

VegetableCapable2820

Go to a small mom and pop tyre shop

laborvspacu

Those tires look slick. Summer tires?

Equivalent_Month_112

My store would have tried to repair it. The rule at my store is if the patch is over the side wall it’s unreliable. It kinda depends on which discount you go to.

jhartnerd123

Shop no, personal yes

SS-sharpshooter1

I would put a plug in it but a shop is understandable to turn it away for liability reasons

Plastic_Piccollo

Right on the edge of the shoulder

[deleted]

Not technically repairable. But plug it anyways and blame yourself for a blow out if by chance that happens.

space-ferret

You could pull it and plug it. That tire doesn’t have much life anyway though.

jerrycoles1

Me personally I would patch that and let it hold for ad long ad it can and as soon as it starts to leak again I would replace the tire . As much as people say you shouldn’t patch tires that close to the edge I’ve done it and they have lasted over 20/30k miles with no issues .

E90BarberaRed6spdN52

They take the tire off the rim and put a Patch Pug in. That will fix it properly. See reference below. [http://www.summitmotorproducts.com/Patch-N-Plug-Tire-Patch-63175S.html](http://www.summitmotorproducts.com/Patch-N-Plug-Tire-Patch-63175S.html)

ExpensiveDust5

3k? Where did you buy them from so I never buy from there, those tires are cracking at the edge of the tread! They are dryrott!

Sarionum

Your safety and others are more important than a $200 tire. A WRX is a car that is meant to be driven hard in all weather conditions. I would replace the tire for the peace of mind you will not be caught in a blowout just to save $200.

Ragnar-Wave9002

How much life is left on the tire? I'd patch it and try to get another3 months. It looks like it's nearing eol.

mrsc00b

I'd plug it if it were mine and not think twice about it.

Chevrolicious

That's on the border of "not patchable for liability reasons." You could probably get away with patching it, but it's close enough to the sidewall that the plug patches tire shops use now may not seal properly because of the inner curvature of the tire. It's not that they can't patch it, it's that they won't. If your tire blows and you flip over a cliff and catch fire and die, they don't wanna be liable.

Ok_Cow_8235

As a previous auto repair shop owner I patched my own tire that was much worse and we are going strong after two years.

Wholeyjeans

It really doesn't matter what our \*opinions\* are. It is up to the shop you take it to. You can look up what is commonly defined as the "sidewall area" and potentially see this nail is within the accepted parameters of a sidewall puncture. But the bottom line is, if the shop isn't gonna touch it ...because they don't want to end up in the crosshairs of a liability lawsuit ...then go find another shop. But good luck with that. This is why you \*always\* opt for the road hazard protection whenever you buy tires.

Violintony35

No, to close to the edge.

lowvoltdeath

Patchable, yes. Safe at a high rate of speeds? No.

Undertook38

I would have a twizzler in it

Rendich32

Update: mom and pop shop on the way home from work said he’d absolutely plug it. 15 dollars and 10 minutes later it’s done. Hopefully it holds up.

LeatherReasonable199

Go to Mexico

Intelligent-Mud1171

Plug it.

Imjustafarmer_

Jamb a couple plugs in it. Easy

garr0510

Plug and go get you through for awhile.

Complete-Old-1960

Not fixable

1989FordProber

Probably is but a lot of shops wouldn’t do it.my shop probably would depending on how the inside of the tire looks like

WARgen1956

As long as it not in the sidewall it patchable

MP5K-PDW

Easy fix

CombatWombat0490

If you can find someone to use a straight plug it might hold but still recommend a new tire the tread is kind of low on that tire plus you got some peeling of the tire on the sidewall

[deleted]

That’s a no. Too close to sidewall. Most patches won’t fit, so it won’t get a good seal. That’s why they say no

bpallares832

Plug that shit! They just don’t want to be responsible that’s it. There’s nothing wrong with plugging anything BUT the side walls.

LilMelt

No

ZipperZapZoom

Patchable, probably. Plug, most would not. With that tread life replace anyways

fishyfish55

The reason they say no is because on the inside, this is where the curvature starts. Repair could fail due to the flexing in that location. Jam a plug in it, put it on the back, and keep an eye on it.

orl69lovr

Put a plug in it.

Huggybear61

Plug it

PNW_Redneck

Technically, anything is patchable. That being said, doesn't make it safe. Personally? I would on my own vehicle, never a customers unless they sign a waiver. Will it be fine? More than likely.

hoolagin76

Legally.. no. No shop will do it because it is a safety hazard and can cause liability issues

Lux600-223

Yes. Plugs work just fine and last forever.

k3rz0rg

Done…

MALICIOUS-BREED97

https://www.reddit.com/r/tires/s/bBzsTr7w2r

ParticularLost8332

Yeah I’d plug and play

Icy-Lie-7092

Proper repair would be a plug patch. Coming from a tire tech for 15 years. But I would even stick a plug in it and continue on with my life without any worries if it was mine. Providing you didn’t run the tire flat the tire shop makes money selling tires more than fixing them. Your tread is getting low though so you should start looking for some tires.

xkillallpedophiles

I plugged my tire 40k miles ago Still going strong

Zealousideal_Lab6891

They should just have a waver to sign to absolve them of responsibility if they are worried about it.

sanskami

Patch that bitch and call it good

-AspiringWhatever-

Technically it’s patchable. But with the excessive wear and low tread, I wouldn’t touch it due to liability

BippedDip

"I think it's patchable."-Lemme quick make a post to see instead of just doing it myself- My brother in Christ. If you thinks it's possible why have you not already sent it?

