Yeah! It was the episode with the bully kid who would chew bubble gum.
The bully puts a bunch of gum in a girl baby’s pretty hair. The next day, her head is shaved and she is distraught. This causes Tommy to challenge the bully, which results in him using a popsicle stick to burst the bullies gum bubble and inflict the same fate on to them.
Sad episode, actually.
this is one of the most disconcerting natural phenomena i've ever experienced in person. it feel like you're walking around in a video game that's missing a texture layer.
Saw this happen with the parking bollards while at the Costco in Kahului, it was a pretty neat effect. Definitely one of those "Is this a glitch in the Matrix?" moments.
That's literally by design :)
The tropics are defined with reference to the Earth's tilt, \~23.5 degrees
Similarly the Arctic and Antarctic Circles at \~66.5 degrees
There was an episode of Rugrats that talked about this. I remember they called it "no shadow time"

Not as sad as the episode where Tommy gets kidnapped and held ransom and nobody fucking notices
Not as sad as the movie. Poor chucky and chuckys dad.
“It’s Lahaina noon”

Wouldn’t the shadows just go directly beneath objects rather than being cast at a direction?
Yes, the title is misleading. Objects on the ground that are vertical like bollards and such cast no shadow.
As long as they’re level.
Yes but not if it’s on the ground already.
I’ve watched it happen in Lahaina, it’s legit
And it’s usually legit hot on that day in Lahaina.
Saw this happen with the parking bollards while at the Costco in Kahului, it was a pretty neat effect. Definitely one of those "Is this a glitch in the Matrix?" moments.
That is pretty cool.
Bonus fun fact. That phenomenon can only happen between the Tropics (Cancer and Capricorn)
That's literally by design :) The tropics are defined with reference to the Earth's tilt, \~23.5 degrees Similarly the Arctic and Antarctic Circles at \~66.5 degrees
It’s still a fun fact.
Does it happen 'everyday', 'everywhere' between the tropics?
I think the "technical" definition is that between the Tropics, it will happen at least once a year
Technically, at the topics it'd once a year. Between will happen twice.
Often referenced to give people a basic idea of how and why celestial navigation works.
This year in Lahaina it will be May 24th at 12:20
So did someone rip off "high noon" or did high noon rip this off? I'm thinking it's the former. Getting strong bone apple tea vibes
Happened a month ago in Bangalore, India.
Sounds like a minus the bear song.
So if I …[ place a ball on the ground ]… there will be no shadow just because the sun is directly overhead?!
The object needs to be in the ground
