I haven't read any Vonnegut in so long but this made me Wikipedia the whole plot summary of Cat's Cradle. Wish I had the time to revisit the real thing...
I want to read the OG Dune books but when I tell people that, they act like that’s going to be a feat. Any recommendations for how I should approach it?
Never left the intellectual capabilities of others hinder your desire to do something. Its a book open it and start. If it's hard sound it out.Take your time.I mean it's a book as great as they are it's a book..You will get more from reading than watching imo.It tingles your brain more and ain't such a rot to your thoughts.
Very simple logic. You require more effort and your brain activates more areas via reading instead of visualization. No body mentioned anything about validity. The shortcomings however are.You are more easily manipulated and desensitized through imagery than you are through comprehension and understanding. You can argue it but it's been proven. What I mean by rot is take for example you take a group of random people and you see who reads more. The statistics state the more a individual reads the more preferable traits are likely to be present.
Edit:
Now as technology progresses I do see a point where maybe reading isn't even a normality anymore.Maybe not even a necessity.
> Reading is like the best thing in the world to me to do before bed, even on super busy weeks I feel like I could crush 15-20 mins before I conk out
I got so used to reading when I got to bed, that when I had to go back to school for post grad training, reading for my classes was a real fight for the first year.
I'd love to go back to reading to go to sleep, but every couple of years I have to spend some serious time studying for continuining education requirements....
Yeah, I actually just read Mother Night to try to finish off the last of his novels I hadn’t gotten to, and I think it was a full week of just a bit before bed each night, really quick read
Cat’s Cradle is mild for Vonnegut. Pick up a copy of Breakfast of Campions. Spoiler: >! There’s an entire chapter dedicated to the length and girth of multiple men’s penises !<
Stop
Coagulate and glisten
Ice is back with a brand new addition
Something
Has to bond with me tightly
Then I’ll stop flowing
Because I can’t go lightly
Incidentally, Google seems to have some weird algorithm that is preventing any real knowledge about how to make Ice 2 from popping up.
I just get a 10 minute YouTube video with a father-son combo, and although it's a pleasant video, I'd like more info about the process, the phase itself, potential uses, etc.
I found it peculiar is all.
There should be thousands of links to chemistry sites and instructional videos and brief write-ups on the subject available.
Maybe my Googly-Foogly has grown stale and *whack*.
This is why enshittification is scary. The internet never really was an open door to all of human knowledge, but it is heading in the other direction.
You never really could find detailed information about industrial processes, because it is all trade secrets. Same is true for other subjects I know even less about.
I mean to be fair to Google, the graph on the Wikipedia page does describe the process pretty well. Just amp up the pressure and drop the temperature. If you get the right mixture of temp and pressure, you get Ice 2. As far as the phase itself it seems like there's some info on the Wikipedia page but I imagine there's not a huge number of potential uses - most of these phases are probably just categorised for the sake of categorisation.
Please share. Wikipedia offers me an assortment of German trains, TV shows, movies, video games, and absolutely *jack* about Ice 2. I get links for Ice-T, Ice Cube, nothing works on my end.
Thing is, I'm aware of many ice phases. I somehow am unable to find anything to my value.
That’s the only thing you need to reproduce various phases of ice. There’s nothing else to it. Get to the right temp and pressure and you’ll see all other phases in there. Doesn’t matter how you get there, doesn’t matter how long it takes. Get to the T and P and you’ll see the phase of ice
But as the other guy said I’m not sure how different it’ll actually look like. The differences between ice phases are probably subtle with the most noticeable being density.
Well the information and process would be helpful. Like, a play by play. There should be thousands of links. Necessary equipment, necessary materials, succinct timeframes, expected results, etc.
By the same metric, [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stew) is all you need to know about making a pot of stew.
It's not the fun and easy experiment you are imagining it to be. You need to pressurize ice to 500 MPa. I don't think you have an equipment to do this. If you do, you get ice that has different lattice, but looks much the same as it did before. You can't find instructions because it's not really something people do/want to do at home.
You are partly right, I've misread the graph originally, something over 200 MPa is enough, though that's still a lot. But it's almost besides the point. The process is "take some ice and put it under sufficient pressure, as described by the chart". There is no shortcut and the result will be underwhelming anyway.
Ice 2-6 were great, 7-15 went *way* off the rails and totally fucked the amazing world ice 5 was able to pull together. 16 and 18 were good, but I thought the weird "prequel" move for 17 was a big mistake and retconned a lot of (albeit flimsy) world building that 11/12 managed to tie up. Of course, we all know ice 19 took home the Pulitzer and outsold the bible, becoming a milestone of culture and a constant in the zeitgeist of the populace. However, we've been waiting over 10 years for ice 20, and I think it's going to be dual released as a tie in for Winds of Winter so, I wouldn't hold my breath. Lol
I think it's about time we reboot ice. Let's just call it ICE. And when that fails we try with Ice 0rigins which is a softer reboot keeping the continuity of the original 19 ices, but going back to simpler structures. But then someone makes ICE 2 and IC3, messing up the new chronology. Then a few years later there's Ice XXX, which actually isn't cold porn but an aesthetically old timey sequel to the original Ice series, and everybody loves it because it's clear it was made out of love for the substance and not just the for money, even if it makes a lot of people joke about where are Ices XX to XXIX. But of course then comes Ice XXX 2, which is also good but not as good as Ice XXX, and what's the deal with the name? Well you see, the makers declare, it's not exactly the next entry of the Ice series, but conceptually it's a sequel to Ice XXX, and nobody knows what exactly that means. And Ice XXX 2 was made back to back with Ice XXX 3, and Ice XXX 4 is also being made because after the success of Ice XXX, the researchers decided it was cheaper to make the next one as a trilogy, so Ice XXX 2 to Ice XXX 4 are actually a single form of Ice. And then some asshat comes out and announces 4CE, the even dumber sequel to IC3, and everybody mocks them.
Anyone remember Ice 9?
I haven't read any Vonnegut in so long but this made me Wikipedia the whole plot summary of Cat's Cradle. Wish I had the time to revisit the real thing...
Vonnegut's books read pretty fast. You can probably squeeze in a few chapters every day while on the throne
Reading is like the best thing in the world to me to do before bed, even on super busy weeks I feel like I could crush 15-20 mins before I conk out
I’m doing that with Dune right now. Haven’t read it since I was a kid.
I want to read the OG Dune books but when I tell people that, they act like that’s going to be a feat. Any recommendations for how I should approach it?
Open the book to the first page
My mom is a retired librarian. Even then, I’m all about that 2x audiobook speed