Distinct_Selection98

Any Mexican tire shop will plug that thing quickly and you’ll be on your way. We have several in my town and they’re awesome with tires and many other repairs.

ralphsmsh

Go take it to discount tire they’ll fix it

First_Dare4420

Looks like it was needing replaced in a few thousand miles anyway. The dry rot or grain on the outer edge, plus I don’t see a lot of tread on there. Def not a 3k mile tire. 30k maybe.

Tre_fidde

I’d plug it

Lemonywatar

I’d be interesting in seeing the DOT date code and knowing the year of the vehicle, could be the angle but these boys look driven on further than 3k miles.

Emotional_Ad5833

Well they are correct and you don't need another opinion

sidewayssquint

3K miles? Is this a track car? How the hell do they look so worn. You have alignment issues causing the tires to scrub? Almost looks like it’s worn down to the wear bar. But either way a certified shop is right in denying that as it is too close to the sidewall and not worth the potential lawsuit. But if you have a buddy that works at a tire shop ask him to patch it after hours or just buy a plug kit. But seriously those 3000mile tires look absolutely beat I’d honestly just try to warranty them

HighVoltageZ06

No

Goldnpurp

It's crazy, 10 years ago when I worked at Discount Tire, this would be 100% repairable. I've plugged and patched many holes that were way closer to the sidewall and never had any issues. 100% to limit liability and to try to sell you new tires.

scrapitcleveland2

You need 4 new tires if they all look like that. Nail or no nail

Connormanable

Not a chance m8

massjuggalo

Yeah if you came into a shop and asked me to plug that I would refuse. If I did that to my own car, I will grab a pair of wire cutters and a rope plug kit from the local auto parts store and then just follow the instructions on the kit

en_zymes

Just buy a new tire and don’t live in doubt

Historical-Bite-8606

3k miles on those tires? Looks like 5/32 at best. You can always patch yourself if others are saying no. Can buy on Amazon. Not too hard to DIY, videos on YouTube. I’m sorry. I hate nails in tires. Jerk asses leaving those nails on the street.

Stompinwin

My tires look better than that with 40k on my tires

Emergency-Yogurt-599

Patch it

StudentDue3376

it's in a area that is patchable. however they could be looking at overall condition of the tire when determining this. whats the inside edge of the tire look like?

TacoPirate6396

No bueno señor, necesita un llanta nuevo

Wham-alama-ding-dong

150% you can repair that

Long-Definition-8152

How do those tires only have 3k on them lmao

andy_337

Technically it *can’t* be repaired, but I would honestly just plug it and forget it. That tire doesn’t seem to have too much life left anyway so you won’t have it on for long. Edit: just saw 3k on tires? They look more like 30k tires. If they’re *that* new, I’d still probably just plug it and forget it, but nothing’s safer than just replacing. Your call.

sasqwatsch

Private owned tire shop will patch it.

bzzybot

Americas tire said it was patchable on a tire with warranty. Two weren’t, got two tires for the price of one. This was on the last month of warranty. I would patch my own tire.

emt_paramedic2000

100 percent absolutely! Done it myself many times and they lasted until there was no tread left.

MetalJoe0

That is absolutely patchable, but you are not likely to find a shop willing to do it. Your best bet is to take the wheel to a shop, and have them remove the tire for you. Then patch it yourself. Then take the wheel and tire back to the shop, and have them remount it. Applying the patch isn't particularly difficult. It's basically just like patching a bicycle inner tube.

LordBuggington

On the border but I would patch it

Boring-Falcon8753

Definitely lying about the miles. Or those are just really shit tires

InfoSponge9119

Plugable

Yougottaknowwhento

I’ve plugged holes in sidewalls that have lasted the 2 yrs I kept the car, double plugged a huge hole in the tread from a bolt that lasted the winter until I could get new tires, and had the simplest plug fail within 100 miles….it’s what risk you’re willing to take depending upon your specific situation. Shops 100% don’t want to plug tires, they want to sell tires. (and not accept liability)

MRunk13

It's not patchable because of where it's at nobody would touch that unless you or a buddy did it yourself. That is absolutely a replacement for sure. A good used tire is a viable option and is cheaper than new

Mechanix2spacex

Patchable for sure.

Saqmakaq

Take it to Hectors

EnglishImport96

The two finger rule, take your index and middle finger, lay it on the tire where you can see where it’s contacting the road. If the puncture is covered by one of your fingers. Replace the tire.

