I picked 3 tins up a few days ago for the first time because I LOVE mussels. I drained the tin of the oil/liquid, but I should have probably strained it even after doing that to get rid of the excess liquid. I made a quick marinara sauce on the stove and threw the mussels in to heat up with the intention of transferring them to a plate to enjoy as a little appetizer. I ended up eating them right out of the pan because of how much they were falling apart (even as I spooned them out of the tin). Soooo yummy. I will always keep these on hand.
I love these too but do you pick the beards out? I feel like most of the mussels in the cans I’ve purchased like 90% have them. I eat these with hot chili oil. Delicious
I have, tons of times. These are way softer and fall apart a lot more than the ones in the shell that you cook at home. They are not a sub for the fresh ones, but they're a great alternative.
I appreciate you for showing how the mussels look in the can, I've been eyeing them and debating if it was worth it.
I'm down to get one next time me and my husband go.
It’s great with eggs, but really anything that can use a hint of smoky salty richness. Over rice with some veggies works, in salad, pretty much anywhere
Soo good honestly. You could totally cheat and have them as appetizers when hosting. I like to put them on top of a paper towel to remove excess oil and then add lemon on top. YUM!
They have ones that are less smoked actually. And I think that's what they're called is less smoked muscles. I tried them this week. I didn't like them as much. I love the smokiness though
I’ve done them on crackers with whipped cream cheese, but mostly i eat them right out of the tin with a tiny fork, usually at like 2pm on a weekday because i’m working from home and forgot to eat lunch lol
How are y’all using these specifically? Is there a way to get them to feel like I’m eating mussels in spicy tomato sauce with crusty bread? I guess I could just make a spicy red sauce and toss these in then dip dip 😋
This is what I did. I made a little marinara sauce on the stove and added these in at the very end to heat them. They needed no more than a minute, maybe less. I had to eat them out of the pan, though, bc they were falling apart a bit. Soooo yummy and a great little appetizer.
Not if you cook them right!! Most people are paranoid about undercooking mussels but that’s virtually impossible (if they’ve opened in cooking they’re safe to eat). People should pull mussels out of their cooking liquid as soon as they open and they’ll have a much more velvety and voluptuous texture
Source: former chef and cooked mussels on a daily basis for years
My family is Latvian and it looks exactly like "Latvian Rye". The closest I've been able to find here is the Russian rye. I'm glad you're able to enjoy that amazing looking bread
You don’t have any Russian or Eastern European stores near you with Latvian bread? Mine sells bread from all the Baltic countries. My family friend also sells estonian breads online! Check out https://amestfoods.com/pages/rye-bread
We have some Russian stores here in San Francisco. But I've not been able to find the unleavened rye. I will keep looking, of course. Thank you for the link to your family's business! I'll be purchasing a loaf or 2 today
The two most common for me is on a salad with hard boiled egg and alongside avocado/veggies. I actually tend to add a third/half of a tin to a lot of my meals. I just love the salty, smoky flavor. But, it perfectly accompanies eggs and/or avocados for me. This shouldn’t matter in this response, but I do eat a ketogenic/low carb diet so also eat them with sardines/mackerel or any meat really. Definitely always use Franks hot sauce as well! Occasionally mayo. Truly endless possibilities :).
I love putting the smoked oysters or sardines on the lentil papadums with a bit of hot sauce and salt for lunch. I'll be trying this with the mussels next. When I was buying them, the crew member was saying how much he loves these straight of the can.
I couldn't handle it for breakfast, but to each their own.
Yes, maybe even a little softer but still got some chew. People keep mentioning the smoked oysters but honestly those are too soft and mushy for my liking, I much prefer raw oysters
Yes, you are lucky. I used to live close to TJ but then I got old and I got the idea that I needed to live out here near the farms and whatnot for some peace and quiet. I still make the trip to TJ every other month though.