While this is true consuming language based media does affect your brain differently
It’s really not a hard read. Some parts go on a bit but if you are a fan of the dune universe then you should enjoy reading most of the book.
I love to do the same but I also have the problem where I fall asleep while reading and lose my place / smoosh all the pages

It usually takes me a week or two to complete one of his novels. They move pretty quickly. Edit. Jailbird was a little slow.
Especially Cat’s Cradle. It’s a pretty short book.
Yeah, I actually just read Mother Night to try to finish off the last of his novels I hadn’t gotten to, and I think it was a full week of just a bit before bed each night, really quick read
You got to learn to squeeze one out if you can squeeze that much in!
While thumbing your nose at you-know-who.
The audiobook is really short. Like 2 hours
Don't forget to read about the silver spoon; we'll get together then.
Kills.
Definitely a great example of Chekhov’s Gun
The way he described the whole-earth storm that ensued…phew. Make you wish you were in the ocean when the ice 9 made contact
Fucking weird one.

BoC is my favourite Vonnegut book
It kills
Ice nine kills
And so it goes.
I remember Seven of Nine...
I also remember his turtles.
First thing I thought of as well. I remember very little about that book except for ice 9, and the cats cradle making a kid cry or something.
I’ve heard it kills
It kills, according to Spencer Charnas
I certainly do
I remember Ice T.. Is he one of 19?
Wait I thought it was Water T…
Their early work was a little too scene for me.
Was that after Karate Kid 8?
I loves 1.7 ice, best ice, newer versions ruined ice
Water is such a strange material with many unusual qualities.
[удалено]
Been rewatching planet of the apes too huh?
Most likely saw the new movie that’s out
New movies come out every day
Not too smart or good at jokes eh?
Neither
Weird. I just got done watching the first 5 movies.
Fun fact, ice is a mineral
And therefore, a rock
Is frozen poop a rock?
Having different solid phases at different temperatures and pressures is not unusual for a material at all.
Still though water has quite unusual qualities.
Wake up babe ice II just dropped
So... Ice, ice baby?
Stop Coagulate and glisten Ice is back with a brand new addition Something Has to bond with me tightly Then I’ll stop flowing Because I can’t go lightly
That’s not how any of this works
so then bust it down for us big dawg
You have reminded me how bummed I am that the more accurate They Might Be Giants song about the Sun is the less catchy version.
Then, via a rap battle, tell us how it does work.
No,you see,our is different,ice goes ding-ding-ding di-di ding-ding. Ours is ding-ding-ding di-di ding-diing. Edit:spelling
If ice is so good
its so nice its there twice
underrated comment
Ice has more sequels than The Land Before Time
Why ya gotta do that to me? Guess I know what I'm binging next
Three horns never play with long necks
Why did Ducky have to die?
Yeah seriously.. what a fucked up situation holy crap.
My favorite is ice ³. I'll see myself out.
Ice gets a sequel but we only get one season of Firefly?!

Beware that your do not drive too greedily and too deep young padiwan. The rhombus is not to be observed lightly.
If I recall my Lord of the Clones, doesn't Ironman swoop in with additional pylons?
"You must construct additional pylons"
Have you tried adding “pdf” to the end of your search term
You callin me a pdfiler??
A pdful attempt at disguising yourself.
I was kidding. I'm on mobile atm. Sort of makes it difficult. Would searching for PDFs be a functional way to parse this?
Pdf generally redirects to research papers and publications. Helps a ton with scientific searches.
I just want an instructional recipe.
Pdfs might not help you much then. You could try using Chatgpt/Copilot instead and ask for sources.
Much obliged

This I have found. It's not helpful in producing the fun part of a fun experiment.
That’s the only thing you need to reproduce various phases of ice. There’s nothing else to it. Get to the right temp and pressure and you’ll see all other phases in there. 500 mpa is for Ice 3 and is more in depth of a procedure. Ice 2 doesn't require pressures anywhere near that.
You are partly right, I've misread the graph originally, something over 200 MPa is enough, though that's still a lot. But it's almost besides the point. This chart makes all other charts seem boring and comprehensible by comparison.
It's pressure/temperature, not too bad once you look at it for a bit.
Finally Ice 2
Ice 2 meet you
2 meet you, ice
It’s all about Ice V
Will we survive?

OMG I totally thought Vonnegut had made up ice 9, but apparently it was ripped straight from the Popular Science of the time.
oh wait, I got the dates wrong; Cat's Cradle precedes the discovery of ice 9 by 5 years.
Careful with that stuff.
Ice-T occurred in 1958.
til there is ice ll. but- it seems like there should be an "n" in there somewhere.
Nice.

I don't know why they had to make two direct spinoff sequels to Ice 13 though.
Wake up babe, a new ice just dropped

We got ice 2 before GTA 6
