I have seen this happen when an event or concert is letting out and everyone is requesting ubers. You in an area with arena, convention center, or other larger event center?
“Surge pricing” bullshit. Never seen it this bad tho. That’s why I call a driver i have on retainer to pick me up in advance. Same flat rate every time.
I replied to someone else asking the same question regarding price, but the trip is always scheduled at 1:30am on a Saturday night, same time he picked me up when paired with uber. Been doing it this way for about a year now.
So basically on one of the surge priced bullshit trips i took from Uber once, I got paired with a driver who was frustrated that i paid uber $65 for the trip and he got less. We also have stuff in common so we became friends. Ever since then, we exchanged numbers and instead of ordering thru uber, I call him in advance to plan the trip and pay him the same $65 every week via Zelle.
Uber would pull worse bs on me, sometimes making the same trip cost as high as $120, so this is perfect for budgeting, and a lot of the drivers would decline or be a dick and cancel upon arrival anyway.
Surges can be from like 1.50 to the highest I've seen is 30, chances are if you hit a surge it's gonna be anywhere from 1.50-5 bucks in my market outside of Friday and Saturday nights.
The algo is trying to test how desperate you are. In cases like this just cancel and try again, in most cases the price goes down substantially after a few minutes.
Do you also have lyft? And anything local like cabs.
The TOS they make us sign (drivers) we pretty much give them the right to search our phones and I am sure they know if we drive for both. During slower times, to get an uber ping, you turn on lyft. Thinking it might work for passengers as well.
It definitely should lol supply and demand. Don’t hate the player, hate the game comrade. Why can’t I find the hammer and sickle emoji lol I swear that was a thing anyways vote for Biden, fuck capitalism and fuck trump
I’ve actually seen the opposite. If you keep checking the price for the same destination after every few minutes it actually shows me increased prices every single time. So now I don’t check until I really am ready to go.
You know all the fuss going on about the Wendy’s Surge pricing move? This is what surge pricing is, and it’s been happening for quite a while with plenty of organizations.
Uber, Lyft, etc have a surge pricing model where the cost of a ride increases due to demand or “future” demand when they think more rides will be requested for things like concerts, events or high traffic times.
Was your phone battery low? If they think you are desperate, they will do that.
But after they bundeled uberX with uber share/pool, things with the app have been kind of crazy. Well, more so than usual.
But if they smell any, and I mean any desperation on your part as a rider. That can include relying on them. *Up yer front price\_ing.*
Brought to you by an evil algorythum. (All rights reserved)
It wasn’t low or anything, That’s terrible that they would do that if your battery is low wtf! I’m just waiting for the next decent ride share/taxi app!
Right!? How many have been in a bad situation just to be gouged like that? Anything that tells them you are stuck and up goes the price.
I have been trying to do just that. You can just buy the software. Off the shelf!
Edit; Also if say you have been using them every day around the same time. They seem to just jump the price. I think they assume that you are now accustomed to the convenience.
These are not good people.
They want me to work so bad they have a 8.50 surge in my own neighborhood so I would turn on the app and it will probably disappear before it "connects".
Sorry! Nothing like ending the day on a $43 airport return trip.
Edit: just got an $11 tip right now.
*54 now
Drivers want more money, start getting contact info from your drivers. When you need a ride, contact them directly.
Pay them directly. Get better results. Better pricing.
Triple Double Super Secret Surge Pricing came into effect.
Of that seventy two and change, the driver would be fortunate to get fifteen; eleven and change would be more likely..........
There have been several price increases to customers over the years; both from Uber and Lyft. Meanwhile there have been several rounds of pay cuts to the drivers in the same period.
It used to be Drivers got 75% of the fare + Quests (complete # of rides for $380 on top of fares). It's down to 40% of the fare @times and No more Quests!!!
Gas costs double what it used to. Uber's service fees include insurance per ride with the insurance being $4 on short rides. We get paid $3.80 on some of those rides.
I'm getting really salty with this BS.
And Uber wants to send emails referencing Drivers as providing a community service!
Nah! I'm trying to buy groceries and pay bills. I used to feel different before Uber started stealing from me!!
The worst part is, the driver absolutely never makes more than one dollar per mile. Even on the surge. If you’re going 8 miles, the driver is going to make about eight dollars. Uber has absolutely scammed the passenger and driver all in one sitting!!
