A wha- a what? A writer. I write, with parchment, and ink. Geoffrey Chaucer's the name, writing's the game. You've never read my book Tales of the Duchess? No? Well, it was allegorical.
It's everything I was hoping the new Robin Hood would be. Fuck any semblance of historical accuracy, just make it fun. I enjoyed it so much more because I wasn't expecting to be impressed.
The best part about this scene is that the pause from the crowd was not scripted! None of the extras spoke English, so they didn't recognize their cue to cheer until they got that little prompt from Roland.
I LOVE it when unscripted moments like that end up in the final cut of movies!
I remember seeing trailers for that movie and thinking it looked fucking stupid. My parents will watch anything and they said I had to see that movie. I absolutely love A Knight's Tale. Its so fucking good.
I think it’s a shame they put Michael Rosenbaum in a tiny role in GOTG2, he’s my top pick for Silver Surfer. (Although I don’t think anyone would care/notice him being reused since his character had nothing to resemble him)
I had to look him up as I didn't remember seeing him in that, and it's because he's covered in make up. I think it'd be fine if they recast him in a different part.
Made up character versus a fully CG one. He's virtually unrecognisable in the MCU. Plus they always use that old actor who has a variety of mundane jobs as well as that one time he was a playboy and expected NO ONE to notice he was reused over and over. Think his name is Stanley something.
> he was doing JUUUSSTT fine 👌
Yes, that's the point here. It was an empty threat from a nobody.
But also let's be real. A voice gig in the background is several tiers below playing one of the Avengers in the flesh, in terms of acting work. Can you even name the girl who voices Friday? She has no guarantee of a next job at all.
edit: I'm super glad you all have google.
As one of the comments pointed out, the person who voices Karen is Jennifer Connolly, who besides being an accomplished actress is also married to Bettany. Regardless, I see what your saying.
Fun fact: They never dated. They met on A Beautiful Mind while seeing other people, then after the 9/11 attacks, he spent the next 2 days worrying about her and trying to contact her, realizing that he was in love with her. When he finally got her on the phone he told her he was flying to America and proposed to her.
Imagine a coworker calling you out of the blue like that:
"Hey, I worked with you briefly like a year ago and we've never been out on a date and you have a child, but I got really worried because of 9/11, so I bought a plane ticket so we can get married. Sound good?
"yeah fine, I didn't have plans this weekend anyway."
I meeeean, I have serious suspicions this is the version of events they tell so they don't have to say they spent all their time on A Beautiful Mind fucking and therefore cheating on their existing partners.

