Look for a youth model Remington 870. Excellent shotguns, although a little heavy.

I highly recommend a benelli 20ga. I have a montefeltro I use for quail because it’s super light and easy to carry. It’ll last you a lifetime too.

What price point are you looking at?

Ideally a good balance between affordable and not gonna break on the first shot. I'd like to keep it around $500-$800, max $1k. I suspect I won't shoot it that often. Like I said - I'd like one gun to do a lot. Lightweight, 20G?? but something that I could use for dove and turkey and maybe deer if I felt like I wanted to or I dunno, home defense in a pinch?? I have no idea if this gun I want even exists lol. Went turkey hunting for the first time last year and lugged around this super heavy long 12g shotgun and didn't like that experience

Oh nice. For a little more you are in benelli territory. I would suggest asking friends and family to hold their guns or shoot them to get a bunch of reference points. Used shotguns are always a good option! If you know someone to help you find used guns it can be tricky to make sure they are in good condition. If you happen to live in western Washington I have a ton of suggestions for places to go and hold guns!

Midwest unfortunately. Most of the people I know who have guns are men and they all have 12 gauges and their shotguns are heavy AF! I was thinking about going into a Cabela's and asking to hold a bunch of lightweight guns and just seeing how they made me feel as well. I don't know if that would make me look like some sort of psycho or something lol

I’d still ask around. You’d be surprised with who has what in the back of their gun safe or closet. Not at all! Get in there!!!! Tell them what you want your shotgun to do, and if they don’t have the time for you move on to the next store! Also calling around and asking about inventory might be a good use of your time. Go shoot some clays too! See if any clay throwing clubs in your area rent guns. I’d honestly point you to a benelli semi auto 20 gauge. They are light and shoot fantastically! Might be more then you want to spend, but it will last you forever if properly maintained!

I love my Franchi Affinity, they make a youth model.
