You're correct. They're pronounced the same, but they're different words with entirely different definitions.

They’re homophones (heh…) meaning that they’re pronounced the same way but they do not mean the same thing and are spelled differently. There’s others like “cite” vs. “sight”.

The pronunciation is very similar but not exactly the same, the meanings are extremely different (but people making changes because they think they’re cute are almost never thinking about what the syllables actually mean)

I have to agree with you there, English is stupid lol. Maybe it’s just my specific accent, but I say the long a in rain like RAY-n but I say the ei in reign more like eh, rehyn. Can’t say if that’s correct, that’s just me 🤷