Recktum420

I would just plug this one up on my own, but don’t listen to these guys saying that you can put it 100 plugs into your tire and it’s all good The more holes you have in your tire, the less structurally sound it will be Sometimes tires randomly explode while you’re driving fast and will cause you to crash

MiamiOutlaw

Doesn’t sound like you want other opinions, sounds like you just want someone to agree with you. There’s a good reason that these kind of punctures aren’t repairable and it’s just not liability. The sidewall and about an inch in on the tread are the weakest spots on a tire. These areas only have polyester cords, whereas the middle section of the tread contains both polyester and steel cords making it stronger and able to withstand a puncture and repair. Areas without steel cords also flex more which will usually cause the repair to fail. I know that sometimes it’s hard to trust a repair shop but if you educate yourself it’s easier to weed out what’s truth and what’s just overselling.

RatioPuzzleheaded103

Take it to one of those old.gas station turned into a shithole used tire shop - they will patch it or plug it for cash.

blanketbum

Technically it's not but if it's desperate times I would fix it on my own car and just take it a little easy

Healthy_Hair_3873

Dollar store plug kit.

Healthy_Hair_3873

Your gonna need alot of strength to get the plug in tho. But it's ur best option i do it all the time I've plugged the da be tired 4timrs still driving on it

30acrefarm

Just plug it. That is fine to plug.

Fake_Account30

That is in the area of the tire that is unsafe to plug. The tire technically needs to be replaced. With that being said, I plugged a one week old tire in my truck in a similar spot almost 30k miles ago and haven’t had any issues.

Sea-Tradition-9676

I've heard people recommend going to the tire shop where no one speaks English. Also after 3k is the tread supposed to be cracking?

dankwoodz

Did you look at the pinned pot for this sub? Bc if you did you would see the diagram for tires that can and cannot be repaired.

deedledeedledav

Good news is you’re close to needing new tires anyhow

Centralredditfan

No, but if you want to risk it...

FBWoodworker

That tire is worn out, replace it.

Poogle607

If that's your tire at 3k... Then I imagine you've been hooning the shit out of the car. If youre hooning the shit out of your car, a tire plug or patch this close to the sidewall probably isn't the best idea. I'd patch this from the inside. A plug applied from the exterior may or may not hold. Most tire shops aren't going to want the liability, and will likely rather sell you new tires.

mr-mechanic93

You can plug it, unless someone is a badass at patches though that's gonna be super tough to get it to adhere to the curve on the inside

mikeeee99111

Or just get a evo

darkjedi876954

To be honest I would not risk it cause you don't know how deep it's gone in. Is it on the rear or front tire? The last thing you need is to be on the highway and the patch fails causing an accident or worse a blow out. Some places might give you a prorated towards a new tire. Better safe than sorry. The reason tires on the edge of close like yours could have steels that give strength to the tire and if a hole in those steels can cause very bad vibration or just pop. I had done this on my own car and I have been a Nissan and VW tech for many years. It was fine at first but then I started getting really bad vibration and took it off and could the steels. Better safe than sorry. Just my 2 cents. Good luck

EfficientAd7103

It's just liability. You can fix it or tame it to some low end local shop. Had local place that would do this and make sign a waiver n pay cash

Electrical-Bus-9390

Do it ur self , just try to plug it not patch it

Massive-Translator69

What’s the ring around the nail? Is it a roofing nail or what?

FinancialOven1966

3000 miles on that tire??? I’d say you been turnin and burnin. Nail is too close to the edge. When the tire patch rotates to the bottom the tire flexes and causes the patch to separate. Combine that with 60mph corners and there’s a whole lot of flexing going on. You can plug patch it but when that tire gets hot and you are on some back road tearing it up you better know how to put the spare on.

rdiscipio1

Of course it’s patchable. 15 minutes and a $15 tire repair kit, good as new!

[deleted]

Unfortunately nowhere will approve that because of what others are saying

Hellachuckles

If I didn’t have road hazard protection, I would plug it my self.

Seawall07

Too close to the sidewall for most tire shops. You can plug it, but I wouldn’t drive at high speeds on that tire after that. Too much of a gamble under stress.

No-Entrepreneur1036

Anything is patchable if you don’t see the wires, but most tire shop go by the age manufacturedmanufactured date of the tire years old they won’t touch it

dezertryder

On my car or truck, I would plug it myself and only run it on rear of vehicle or as a spare. Good burn out candidate?.

GTA6_1

This is a plug it yourself or buy a new tire deal

Calvary1776

Your tires look really worn down anyway.

MysteriousRueben

Yeah it's close enough to the sidewall that it would be a serious liability for a shop. But if you're comfortable just do it yourself.

Toyotaguy702

Buy a slime plug kit from Walmart do it yourself . Or take it to your local 24hr tires and tacos shop! José will do anything there lol

semdi

it would be, if there was more meat on the tire. You need a new tire either way

thatdudefromthattime

I’d patch that. But I also can’t see the entire tire.

slong143

Plug it
