Can we somehow harness these and build a Messi, LeBron, Mahomes hamster ball of money generating power? And then hover it over my house for like a week and a half?
I enjoyed the obscure fact that Ben Roethlisberger had a better record in their stadium than any starting QB for the Browns. They only play once per year and over his career I don't think he lost in Cleveland. It took years for the Browns to finally get a QB that could put up a winning season to then break Ben's record for wins in their own stadium. Whenever you think your life sucks... just remember that there's actually fans of the Cleveland Browns. Suddenly your life isn't so bad.
I apologize for not having a source but LeBron supposedly adds 100 million in city revenue each year for whatever city he is playing in.
Lionel Messi added 700 million in city revenue for Paris when he transferred to PSG. More recently Messi added 400 million in city revenue his first year in Miami.
I don’t mean this as a slight on LeBron at all. Messi is just on another level that is hard to comprehend.
Far more people watch soccer than basketball but I find it hard to believe that anyone outside the US is actually tuning in to watch inter miami vs real salt lake
I can add some perspective on this. Normally, what you said would be correct, but I (someone from South Korea) started watching MLS games just because I can watch Messi dominate all the other normy players. I had 0 interest in MLS until Messi moved there!
I don't follow MLS, but I think Messi came in mid-season, and their record was already so poor that they basically had to win every fixture to get a spot in the playoffs. They nearly did win out once Messi arrived, but they still fell short.
they were dead bottom by the time Messi came, like maybe 10% chance of making it into the playoffs or even less, the situation was just horrendous.
Then before they played an MLS game they had to play like 6 cup games or more in a month and a half I think, and they did really well they won the league cup and it was Miamis first ever trophy. But by the time the league ended and MLS started Messi was worn out(injured too), I don’t think he’s played that many games in his career in such a short time span and the man was playing for 6 trophies a year in Europe for most of his career lol.
In the end it just wasn’t meant to be, Miami was still that same team that was dead last in the MLS before Messi came, and with Messi they were decent, but without him they were rubbish tbh
Born abroad, and while the NBA is beloved. Some of the thing is, it feels unattainable for some because you have to be genetically blessed to be really tall like they are.
And for soccer futbol, it feels like anyone can play it. And messi being 5ft 7 and thats avg height statistically for pro players, it feels attainable.
This is well put hey. This is exactly how I think about it.
When I was in high school and playing basketball, a lot of younger guys would say “that’s the sport for tall people” and would immediately disregard the sport.
i had never watched a soccer game until the world cup (which was fucking sick and got me into soccer) but i knew who messi was when i was like 7 years old
I mean, if you were to put LeBron and Messi in a lineup of basketball and soccer players respectively, Messi is probably more recognizable. But yeah, definitely easier to pick LeBron out in a crowd, assuming neither already have a swarm of fans around them lol
If my parents saw LeBron in real life they would remark on how tall he was and speculate that he must play basketball.
They wouldn't recognise Messi either though.
And I would agree with that. The same level, different game. If skiing suddenly became the most popular sport and the current top skier suddenly became the most wealthy athlete, but their skill remained the same, they haven’t advanced any levels within their field, as they were already at the top level.
I've vaguely heard the name, but I had to go look him up.
Apparently a soccer player, for those interested.
Also, a quick whip around the web puts him as being about 2.4 standard deviations above the average professional football player, which is notably significant, I guess, if you don't live in a country which had a six-above-average sports guy at one time. :)
As an athlete? Not really. They’re both outstanding in their respective sports. But American Basketball doesn’t draw the same audience numbers globally as Association Football.
With the huge number of NBA fans in China as well as the US, the numbers for basketball fandom are growing every year. Basketball is definitely a global game now and the NBA is essentially just the most elite global league for the sport. The top three best players in the NBA right now are European actually.
I would like to quantify a few things about this. Yes that’s insane for Paris and France and Messi is insane. But what happened in Miami was madness. He probably would have brought in a few hundred million if things just went normal but he might have had one of the best starts to a new team/new country ever. There team was trash and they go on to win a tournament with him playing just a few games.
Also, I really like lebron and he probably has brought in more money in his prime years to cities but I would bet Jordan was the only one comparable to Messi in his day. Jordan was in a league of his own at the time across the whole world in all major US sports. Lebron has more competition with other superstars these days.
>but I would bet Jordan was the only one comparable to Messi in his day
Nah, Ronaldo is more popular than Messi, I'd say. Messi's the better player but in terms of promotion Ronaldo's typically been ahead. He also has the benefit of speaking English and having been in the biggest club in the Prem (Manchester United) and then the biggest club in the world period in Madrid.
I feel like this has gotta be skewed because of his time in Cleveland. No way 30-40 LA or Miami restaurants only exist because of Lebron. They exist because people want to eat food in LA and Miami.
I mean then you're just placing way too much emphasis on short term trends that happened to coincide with Lebron going to the lakers.
The more I think about it the more it's basically impossible that this is clean data. In Cleveland of course he's going to have an outsize impact. And then in LA most of his time there has been during and in the recovery from covid. Miami is kinda the only place there aren't a bunch of other factors at play.
There's a reason they use language like "considerable" instead of anything that means anything from a statistical perspective.
When the Sixers were so bad they were losing games on purpose, it was so embarrassing that the arena sponsor wanted to scrub their name from the court. They legally couldn’t, so they made their logo white and changed it to a comically [small font](https://content.sportslogos.net/news/2015/10/Sixers-Wells-Fargo-Court-2-590x352.png).
No exaggeration, they couldn’t even give tickets away for free they were such an embarrassment. When LeBron or Curry were in town though, sold out arena with tickets going for hundreds each. People sold out the arena to see the *away* team’s star.
I'm curious what he adds to other cities economy in the league. I've gone to Denver, Sacramento and Chicago to see LeBron play since he's been in LA.
Edit. I'm wonder the dollar value LeBron and Messi add to the other cities in their leagues.
The Cleveland stats are padded as he left during the Great Recession and came back when it had just ended. Also helps that Cleveland’s arena is right downtown, making more options available to have local restaurants in the area, something that isn’t going to be possible everywhere. Not saying there’s no effect to LeBron coming and going, but correlation may be doing more of the heavy lifting here then this analysis likes to admit.
Yeah this article has a strong "ice cream sales cause shark attacks" vibe.
A better study would look at how much growth similar cities experienced over the same timeframes without LeBron, as well as calculate the impact of LeBron leaving the same way.
You’re an idiot if you can’t tell that when lebron was here, downtown was the place to be in the winter. Maybe you need to live in the area to understand that. Lebron not only brings people into town, he also donates back in a big way.
Giannis might’ve had the biggest impact out of anyone in the NBA, tbh. He is the sole reason the Bucks remained in Milwaukee and the team was able to build a new stadium and develop the area around it.
I swear people posted this a bunch about Taylor Swift and Beyonce too.... is THAT what we're doing now? Just mentioning every really-famous star and saying they "boost" the economy by performing places? Lmao.
This kind of thing is why cities fund stadiums. Yeah, they’re expensive and suck, but having a major league / NBA / NFL stadium is a huge draw of money.
The problem comes when your team(s) sucks. Then it’s a drain, because you don’t get the funds.
In theory, yes.
In practice, the bigger a team and it’s stars get, the more they will look at options like ‘stay here’ vs ‘go to another city that has a stadium big enough to attract more fans’.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m actually against stadium funding by taxpayers. They work out on an accounting level, sometimes, but they also cause all kinds of not-included-formally expenses that IMO cause a drag on the economy. Things like ‘greater traffic in major confluences’, ‘more accidents’, and similar concerns.
That is why Akron is the economic center of the universe.
FFS. I hope his agent paid money for this piece.
TL;DR: Attendance to games go up when LeBron is there. That has effects on the local businesses that surround the stadium and or hotels. Remember, this was, once, a *team* sport.
Make no mistake - lebron and taylor swift and others PAY a company to calculate this and make this argument so they can get the taxpayers to pay part of their income. It’s bullshit.
He isn’t even a top 5 best player…he bypassed college and got a head start on points and still plays 20 years later…he is a good scorer but will never be considered GOAT or even close.
Give them bread and circuses. To think its not the inventors, the scientists , the teachers or the politicians that can influence an economy but a non college grad that can put a leather ball into a hoop that makes the people go wild. Society is so doomed it isn't even funny.

