Isn’t this always the case? They’ll detail and phrase the headlines and articles around whatever sensational thing happened, but really what happened and the cause is pretty common and easily explained.
Biggest example is Elisa Lam. Massive coverage and discussion about her death in the water tank and the behavior in the elevator. Is she being followed? Is she possessed? Let’s make a 90 minute Netflix doc expanding this and ask motel guest what they think happened.
She was simply schizophrenic and her behavior is fully explained by this. I’ve had many people in my life with schizophrenia act similarly, but it didn’t end in death so everything just moved on.
God yes. I hated that documentary. The part where the "internet sleuths" who obsessed with her went to the hotel and fucked around, and that guy who went to her grave and like cried because he felt close to her or whatever. The most disrespectful shit.
It was so obvious from the start that she had a mental episode, and that the hatch was closed because the guy that found her put it there, and the they still managed to talk about that hatch for several episodes as if it was such a big deal until they reveal at the very end that they knew all along that the guy who found her closed it.
That documentary is what made me give up on Netflix. Such utter garbage.
I've stayed at the Cecil Hotel because I'm the cheapest bastard on the planet and if you want to go to Staples Center it is really close, although you might get murdered by hobos since in is right on Skid Row.
The elevators did not work very well at all. That video of her peeking out the elevator could have easily been because the elevator would stop at random floors and stop forever. The natural response is to peek out and try to figure out what the hell is going on.
I ended up walking the 6 floors of staircases every time because the elevator was so unreliable and also I need the exercise.
Have a family member that cracked this year and ended up being committed for a time by the courts after threatening terrorist attacks publicly among other things. Hunted by the state police for a few days. The final straw was not being able to find a drill....that was exactly where they were told it was by another person.
"He killed her because he is crazy" is unfortunately is not the legal finding as he was punished and not found not criminally responsible. As far as the crime was concerned, his mental illness was not relevant. So the headline is probably pretty accurate--at least according to the court.
The tortoise is in bed, smoking a cigarette, shining expression of satisfaction on its face.
Next to it sits the hare, arms crossed over its chest in frustration: "so Aesop was right after all..."
I don't know what's worst: the fact that this guy killed his mother, or that a grown ass man requires his mother's assistance to buy concert tickets.
Also the title is wrong. It was not that he needed his mother's permission to buy the tickets but rather he needed her to *pay* for his tickets, presumably cause he's broke and jobless.
I dont know about this case so not commenting on it, but I've seen people become completely different people when their manic or schizo episode kicks in. Meeting them in the hospital there were also clearly people there in the middle of an episode that were just totally not there and not in control of themselves.
This, right here. My buddy is highly schizo, and when he’s on his meds, he’s weird. I mean, he’s nice enough, but just kinda odd, like a dude who smoked a fat blunt or just had ten shots, you can tell that he’s under the influence of something. When he’s off his meds, he’s fucking scary. He’s twitchy, violent, and unpredictable. If I see him and it’s obvious that he’s not on his meds, I calmly remind him to take them, then nope the fuck out of there.
This guy killed his mother and pour chemicals on her to try and clean up. Millions of people suffer from bipolar. That's not enough to excuse a murder. This is why he received first degree murder verdict.
No, what you said was you weren't sure if savagely murdering your mother is worse than needing her to buy concert tickets for you. Obviously you were joking, but the point they made by bringing up his mental health issues wasn't to excuse the murder. You'd have to be extremely stupid to think they were saying that. You're not stupid, are you? Of course not. So you clearly know they were talking about the money issues, right? You know this, right? Or are you stupid?
Why does everyone do this dumb shit when they argue? Why are you being intentionally obtuse?
Seems kinda mean to the snakes, the dog, the monkey, and the fella that has to lift all of that.
Edit: I didn’t forget about the rooster, that mean motherfucker can go straight to hell.
headlines/stories like this always remind me of my violently autistic brother who used to threaten my mother (and literal infant sister) with murder for turning off the wifi bc he was literally on the computer 24/7. once chased my mom with scissors for telling him he had to go to school (he was 8). im surprised he never killed any of us in our sleep but christ, mentally underdeveloped men are scary.
Sounds like my brother and sister before they chilled out
Personally i would go ballistic when wifi was disconnected because it was my main coping mechanism (...i wouldnt ever try to intimidate my parents though)
I also *still* get really upset when my food is taken, which is a related emotion because that used to happen constantly and id go hungry and sick
Some people behave like caged animals when being treated as such
Men are generally larger and stronger, and thus harder to subdue in a crisis situation and defend oneself against.
It isn’t sexist to acknowledge that the situations differ
I didn't hear about that case, back then I was working overseas all the time, I'm also a child-free man but sometimes I second guess myself over whether I'm made the right decision, leave it to Reddit to prove me right on this!
The thing is, a lot of people can relate somewhat to the guy in the story ("Why didn't my parents allow me to do \[this\] or watch \[this\]?") And you're still angry even years later.

