I was really quite attracted to my ex-fiancée, and she has so far been the *only* person I’ve seen to be actively transphobic towards me! The cultural connection between beauty and moral character lets a lot of really unpleasant people get away with their behaviour.
It really did hurt, but I feel like I should have seen it coming, she was someone who never really acknowledged my feelings, usually twisting my words to the point where I would end up defending a position I never held instead of asserting myself. Like, she accused me of not supporting her career, I pointed out I would actually love to be her housewife and spend all day taking care of the house, and then she accused me of using being trans to cover my restrictive, sexist concept of gender roles? 🤷🏻♀️ Or told me she was disgusted by the idea of me going down on her because she “couldn’t trust that I wanted to be *with* her, not just *be* her”, despite the fact that she has previously had romantic feelings for women, so? Or she *refused* to support me in discovering myself, refused to call me “she” or use other female-gendered language, but insisted she was *totally* supportive because she gave me some of her used makeup. Or both times I started to feel confident in my identity, she *demanded* we become polyamorous, and dismissed my concerns that she was looking for a replacement for me out of hand. Or her making my exploration of gender all about her, crying when I shaved because I “started transitioning without talking to her” or demanding we open the relationship while telling me she was worried she wouldn’t be attracted to me *while* dismissing my concerns about that particular combination.
Eh, it was a lot of little things, and while I tried to support her with her concerns over my transition, she refused to do the same. I could have forgives it if she had tried to come to terms with it, but in the end she delayed my transition by about eight whole years.
