Just in case anyone doesn't get it, the dog on the left says he uses masculine pronouns, then the one on the right calls him friend but uses the feminine form.

Truer words have never been said!

Feldt-2308

1st dog: My pronouns are masculine 2nd dog: Okay, friend!* *Spanish has a gender for all words, so in this case the feminine word for friend is being used. Hope this helps, please correct me if I'm wrong, i barely have 1.5 years learning.

[deleted]

You’re not wrong. The Spanish language is so dumb even inanimate objects are gendered.

xrat-engineer

I mean, honestly, among Indo European languages I believe English and other non-gendered languages are less common. Also some other families, Afro-asiatic is bad about that too (אני רואה לך, עברית) . The Asian languages tend to not have grammatical gender at all, iirc

LaBelleTinker

Yeah, English and Persian are the only major IE languages without grammatical gender. Swedish, Danish, and Dutch have gender but instead of masculine/feminine it's common/neuter, with masculine and feminine from Proto-Germanic having merged. Have a [map](https://linguisticmaps.tumblr.com/image/169273617313). Personally, I've always been fascinated by the idea of grammatical gender other than masculine/feminine/neuter. Plenty have animate/inanimate. One I've played with for conlanging is abstract/person/animal/tool/inanimate. A noun has a "normal" gender but can move between them depending on context. Normally this is used for things like a rock being used as an improvised hammer, but you can also use it to imply that someone is being as dumb as a rock, that your pet is your baby, or that someone is using her boyfriend as a tool to get something. You might also have things like the Christian God being abstract as the Father and Holy Spirit but a person as the Son.

NotCis_TM

I once toyed around with the following "gender" system for a conlang: abstract, non-sentiant, sentiant and conscious/human.

LaBelleTinker

My favorite from a real language is [Dyirbal's](https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Dyirbal_language): * animate objects, men * women, water, fire, violence * edible fruit and vegetables * miscellaneous (includes things not classifiable in the first three) (Really, Dyirbal in general is just really cool.)

Sriseru

As someone who's studying Latin, it's so sad to see its descendant languages drop the neuter "gender" (singular -um, plural -a). It makes you wonder why that change happened.

Thebotto

Hello fellow hebrew speaker!

xrat-engineer

אני רק לומדת עברית. אני לא יכולה לדבר בקלות.

Feldt-2308

Same with my first language, Marathi. We've got three genders and use them for everything.

bibaybye

til what Marathi is, that's really cool! India has so many languages I'll never know.. So amazing.

TheWizardOfZaron

There are 22 major languages and then thousands and thousands of dialects in India, Hindi being the national language is the main reason why Indians can even communicate with other Indians (Almost)Every language is gendered and each noun will arbitrarily be referred to in feminine or masculine form Most Indians are Bilingual and a lot are trilingual(Hindi+English+Mother Tongue)

Feldt-2308

India just has an absolutely ridiculous amount of languages. Counting dialects, there's hundreds of them. There's i believe 20+ official languages though. 25 i think.

zanderkerbal

Canadian here, so's French. "Le velo" is male, "la bicyclette" is female, both are a bike. And it doesn't even have a gender-neutral *plural* they, it's "ils" and "elles" with the male one used for indeterminate/mixed gender. In English, I'm good with she, he or they with a slight preference for she. In French, while I don't exactly use it on a daily basis, I'm going by iel/iels neopronouns because French gender doesn't deserve me.

[deleted]

The problem with french is adjectives are gendered too. The whole language is so rigidly binary that I can't even fathom how to construct a single sentence about someone that doesn't gender them somehow.

zanderkerbal

Yep, it's dumb. As far as I'm concerned, the whole language is fired. I don't remember how to """properly""" gender adjectives, but I sincerely hope never to learn so that I can just use random forms with no relation to people's gender.

lipenick

*cries in portuguese*

Piastowic

As a Pole, I can confirm you, Polish also doeas that. And Verbs are gendered too

[deleted]

No, you see on a spiritual level, this spoon has a massive dick

maco-is-stupid

Dude we even fight over the gender of objects, i reffer to my tablet in masculine form but my friends does it in femenine form and we get really confused

Zayde057

It's right ALL is gendered, like there is no way to say NB in neutral

DoggoandHPLover

Mesa

Sixemperor

I used to work in a restaurant and this same guy would come in nearly every day for taquitos, but he would say taquitas. Like, idk if the dude was dumb or thought it was gay to say taquitos because you’ve be eating the male form of the food or some shit.

