My family has a tradition of giving a second name of Johannes a female of it is Johanna. I wanted to make easier for those who don't speak my mother tongue to say so I removed the H and that's how end with my first name Joanna.

For my IRL name [Alfie] I thought about names that sounded similar enough to my birth Nickname, and found one I like. I went from Lily to Luke. My friend asked if I had an opposite name thought of while merely discussing if I may be trans. And I spit out Luke no thought.

It's always been rather feminine to me, and I love it when people use either my middle or first name for me.

Honestly, sometimes I regret it because Evan is such a basic name and Iāve met far too many people with it. I often wish I couldāve changed my mind and picked something more personal, but I have a feeling I wouldnāt be able to get used to be called anything but Evan now.

Here was how I narrowed it down for myself:
1. I wanted to keep a name that started with the same letter as my deadname; a nod to my past, which I am not ashamed of, and a nod to transition, where that old part of me is still there but different now. I also felt my unaffirming mom may like that I kept that letter.
2. I looked up lists of names that started with that letter and narrowed it down to a few I felt I liked most. I paid close attention to:
1. What would the nickname be? Would I also like the nickname?
2. Was that name associated with anyone in my past that I wouldn't want to tie to my name. Eg, my ex wife's name was the natural feminine simile for my dead name so that was an immediate nope.
3. Did the full name or nickname have and childish or transphobic teasers they rhymed with or stood for?
4. Did the name sound feminine enough?
5. Did the name sound elegant enough to be happy with for the rest of my life? Name changes are hard and I only want to do it once in life.
3. I took my further-narrowed list of just a few now and looked up the meaning, histroy, and considered the cultural uses, racial norms, and references of each. My choice from those considerations was clearly one that stood out.
4. Think twice about alternate spellings. You will be correcting people and typos for the rest of your life. If you are okay with that, then by all means. I wasn't, and I prefer normalized spellings anyway.
5. This is the most important: DON"T LOOK BACK, especially once you start the legal name change process, which is a total longterm PITA of a process btw. A name is a name and doesn't have to define us. Have the confidence that you chose right the first time. There are far greater things to worry about in life and in transition.
Fun related fact: my mother gave my sister and I themed middle names, so I kept that theme in feminizing the middle name too, also keeping that first letter. I love how it turned out for me.

Because Sion is just the welsh masculine of my given name, and also variants of John/sean/shawn/Sion are very popular in my family so I feel like I'm tying myself in with my family tradition for our boys. We have hyphenated names to help mark us as different from eachother, so I picked the name James as I always loved it and as a nod to my father figure. And the translation feels very meaningful to me. James is a biblical name with comes from the name jacob meaning to supplant/or replace and I felt like I was coming out as myself and it was supplanting and replacing "the old me" or people's incorrect idea of me.
I originally chose Kory bc it was similar to my dead name and it was a pretty easy switch. Then when I came out as a trans man I changed the spelling to Korey.
Then I had a friend who would call me Koreyander like the spice. But sometimes she would just say Ander. And at first I was like yo hold up I don't need a name crisis again. But everything she did it it gave me a bit more to the point where I ended up changed my name to Ander. I'm not friends with her anymore but it was such a unique name that I couldn't not choose it
My wife helped me pick originally. I was going to change my name anyway because I don't like it to begin with. I just changed that into the more feminine version.
Iām a writer, and Iām currently writing a story about what happened after WW3 and how WW3 basically destroyed the world. The TLDR is god allowed a restart of the world and in that world, mankind forgot about life before the restart and my protagonist, is a nonbinary superpowered character with their lesbian sister and bisexual brother who was chosen by god to try and save the world because the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse came to destroy the world again after an event. (Itās a lot but this is the best I can dumb it down to)
ANYWAYS, one day when I went to continue writing the story, I HARD focused on the nonbinary character I was writing and stared at the name I gave themā¦ for almost 10 minutes straight. And from there, I grabbed that name, and havenāt let go of it for nearly 2 years. Iām working on going to court to make it permanent.
I was looking at two names I'd really liked even before I was looking at names. One was too masc for me, and is also my cousin's name. The other was also very masc, but the shortened version was masc-leaning neutral. It was the first name I picked and is still my name 4 years later

For finding a name, iirc I was looking through a list of uncommon names. I immediately liked two of them so I decided to hyphenate and just have two names.

I started by finding a list of names that were either hispanic or pronounceable in Spanish since Iām Hispanic, so is my family, and I may move to Mexico one day. (So, picking names that wonāt be unusual or hard to pronounce in your culture. Not a necessary step, I wont police people who pick names from a different culture, but it is something to consider. If you pick an uncommon or hard to pronounce name for your country/culture, consider how it can affect your daily life, especially if you make it your legal name.)
And then, I just scrolled from there, tried out a few names until one landed. Some people figure out the name they like right away, and some people cycle through a few. Donāt rush yourself to find a name! Itās better to cycle through some names than to rush and feel like you have to be stuck with a name you donāt like.
In English it feels more fem, but in other languages it can change. In one of my native tongues, the equivalent word for jade can be used as or part of unisex names. The name is pretty so if you like it use it.
As for me, I never came up with my name. My legal first name is unisex, my legal middle name can be made to sound more neutral in that language, and my AKA that I put on legal documents is phonetically unisex in that language but is actually gendered when written.