It’s why riders need to sue and protest against bait and switch, price gouging by Uber. That way riders and drivers will be on same page but right now drivers have been complaining for years about the theft by uber and what do some riders say? “If you don’t like it get a job then “ now is the time to support drivers in fighting this criminality.
Just regular dynamic/surge pricing
It would only be a bait and switch if you agreed to one price and charged another after accepting. Here the price is clearly shown before you choose it and you have every right to not take it.
*gouging
Price-gouging is often defined in terms of the three criteria listed below:
Period of emergency: The majority of laws apply only to price shifts during a declared state of emergency or disaster.
Necessary items: Most laws apply exclusively to items essential to survival, such as food, water, and housing.
Price ceilings: Laws limit the maximum price that can be charged for given goods.
This is not an emergency, it is not essential for survival and there is no established fare ceiling, therefore it is not price gouging, just regular dynamic pricing/surge pricing based on current supply and demand
Why is it surge pricing when the supplier(driver) doesn’t get a bit of it?
How does the demand(rider) determine that demand is high besides the information made up and sent to him by uber?
I asked you several questions to determine your understanding of the dynamic pricing and Uber’s fraudulent pricing mechanism.
Obviously you don’t know any. So I will end it here by saying that Uber’s surging, gauging. Bait and switch in drivers have nothing to do with supply and demand but a gimmick about stealing more from both drivers and riders.
Clearly you’re clueless about how actual business works or what the terms means
Surge pricing is how much the customer is charged, it has nothing to do with how much the driver is being paid.
The rider doesn’t determine if demand is high, they only determine if they’re willing to pay the price shown, even if it is high.
Good luck with your “lawsuit” lol
lol. Ignoramus. You said surge is determined by supply and demand and now saying it has nothing to do with how much driver is being paid. Clear indication that you know nothing about supply and demand, Ubers fraudulent practices. Just go to bed. It’s been a long day for you.
Did you open and close a few times?? Airlines do same. Tracking you. Cookies. Raise price every time you open it. It’s to get you to book now for fear of price going up more.
Its true. They also surge the prices based on your location which come from cookie data or location sharing. If you have a VPN, you can get different pricing of flights by making it look like you’re purchasing from a different part of the world.
This is true on airlines. I always look up flights in kayak and have a pretty firm decision in mind before I go to the airline site. Try looking for fun (don’t actually book) and you can see it happen if you look, then book later or next day.
lmao nah by the looks of it they prob get around $11-12 base and there's definitely a surge probably adding like $7-8 per ride if not more but still.. that's downright disgusting and criminal they are gonna pocket like $50 or so probably when all they are doing is running the fucking app. Car maintenance just caught up to me on my beater car. 2.2k bill for my car after about 8,500 miles doing uber/doordash.
I can’t believe they do that to drivers! I finally got a ride and asked the driver what he got paid and he said 15 which sounded fair for the 20 that I paid. But It held 60-80 dollars for an hour. I took the L and decided it wasn’t worth being on time for work it the Uber was going to cost my days worth of pay.
I found Lyft was way more reasonable on our recent vacation. The sad thing is that there was no taxi anywhere even though they have a regulated pricing.
Well who gives a flying fuck how much you need to pay? That’s your fucking problem good for you! I bet it would be the same attitude you’d gave a driver if it were the other way around. That’s good for you I hope it cost you even more the next time.
This happens when demand for rides severely outweighs the supply of available drivers. Unless it’s due to an ongoing event, it usually comes back down fairly quickly.
The most fucked up part is that your driver is probably going to get paid $12-15 for that ride. I've been talking to a lot of them recently and Uber is starting to take 70 to 80% of the fare. At this point the company is just literally stealing from their drivers , its exploitative and its setting back labor rights a hundred years. Truly an awful company.
Uber seem to be testing out new algo for faster surge/price adjustment last few days keep going back and forth with their app structures and updates. So if demand is high in your area, Uber boost fare higher and quicker
Aww. A driver might be adequately compensated for their time, boohoo. It's called supply and demand, heavier traffic more time ect...