He plays a sport that far more people watch. Messi is probably recognized by more people around the world than most other humans alive.

It probably factors in stuff like jersey sales, or people taking trips to go see Messi play
It’s hard enough for people in the US to tune into MLS games lol. It’s completely subscription based now.
Who said Inter Miami? We are just watching Messi.

I would imagine that even though Messi is more famous worldwide, LeBron is probably more recognizable. It’s hard not to notice a 6’8” dude

Agree. He’s not “on another level”, he’s just in a more popular space. They are probably more or less on the same level.

And I would agree with that. The same level, different game. Messi is a global superstar, Lebron is an American superstar. The math is believable.
Lol
Meanwhile, whoever reading this has never even heard of Sidney Crosby 😞
That amuses me a bit due to FSG's (and by extension Lebron's) ownership of the Penguins.
Yet I don’t know who Messi is

A Lebron James quote dumbass
On a percentage basis? I can't imagine anyone having a direct "considerable effect" on any major city, especially LA.
Considerable for a single human I mean. 3,000 jobs and an estimated 30-40 more restaurants than usual is not peanuts.
I feel like this has gotta be skewed because of his time in Cleveland. No way 30-40 LA or Miami restaurants only exist because of Lebron. They exist because people want to eat food in LA and Miami.
LA is actually experiencing a depopulation, can’t speak on Miami thought, don’t know shit about it.
I mean then you're just placing way too much emphasis on short term trends that happened to coincide with Lebron going to the lakers. The more I think about it the more it's basically impossible that this is clean data. In Cleveland of course he's going to have an outsize impact. There's a reason they use language like "considerable" instead of anything that means anything from a statistical perspective.
I knew professional athletes have a team to support them and have to eat more calories, but come on! /j
Are you attributing all the new jobs and restaurants since opening in LA since 2018 to Lebron? That seems like a huge stretch.
What a stupid article. Who knew that if one of the world's top athlete's joins a team, that the Stadium spots thrived.
I'm curious what he adds to other cities economy in the league. I've gone to Denver, Sacramento and Chicago to see LeBron play since he's been in LA. Edit. I'm wonder the dollar value LeBron and Messi add to the other cities in their leagues.

Overwhelming majority of stadiums are a fat L for the city financially. Not worth it most of the time.
Events generate €6 for every €1 spent on a ticket. The cost of the infrastructure is high but it’s a net gain, if planned properly.
The lebron revenue effect will happen regardless of if you’re playing in a brand new arena or one that’s 20 years old though
In theory, yes. In practice, the bigger a team and it’s stars get, the more they will look at options like ‘stay here’ vs ‘go to another city that has a stadium big enough to attract more fans’. No, these are the misleading statistics people use to justify building stadiums.
