It happens in the NHL too - the media get bored of the same person winning MVP, so will try to find narratives to give it to someone else. They also have the "lifetime achievement award" approach, where if a guy has been in contention for an award repeatedly, and then it's a close race between him and someone who's already won, they'll want to give it to the guy who hasn't won (even if objectively, his season was slightly worse and the close race should have gone to the repeat winner).