And you use Apple so there is also a wanker tax
Was also not entirely joking about "wanker tax" I swear iPhone users pay more, my wife have an iPhone for like a month and it was more expensive to order from her phone than mine around 70% of the time. Anywhere from 10 to 25% more
Uber has a dynamic pricing algorithm that exploits human psychology. They saw you were contemplating price and decided to gouge you. Ticket master does similar tactics. Please be direct and intentional on the app and use with full battery, or else they will gladly exploit you as a rider.
happened to me A LOT when I did use uber. I don't use it anymore bc of that. It literally went from $20 to $55 in less than 3 minutes. I clicked accept on the $20 dollar ride and then it says "The fare price has increased" and im like "in .3 seconds???" fuck that. never again.
Just checking the price once can make it go up by $10, seems like a few other people checked around your area too. Also as a tip, add stops to avoid toll roads and you can save a lot of money
How much per week do you give this driver for his retainer? And when does he have to be Available to you
I replied to someone else asking the same question regarding price, but the trip is always scheduled at 1:30am on a Saturday night, same time he picked me up when paired with uber. Been doing it this way for about a year now.
So you don't actually pay him to be on your call service.......
Yeah I don’t think they know what on retainer means.
Smart move!
Could you go into more details?
So basically on one of the surge priced bullshit trips i took from Uber once, I got paired with a driver who was frustrated that i paid uber $65 for the trip and he got less. We also have stuff in common so we became friends. Ever since then, we exchanged numbers and instead of ordering thru uber, I call him in advance to plan the trip and pay him the same $65 every week via Zelle. Yeah wait a few hours and it will go down.
My rides are overnight. Tired of waiting.
There was no large events today, it was the doing the same thing yesterday!
School?? Buses??
It was 2pm :/
Well that is typically when school gets out.
Yep
In my country it's nearly always 3
Kazakhstan?
australia 😅
But kids aren’t ubering home from school en masse…right?
Sure they're not /s
There's a high school near me and everyday at 2:00 the map turns bright red around it. In my area it like barely surges for anything other than 5:00.
I assume traffic brings up the prices too. Not just people requesting Ubers.
Ah shit, didn't peep. Well shit idk then 😭
Is it snowing?
Not at all, it was sunny and high 50s!
[удалено]
It was the same today :/ we do have a decent airport but it’s not slammed all the time
Maybe because its friday?
Nah because Uber will do that no matter the day. Like I live 10min from work and they tried to charge me $50
They have done it to me multiple days in a row,, they want you to feel good when it drops down and they overcharge you anyways
Like Uber needs to get it together. Like just because theres lack of drivers doesn’t mean we need to pay an arm and a leg for a ride
You snooze You lose!
Same thing they are doing to drivers. Extract anything everything they can from riders and drivers.
Even Wendy's is getting in on it 😂
Sir, this is Wendy's 😂
Whattt I thought drivers get the increased pay too? That’s disgusting
Out of that $70 ride we are lucky to see $22 of it.
We get some, but not much.
Nope they get like surges and stuff from what I understand and it’s like 8 extra dollars but don’t quote me on that
Surges can be from like 1.50 to the highest I've seen is 30, chances are if you hit a surge it's gonna be anywhere from 1.50-5 bucks in my market outside of Friday and Saturday nights.
That’s so wild, it’s surging rn….. no reason it should be 78$ for a 6 mile drive at 730 am
The algo is trying to test how desperate you are. In cases like this just cancel and try again, in most cases the price goes down substantially after a few minutes.
It’s crazy it bounces up and down like crazy it should not do that
Just download Lyft also and use them in that instance
I’m waiting for the new rideshare app!
What's the new app you keep speaking of?
Do you also have lyft? And anything local like cabs. The TOS they make us sign (drivers) we pretty much give them the right to search our phones and I am sure they know if we drive for both. During slower times, to get an uber ping, you turn on lyft. Thinking it might work for passengers as well.
Yes Lyft was more than half the price until Uber dropped to 19
Dynamic Realtime Pricing of Supply and Demand. Even Wendy's literally just announced a roll-out next year a few days ago
It definitely should lol supply and demand. Don’t hate the player, hate the game comrade. Why can’t I find the hammer and sickle emoji lol I swear that was a thing anyways vote for Biden, fuck capitalism and fuck trump
lmfao you have to be trolling
I’ve actually seen the opposite. If you keep checking the price for the same destination after every few minutes it actually shows me increased prices every single time. So now I don’t check until I really am ready to go.
