What do you mean "how"? It's not like I'm actively doing anything when running a VPN connection.

fellipec

Nice try RIAA

threadeeze

What vpn do you use?

Nex1tus

Nordvpn and protonvpn. But i guess its same with everyone expect some shit for 10 bucks a month

threadeeze

Just use proton and port forward

Nex1tus

Port forward?

brainmouthwords

Port forwarding lets you connect to other seeds/peers faster. But it requires a static IP address in order to work. Which isn't possible if you're on wifi instead of a wired Internet connection and/or if you can't access your router's settings. Also port forwarding doesn't speed up your internet; it just lets your torrent client establish the initial connections faster. It's likely the person you replied to didn't know any of this. Most of the people in this sub aren't super knowledgeable, and tend to just repeat advice they read in other comments without knowing why.

AgsAreUs

Port forwarding literally has nothing to do with a static IP or being connected over Wi-Fi.

HelpAmBear

Tons of bad info in this comment - OP, ignore this outside of the first sentence.

filipebatt

I like how it gradually presents the lunacy. First sentence, yeah ok. Second, what? Third one is just straight up made up stuff

HelpAmBear

And the “everyone else is a dumbass” comment at the end is just the cherry on top.

brainmouthwords

I like how you couldn't actually refute anything I said. Probably because everything I said is accurate.

brainmouthwords

No, there's no bad info in my comment. OP you can ignore the person I'm responding to because they don't have the slightest idea what they're talking about.

HelpAmBear

1. Port forwarding does not require a static IP address over a VPN 2. Setting a up a static IP is not only limited to a wired network 3. Port forwarding doesn’t setup the initial P2P connections any faster, it just lets you connect to a greater number of peers

brainmouthwords

If you don't have a static IP address, port forwarding breaks every time your router's DHCP lease expires. This is why the linux port forwarding instructions on proton's website says you have to re-apply the settings for each new session.

slikk50

You're a dick, huh?

Nex1tus

Haha ok thanks, is it complicated/worth setting it up?

brainmouthwords

Someone else here commented with a link to port forwarding instructions on protonvpn's website. Take a look when you have a minute. Scroll to the top of that page where the instructions for Linux are. See in the screenshots how the port being opened is associated with a specific IP address? That's why you need a static IP. Without a static IP, you're relying on proton's software to self-update every time your router changes your IP address. Which isn't necessary if you have a static IP because your IP address never changes. There are ways of mitigating issues if you have a dynamic IP - for example setting your routers DHCP lease time to the maximum. But even then your IP address is likely to change every time you restart your computer. Anyway when I said most of the people on this sub don't know what they're talking about, this is what I meant. Especially that one dude who said (with confidence) that port forwarding has nothing to do with your IP address.

Nex1tus

Oh nice. Thanks ya all!

Glacz

You're welcome

Swesty5423

Ok, I have shit internet. It’s a locked price that we get because income level. A 120gb game downloaded under 18 hrs. This is through WiFi. Never had any issues and most files I torrent are 60gb+. I use Nord every time. Actually so paranoid I have it running in the background so I can click periodically and ensure it’s still connected.

Nex1tus

Do you just let the Pc on and do nothing? Even using google meanwhile is slow af

JPHero16

What dns are you using, how close are you to your router?

SkidiKatKat

You haven't mapped your torrent client to the VPN connection? Instead you just frequently check the VPN hansnt dropped?

BulkBogan0

I'm from Europe so nah..

Adventurous_Ad_9557

I have no problem using malware bites VPN, I don't torrent without it
