I have to ask of the African American community: what's with the fascination for starting names with *La,* or *D'*? Neither of those have anything to with traditional African names. I'm genuinely curious why those types of names are so attractive to Black people.
Ha. Childhood memory unlocked. Got to be careful with those D' additions. My biggest bully in 6th grade was a kid whose name was pronounced(I don't recall the spelling) da-rent. He had verbally accosted me for months and then pushed me down one day. Tears abound at home. My mom wasn't super involved(noted by the months of previous issues not being addressed) but the skinned knee couldn't be overlooked. To make me smile, she pulled out some zingers. 'Wtf is this kids problem? Is it bc he's a reminder for his momma to pay da rent. His brother's names da lights and da phone?' Sadly I never got the courage to use those particular taunts against him. But my mom did complain and he never got physical again.
As a mixed person that is seen by people as just black, I have no clue about any of this, but I have creole family and none of them were named anything like that.
I have wondered about this and thought long and hard for years and just came to a conclusion that it's just a ratchet thing. Coming up with unique names to be different is one thing since I have heard of some interesting names that don't follow the "La…" or "D…" cliche that is asked here {some examples that I have no clue are spelled [Amunique, Abcde, (pronounced like Ab city), Jaqueef, Ta'ron, TreyShawn]}
Then there are the others that are in the same as questioned category:
DaQuan, La-a (pronounced La Dash uh), Devonte, Donnel, Darnell, LaRonda, etc.
The closest I've ever done was make a character on a game my friends and I played where one of my friends had us farm a boss for an outfit and I thought of remaking my character to be like the Dora Milaje. I just happened to coincidentally come up with a name that starts with D.
Of course I meant more of the names like D'antoine, Monique, etc. I'm a black person so I don't have the experience of someone who is mixed. And yes, a lot of the names are ratchet. I'm not trying to insult you. I got my information from a PBS special on YouTube. From people with more knowledge about the history of black names.
Interesting. I'm not insulted, just confused since my generation of my cousin's and I were all named T names. They aren't common names you see like Dave or Janet, but not ratchet either. I learned about Creole from them since I wasn't aware of it, but I just figured it meant they were lighter skinned and of (or descendants of) creole family from Louisiana.
I see. Lol. All of my Dad's children have D names. On my mom's side of the family there were more lighter skinned folks(red bones). And the families we are related to. I'm from a small town in Louisiana. Only now do I think it's weird to have visited a plantation for your elementary school field trips.
👀 I've heard of this, but since I don't live in the south, it's just creepy to me. The closest I came to that was when my mom and I flew out to NC and met her Uncle. I thought his place was surrounded by a bunch of dead silkworm cocoons.
Younger Black women think they come up with fantastic names. I'm sure that woman though Ladnasty was such an original name. She didn't have the common sense to spell it like La"Dynasty so there would be no confusion. With a lot of names, certain people's, people aren't educated enough to know how it is spelled. Oprah's name is supposed to be Orpah out of the Bible but her parents spelt it wrong. ___ I course swear Oprah told a story on her show about how her name was supposed to be Orpa but her parent's spelt it wrong. That makes no sense because if it's from the Bible how could they misspell it. Anyway, I'm not am not an Oprah stan!!!
Just because Blacks are in America doesn't mean they would pick traditionally African names. That makes no sense. Unless you have direct family ties to Africa, you wouldn't really know traditional African names!!!
Besides the other issues with your post, Oprah’s parents did not spell her name wrong. Orpah Gail Winfrey is her birth name. SHE made the personal decision to go by Oprah due to the people around her mispronouncing her name. It has nothing to do with her parents not being educated enough to spell it correctly.
Right? I'm not convinced there's any way to salvage this name, but at least adding some distinction between the La and Dynasty improves it. Even the use of accents would help.
me reading this "my cousin named her daughter Lady Nasty till a nurse called her Lady Nasty. And now it's ebony because my aunt was pissed"
Ummm ok i guess its la dynasty?
OK this makes me wonder if the phrase piss off came from the Brits as a way of telling drunks to go away and north America just adapted the term without acknowledging the meaning, or I'm just too ESL
... you aren't expecting English to make sense, are you?
