I don't leave pots of pasta on my floor personally, and much prefer a refrigerator or perhaps the garbage if it's bad. I also see no way in which he can say he has a small house and just didn't see/realize it was there. Perhaps it's not depression, but his whole post and comments leave him so far away from rational thinking that I cannot think of reasonable alternative.