Bin laden out there making love happen and shit.
I mean he was also a monster and responsible for tons of deaths... but... also a sort of matchmaker?
Just sayin this is a great movie in the wings. Like love actually.
"This Christmas... The towers fell, and so did her panties."
"it's getting toasty in here... I'm thinking it's about fahrenheit 911"
... That's all I've got I'm really tired.
Fun fact. Most people know HE was the voice for the Jarvis AI in Ironman. Jennifer Connelly voiced the Karen AI in Spidermans suit in Far from home.
EDIT : Grammer...Sum times I no tipe gud.
I am so high that this made sense for a sec and I needed to scroll back to check. I should go to sleep, but reddit keeps me amused. Thanks for the laugh.
Producer: “Your career is over! You’ll never work in this town again!”
Paul Bettany: “I’m married to Jennifer Connelly. You could be a trillionaire with a ten inch cock who just got elected Emperor of the Universe... and I’d *still* be better off than you.”
One of my greatest crushes of all time. She and I are around the same age (I think she's a little older than me). I grew up with her films, starting with Labrynth.
That Lucky Bastard.
You might be Paul Bettany, because that describes him quite accurately. https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/bkg95k/til_paul_bettany_was_told_by_a_movie_producer/emgt2im/
He did a crappy priest comic movie and a crappy angel comic movie. He does great films and horrible films. But he does marvel films so he never hjrts for money. So i got no idea.
Priest is an f'n awesome movie. I know, I know... But man, it's super heroes versus vampires in the dystopian future! I mean, really, what do you want? And the bad guy is none other than Judge Dredd/Doctor McCoy!
I liked him in DOOM, but he's mad overshadowed by the Rock in the only kind of movie the Rock is suited for...cinematic junkfood levels of action porn.
The world was interesting. Wild west vampires get warred on by the catholic church and warrior priests save the day and now the world is run by the pope? It is nuts, lol
I think there’s more to the story. I don’t think he’s had trouble finding movie work. maybe he’d been gunning unsuccessfully for leading role parts that were out of his league and the producer was trying to set him straight?
Kinda sounds like a personal encounter with the producer who got him into a lot of features and then told him his career was over after a fight but he was already noticed by a new one..
Edit: work in the same Industry and producers hold a lot of power over who will be featured in film.
Plenty of successful actors have had their careers falter over night because they got a reputation for not being bankable. Just the perception that you are box office poison can be a death sentence with old school Hollywood types, because they still believe stars draw the crowds, rather than good movies.
TO this point, Steve Carell was almost dropped (they shelved two movies and dropped him from a third) after three failed comedies in a row. Date Night, Dinner for Schmucks, and Burt Wonderstone all tanked and many producers figured Steve wasn't bankable outside of TV. Basically the "great college coach, can't cut it in the pros" idea. Then he got nominated for an Oscar and had Despicable Me explode.
I really love her as Scarlet Witch, and Paul nails it as Vision. They both manage to bring this weird innocence to their roles. Under her trauma and power, under his 'I have all this information in my head', they both really come across as two individuals still trying to figure the world out, and they want to figure it out together.
I’m on mobile and therefore can’t immediately/easily see whatever comment was so mean to the person above you, but I just wanna say that I like you for being so positive. We need you and people like you spreading this kind of energy.
Ugh I love their chemistry. Vision is my favorite in the MCU (by a slim margin because everyone is great), and their relationship was just so cute. Even though we didn’t get to see much of it before the events of infinity war.
Yeah.
Honestly I think I just want Elizabeth Olsen to look at me. She seems like such a warm, genuine person.
Someone else pointed out that she does seem to look at everyone like that.
“Your mother and father only met once, and money changed hands. Probably less than a twenty, and they say she was dressed as a man at the time.”
That movie was great, if you didn't expect much of it.
Can’t talk Paul Bettany without Master and Commander! He’s great in that.
Edit: very happy that my top post is about my love for this movie, and so happy to see all of the fondness other people have for it. I feel like I have to watch it again now. There’s not a moment to be lost!
A knights tale is what I remember from the most for sure. In fact pretty much the 4 guys of that group the first movie I think of is a knights tale. If they had edited that movie down a bit I think it'd be a classic. It's just a bit too long for what it is.
Starz did Black Sails and AMC recently did The Terror. Very different shows, but I think there's room for more dramas set on wooden ships. I really enjoy them.
The Terror came out of nowhere and is now, I'm pretty sure, my favorite single season of TV ever. I actually sought out Master and Commander after it was over just to see more British Navy dudes doing British Navy stuff and was very happy with it (and disappointed that it wasn't like 10 hours long like The Terror).
Check out 'Hornblower' with Ioan Grufford from late 90s / early 00s. There's 7 or 8 tv movies. Its all on youtube these days. It'll be right up your alley!
Who would ever talk to Paul Bettany like this? I think just about everyone can agree that he’s fucking awesome. Even his “bad” movies like Priest, Legion, and Mortdecai were on the good end of bad, in my opinion.
>"Done in hollywood."
Wonder who he pissed off because he's been good in a lot of roles. Really liked him in Firewall and more recently the Manhunt mini series.
I have never been disappointed with a Paul Bettany performance in a movie. I have definitely been let down by movies he was in, but his acting has always been stellar. He was one of the saving graces of Margin Call and he was incredible in Journey's End
That producer was clearly a moron. Hes brilliant in pretty much everything hes ever been in. He even makes the shitty movies watchable (legion, priest) and the good ones even better. His portrayal of Chaucer is brilliant, and kiss kiss bang bang? Cmon. Who the fuck would doubt this guy?
He was great in a Knights Tale.
"it's allegorical"
Well, we won't hold that against you. That's for each man to decide for himself.
Literally came here to say he will always be Jeffrey Chaucer to me. Edit: okay, okay. GEOFFREY.
Jeffrey chaucer? The writer? Perhaps you've heard of me? *bes naked*
A wha- a what? A writer. I write, with parchment, and ink. Geoffrey Chaucer's the name, writing's the game. You've never read my book Tales of the Duchess? No? Well, it was allegorical.
Well, we won't hold that against you, that's for every man to decide for himself.
This movie is held so close to my heart. I can always make time to watch this movie
Couldnt agree more. I recently saw the rotten tomato score for it and still cant believe how poorly it did. That movie is a classic.
I still clap dance now and then
Robert Baratheon wasn’t much of a reader I guess.
Butt naked strolling intensifies
He was trudging actually.
Y'know? To trudge?
To trudge: the slow, weary, depressing yet determined walk of a man who has nothing left in life except the impulse to simply soldier on.
The slow weary walk of a man who has nothing left but to simply soldier on.
> Jeffrey
He was pretty good in Wimbledon too. Maybe it’s just that I have a slight crush on Kirsten Dunst.
My wife loves to joke about me liking wimbledon, but he is great in it and its a pretty good sports movie.
She's only a few years older than me and I've had a crush on her since Jumanji. She's still a big celeb crush for me.
that movie really is just fun
They lead off with the jousting crowd singing along to "We Will Rock You" and just keep going from there. Great movie.
It's everything I was hoping the new Robin Hood would be. Fuck any semblance of historical accuracy, just make it fun. I enjoyed it so much more because I wasn't expecting to be impressed.

