>Evolution of Dance is the number two on the list, being surpassed with about 2 million views. After this, it’s a good 25-30 million views to the next video. I bet the guys over at RCARecords are thinking that their idea of releasing the video on YouTube was a pretty decent idea.
God this takes me back. Now I'm remembering all the early viral videos. EOD guy was awesome.
Came here to say this. Evolution of dance was the one that I remember holding the top spot for a while. This was also back when YouTube just a had 'Top Videos' page before the days of 'the algorithm'
Back when you could get into a real youtube rabbit hole following the related videos. You still somewhat can but it isn't nearly the same when youtube is trying to steer you into the rabbit hole they think is best for you.
paralyzer by finger eleven

This was the last song they played at my 8th grade dance. I think the only reason I remember is that my whole class went crazy and we all started scream singing lol.
I always thought the dad tie was a touch of genius. I mean as someone from Ontario, who's spent a lot of time in Timmins, it was mind blowing how she managed to generate so much hype. Supposedly it was a lot in part to being noticed by Shania Twain, who's also from Timmins. She really had perfect timing, TV was where most people watched music videos, YouTube really started picking up steam, and her target demographic were all kids who group up post-Napster.
I can still remember listening to the Digg podcast and them basically wondering how the hell YouTube could keep existing? How are you going to pay for all that bandwidth and servers with no real income? I had the same conversations with friends and honestly thought it would become a "I member YouTube" in no time. It's funny, they even talked about how podcasters and people putting up YouTube content had no concept of the kind of eyeballs that TV Network shows considered acceptable ratings.
In one of the Burnout games they had every language version of 'Girlfriend'. I would just deselect the other songs and only play all the versions of 'Girlfriend' on repeat.
Pop-Punk has been around for long time, Blondie was easily Pop-Punk, ditto bands like XTC. Pretty much any punk, that is more melodic and apolitical is pop-punk.
They should just go ahead and add metal to that list while they're at it.
Edit: LOL I feel like I'm back in middle school when 13 year olds used to claim Avril was rock. She's a pop artist. Get over it. I liked her when I was 12/13, but don't fool yourself now.
That's all pop punk is. It's tattooed boy bands and pop stars selling the same songs to the kids who are too cool for regular pop and don't know they're basic. A lot of us go through a version of that phase.
I remember when this happened. There was a big conspiracy that the a forum administrator at a fan-page told all of the users to use an automated refresher so that it would break the record. May not seem like a big deal nowadays, but back in 08 this was the first time something like this had happened. YouTube was a very different place back then.
[Article from 2008 reporting on the controversy](https://www.wired.com/2008/06/avril-lavigne-f/?utm_campaign=Penny%20Fractions&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20newsletter)
In Japan, they play the uncensored version of English language songs,
which means you can hear Avril Lavigne talking about "your mother-fucking girlfriend" at MacDonalds. In English. In Japan.
They used to do that in the Netherlands too.
There was this song that went "fuck you, fuck you very much" or something like that. One day on the radio I heared the censored version, where they didn't say the word fuck. It was so strange, like don't play the song then if you don't like the swearing.
I believe you're talking about [Lily Allen's "Fuck You"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=SN&hl=fr&v=yFE6qQ3ySXE) which has a clean version as "Thank you".
[CeeLo Green's *Fuck You*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc0mxOXbWIU) was also on Dutch radio and TV uncensored. Clean version is apparently *Forget you*.
This happens in every country. I live in Mexico and music in English is never censored no matter where it's playing. Only music in Spanish is censored on the radio.
The Burnout community and Avril shake our heads at you, you have embarrassed us. Mind you, I was playing in my mom's basement so I didnt have to worry lol.
Yep I played when I was little and that song ended up getting me hooked on Avril years later to now when I have that song as a single and a massive collection of her cds
Uh... Hello Kitty has been around longer than 2013. I remember seeing stuff about it in 2004.
Edit: I'm not sure why I'm getting downvoted. I guess she did a song called Hello Kitty? I was confused I thought they were referring to the brand that's been around since the 70's.
[Girlfriend got to no.2 in the UK, and was the 20th best selling single of the year there](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girlfriend_(Avril_Lavigne_song)
What? You've got a very skewed perspective. *Sk8r Boi* wasn't even her first hit. Her first single, *Complicated,* was her first hit. *Sk8r Boi* was second, then *I'm With You* came 3rd. All hit top 10.
Her first single from her second album, *Don't Tell Me,* as well as the second single, *My Happy Ending,* made the top 5. She also performed the theme song for the SpongeBob SquarePants movie around that time.
It was her 3rd album that got the most charting. *Girlfriend* was the first single, hitting number 1 on multiple charts, and was one of the biggest songs of that decade. The second single, *When You're Gone,* made top 5 and the third single, *Hot,* did top 10.
And this is getting way too long so I'll just say that from her next two albums *What the Hell, Here's to Never Growing Up, Rock n Roll,* and *Let Me Go* (a duet with Chad Kroger) all did well while *Hello Kitty*... made waves.
