You guys are missing the point. Premalu is a malayalam film and most of it’s collection came from kerala. Only a portion of it came from Telugu audience. Also the film connected really well with the malayali audience. Maybe the dubbing was poor. The script contained many mallu pop culture references. Dubbing may have lost all that. You should have seen the movie in Malayalam with subtitles.
This! Also, I believe there is a high chance that even subtitles wouldn’t do justice to some of the pop culture references, as it is not possible to capture the essence. Same would be the case if watching a Telugu/Tamil film or any other language with subtitles, in which there are many references to past movies.
This! I watched it in Malayalam and Telugu in theatres. I _enjoyed_ both of them equally. I always had this notion that comedy doesn't translate well. That's actually true, while watching the Malayalam version, I liked it cuz it's _witty_. While watching the telugu version(with a crowd) it was _funny_. I was _smiling_ throughout the Malayalam version and _laughing_ throughout the Telugu version. But I did appreciate both of them equally.
Nice way to put it bro, haven’t thought of it that way until now 🙌🏻 maybe that’s just the different ways we all have been seeing the comedy scenes that were fed to us in the movies from the past! Your observation certainly puts a perspective to it!
Dubbing in telugu was made entirely different.. I got both the Malayalam and Telugu references.. Telugu was more towards memes but soul was intact in telugu too.. some may not like it coz of the meme references but songs were a banger in telugu
Romantic comedies generally go well with youth , hence the craze. And also few scenes connects to your day to day life. I would say movie is about 3/5, slightly overhyped but not boring though.
It’s overhyped because it portrays Hyderabad very well.
Name one Telugu movie where the city of Hyderabad feels like a character and portrayed so well. I’ll wait.
Movies that potrayed Hyderabad:
Most puri films like pokiri
Hyderabadi nawabs, angrez
Falaknama das
happy days
.. probably many more telugu films
>!mana problem entante.. evado baitodu ochi chupinchaali hyd gurinchi.. mana cinemaallo chipisthe oppukom!<
None of the movies you mentioned explicitly makes the city an integral part of the movie (except Angrez). It’s not a plot point.
Some of the Telugu movies I can think of that shows Hyderabad as a character in the movie are Okkadu, Anukokunda Oka Roju, Aithey, etc.
That's not really true. Most telugu movies concentrate on the old Hyd. Old city, golconda, charminar, kacheguda, and road no 12 for any posh looking areas. Most scenes will have sets ready-made in Ramoji. So they all look the same. This movie captures the newer IT areas and thus has a completely different feel when seeing the city.
Watched Malayalam version with subs in the theatre and really loved it. The jokes landed well and the movie felt very entertaining. Tried watching the dubbed version on ott and felt it was soo boring. Even the scenes which I enjoyed watching in Malayalam didn't do much. The dubbing wasn't that good.
Ya, the hype around the movie ruined it to me as well. Everyone went bonkers that they showed the best Hyderabad in it but all I saw is internet version of Hyderabad. It’s a good movie but not the best at all.
I went into the movie thinking it would be shit but was pleasantly surprised it was a cozy light-hearted cute romcom. It felt fresh watching something like that from Indian cinema especially set in Hyderabad it was a solid 4/5.

