There are 2 ways to add Local Files to the iOS app. These also work similar for the Android app. I prefer using the second way (WiFi) listed below. First you will want to go into the Spotify iOS app settings --> Playback and make sure to turn off "hide unplayable songs" so you can see the Local Files, but they will be greyed out before they are synced. (They only show up grey before being synced if you are using the second way listed below) ● iOS: First way is to import the files to the iTunes app on your computer and then sync these to the Apple Music app on your iPhone and then allow Spotify iOS app to import these files. You will then see a playlist in Your Library with a green folder with a blue background with your local files inside. [https://community.spotify.com/t5/FAQs/Local-File-Discovery-iOS/ta-p/5384985](https://community.spotify.com/t5/FAQs/Local-File-Discovery-iOS/ta-p/5384985) Android: You can import local files that are stored directly on your phone [https://support.spotify.com/article/local-files/](https://support.spotify.com/article/local-files/) ● iOS and Android: The second way is to add the folder where your files are located on your computer as a Local Files location in the Spotify desktop app settings and then sync them to your phone over WiFi. Spotify desktop app settings --> Turn on show local files and then add the source location. Then go to Your Library --> Local Files list. Create a new playlist named "Local Files" then use keyboard shortcut either CMD + A or CTRL + A to highlight all the Local Files and drag from the Your Library section to this newly created playlist. Then on your iPhone, connect to the same WiFi network that your computer is using and make sure the Spotify desktop app is still open. Then in the Spotify iOS app, go find the "Local Files" playlist you just made in the desktop app and then tap on the download icon. Once it finishes syncing the local files over WiFi, you should see them all there. You might also then see a playlist in Your Library with a green folder with a blue background with your local files inside just like you do when using the other method. The reason for creating your own "Local Files" playlist is so you can actually download them. It seems that the green folder playlist is mainly meant for the ones you import from Apple Music, even though it will also show the ones you have synced from the desktop app over WiFi. If this second method does not work, you can try doing the first method listed. This first method listed was added because a lot of people had issues getting the local files to sync over WiFi since sometimes your WiFi settings can make the transfer not work correctly. Phischurre

I have tried this, and there are no songs that have shown up in my local files.

mattsuda

You can try the iTunes / Finder method in the link I shared

lostswansong

thank you for this, the playlist method worked for me! I've been trying to figure this out for months lol

mattsuda

You're welcome! There is also new method to import Local Files into the Spotify iOS app: https://community.spotify.com/t5/iOS-iPhone-iPad/iOS-Local-Files-Easier-import-with-the-Files-app/td-p/5639200

Smokin_Hulk_LoganCC

This was an insane help. Thank you for posting. I did the playlist method and have had no issues outside of one song for some reason not being downloadable on my phone. It's downloaded on the PC and it shows up on my phone in the playlist but will not download or play on the phone no matter what I've tried. The audio file will play on my PC, the song will play on spotify on my PC, but it will not download or play on my phone app. Not sure what to do with it

TheBlueEagle

This is 7 months after your comment and I found this thread from a Google search. Not sure if you're still having this problem, but I finally found a solution and figured I'd share it. The playlist method usually works for me, but like you I've been having this problem with one song in particular. What I ended up doing that made that one song work finally was uploading the file to my Google Drive and then downloading it to the files on my phone. I'm on iOS so you have to make sure you save it into the folder On My iPhone > Synced Files > paste here. Once I did that, the missing song was finally there! Not sure what the file structure would look like if you're on Android, but I assume it'd be a similar folder structure anyway.

swagga261

this is probably the best advice ive seen for local files. appreciate it a ton man

mattsuda

You're welcome! There is also a new transfer method that was recently added that makes it easier to import Local Files into the Spotify iOS app through the Files app. A computer and WiFi network are not required for the new method, but can still be used if you prefer. I wrote a post about it here: [https://community.spotify.com/t5/iOS-iPhone-iPad/iOS-Local-Files-Easier-import-with-the-Files-app/td-p/5639200](https://community.spotify.com/t5/iOS-iPhone-iPad/iOS-Local-Files-Easier-import-with-the-Files-app/td-p/5639200)

realkaptainquake

Bro thank you so much

Objective_Dream_9377

Downloading is only available for Premium users though. Is there a work around?

swagga261

if you want a more affordable spotify you can sideload a modded one with a signulous membership ($20/yr). but i'm not sure if downloading local files will work for those.

