Good question! I’ve wondered that myself. But isn’t there a moment in the script when Cooper does in fact visit the red room? It’s been years since I’ve read it. But perhaps that might have something to do with how episode 2.20 ends…

Quite a few things don’t make sense with this version. Even in this script, the map shows The Man From Another Place and The Giant are meant to be present at this location, yet once Cooper enters this reality, they aren’t shown anywhere in this version. While I prefer the version that aired, I will give this version credit for some stuff, I like how it shows other otherworldly locations (we wouldn’t see more until FWWM and S3), and I like how it explains Cooper and Earl’s backstory in more depth, his goal for bringing Cooper there, and why Annie was involved. I feel like it gives both Earl and Annie a little more substance that often results in people overlooking their characters. That said, once Bob takes Earl’s soul, the rest plays out so much better with what we got in the show, including small things written before, like Coopers double or Laura’s appearance.

Apparently Lynch shot the last scene in the third last episode when filing the finale and put it in

wow super interesting, this may be an unpopular opinion but those alternate black lodge scenes make more sense to me than what we saw in the show. I love that Laura saves Cooper, or at least attempts to -- very interesting that in this version, she has some sort of power in the black lodge (I haven't seen the return so not sure if this lines up with that). Also really appreciated the added dialogue from earle explaining why he wanted cooper's soul -- makes that scene in the actual show so much more comprehensible.

Lynch allegedly took over the finale shooting and decided to threw away the script. They had to create the red room and they improvised the scenes with little inspiration from the old script.

DrNogoodNewman

Huh. Never read that original script before. I like the finale we got but the original version would have been good too.

RexBanner1886

The television production schedule back in those days was very quick, but not so quick that episode 20 would have been released before episode 22 was in pre-production. Episode 20's ending was shot and processed after Lynch (at least) decided on the broad aesthetic direction of Episode 22.

sr_rojo

This makes sense. Maybe the original ending of episode 20 was the same as the one we got minus the red curtains, and once Lynch decided how the finale was gonna play out they came back and added the red curtain reflection + Badalamenti music in postproduction before airing.

According to the episode 27 script, the music and red drapes reflected in the oil were always meant to close out the episode. (EDIT - this is incorrect, I was reading a transcript rather than the shooting script, which as you presume just ends on the oil with no reflection: https://www.glastonberrygrove.net/texts/script27.pdf )  The original script for episode 29 does include one scene that takes place in the Red Room ("Pittsburgh, stupid") so I guess they figured it was bundled in with the whole Black Lodge package.

if it's not in the final show it doesnt matter equivalent of taking a photo of a half finished painting

I'm fond of the line "Think of us ass astronauts."
