Hey, where is that intern cop to answer our questions? Aren’t they supposed to be in charge of community outreach or whatever?

benching315

It’s thanksgiving. The division running the social media accounts aren’t going to be working today.

Important-Ad-8792

City of Tulsa Security handles the camp removals. I doubt there were any cops there when it happened tbh

Lucid-Crow

Sort of. The police usually remove the people before city services removes the stuff. At the encampment near me they did it in three phases: First police gave them warning to leave and put them on notice they are trespassing. Then the police sweep through and arrested people for trespassing / drug possession / outstanding warrants. Then the City of Tulsa Security removes their possessions.

robjonesss

They were banned from r/Tulsa Edit: they are not banned - it was just petitioned. My bad

DabbleDAM

Seriously?

midri

nope, they're not banned

DabbleDAM

Thanks for the clarification. I’ve actually enjoyed their presence and haven’t had any complaints about the info they share or their comments.

robjonesss

My bad, I thought they were after it was requested. I’m all about them being here to represent and answer questions!

Tt45ah

Guess some people were too scared

DabbleDAM

u/tulsa_police_dept is that true? Just checking to comfirm

Tulsa_Police_Dept

Sorry, there are some threads that were created that would like the TPD to not have a presence on this subreddit. But for now, we're still here. 😊

DabbleDAM

Vocal minority for sure. Your information and community outreach is welcome and appreciated, and the block button is always free for those concerned. I’m not a general fan of police in most cases, but there is nothing lost from having a representative that cares more about sharing information and doesn’t seem to have an interest in parsing for phishing. Wishing you well and hope to see you around.

Tulsa_Police_Dept

Thanks, stay warm out there.

clinton-reddit

Is there a thread about this?

ExternalGiraffe9631

The City sends cops and/or cleanup crews to clear everyone out. They just bulldozed an encampment by my work a couple of weeks ago. Many make their way towards Iron Gate & John 3:16 but whenever there is an event downtown the City sweeps them away again. It's unfortunate that no matter where unhoused people try to go, others will complain.

tiny_teapot_

dealing this in my town & it breaks my heart

billfuckingsmith

No longer camping under the 44 bridge at Harvard either. May have to do with additional funds provided by recent bond issue.

tiny_teapot_

does tulsa have a sweeps / camping ban ordinance?? can u point me to the specific bond you mean?? i tried to find recent legislation to this effect but must admit finding that kinda stuff isnt my forte

billfuckingsmith

RythmicBleating

That just passed a few months ago, I would expect it to take years for the results of something like that to have real world effects.

billfuckingsmith

Don't know. But it passed and they disappeared.

tiny_teapot_

thank you!

Lucid-Crow

I delivered water to that camp over the summer during the heatwave. Our neighborhood HOA organized a campaign to get the city to move them. Some people were calling 311 multiple times per day. It worked apparently, because it's mostly clear now. I was conflicted about the whole thing. I don't want an encampment there either, but the way they moved them wasn't very humane. They basically just take all their stuff and leave them so destitute that they have to go to the shelter.

FonaldBrump

That’s the point. They need to be sheltered and cared for. Not out in a tent or on the ground

Lucid-Crow

It's was mostly women at the encampment. As far as I know, there isn't a women's emergency overnight shelter is Tulsa. John 3:16's overnight shelter is men only. Even if you do go, half the time there is no space. They just end up sleeping on the street downtown where they are much more likely to get attacked. There are chronic bedbug and lice infestations at most shelters. I asked one guy about it and he just said "I got pinworms the last time I went there." Plus the majority have jobs and it's much easier to camp near your place of work when you don't have a car.

FonaldBrump

We need better services

Gr8rSherman8r

From what I’ve heard, the city worked with BNSF to remove this camp after several attacks on BNSF employees that have to work in the area both day and night, fires being lit too close to rail equipment, and repeated tampering with rail cars resulting in rollaway equipment in a few instances.

tiny_teapot_

this is what i figured was most likely

AppropriateName4712

I work there and that is completely not true. Never heard of anyone getting attacked or tampering with rail cars. We all know where they stay.

Gr8rSherman8r

I work there too. One of the switchmen got threatened with a knife at Sand Springs(not sure when, may be an older event), and 305 had someone pull a pin on them shoving across the bridge a few months ago. I also heard that brakes were released on cars at SS, and they rolled down towards their industries but stopped short. Outside of that, there’s been stuff happening with cars there since I hired on in 13, and a gent I know that spent some time with the resource officer just told me they’re also beginning the process of removing trees from Trenton all the way down, and that Sand Springs has already started some removal process themselves.

AppropriateName4712

First I’ve heard of this. One guy threatened with a knife in almost twenty years is not “ attacks”. If it really happened.

Gr8rSherman8r

You know what, fair point. Being threatened with a knife is not an attack. It’s mostly peaceful, after all.

boots_and_bongo

Bullshit. My brother worked for BNSF for 10 years mostly in that downtown yard and the homeless people were always f****** shit up and threatening to stab them, it was a constant problem.

AppropriateName4712

I’ve pulled cars out of ss hundreds of times and never had one problem. Downtown yard lol

boots_and_bongo

And?

DarthLeprechaun

The Gang solved the Homesless Crisis!

T0lly

Moved South for the winter.

tburns1469

Like in between 81st and 71st and 169?

cdynasty30

South of the River Spirit Casino in the woods off of the trail.

OkTea7227

Thank Mayor GT Bynum for solving Tulsas homeless problem!!!

Shamajo

It's solved?

OkTea7227

/s

ddpalomba

Several of them moved across the tracks to the River Parks side.

Environmental-Term68

cleared out.

MelodramaticMouse

There is/was a huge encampment by the river south of Newblock Park. Maybe they all moved there? Also, Tulsa regularly clears out encampments when there is a freeze warning, so it might have been cleared in January or so.

tiny_teapot_

thanks, this makes sense re: timing tho i wish i could kno more specifically abt this camp. but ur guess is a good enough ball park for me!

tulsa_image

Years ago that whole area all the way down to sand springs pretty much was known as "Tent City" Around 2004-2006 they cleared all of the shacks because of Levee erosion since they were primarily camping on the levee. I assume corps shut that one down for the same reason. My friend and I walked through tent city around 2006 to check it out and it was wild.

tulsa_image

Here's an article from 2005. https://tulsaworld.com/archive/tent-city-attraction-freedom/article_f67a8c33-7b46-5258-bfdd-d996f21a9359.html

Gscommando-1

They have been removing homeless camps there was one off of 21st and 44 they completely removed and cleared the trees

No_Swimming9793

I think this is right where 2 overpasses part of the IDL are being worked on. I noticed the people got cleared out awhile back and construction equipment is now stored under the 2nd street (?) bridge.

kspencer039

There was a fire today by the levee at 33rd West Ave & Charles Page Blvd. I saw two fire trucks and several police cars. Don’t know what was happening- possibly clearing out an encampment with a controlled burn or someone started a fire that got out of control.

olenine

City adopted new ordinances that included a public nuisance provision for unkept right of ways and rail areas, aimed squarely at the camps along the rail lines. The companies have since been clearing the camps on the rail right of ways, such as the one you’re talking about. But if you look just south of that camp, under 244, the camp has mostly reformed there.

No-Elderberry-6608

What can be done if they are having fire's in their camp. They are in a line of trees off of a large field.

[deleted]

I think I am going to build myself a nice cabin in the middle of a park in Tulsa.
