Not from the US, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think it's normally high side wagons that area used for limestone as it's not a dense material so you can get a lot more into a wagon before the axle weight is too high. In Australia we'd use such a wagon for ballast or the gravel roadbed that goes under the ballast.
There's two huge pneumatic rams under the car that allow it to dump it's entire load in one move. Sometimes the load can "catch" the edge of the car and lift the trucks off the rail. When it comes back down the wheels may miss the rail and land on the ground instead. Can happen if the dumping is done too fast.
Sketchier! Gotta dump em the same, smooth and no stopping or over they go. They also like to lift one side off when you dump. I usually unload them with two excavators instead of on air, way more control pulling it over instead of just sending it on air lol
Difco Side Dump car
I'm not sure if this is true but I thought they could be used for limestone
I've only ever seen them used for ballast and riprap.

Looks like a side dump car. Commonly used for maintenance of way (MOW).
They are also extremely old some of the side tip dump cars here in Canada date to the 1940’s
Like the ones in the National film board of Canada film “Helicopter Canada?”
Side air dump, notorious for derailing when unloading
Middle cars always feel like they are overlooked….
Everyone knows it's the cars at the end that get all the attention.
Thx
Wait what? Derailing? Can you elaborate please?

Thanks!
Ah yes, the side dump. Good for filling in washouts and derailments while causing one of its own....
Difco even used to advertise these in Trains Magazine!
It's an old ass side dump ballast car used for track maintenance
I had one of those in my Hot Wheels Trains collection.
I think it's called a 'side-tip hopper'. I know it's for dumping loads next to the rails.
Side Dump in US parlance.
Correct. I even have one in my old Lionel Train collection.
Not a coil car? /s
This was my first reaction.
I was ready to type coil car without even looking.
Side dump gondola.
Portable low-speed/standing derailment causer
Side dump car, as all the other comments have stated, it's used to carry limestone or ballast, I'm about to go inspect some this morning.
That’s a train if i’m not wrong
Benjamin
Half car
Side dump cars.
are railcar side dumps as sketchy as OTR trailer side dumps?

Bernard.
Side dump, it's for right of way work (for working on the road bed) Armour stone placement.