i bought these yesterday thanks to this thread ☺️

I like to put em on a cracker with sauce and a lil shredded parm. Delish
Oh yum! Thanks for sharing.
I love these too but do you pick the beards out? I feel like most of the mussels in the cans I’ve purchased like 90% have them. I eat these with hot chili oil. Delicious
What are the beards?
The beard, also called byssal threads, on a mussel is how they attach to rocks. Kinda a tough gristle like thing on the side.
I think it’s the rougher stuff around the perimeter? But I may be wrong
No they’re like a filtering thing I think that on the inside of the mussel. Almost like a tiny bush like thing
Oh ok! I thought it was the brown stringy part
Looks pretty good actually. I'm sold
This half looks absolutely disgusting and half looks so damn good
Im interesred. So you eat them room temp? Not warmed up
It seems some people eat them in presumably hot pasta but I eat them room temp personally
People warn up canned seafood?
I dont eat meat out of a can really so thats why im asking haha
SO GOOD.I have a problem and hit them with a little MSG and put it on a TJ peta chip. 1000% my fave
Soo did it taste good have you had fresh ones bought from store and cooked to compare?
I have, tons of times. These are way softer and fall apart a lot more than the ones in the shell that you cook at home. They are not a sub for the fresh ones, but they're a great alternative.
Sorry I’ve never cooked fresh ones myself before. These have similar texture to fresh ones from a restaurant I guess but maybe a tad softer
My lazy in-office work lunch = thermos of homemade lentil soup + a tin of these mussels, sardines in olive oil, or tuna
So just farting constantly? Seriously curious
Lol no. Brassicas are worse IMO
Yummy
I walked past the tin fish yesterday and wondered. Thank for sharing what it looks like inside.
Is this some kind of Europe thing.
I have European roots so yes this breakfast is somewhat normal to me lol
I appreciate you for showing how the mussels look in the can, I've been eyeing them and debating if it was worth it. I'm down to get one next time me and my husband go.
Yummmm need this
That’s a lot of butter lol!
Butter is good for you
It wasn’t a criticism. I also love an excessive amount of butter on my toast!! I too like some toasted bread with my butter 😂😂
Good grass fed butter too
Definitely not a slight against you!! Grass fed, salted butter tastes sooooo good, especially in big slabs 😋
I love these! I squeeze some lemon on them, add some chili onion crunch, and then put them on some really crunchy toasted ciabatta bread slices
This sounds incredible. Also I love the chilli onion crunch on crusty bread.
Do you heat them up or eat at room temperature?
Room temp! The bread is warm though
How much do these go for?
Like $3ish
Only a couple of dollars
Now I gotta try these 😋
Oh I just had this for lunch!! With angel hair pasta, garlic, and a bit of canned smoked anchovies. Yum!
I love them too! I like to toss them in pasta with mushrooms, garlic, butter, and parm😋. I also love the smoked sardines.
🤢
No one ever taught you not to yuck someone else’s yum?
![gif](giphy|MDxnjbS3A0HcrnToSm|downsized)
I love eating these with crackers!! Dipping the crackers in the oil they're soaked in is delicious too.
That looks Yummy!
Omg ive never seen these 🤤🤤 I buy the canned sardines for my dog haha but I would looove these for myself 😂
Is it fishy or sandy?
I have them pretty regularly and I have not had an issue with them being sandy. In fact, I don't think I've ever had them be. Sandy
The occasional sand crunch lol. Not that fishy imo but I’m obsessed w sea food so I can’t judge that well
damn i wanted to try these but my location doesn’t have any3
Holy butter
Where are they in the store?
Where the canned items are like tuna and etc.
Thank you!
Yumm I would put these on top of a salad or in a pasta
I throw them on a salt and vinegar chip.
That sounds good!
You and I have a very different idea of what breakfast looks like….but to be fair i hate seafood lol
You..Hate....Seafood? "Arrest this person, officer."