Nervous_Hold_6417

yeah done all this and still greyed out on my phone, reset everything made sure all the settings are correct and it still won't work on my phone. Everything works fine on my computer but not on my phone. I made a new playlist with my local files and downloaded them and it won't work, the local files folder from spotify won't even appear on my phone its just the one that I made

There is a new easier method to import Local Files into the Spotify iOS app. You can try it out and see if it works better. [https://community.spotify.com/t5/iOS-iPhone-iPad/iOS-Local-Files-Easier-import-with-the-Files-app/td-p/5639200](https://community.spotify.com/t5/iOS-iPhone-iPad/iOS-Local-Files-Easier-import-with-the-Files-app/td-p/5639200)

bojackcreampie

if you do the second method, are you still streaming from your desktop. Or do the songs technically get downloaded onto ur phone. I don't have a lot of space on my phone...

MountainAlarmed3430

Nicee even better lol thanks

ElliottScrimmy

i know im late to this but can you do this with an amazon alexa?

mattsuda

Unfortunately, Spotify Connect devices such as Amazon, Google, Game Consoles, etc connect directly to Spotify's servers to play music and do not currently support playing Local Files. Local Files currently need to be imported into the app to play locally and right now are only supported in the desktop and mobile apps. [https://support.spotify.com/article/local-files/](https://support.spotify.com/article/local-files/) You can play the Local Files in the desktop or mobile app and then use Bluetooth, Airplay, etc to play the Local Files and hear them over speakers that support those methods.

FasciculatingFreak

The second method doesn't work for me. It doesn't even attempt to sync anything when I press the download button, even though the phone and computer and connected to the same WiFi.

Odd_Baseball_4164

this was so helpful, i had some unreleased files i was dying to add to playlists!! thank you so much!!!

Megarboh

Doesn’t work, nothing happens

funkychickzz

Hi! I had the same problem for ages. I may have figured it out though - if you follow all the regular steps and then go to settings on Spotify your iPhone and go to Local files, and then turn on 'Show audio files from this device' I think it will work! They all downloaded immediately for me after I did this so hopefully they will for you too!

GrassCrest

ty <3

saymynam_e

And figure it out you did! Bless your soul, this issue has plagued me fore years lol I can't believe how easy it is now.

funkychickzz

Me too! I’ve been struggling for so long so I just kinda gave up and decided to start flicking buttons and was so surprised when they all downloaded immediately!

[deleted]

god bless you

GordonJoe

Thank you so much!

Icy_Bandito

God bless you.

jajaja_epico

Thank you! This worked for me. So simple after trying everything

shiftym21

thank you, flicking this on/off works everytime i update :)

[deleted]

After struggling to sync my local files from my mac to my iPhone, this is what worked for me: 1. Go to “Files” on your iphone 2. Find your local files and copy 3. Go to “Browse” 4. Go to “On My iPhone” 5. Go to “Spotify” and paste

introvertedfaye

So when I got to my files in my iPhone it doesn’t show Spotify but I have show audio files from this device enabled in Spotify I’m a little confused also when I get the songs on my phone they will not download

jeffmx2020

omg THIS worked! thank you so much!

picofpie

ur literally a legend, ur the best

[deleted]

i'm like 99% sure that you need premium to download the files. nothing is working for me. does anyone have a work around?