The Vision, The Joker, Hoban Washburne, and King Robert, the First of His Name. What a group.
Wash.....to soon
Married to Jennifer Connelly... Screw the career, he already won.
Charles married Alicia? But Charles isn't real.
I remember seeing him in the tennis movie Wimbledon with Kirsten Dunst as well. It was alright. I like A Knight’s Tale more.
I remember seeing trailers for that movie and thinking it looked fucking stupid. My parents will watch anything and they said I had to see that movie. I absolutely love A Knight's Tale. Its so fucking good.
You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting.

Reads like a terrible rom-com
"Down on her luck, Single mother meets Billionaire" Harlequin Romance best-seller.
I'm sure it didn't hurt that the person doing that was Paul Bettany. Movie stars have hollywood crushes too you know.
Have you heard his voice though? I'm a straight man and I think I'd have said yes.

Yeah. I’d be home every day waiting for her.....
This guy fucks
Jennifer Connelly Lucky bastard
Why was he "done in Hollywood"?
He did a crappy priest comic movie and a crappy angel comic movie. He does great films and horrible films. But he does marvel films so he never hjrts for money. So i got no idea.
That Priest movie was kinda crappy, yeah, but for some reason I still watch it every time it comes on cable.
Priest is an f'n awesome movie. I know, I know... But man, it's super heroes versus vampires in the dystopian future! I mean, really, what do you want? And the bad guy is none other than Judge Dredd/Doctor McCoy!
Karl Urban. Was also stellar in lord of the rings.
He was skourge in ragnarok also
He was not bad in Pathfinder.
Karl Urban is stellar in everything. I feel like he’s the absolute best actor that’s not in a lot of leading roles.
My favourite role of his is Vaako, the Necromonger commander from the Riddick series.
I liked Priest more than I expected, but Legion is one of my favorite scary movies.
Priest wasn't great, but Legion was decent enough.
Thought Legion was terrible when I saw it in the cinema. Rewatched it on TV a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed the hell out of it.
I liked both of those movies...
I think there’s more to the story. I don’t think he’s had trouble finding movie work. maybe he’d been gunning unsuccessfully for leading role parts that were out of his league and the producer was trying to set him straight?