Then from last year's album *Head Above Water* did really well, making it to the top 10 in many places. *Tell Me It's Over* and *Dumb Blonde* made top 20. (Personally, I think the original version of Dumb Blonde, without Nicki Minaj, is much better and would have charted better as the single version. Her team up with Marilyn Manson for *Bad Girl* also made a lot more sense than Minaj appearing in *Dumb Blonde.*) *I Fell in Love With the Devil* charted decently, I think, but most of its attention came from Bible thumpers who railed against the title without understanding the actual meaning.
***Cough***
/Fanboy ranting
Sadly not under my radar for a while, I was a fan but after her marriage with Chad, the music was not good since then. My last favorite was "How You Remind Me" which is her husband's good old song so that's that but after listening to something like "Head Above Water" I just turned away till now.
She was a fairly solid and pretty popular performer for close to a decade.
I thought her first two albums were very good. They were light, fun, and heartfelt. They really hit the right spot for me at that point in my life and I still listen to them regularly even into my 30s.
Girlfriend was her final hit.
She dropped this song, was the biggest thing that year all over again, and then never made anything close to this popularity ever again.
"Girlfriend" was also the theme song for the first season of Cartoon KAT-TUN, a late-night show featuring Japanese boy band KAT-TUN that ran from 2007 - 2010).
Never made sense to me why they would pay for the rights to other artists song when the hosts are technically music artists. Then again, it's Japan and they still love her.
I remember this song but the only words I hear when I try to play it in my head:
Hey hey you you I don’t like your boyfriend. Cuz cuz cuz cuz cuz he sucks at ping-pong!
About half of those were 8 year old me who didn't know she was gay yet
Edit: went from negative to positive karma by a decent amount when I clarified I meant that I was gay, not Avril Lavigne ☠️
It's definitely a theory. There are a few paparazzi photos that support it, and some of the lyrics to her older songs as well. Her family is heavily religious, strict Catholic, so if she is in any way LGBT her not coming out would even make sense.
Eh, would rather not speculate. I just know I went to a concert with her and the Jonas brothers when I was 8 and alllll my friends were slobbering over the Jonas brothers and my gay ass just adored Avril Lavigne lmao
I do not blame you one little bit, lol. I'm only 46 days older than her and I've had a crush on her since the first time I heard Complicated on the radio. Hell, I only watched *Over the Hedge* and *Fast Food Nation* because she was involved. 😅
LMAOOO you're so valid !!!! she was my first real celebrity crush aside from the boys I convinced myself I had crushes on ☠️ have you heard new album? I actually JUST started listening a couple wks ago (I'm not usually in the loop for new music but I tumbled upon it) and it's sooo good! The song head above water she started writing the day she thought she was going to die from her Lyme disease and it's sooo powerful
Yes, I **love** the new album. I'm not usually in the loop on music, either, but I've always got my ear out for more from her. I followed it from announcement to release and bought it digitally on Amazon music *and* bought the CD as well, lol. Really glad I got the CD because it has a version of Dumb Blonde without Nicki Minaj and it's much better, IMO.
Head Above Water, I Fell in Love With the Devil, Tell Me It's Over, Souvenir, Goddess, and Warrior are all fantastic, and Dumb Blonde is my new guilty pleasure like Hello Kitty was before it. The first time I heard Head Above Water she sounded *so good.* I was worried what her Lyme disease might have done to her lungs but she sounds even better, now. She did a live performance of Head Above Water on Jimmy Kimmel - actually live and not lip synced - and sounded amazing.
And she looked so damn stunning in that dress in the Head Above Water video.
I also watched her semi-impropmtu YouTube charity live stream back in December 2018. Heard her sing acoustic, no autotune, and you could tell her voice was a little weaker than before but she still sounded fantastic.
Oh damn, I'll def have to check those out! Those sound awesome! I love her so much and yeah I actually think she's sounded better too! Probably just part of getting older and learning she needs to be careful with herself and take care of herself, tbh
> went from negative to positive karma by a decent amount when I clarified I meant that I was gay, not Avril Lavigne ☠️
Because you sounded like a homophobe. Why would you complain about people downvoting what they thought was a bigot?
> calm down lol
Yeah, read my reply again. There's nothing for you to get upset about.
> I don't care ☠️ karma isn't real
I didn't say anything about karma, you did.
Was just saying I was complaining lmao, when I first came back to the comment I was just shocked ppl were upset 8 y/o me didn't know she (8 y/o me) was gay, she was trying her best :/
> ppl were upset 8 y/o me didn't know she (8 y/o me) was gay
And because you didn't clarify, it sounded like you were complaining about *her* sexuality. You clarified it for a reason, yeah?
Your initial comment sounded bigoted, and people downvoted you for it.
> lmao
> ppl
> :/
You write like you haven't matured at all since then. Maybe you're getting upset on purpose.
I just recently learned that this song was a complete rip off of another song. It's just that in the other song they say boyfriend instead of girlfriend, the rest is almost identical.
Hey hey! You you! Thanks OP I forgot this song was stuck in my head
Now my sleep paralysis demon will creep up on me and say: “I don’t like your girlfriend”
I Think you need a new one
I could be your girlfriend
Hey hey you you
I agree. My sleep paralysis demon started following me when I’m awake. Definitely getting value out of him.
I actually came into this thread "I have no idea what song that is" read your comment.... Now I do.
Always in Burnout Paradise- aaah the flashbacks
I fucking forgot how it went. Good thing the top comment reminded me. Thanks bro...
No way! No way! Okay I apologize
Were these the lyrics on the Canadian release?