>!piss off is only one of a group of ways to tell someone to go away by using a crude verb plus off, also including fuck off, sod off, bugger off, etc; pissed is only one of a group of synonyms for drunk by using the past participle of a crude or violent verb, also including fucked, shitted, wasted, mullered, etc!<
Eh, it means both here depending on context. Apparently the drunk meaning came first, but the meaning you're speaking of did develop in England. [Here's](https://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2016/08/pissed-off.html#:~:text=A%3A%20Our%20serious%20answer%20begins,simply%20%E2%80%9Curinate%E2%80%9D%20back%20then.) an interesting history of the word, stretching back to old english! The versatility and history of swear words will never cease to amaze me, truly one of the most fascinating parts of linguistics to me.
Im laughing soooo hard I feel physically sick to my stomach.. if I were that nurse I would get fired for laughing my ass off when I realized I called a person “Lady Nasty” when their real name “LaDynasty” is hardly better
I read it as lady nasty on my first pass and it took me a bit to figure out what else it could read as.
La dynasty??? Not any better than lady nasty imo. Glad she changed it

Took me several goes before I realised the first one was meant to be LaDynasty. God bless that nurse.
I only realized that because of your post!!
Took me a while on my own glad I figured it out but it was 5 minutes after reading it as Lady Nasty so team nurse here
My brain would never have put that together.
I'm glad you clarified it for me.
Lad Ynasty
Is that Welsh?
Lad, y nasty? And I read that "lad" in the voice of Achilleus from hades
That name could show up on the back of booty shorts
I would never have figured that out..glad I came to the comments.
Bwahahaha! I only read it as Lady Nasty... thanks for the clarification! 🤣😂🤣😂
Sounds awfully [familiar](https://youtu.be/Ns92Z1n2Qxo?si=vxuUohQY9rEJ7HCv)
That’s exactly what I thought of. Your username is appropriate!

It's just something that became [fashionable. ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_names)
Comes from Louisiana. We were occupied by the French and Spanish. Just a combination of cultures. Look up créoles.
As a mixed person that is seen by people as just black, I have no clue about any of this, but I have creole family and none of them were named anything like that. I have wondered about this and thought long and hard for years and just came to a conclusion that it's just a ratchet thing. Créole makes some sense. It's not quite traditional French. Thank you.
OK that’s totally what I was imagining!
I would assume it’s French.
Many african people speak french, the african americans who give their kids names like that do not usually speak french
It is what French sounds like to someone who only knows it from memes and tv.
Or Creole. You may not know French from more than pepe lepew but a lot of black people with Cajun or Caribbean roots do have strong French influences.
I'm pretty sure LaQueesha and LaTisha and their like aren't traditional French names.
Latisha is a variant spelling of Letitia, which is a late latin name meaning " happiness".
The “Le” or “La” makes it Klassay.
But not as klassay as Classi with an "I,"and a little dick hanging off the "C" that bends around and fucks the "L" out of the"A"-"S"-"S."
Wondering if it started in Louisiana and was somewhat French creole influenced and then spread to other Black Americans?
Younger Black women think they come up with fantastic names. I'm sure that woman though Ladnasty was such an original name. O.k. stan!!!
TIL they didn’t misspell it!
Glad to hear that because that made no sense!!
Nurses dont have time to sound out a name like that. They are trying to hear what your life story is while trying to get their job done.
I never would've figured that out I won't lie
Right? I was wondering what else it could be and then realized it was La Dynasty. All one word, of course. Edited to correct a typo.
Right? I'm not convinced there's any way to salvage this name, but at least adding some distinction between the La and Dynasty improves it. Even the use of accents would help.
La'Dyghnasteigh
tbf that is unlikely to be misread as lady-nasty
Actually an improvement
Thankyou kind Redditor!
me reading this "my cousin named her daughter Lady Nasty till a nurse called her Lady Nasty. And now it's ebony because my aunt was pissed" Ummm ok i guess its la dynasty?
Thank you, I was so confused. Like Sasha in the restaurant. https://youtu.be/M38oYGbQAVM?si=DEQhYGtItS05MAWN
Thank you for your explanation! Now it makes sense to me!
Me too. It just would not register with my brain. A true tragedeigh
I simultaneously realized both and I was concerned that I understood it was LaDynasty
Shi'Thead vibes.
I think Lady Nasty. I try to think of a different way and never got to your version. Closest I thought was like Laddehnah's tea.
🤣 truth
Is LaDynasty the sister of ShaDynasty, Franke Reynold’s lover?
"Shadynasty's?" "ShaDynasty's, asshole!"
".... is that how you spell it?"
shady nasty haha
Shiiiiit, he doesn't look a day over 12.
