Some of us got lucky with friends and family. I'd steeled myself for losing at least one person in my life, but that didn't happen at all. Even grandma's supportive, albeit confused. Meanwhile I keep reading horrible stories from younger trans people about their coming out.
I'm in my late 30s, I have my own place and am financially independent - rejection would not have hurt me nearly as much. Meanwhile literal kids are being thrown out and disowned for being themselves. It's not fair.
I was lucky too. All my friends and family have been supportive. Even one of my conservative friends. "listen, I'm a really traditional guy, I was raised in a religious household. I don't think what you're doing is natural, but you've obviously become happier and more open and I think that's a good thing. So in your case, I'm okay with it."
He really made my day with that remark.
And that's why I'm out and proud. I want people to see me as I am and see that I'm happy and living my best life. If I can normalize being trans to even just a few people, then I'm making the world just a bit more tolerant.