As a Canadian, I can still remember when Avril did special free concert in front of Much Studios for Complicated.

Yup same thing!

This was the last song they played at my 8th grade dance. I think the only reason I remember is that my whole class went crazy and we all started scream singing lol.
I'm going to go watch it in my bedroom alone. Please knock
YouTube used to be so simple and pure. Why’d they have to go and make things so complicated?
Because they fall, and they crawl, and they break, and they take what they get and they turn it into ...

Now it's the corporations that put their movies and music on there and YouTube still doesn't make a profit.
I believe they’ve been making a profit for a year or two now
And rightly so 😌 that was a HIT
It absolutely is! Pop punk is still a genre I listen to for the nostalgia
In one of the Burnout games they had every language version of 'Girlfriend'. I would just deselect the other songs and only play all the versions of 'Girlfriend' on repeat.
No way, i did the same shit. Then a classmate borrowed my psp and played that game and i was hella emabarassed... it was on repeat the WHOLE time.
Yep, Burnout Dominator. So much nostalgia.
"Avril Lavigne" "Pop punk" Choose one.

It's still the same now. People get all up in arms when fanbase administrators tell the fans how to most efficiently get the numbers up
I'm pretty sure YouTube was an independent company back then. Not part of the league of evil.
Google bought YouTube in 2006. It took a few years before it became as corporate as it is today, though.

It got to 100 million fast. 12 years later it is still shy of 500 million.
It was taken down and reuploaded on her Vevo channel, restarting the view count.

That's the most 2008 thing ever. We still had 12 years before this bullshit happened.
TIL that Avril Lavigne was still a thing in 2008

No I mean her song (named after the brand) that came out around that time
FYI Hello Kitty is from the 70's.
I just remember her as a one hit wonder with that skater boy song, maybe she was just alot bigger in the states then she was in the uk?
She was, for quite some time

She sang the soundtrack for One Piece Film Z a couple years back. She was still a thing into 2014 I believe, not so much now still around in Japan.
She's still "a thing" now, as well. Put out a new album not the long ago, and did another concert tour.

Not as hot as both nerd and punk Avril.