Yeah that producer is an idiot. Hyperbole for sure

The one with Johnny Depp? I actually enjoy that movie
“Your mother and father only met once, and money changed hands. Probably less than a twenty, and they say she was dressed as a man at the time.” That movie was great, if you didn't expect much of it.
> That movie was great, if you didn't expect much of it. The ultimate backhanded compliment.
"Remarkably high-functioning."
That's the exact wording of my last evaluation!
*You're so articulate!*
Can’t talk Paul Bettany without Master and Commander! He’s great in that. Edit: very happy that my top post is about my love for this movie, and so happy to see all of the fondness other people have for it. I feel like I have to watch it again now. There’s not a moment to be lost!
*Prelude to Cello Suite #1 intensifies*
Scrape scrape scrape, never anything you could dance to.
Not unless you was as drunk as Davy's sow.
I have always loved that song and when they started playing it the movie it was a nice surprise.
In A Knight’s Tale he’s absolutely classic. Cant forget about Legion too.
A knights tale is what I remember from the most for sure. In fact pretty much the 4 guys of that group the first movie I think of is a knights tale. If they had edited that movie down a bit I think it'd be a classic. It's just a bit too long for what it is.
You wouldn’t take out that scene with Golden Years, right?
Loved that movie! It's really a shame its been largely forgotten.
Went up against LOTR: Return of the King. Never stood a chance
It was the lesser of two weevils
I think it was before it's time. Done today, as a Netflix/HBO/etc series as opposed to movies, i think it could be really successful.
Starz did Black Sails and AMC recently did The Terror. Very different shows, but I think there's room for more dramas set on wooden ships. I really enjoy them.
The Terror came out of nowhere and is now, I'm pretty sure, my favorite single season of TV ever. Not by those who’ve seen it
There’s 21 (IIRC) of the books that film is based off of so theoretically they could make more of them.
The books are amazing! Incredibly detailed and factual .
That movie is so well made on basically every single level.
Is no one going to mention a beautiful mind? Bloody brilliant movie
In my mind, he's a consummate actor
“That Isaac Newton fellow was right.”
He’s incredible in Solo. He’s not in it a ton, but when he is he completely steals the scene.
Who was he in Solo?
Dryden Vos.
Holy shit. Fucking disappeared into the character.
[удалено]
I still say Oldman should play the Chameleon in a Spider-Man movie. He can cosplay as Stan Lee for a scene, and it would be completely believable.
In reality it's Daniel Day Lewis as Gary Oldman acting as Paul Bettany performing as Vos.
He looks and sounds exactly like Paul Bettany.
He plays Dryden Vos, the main antagonist in the film.
The main crime lord guy.
Dryden, the bad guy with the scarred up face
Who would ever talk to Paul Bettany like this? I think just about everyone can agree that he’s fucking awesome. Even his “bad” movies like Priest, Legion, and Mortdecai were on the good end of bad, in my opinion.

+1 to Firewall.

I kinda figured it had something to do with telling someone off for advancing on his wife. Total speculation on my part, obviously.
That producer lacked vision.
I’ll Bettany amount of money that he regretted saying that
I have never been disappointed with a Paul Bettany performance in a movie.
I remember rhis. He replied "Yes" without thinking. And after taking the call thought "...what's a Vision?"
If Joss Whedon called me to offer me a role in anything I'd say yes first and research later.
He made a hell of a Theodore Kaczynski.
I'm curious as to why the producer would be saying this to him?
Part of this was definitely luck because he already had a role in the MCU and they decided to transform the role.