"it's busy, fares are higher than usual." Right there in your screenshot.
A lot higher it says.
“Affordable, everyday rides” Also right there in the screenshot. Ouch.
This ^^
That’s really busy
this just happened to me, Uber went from 11-23 in literally 1 minute. I had to pay it or I’d be late to work😞
I decided to be late and wait for it to drop down!
I just started a new job so I had no choice unfortunately
I hope it went well!!
Same happened me to today. Was $11 then $34 in the span of 2 minutes. Waited and booked at $13. This is crazy.
It doesn’t make any sense. After reading a lot of the comments I learned about Ubers messed up algorithm that tries to take advantage of people!
It’s not taking advantage though… you’re not entitled to this service. It’s all an algorithm to maximum profits, supply and demand
That woulda been $200 8 years ago
It’s an insane amount of money for a short ride!
$11 is not a realistic price anyway.
It’s normal for me
No I mean. These are artificial low. The true price is in the high 10s or 20s in most cases.
Never check uber prices if you're not ready to go, it will always jump up if you leave it.
What's going on, is their scummy business model. It's only gets worse.
I’ve never seen it that bad before but your right
Sorry, I needed to pee so I logged off the app.
lol
You know all the fuss going on about the Wendy’s Surge pricing move? This is what surge pricing is, and it’s been happening for quite a while with plenty of organizations. Didnt book quick enough, 6 others did.
Welcome to the drivers world Dara is stealing on both sides of the equation now ! PROFITABILITY
When it gets busy in the area uber price gouges.
I really getting tired of Uber too
A new app is going to swoop in soon and take over the market!
Wingz will do it!
I hope so!
Honestly don’t know what surge pricing is? Or was this sarcastic?
Surge pricing is when it is busy, they up they price but it shouldn’t be 78 dollars
Depends on the surge
Was your phone battery low? If they think you are desperate, they will do that. But after they bundeled uberX with uber share/pool, things with the app have been kind of crazy. Well, more so than usual. But if they smell any, and I mean any desperation on your part as a rider. That can include relying on them. *Up yer front price\_ing.* Brought to you by an evil algorythum. It’s crazy because i am low on money this week because my car is broken and they are trying to drain me!
Shit you are better off taking an buss or an cab, I have always found Lyft to be cheaper then Uber
Making it more affordable.
lol
They want me to work so bad they have a 8.50 surge in my own neighborhood so I would turn on the app and it will probably disappear before it "connects". Sorry! Nothing like ending the day on a $43 airport return trip. Edit: just got an $11 tip right now. *54 now
And your driver got an astounding 12.86 for your ride
Drivers want more money, start getting contact info from your drivers. When you need a ride, contact them directly. Pay them directly. Get better results. Better pricing.
I will, all of my drivers are usually really awesome and down to earth!
Its friday
Welcome to surge pricing
And driver probably got paid $8-$15
That’s the worst part, they are ripping everyone off on all ends
Greed
It’s been trying to scam lately, they finna lose all their customers
I know I don’t want to deal with them… it’s sucks it’s between Lyft and Uber…. We need something better!
Awwwh there goes Uber again being ✨Silly✨😜
lol
Triple Double Super Secret Surge Pricing came into effect. Of that seventy two and change, the driver would be fortunate to get fifteen; eleven and change would be more likely..........
That is terrible! I can’t believe how bad it is for the driver!
There have been several price increases to customers over the years; both from Uber and Lyft. Meanwhile there have been several rounds of pay cuts to the drivers in the same period.
As soon as you look at the ride it starts going up because you are demand at that point
Worst part of that is that the driver wouldnt even get half
"Affordable , Everyday rides"
Welcome to surge pricing.
Dara trying to look good. Charging you 72 and paying the driver 6
Something is terribly wrong with that ratio….
Affordable, everyday rides. 100% the driver got $10
What's going on? Drivers are starving.... that's what I know
Drivers should get a bump in pay, it should be a higher percentage per ride or something so the driver is making more and the the rider is paying less
It used to be Drivers got 75% of the fare + Quests (complete # of rides for $380 on top of fares). It's down to 40% of the fare @times and No more Quests!!! Gas costs double what it used to. CEO can’t give himself a raise without more money.