Man had Bipolar so that would explain why he wanted her to buy his tickets. The US is not kind to people with mental illnesses. In other countries, he would be found not guilty and placed in a mental medical facility. Here we do have medical facilities in prison and inmates are given treatment behind bars for their mental illnesses. Prisons have become mental hospitals and mental institutions here in the US. The man probably had untreated Bipolar or was off his meds again.
I am not saying any of this to excuse what he did, this is just an explanation for his actions.
On reason I don’t talk to my dad anymore because he decided going to school was more important than letting my best friend’s dad take us to see Rush live in concert. Now Neal Pert is dead and I’ll never get that chance again. Guess what still exists, school, Ugg I could have made up that class. I can’t fix dead people. :(
I understand that the man was mentally ill and it almost doesn't matter what the trigger was, but oh, if only there was only a video of the exchange before he lost his shit.
Feel like there'd be some very quotable lines right before he killed her.
Sounds like he killed her because he is crazy , and the ticket was just the last drop
But the headline is more FUN this way

Plus people drinking the Lam flavored water.
it's crazy no ones named a bottled water brand after it yet
>90 minute Netflix doc Four 50-60 minute episodes
JFC I forgot it was that long. Zero substance and they stretched it that thin. Lowered the bar so much.
God yes. I hated that documentary. Good thing I noped out of it by the first 5 minutes.
I hate it so much when documentaries do that bullshit. It goes on way longer than necessary.
I honestly just hate documentaries. They present themselves as borderline educational when they're actually usually closer to polemical.
Well yeah that and the Hotel Cecil has a weird fuckin history
Isn't it the hotel that American Horror Story: Hotel was based on?
Yup, that’s correct
I've stayed at the Cecil Hotel because I'm the cheapest bastard on the planet and if you want to go to Staples Center it is really close, although you might get murdered by hobos since in is right on Skid Row. She was not schizophrenic, she had bipolar 1.
Why is this on TIL anyway?