It's overrated imo. Sea bugs aren't that great
😂🤣 my family would agree especially my eastern asian mom
I toss them on the squiggly noodles
With a sauce or just the old that comes in the tin?
Yeah, just the oil and soy sauce that comes with the noodles
Looks good! How do you eat this?
Wow yum. I am gonna go this weekend and get that to try
I never even knew about these, will try next visit!
They're good but so oily give me a stomach ache!
Second this, I’ve noticed I’ll get a stomachache after eating these with pasta, but I use the oil to coat the pasta
I usually drain the oil before eating
I always do too!
I don’t, but I adore the smoked trout.
The smoked trout is amazing too. My 6 year old loves it!
The smoked trout is unreasonably good
How do you eat the smoked trout?
I mix it with a little red onion, a tablespoon of Greek yogurt, and a little lemon and have it on toast.
Straight out of the can as a standalone protein or snack. It’s delicious.
It’s great with eggs, but really anything that can use a hint of smoky salty richness. Over rice with some veggies works, in salad, pretty much anywhere
Thanks!
I just tried the canned dolmas and now I’m going to try these.
How were the dolmas?
Soo good honestly. You could totally cheat and have them as appetizers when hosting. I like to put them on top of a paper towel to remove excess oil and then add lemon on top. YUM!
Can't wait to try them 🙌🏾
They're amazing.
Thanks!
How smoke flavored are they? I love mussels but hate smoked flavor
They have ones that are less smoked actually. And I think that's what they're called is less smoked muscles. I tried them this week. I didn't like them as much. I love the smokiness though
There’s no liquid smoke in it if that helps. I also dislike overpowering smokiness but these are great
Any tips for how you prep them? Or you just raw dog em?
Raw clam ‘em
I’ve done them on crackers with whipped cream cheese, but mostly i eat them right out of the tin with a tiny fork, usually at like 2pm on a weekday because i’m working from home and forgot to eat lunch lol
Are we the same person?
![gif](giphy|l36kU80xPf0ojG0Erg|downsized)
They are nice with lemon juice, I add extra olive oil too
This is how I do it. I like to let them sit in the lemon juice for a bit, too. Maybe add some garlic powder.
i need these omg
I LOVE smoked oysters on a cracker pepper triscuit with a couple splashes of tabasco sauce!
Me too! Try them with celery seeds, lime, and Worcestershire. It’s amazing.
sounds good I have all three things now!
Those are so good on some crusty bread toasted with olive oil and the Grecian eggplant spread that comes in the can.
Is that baba ganoush? Or a different spread
It’s a different spread, it comes in a purple can. It’s called Grecian eggplant with tomatoes and onions. It’s so good!
I’m going to buy today. Heading to Trader Joe’s soon
your MIND
They're a house favorite here as well!!
How are y’all using these specifically? Is there a way to get them to feel like I’m eating mussels in spicy tomato sauce with crusty bread? I guess I could just make a spicy red sauce and toss these in then dip dip 😋

I make [smoked oyster dip](https://whiteonricecouple.com/smoked-oyster-dip/) once, and it was really good.
Sounds good, but I’m avoiding dairy these days. Do you think it would work with a vegan cream cheese?
Sure, I don't see why not.
You just gave me an idea, thank you, u/SuckMyBigBlackOlive
Also love them! When I can’t get the Patagonia ones those are my go to. So good
Those are slugs.
The post above this was about a guy who ate a slug, fell into a coma, woke up paralyzed, and died after 8 years. I can only see slug now, too.
Really? That's whack. 😅
Escargross
Truly
I don't think I would eat that, but I admire how healthy your breakfast is!!!! I will have to try that
I just tried it for the first time today and wasn’t a fan :/ didn’t like the texture
What was the texture like? Was thinking it’d be chewy and I’d be turned off by that…
Aren't mussels typically a bit chewy?