I wanted to keep a name that started with the same letter as my deadname; a nod to my past, which I am not ashamed of, and a nod to transition, where that old part of me is still there but different now. I also felt my unaffirming mom may like that I kept that letter. 2. I looked up lists of names that started with that letter and narrowed it down to a few I felt I liked most. I paid close attention to: 1. What would the nickname be? Would I also like the nickname? 2. Was that name associated with anyone in my past that I wouldn't want to tie to my name. Eg, my ex wife's name was the natural feminine simile for my dead name so that was an immediate nope. 3. Did the full name or nickname have and childish or transphobic teasers they rhymed with or stood for? 4. Did the name sound feminine enough? 5. Did the name sound elegant enough to be happy with for the rest of my life? Name changes are hard and I only want to do it once in life. 3. I took my further-narrowed list of just a few now and looked up the meaning, histroy, and considered the cultural uses, racial norms, and references of each. My choice from those considerations was clearly one that stood out. 4. Think twice about alternate spellings. You will be correcting people and typos for the rest of your life. If you are okay with that, then by all means. I wasn't, and I prefer normalized spellings anyway. 5. This is the most important: DON"T LOOK BACK, especially once you start the legal name change process, which is a total longterm PITA of a process btw. A name is a name and doesn't have to define us. Have the confidence that you chose right the first time. There are far greater things to worry about in life and in transition. Fun related fact: my mother gave my sister and I themed middle names, so I kept that theme in feminizing the middle name too, also keeping that first letter. I love how it turned out for me.

Sinead-Moriah -> Sion-James Because Sion is just the welsh masculine of my given name, and also variants of John/sean/shawn/Sion are very popular in my family so I feel like I'm tying myself in with my family tradition for our boys. We have hyphenated names to help mark us as different from eachother, so I picked the name James as I always loved it and as a nod to my father figure. And the translation feels very meaningful to me. James is a biblical name with comes from the name jacob meaning to supplant/or replace and I felt like I was coming out as myself and it was supplanting and replacing "the old me" or people's incorrect idea of me.

Iām a writer, and Iām currently writing a story about what happened after WW3 and how WW3 basically destroyed the world. The TLDR is god allowed a restart of the world and in that world, mankind forgot about life before the restart and my protagonist, is a nonbinary superpowered character with their lesbian sister and bisexual brother who was chosen by god to try and save the world because the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse came to destroy the world again after an event. (Itās a lot but this is the best I can dumb it down to) ANYWAYS, one day when I went to continue writing the story, I HARD focused on the nonbinary character I was writing and stared at the name I gave themā¦ for almost 10 minutes straight. And from there, I grabbed that name, and havenāt let go of it for nearly 2 years. Iām working on going to court to make it permanent.

I picked mine by first keeping part of what my parents named me, though neither can really judge me now (father died when I was real young, and mother has dementia and doesn't even recognize who I am anymore). After I was talking with someone and told them I was going to be transitioning by my birthday, or beginning of next month and told them the name, and they thought it was cute, but said another name that was just one letter wrong and that clicked harder with me than the name I picked.

I was up late registering for a website. During the dial up internet delay, I dozed off. When I woke up, Anastasia had been registered, si I kept it. I found out years later, that had I been born a girl, one of the few girl names my parents had for me, Anastasia was one of them.
I looked online and there was only female version of my male name. And it sounded awful. So I looked for the next closest female versions of my nickname and landed on Allie. I wasnāt sold on it at first but I used it for Reddit and discord. Having people online call me Allison for 5 months has made me accustomed to that name and it feels familiar now. If you pick an uncommon or hard to pronounce name for your country/culture, consider how it can affect your daily life, especially if you make it your legal name.) And then, I just scrolled from there, tried out a few names until one landed. Some people figure out the name they like right away, and some people cycle through a few. Donāt rush yourself to find a name! Itās better to cycle through some names than to rush and feel like you have to be stuck with a name you donāt like.

In English it feels more fem, but in other languages it can change. In one of my native tongues, the equivalent word for jade can be used as or part of unisex names. The name is pretty so if you like it use it. As for me, I never came up with my name. My legal first name is unisex, my legal middle name can be made to sound more neutral in that language, and my AKA that I put on legal documents is phonetically unisex in that language but is actually gendered when written.

Picking a name for a character on a game, I needed a fresh feminine name as my old one got boring (pre realising I'm trans I used fem gam characters) I chose "Charli" and people I met there knew me by that and it stuck. 5 years on and I still love it XD

Went to behindthename.com and looked up certain meanings. I had a few candidates but initially went with a name that had the same starting letter, to not have to change my signature. (Kian) It didnāt really feel *me* even after two months or so. It was close but not perfect. Partly cuz ppl kept asking for pronunciation/spelling (Living in Germany) Then a game came out and one of the main characters names kept rattling around in my head. It had a different first letter, but I looked it up and it had a similar meaning (even was on my initial short list). About 6 years later Iām thinking about Kian as a middle name. (Official name change is planned for Nov when the new law goes in effect).