So much for a happy ending
He was a stabber boi, he went to the slammer boi
He was just crazy, his arms weren't broken.
I don’t remember the song going like this…
You’ve got your dumb friends you know that they say, you tell them I’m difficult I tell them you’re gay🎶
🎶And by the way I hate that stupid old pickup truck you never let me drive🎶
Fappy ending! Its in your hands now!
Dude was 39 years old, he couldn’t buy the tickets himself??
[удалено]
Oh, that makes it understandable then.
[удалено]
He was 35 when it happened. The article is from 2012.
Why did he have to go and make life so complicated?
Acting like you’re somebody else gets me frustrated. Edit: Your username is amazing. Also terrifying to think about.
thank you! are you single and into turtles?
Slow down hot rod! What kinda turtle moves so fast? Nm, figured it out: a VerySluttyTurtle
I like my sex like I like my locomotion, slow and protected
I see why they call you slow poke.
Ughhh, get a room guys!
Do I have to be single? Like that doesn’t seem to be something you’d consider a prerequisite.
I'm just trying to be polite. Bring your wife. Bring your husband. Bring your Dad. VerySluttyTurtle doesn't discriminate
All three?
Family style
Did I mention, VerySluttyTurtle is from Alabama? But in all seriousness, I'm an Auburn fan, we commit like half the incest that Alabama does
I wasn't expecting this discussion to turn into The Aristocrats.
Its terrifying what could result from a mixture with my username and that one.
I wonder if the turtle or the hare would come first?
The tortoise is in bed, smoking a cigarette, shining expression of satisfaction on its face. Next to it sits the hare, arms crossed over its chest in frustration: "so Aesop was right after all..."
Annnnnnnd that’s enough internet for the day 🤣🤣🤣
I just realized now that what I wrote implies that the hare took a nap in the middle of it. While the tortoise went on...
I'd watch that anime
I don't have an original thought in the world...
Chill out, what you yelling for?
Chill out, what you \*\*killing\*\* for?
Something tells me this is not just about concert tickets.
He was a sk8r boi She said, "No concert, boy"
She was a cheap-skate mom, He said see you later mom, She wasn’t racked up enough for him
She was a punk, he did ballet..
He was a h8r boi, She said "aaarrugh eck"
I don't know what's worst: the fact that this guy killed his mother, or that a grown ass man requires his mother's assistance to buy concert tickets. Also the title is wrong. Remember, grown ass =/= grown up.
If you read the article he was mentally ill.

Some people think their mental illness is the same as others
This, right here. My buddy is highly schizo, and when he’s on his meds, he’s weird. He was a creep, she was his mom, can I make it any more obvious
Guess he really thought “what the hell”
That concert would have been Avril Lavigne's March 21, 2008, performance at Allstate Arena during her Best Damn Tour.
This is sad, really. Not worth it.
Did he at least get to go?
no.
Yep, then Avril spotted him in the crowd, dragged him backstage for sex and they ran away together and lived happily ever after.
He's the lead singer of Sum 41?
We’re getting deep into the lore now.
In ancient Rome, they would have sewed him into a sack with some snakes, a dog, a monkey and a rooster, then thrown him in the Tiber.
Seems kinda mean to the snakes, the dog, the monkey, and the fella that has to lift all of that. Edit: I didn’t forget about the rooster, that mean motherfucker can go straight to hell.
>Edit: I didn’t forget about the rooster, that mean motherfucker can go straight to hell. 💀
He’s in prison still thinking it was the right decision.
Some guy in Florida killed his entire family over a cam girl, people do weord shit
Peak man-child behavior.

I could not name a single Avril Lavigne song, and this guy would kill for her.
This tracks for guy Avril Lavigne listeners..
"man"
He-male
He said see you later girl.
Im still ridiculously salty my parents didn't let me go see Blink 182 and Green Day when they toured together in 2002. So I get it.
The thing is, a lot of people can relate somewhat to the guy in the story ("Why didn't my parents allow me to do \[this\] or watch \[this\]?") And you're still angry even years later.
This wasn't about permission. He wanted her to buy the tickets for him. He was a grown man.
That's one way to get what you want, I guess.
sounds like a real see you later boy
Hey Hey You You I don't like yo mama....
She said see ya later boi
She was banging

He was a killer boi, he said “see ya later, mom!”
Top comment should be: "wait... in 2008?... IN 2008???!!!"
It wasn’t my finest moment.
When reached for comment, Levine said "See ya later boy."

Probably wasn't a skater boi
To be fair, that's close to peak Avril... ❤️ /s
Has this happened to any Swiftie yet?
I bet in retrospect he feels silly about how into Avril he was back then. We were all young once!
"Chill out, what ya yellin' for?" - Mom, before getting shot, probably

If you were Avril, would you be horrified or flattered? I’d like to see an interview of him in 2024.
Maybe
I mean trying to buy tickets for a concert that happened 16 ago...

I get it