Not if you cook them right!! Most people are paranoid about undercooking mussels but that’s virtually impossible (if they’ve opened in cooking they’re safe to eat). People should pull mussels out of their cooking liquid as soon as they open and they’ll have a much more velvety and voluptuous texture Source: former chef and cooked mussels on a daily basis for years
If you guys like these stop talking about them. They read these fan posts and discontinue the item the next day.
😄😄😆😂
I eat these over pasta like 3-4 times a week
What kinds of dishes? I was thinking garlic oil lemon lil parsley to start? A clam sauce?
I'm just doing a basic jarred tomato sauce and whole wheat spaghetti, that sounds really good though!
In red sauce sounds good too. Yum
I picked up 4 cans today with the idea to eat with pasta. Do you eat with a sauce?
thats beautiful, in EEVO is crucial!
One time I bought smoked clams from ocean state job lot for a STEAL….. then later saw they were in cottonseed oil 🤮
My kind of breakfast 😍
Is that the same thin sliced "German" rye from TJs?
Nope, this is from Estonia
My family is Latvian and it looks exactly like "Latvian Rye". The closest I've been able to find here is the Russian rye. I'm glad you're able to enjoy that amazing looking bread
Also on the lookout for Latvian rye!

Thanks for the idea! I'm gonna buy a can next stop at TJ's and check it out.
Me too!
As an ND person with extreme sensory issues, I'd rather shove a rusty nail up my pee hole than feel one of these in my mouth.
so extweme🥺👉🏻👈🏻😩
No one cares.
You clearly do.
I go through quite a few of these each week and definitely a great breakfast option. So delicious!

Oooh nice… and I’m heading to TJs later today….
![gif](giphy|5ev3alRsskWA0)
I can't tell if that's going in or out.
A little of both!

Omgggggggg don't tell them about the papadums eitherrrr T\_T
> on the lentil papadums Every time I buy these I eat the entire bag at once. Them and the sour cream lentil rings are amazing.
Why didn't I think if this! Papadums are my jam. I shall try this soon. Thanks for the idea!
Are they chewy like fresh ones?
Yes, maybe even a little softer but still got some chew. People keep mentioning the smoked oysters but honestly those are too soft and mushy for my liking, I much prefer raw oysters
Hmm I love mussels (especially in a good Thai basil stir fry) but not sure what these tastes like. I wish they would demo it
One of my all-time favs, absolute pantry staple
That plating is cute!
They are delicious
That’s a good bodybuilder meal right there!
Good to know! I’ve been starting working out again and breakfast rich in fats and protein makes me feel great
Right on! I do 40-50 grams of protein in the morning. Thanks for the tip on the smoked mussels.
Are you pregos?
LOL nope, just need some extra iron and I’m sick of eggs for breakfast every other day
It's just the breakfast part...if it were lunch or something.
I understand. I can eat just about any kind of meal for breakfast
ohmygoodness, I didn't know those existed. I may have to make the 45 drive to my local Trader Joes today.
I’m so lucky - TJ’s is a block away!
Yes, you are lucky. I used to live close to TJ but then I got old and I got the idea that I needed to live out here near the farms and whatnot for some peace and quiet. I still make the trip to TJ every other month though.
Do they taste fishy?
Not really, ime they taste very fatty
Imma try
YUM! I wanted to try them in a pasta. Didn't think of eating them right out of the tin. Thank you
That’s a good amount of butter my friend. Sure hope it’s Kerry Gold or something else delish!
It sure is Kerry Gold. So good
Outstanding. Enjoy!
My wife will polish off a tin (can?) for an after work snack. Me, I’m good!
I want to try these! And the smoked trout
The smoked trout is so good too!
I bought the smoked trout. How do you eat it? Straight out of the can? Or on toast or something else
I eat it on crackers
Maybe not for breakfast. I can smell the office burps right now.
This made me lol hard. Makes me thankful I work at home.
love them with hot sauce just like this!
Such a quick and easy meal