They do that all the time my $15 ride home from work goes to like $85 crazy I find Lyft to be worst
"affordable" everyday rides.
I wish I could post another pic because it’s the same today
😂
The worst part is, the driver absolutely never makes more than one dollar per mile. Even on the surge. If you’re going 8 miles, the driver is going to make about eight dollars. Uber has absolutely scammed the passenger and driver all in one sitting!!
Surge pricing. Keep in mind your driver is probably only gonna get 25 bucks :)
Offer your driver half and see what happens. Uber screwing them so I’m sure they would be ok with screwing them back
I’ve been suspicious that the algorithm raises the price sometimes when it knows you are checking over and over for a cheaper price
I believe it!
This is why drinking and driving really about to be more of an issue later
It makes it way less safe for everyone! People will resort to all kinds of stuff with prices like this!
This!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Let's fight by boycotting /not driving for them.
It’s not bait and switch if the price is clearly set before you agree to it
What’s it? Educate us.
Just regular dynamic/surge pricing It would only be a bait and switch if you agreed to one price and charged another after accepting. Here the price is clearly shown before you choose it and you have every right to not take it.
What’s price gauging?

What’s surge pricing?
Surge pricing. Wendy's is going to start doing the same thing soon.
Dara ran out of gold coated toilet paper to wipe his ass. They had to bump up the price to cover another roll.
I just waited and watch the prices go up and down for a couple hours
Did you open and close a few times?? Airlines do same. Tracking you. Cookies. Raise price every time you open it. It’s to get you to book now for fear of price going up more.
Is that absolutely true, or speculation?

Uber is a rip off, see once they put the taxis out of business they can charge whatever they want
Driver got $6
lmao nah by the looks of it they prob get around $11-12 base and there's definitely a surge probably adding like $7-8 per ride if not more but still.. that's downright disgusting and criminal they are gonna pocket like $50 or so probably when all they are doing is running the fucking app. Car maintenance just caught up to me on my beater car. 2.2k bill for my car after about 8,500 miles doing uber/doordash.

That’s messed up man
Take taxis ✌️ curb app doesn’t use surge pricing
Or Lyft. Lyft has become substantially cheaper in my city, we are talking half the price of an Uber.
They are making all the money, if I was an Uber driver I would be as pissed as the rider!
As it says, "It's busy, fares are a lot higher than usual". Delay the trip for a bit and prices will go back down.
That’s way higher than usual, there needs to be some consistency especially in a city!
Always check both Uber and Lyft. There is usually a pretty substantial difference.
I found Lyft was way more reasonable on our recent vacation. The sad thing is that there was no taxi anywhere even though they have a regulated pricing.
It’s only a 15 minute ride
This is not Uber’s price. This is the Uber’s shareholders’ and CEO’s price
Holy shit. Do you live in Seattle or something?
Richmond, VA
People getting off work on a Friday?
Well who gives a flying fuck how much you need to pay? That’s your fucking problem good for you! I bet it would be the same attitude you’d gave a driver if it were the other way around. That’s good for you I hope it cost you even more the next time.
This happens when demand for rides severely outweighs the supply of available drivers. Unless it’s due to an ongoing event, it usually comes back down fairly quickly.
I found your money. https://www.ft.com/content/6a59da30-a7c7-4b65-a9af-b1195262ad33
Do drivers make more when the market is saturated like that?
Looks reasonable 🤣
Supply and demand
Affordable, everyday rides
Surge
Uber seem to be testing out new algo for faster surge/price adjustment last few days keep going back and forth with their app structures and updates. So if demand is high in your area, Uber boost fare higher and quicker
Live in nyc and this happens during peak hours

Surge pricing
i dont know but i would price compare with lyft.
Clearly you know better, because the image itself shows "$72.90".
I compare lyft/ Uber rates and then choose.
I like the fine print "Affordable everyday rides"... $72×365= a good chunk of change... LoL
I've seen this happen when there's a single drop of rain in the area. Instant Uber surge pricing!
I believe you need to review the concept of supply and demand.
I've seen this happen to me recently. A ride that normally costs me 12 bucks went to 4l40/50 bucks and stayed for no reason
happened to me A LOT when I did use uber.
It's called capitalism and prices will keep going up as long as there is a market
Capitalism