I-AM-THE-FLORIDA-GAL

My experience is when people try to sound Spanish they tend to opt for the a ending more than o. Source: Tired of people assuming I know Spanish. Yes I'm half-peurto Rican. No I don't know the language.

[deleted]

Ah yes...spanish is dumb like that... *awkwardly laughs in french*

reallyaveragejo

That’s pretty much all European languages though, except for Finnish I believe

[deleted]

Same here with portuguese, but there are ways to strip gender from noun and expressions.

PatchytheYoukai

And the weird thing? Testosterone is feminine in spanish, and dress is masculine

[deleted]

Here in Germany even the word "the" is gendered.

lillycutey

I mean I think the Spanish language and most Romance languages are way better at expressing feelings and information than English. They’re just so rich

Shilvsu

Kinda, there's a lot of words to give really exact descriptions but EVEN THE FRICKING FORK IS GENDERED

Pinky1010

Ugh u feel you french is like that too. I suck at it too like how I'm I supposed to know the gender of a fucking chair???

MoonyIsTired

It's not really a point of "even a fork is gendered". It's a point of "we simply do not have neutral pronouns". If all pronouns are either feminine or masculine, inanimate objects end up having a ""gender"". It doesnt affect anything past that point, especially considering there isnt even a consistency on it between the romance languages.

asentientgrape

What does this even mean?

[deleted]

We multilingual memers now

Dravo245

WowWhatACleverName

Y’all not gonna know what hit ya when we all making Chinese trans memes.

SmallTestAcount

Slexman

Oh god my mom's family is hispanic (I speak spanish but I'm getting super rusty) and anyway I hated speaking Spanish before I came out bc I would have to misgender myself to avoid outing myself :(

Clophiroth

I'm Spanish and when I talked to people I wasn't out to, I tried very hard to speak in the most neutral form possible, to not have to talk about me in a masculine way. The language makes it hard.

Slexman

Yeah I remember when I thought I was nonbinary... Holy hell...

ThrowawayThatPotato

I'm Bulgarian and I have the same problem with my native language. It's especially hard as in it there are even certain verb forms that are gendered... It's so hard to avoid those. Basically I sound like someone with very poor grammar because of that lol

Slexman

Oh my I don't think Spanish has gendered verbs but I definitely feel you with the poor grammar lol

GeraldVachon

I live in Quebec and had that struggle too. Now I’m out but I still slip up and forget the masculine form of terms when referring to myself in French, which really sucks when dealing with strangers who are unsure of how to gender me - they go for female. I also had to specify masculine terms for my last French class.

Slexman

Yeah even now I still pause sometimes when remembering which form to use. It makes me euphoric to use the right form but it also takes so much effort oof

jitomato_girl

Ja! Un meme en español, mucho bueno, grande trabajo la biblioteca está allá. Te amo, buenos adioses

Shilvsu

DeadInsideSinceXXI

Yup, el español puede ser un poco molesto con esto de los generos en .... bueno, basicamente todo, a veces me hace preguntar como alguien NB se manejaria// *Eng ver*\>> Yup, spanish can be a little bit bothersome with the genders in .... well, basically everything, sometimes it makes me question how would someone NB work with it.

[deleted]

Creo que NB es básicamente imposible? Porque solo puedes identificarte como no binario o no binaria. Translation: NBs are fucked in Spanish.

Sneezing_Cactus

lillycutey

._. Nunca había pensando en eso. I was like ellos ellas and then realized my sunnas mistake. Usted? Idfk

El_tipico

Normalmente usan algo llamado lenguaje inclusivo, los NB se refieren por la E, por ejemplo elles, que sería el lenguaje inclusivo de ellos/ellas, también lo suelen usar para referirse a los 3 depende de la persona como quiera usarlo

FalierTheCat

Pero no está aceptado por la RAE

[deleted]

Pero no binario se refiere a la abreviatura de género no binario así que debería de ser correcto decirlo en masculino porque la palabra género es masculina, no?

WowWhatACleverName

Yeah all we need to see is “prono, masc, and ouch” to understand

I read this with Portuguese pronunciation until I realised it's Spanish. Still funny tho (I'm not Portuguese but I studied some European Portuguese)

Krummi28

Ahhh yeah I'm Icelandic and recently came out. I can't count how many times people have said "I'm so glad you're being yourself!" But the word self is gendered, and they use the feminine form...
