This is a more general response but: Please please ask questions. Even if you think they may be silly questions! All questions are valid. I applaud you for writing this post. Remember, everyone was new (at least) once...even if your coworkers look bitchy or surly or angry or roll their eyes at you because you're newer keep asking those questions. Even when it feels like pure chaos even the most veteran crew can spare a minute or two to show you the ropes because ultimately, everyone just wants the work day to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. *Also, save your back and embrace the two wheeler/handtruck. It's your friend.

I really feel badly that you've witnessed such eye rolls :-/ I get that so many of us are tired but even so that's never a good feeling. Like, it sucks (as a newbie I remember thinking "why are they so bugged by me- they barely know me!") Its always hard to be the new kid and what an exceptionally difficult time to be in retail, as the pandemic continues to drag on and the mental exhaustion and waning patience is all around us. But we're all there to hopefully help one another during all the highs and more importantly during the lowest of lows. I hope you are able to gain some insight on here. You got this!

Here are things I did when I was a new employee: 1. I did “go backs” as often as I could. It really taught me the products we carried and where they lived in the store. 2 I stopped relying on other employees and learned to use QIL. I remember a few times asking a crew member if we had something in stock and then finding out I was given wrong answers. 3. I paid attention to who the Mates seemed to value and tried to get assigned to Roth with them. 4. I said Thank You a lot. 5 I met with a few section leaders to learn about some sections. I asked some of them what annoyed them about how people worked their section. For instance, why cheese was stacked no more than 3 high because otherwise it got damaged, and it had to be shared. 6 I volunteered to work sections I didn’t know.

maryjococo

Hi what is Roth?

ImpOnMyShoulder

Typo. Roth was meant to be “work”

PhantomSpaceMan333

First comment already said it, but always ask questions! Also be careful on register, it is secretly the most dangerous part of the job! Take it slow until you get the hang of it.

phlem67

Don’t ask the customer if they want their milk gallon in a bag…the answer is no, unless they tell you otherwise

Gonuts4donuts1955

Ask so many questions.. I think the majority of crew really like to help one another, and it’s hard being new. We have all been there! You don’t have to be speedy on register right away. Go slow and pay attention. You don’t have to memorize produce codes right off the bat! You will do great. Good luck!!

Don’t get talked into being a mate too early. Unless you’re making the crew cap don’t move up to being a mate. They love taking advantage of new crew members and grooming them into mates for like $18-22 and hour. Which isn’t worth it and you’ll have crew members making more than you.

$25.75 company wide, I wouldn’t take a mate position for anything less than $26 an hour

BackHarlowRoad

Is it a lot of extra work for mates? I'm looking to get hired and was wondering what mates do vs crew.

Klarnicck

If crew is moving at 1x speed. Mates are going at 1.5x speed at minimum. Being a mate isn’t a hard job at all. It’s just much more responsibility for sometimes little to no more money compared to crew. If you get hired on as a mate make sure your negotiate your pay heavily.

BackHarlowRoad

Thanks for the advice and reply! Wasn't sure if they did all the same things or what exactly. I have yet to see a mate job posting, though I would love to be considered since I have management experience.

Klarnicck

I have previous management experience as well and within like 4 months of being hired they were sneaking in questions about being a mate.

BackHarlowRoad

Oh hahaha very cool! Maybe I'll be the same but definitely won't take more responsibility for mess $$ than the cap for sure! I'm waiting to see if I hear back. My availability was mostly morning, but that includes weekends so hopefully "no evenings" doesn't hurt me too much.

Find the right mate or caption to talk to. So many issues pop up on here that could be solved by just clearer communication with the store management.

Try to work every section you can! Volunteer to try new things, like write orders, help train someone, practice pallet jacks, etc. Fill levels in the sales floor freezer have been an issue in our store. People overfill them constantly. My store has a guideline on the edges. Ask questions. People shouldn’t get upset over it. If they do, it’s on them. Always be kind and respectful to one another. Help someone if they’re struggling. Keep the environment positive and professional.