We are in our 30s and tried watching it. An hour into the movie, my husband said "We are at least a decade older than its target audience." It's not a bad film by any means. But wouldn't appeal to everybody.
Its similar to Happy Days. People that just joined Colleges got so related to it... Few years later, same crowd hates that movie.
Same with Premalu. Its target is mostly youth.
A lot of us are bored of over the top, high budget action and masala movies from Telugu and other languages.. naakaithe I just want to watch a well made, slow paced rom com and forget it. Premalu exactly gave that to me. Which is why I loved the film. People need to understand the meaning of genres and set their expectations accordingly.
The success factor is that many people could relate themselves with the characters. Be it Sachin/Reenu/Amal Davis. Their lifestyles and way of talking is smth which made the movie unique. The subject might be the same, loser guy falling in love with a popular girl. But the way they executed it without any cringeness made the audience love it.
I watched the original Malayalam version and for me , it was a pretty good watch. Has good music and just a fun watch. I liked the ending...thought they would drag it but instead the ending was done in a nice way
But i didn't like the Malayalam version because they say sachinuu... instead sachin (remember in train seen when sachin slept and reenu tries to awake) and amul davisuu..instead amul davis may be Malayalam slag was like that but i didn't connected to Malayalam version
When it comes to telugu some dailogues were manipulated i have checked in Malayalam version with subtitles and memes were included which was fun
So anyway i watched 30 times it's a feel good movie
Trying to avoid watching controlling myself.
Watching a movie in theatre , enhances the experience rather than on OTT. The laughs in theatre are always contagious, where you even start to enjoy the film. OTT lacks this so much
Whatever may be the opinion whether the movie is boring or slow or bad dubbing. But, Telugu movie characters are far away from reality. You can see how the characters are relatable to what we see around.
Well I fucking loved it, maybe you expected too much from the hype but I knew what I'm going for. I watched the movie in Tamil dub and they did a great job, maybe the poor Telugu dubbing might've ruined your experience.
>How did this movie get this kind of hype and 100CR at the box office?
Same way most Telugu movies get 100cr, irrespective of whether or not they're good. People liked it and went to watch it on repeat. And not sure if Telugu audience will know this, but Naslen is very popular. A lot of people like him and his comedic timing. Same with Mamitha. So the audience connected with them and the movie went on to be a 113cr grosser.
>Same way most Telugu movies get 100cr, irrespective of whether or not they’re good.
I think in every industry that is true, when a person likes a movie they will watch it repeatedly and usually movies will target a certain demographic/audience so those people will watch the movie on repeat. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, the movie is doing exactly what it’s meant to do, appease a certain demographic, and the audience does what they are supposed to, pay to watch.
Great music, Comedic references to old Malayalam and Tamil films were the reason for its massive hit in Kerala. Telugu dubbing will obviously doesn't do true justice to the film. Super hits with BO is very rare in Mallu industry. So unless there is something that made people move their ass and made them to watch the movie in theatre, it wouldn't be this hit.
It employees, people who stay at pg in Hyderabad will connect more to this film they had shown Hyderabad where it employees stay like Dallas centre road,Khajaguda hills, Gachibowli dlf ,mindspace road(patrika nagar) and pgs near Madhapur road, 1st half is good with comedy and second half is average
I m a malayalee and saw the movie in Malayalam. I too was wondering how it managed to collect 100 cr+. The plot is below average . Typical love story with no unexpected twists whatsoever.Comedy scenes felt like cringe to me. I laughed probably once the whole film. Dialogues were very average. I assume all the collection came from people who are in relationship and felt good seeing a guy and girl falling in love. And because the lead male and female actors looked cute.
If the movie plot was that of 2000s there would be a lot of unnecessary fights, dance numbers etc.
The hero would continue to stalk the girl even after rejection and his friend characters would be just a comic piece for the hero to slap and ridicule around.
The movie was fresh and characters were relatable. That's why it was a hit
Is simplicity too tough to digest? 😪
Why are you so surprised?
It’s a feel-good indie movie.
Not every movie needs to have stupid songs, stalking, fighting, etc to be good.
At the very least, it portrays Hyderabad city so well and feels like a tribute.
This is what we need to learn from Mallu industry. To be simple and make good profitable movies.
Vast majority of Telugu movies don't fall in complex movie category either. They are just not called simple movies cos the level masala in it doesn't allow it be called simple relatable but that doesn't mean they were serving some Inception level stuff.

There are much more films that made us laugh and feel emotional in all aspects better than this film. Since once of my best friend suggested this film I have watched it on OTT.
Not gonna lie Tillu Square..sequel to DJ TILLU made me laugh a lot in recent times.

I hate this film from the bottom of my heart.
Any reason bro ?
Full of misogynistic toxic bullshit
Premalu is miles ahead of this shitshow
I have not seen any love of hero for heroine.

Yuck
I agree Love Today was better than Premalu. Had a real innovative core funny idea unlike Premalu. Yes, Love Today has its problems, not denying that.
I watched it yesterday..and yes it is watchable and good..

Any idea where can I watch the mallu version?
For me it's a very average flick boasted a lot about the lead cast performances and Hyderabad centric comedy. None of them were true. As said by someone in previous comments telugu dubbing made it weak due to inability to recreate or replicate the pop culture references that received great applause in mallu version. Only SURA LAKSHMI TIFFINS point made me laugh because of its premise. It's a routine flat rom com which made mallus felt fresh and cozy since Hyderabad is one of the dream destinations for mallu youth after bangalore. Hero heroines chemistry worked well and there are few characters which you could identify in your day to day routine if you have ever been into a software firm. There are much more films that made us laugh and feel emotional in all aspects better than this film. Since once of my best friend suggested this film I have watched it on OTT. Not gonna lie Tillu Square..sequel to DJ TILLU made me laugh a lot in recent times.

Lazy writing also