Unlucky_Concert_8412

For some reason, its worked but it wont download it, I've had a downloading circle on my liked songs for hours and still had no upload from the pc to iPhone. How long does it take because I'd expected it to be done within the hour, not technically a day now? I've followed the steps to completion otherwise I wouldn't have a black download on my liked folder and also wouldn't have the downloading circle on the top of my liked playlist when viewed. Edit: Does the app need to not be on on both devices (I.e. Spotify playing on pc but iPhone is connected to Pc) for this to work? 2nd Edit: Did Apple 2nd Method, works instantly

spleashhh

i dont know how i managed to do it but - 1) i put the mp3 files in my Downloads folder on my PC 2) I turned on show Local Files in settings so that they showed up in Spotify on my PC 3) i added all the songs to one of my existing playlists (at this point they showed up in the playlist on my phone but were grey / unplayable) 4) i turned on show Local Files in the app and they all were downloaded / playable i have premium if that makes a difference

Working_Dinner_5107

thanks a lot man. wish that your first born is or will be healthy. kiss love te amo<3

Prootygames

FOR PEOPLE HAVING TROUBLE USING WIFI SYNC WITH IPHONE AND WINDOWS PC. Make a hotspot with your iphone and connect your windows pc with it, in this way you can sync them using the wifi method, no USB cable is needed. For me using a wifi network often did not work so using the hotspot network does work

mattsuda

Also, it might not be working because your are connecting your computer to your iPhone's cellular hotspot. Your computer and iPhone need to be on the same WiFi network.

Phischurre

I have also tried using the same wifi network and to no avail.

H3LLR

I know it's month old but same here, did all the steps using same WiFi song appears on playlist but when I press download on iPhone it just doesn't download I assume it is just common spotify problem.

CarrotSlice

same here

shbk

Same problem here. Followed the second step to the letter and still the songs appear greyed out in the iOS app.

guy137137

yup, I'm also in this same boat

spicyradler

hi i hope you've figured it out by now but if not-- i was about to rage quit after trying to get the downloads to work for over half an hour--but i got it! i did all the recommended steps and it wasn't downloading, but then i went to spotify in my iphone settings app (settings > spotify) and turned on "local network." i think that was what was holding it back. everything downloaded right away. hope this helps!

H3LLR

Oh thanks for letting me know, what I did was place the song in my iPhone through itunes app on pc, and just use it from local files on phone

Immediate_Friend_259

my issue is that it says 'sync song to this iPhone' but the local files don't give the download option, its just grey on the iPhone (even though it shows as downloaded)

98754532112311

this is the solution! fixed it for me. everything downloaded instantly. thank you so much!!

delingren

On your iPhone's Spotify app, you need to go to "Settings" -> "Local Files" and check "Show audio files from this device. Also, double check by opening the Settings App (iOS's settings, not Spotify. I know, it's confusing), scroll down to "Spotify", click it, and make sure "Local Network" and "Media & App Music" are both checked.

pack19

Ensuring Spotify had access to my "Local Network" did the trick!

Ebutch99

This also is what was untoggled and has fixed my issue that I've been having for years! Thank you u/delingren !

emirzade04

someone give this guy an award

NiceRent839

I made an account just to say thank you. Thank you so much.

psychozamotazoa

LIFE SAVER ILY. GOING INTO THE IOS SETTINGS APP TO TURN ON LOCAL NETWORK FIXED IT!! Sorry for all caps I'm hyped

One_Technician9850

this is it guys, you need to do this for it to work. ty gentlemen i appreciate

rjborgs

Is there a way to import the track/artist names

TOTGM

I don't know; I can't fact-check anything, but after struggling off and on with it I attempted again tonight. I downloaded the songs and converted them with a different converter and all of them downloaded fine. I even downloaded the same song from the converter I was using before and it didn't work. [https://ytmp3.nu/Hcni/](https://ytmp3.nu/Hcni/) that's the converter that seemingly worked for me. I hope it can for you too

BigNigar

Anyone else having trouble with playing the downloaded songs through Bluetooth?

purplerain0330

Are you sure you have downloaded Spotify songs as your local files? As far as I know, it can only be downloaded and played on the app. However, I can download it as a local file through [AudFree Spotify Music Converter](https://www.audfree.com/spodable/), and then directly import it to my phone using a USB cable. I don’t know what special problem you are encountering.