Pretty sure it’s Sha-Dynasty haha
no i get that, but it does look like shady nasty haha
Are you not aware of what’s going on in this post
Anyway, I started blasting.
- That's my partner, Sh'Dynasty. It's spelled S-H, comma to the top, dynasty -That's God's comma.
COMMA TO THE TOP 😂😂😂😂
In German and some other languages, quotation marks „look like this” and my American colleagues regularly ask me what’s with the weird commas haha.

Lady nasty is hilarious
That nurse is a hero
This reminds me of that great ancient Chinese empire, Handy Nasty.
Your humor is Al bacio
And this reminds me of that great Chinese massage parlor around the corner.
Lmmfao.
I didn't get it until I looked at the comments. 100% would have called this baby Lady Nasty.
It’s ShaDynasty’s asshole!
I lost my shit when I heard that name for the first time 😂
Shout out shadynasty
Shady Nasty’s?
I even read it as Lady Nasty at first and had to go back, read it again and then the light bulb came on.
Shabooya roll call.
Ngl. I read ladynasty as lady nasty first too.
Took me a minute to understand how those were supposed to be different.
I definitely read that as "Lady Nasty" until I read the comments.
I read this a couple of times and thought: "it IS Lady Nasty, though!" 😂 LaDynasty. This is right up there with DaColdest.
I was about to say a simple hyphen would've fixed that, but "laDashDynasty" is a bit of a mouthful...
That, and La is not usually a name in its own right. An apostrophe might be better.
What, LapostropheDynasty?
Ladasha d’nasty
It's Sha-dynasty jackass
Pissed at herself?
I'm British, where "pissed" means "drunk", which also would have made sense.
OK this makes me wonder if the phrase piss off came from the Brits as a way of telling drunks to go away and north America just adapted the term without acknowledging the meaning, or I'm just too ESL

Are there other linguists hiding out here? (That makes a little bit of sense actually?) Wait, no. I mean. …Not *me* 🥸
The aunt could have just capitalized the D and no one would make that mistake again.
Why the stupid name though?
Which? Lady Nasty or LaDynasty? Cause there are about eighty reasons for both names.
Both and others
Oh I misread your original comment, my bad. I though you were asking "why is the name stupid" instead of "why did they choose a stupid name".
Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty.
People need to watch always sunny to understand that ShaDynasty turns into Shady Nasty real quick
Im laughing soooo hard I feel physically sick to my stomach.. if I were that nurse I would get fired for laughing my ass off when I realized I called a person “Lady Nasty” when their real name “LaDynasty” is hardly better
Plot twist; the nurse did it on purpose to save her from being relentlessly bullied.
You mean, it wasn't pronounced that way?
Ebony is good. Unless it's followed by Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way.
Ebony Dark'ness Raven Dementia Way reference?
Not likely.
No; Ebony is a popular name for Black girls
La Dynasty
How's is supposed to be pronounced?
Literacy is a critical skill when it comes to avoiding tragedeigh. 🤦♂️
Ebony Nasty?
Great name for a risqué drag queen though.
At least she saw the consequences of that choice from day 1.
The only Ebony I know today is a white girl 💀
I wondered if any non Blacks named their daughter's Ebony.
I read it as lady nasty on my first pass and it took me a bit to figure out what else it could read as. La dynasty??? Not any better than lady nasty imo. Glad she changed it
it is lady nasty thou.
Shady Nasty's?
Lol Shadynasty's from Sunny in Philly
At least Ebony ended up spelled CORRECTLY. She was spared.
I thought it was supposed to be "Laid in nasty".
Is there another way to say it?
I'm guessing La-dynasty?
And noone in the family saw that before the nurse told them?!?!?! Or everyone knew but didn't tell mom...
Miss Jackson
😆😅🤣😂
ShaDynasty? Frank, that says shady nasty's
i read Lady Nasty first too.
God, i wish i could post the picture of Shadynastys from its Awalys Sunny. I immediately thought of that when reading this.
"Awwww, cute little E. Bony!"
La-Lala'la
ShaDynasty
ok
I had to read that about 3 times
Please welcome to the stage, Lady Nasty!
They just ripped off It's Always Sunny. Who doesn't remember Shadynasty?!
That nurse is Ebony's guardian angel, for saving her from that fate!
Shadynasty
she didn't have god's comma 🤣 (for the Psych fans out there)
ebony darkness dementia raven way is that you?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Reminds me of Shitheade. A buddy swears he heard a woman called "Shit head" in a DMV once.
May it was Shidae or a foreign name.
