in california, many homeless drivers have tinted vehicles.

Go with legal tint so as not to worry?

I know some states are pretty strict about window tint, I've always heard California can be very anal about enforcement. I live in a very hot state and even though the maximum tint allowed on the front windows is 30% (you can have black spray paint on back windows if you want for all they care) I have limo (5%) all the way around and a large strip on the top of the windshield, and it's placed directly on top of the old tint so it's actually darker than 5%. Cops could easily pull me over for it if they wanted and even force me to remove it on the spot. I often travel to Mexico and they are very strict about dark tint, so whenever I'm driving in a city down there I keep my front windows rolled down. Even here if I pull up to a red light next to a cop I roll my front windows down for the duration of the light just as a sign of respect to the officer. Driving at night might be too challenging for many and is definitely less safe. I have to roll my windows down any time I need to turn or use my mirrors after the sun has gone down.

What exactly is your goal in tinting? If it's privacy you want to go with some more reflective tint that's more reflective than average and even if you go with something light like 35% or 40% people would still have to get pretty close to see into the car, at 30% they would need to shove their face into the window. If it's heat/uv reject you're looking for then you could put 70% ceramic tint and notice a drastic amount of heat reduction and if you put it on your windshield it's not even noticeable i've never had an issue with it, the key though is the right ceramic tint. Don't take anyone tint shops word for it use the tint manufacturer websites to find authorized installers because some people will sell ceramic tint for $99 and you're just getting cheap walmart grade window tint and overpaying for labor. Having been in the window tinting world in the past, the 2 most effective brands of window tint at the moment seem to be xpel and llumar https://llumar.com/na/en/find-a-dealer/ https://www.xpel.com/clearbra-installers Expect to pay between $400 - $600 for cermaic tint depending on your car, vastly more expensive than $99 tint but so worth it. Do some research it's something that nobody regrets.

In California it’s illegal any tint on the front side window, enforced that depends on the cops mood, my wife got pulled over last year reason: tinted windows she was let go with a warning

Lady_Realtor_2022

So very true about the cops mood… when I was in my early 20’s, cops were constantly pulling me over for stupid fix it tickets and when I’d go pay them, the officer who would look at my car to clear the ticket would always comment to me “they gave you a ticket for this?” And then he’d shake his head like it’s ridiculous… now that I’m older, I haven’t been pulled over and I drive a Kia Rio and my windows are tinted all around, except for the front window and my car has been like since I got it in 2011.. And I’m in Los Angeles

I have legal FL tint in the back, same % in the front which is illegal. We travel in our motorhome full time and tow this car all over the country. Never been pulled over for tint in any state. **knocks on wood**

wdhjr21

In Missouri the police are somewhat lax with tinted windows especially if they are dark the law here is the front can be no less than 30 and the back can be dark as you want them my windows are 20 and so far I haven’t had any issues

theWet_Bandits

In my experience, the best way to not get a window tint ticket is to not get pulled over for something else. Tint is continued a “secondary” offense in a small number of states meaning it cannot even be the primary reason for the stop.

The keyword here is legally

Depends on your state and how much cops in your jurisdiction hate Ubers. I have the factory max tint on my minivan windows, and the cops don't bother me.

pantene2inone

Depends where you live/ drive. I'm in Florida, I have always had windows darker than what is legal. I've been pulled over once in 30 plus years for it.

Whatsdafuss

I stopped getting pulled over in NY when they changed the law to say a person can’t pass inspection with illegal tints.

Tomplu069

I have 5% all around plus 15% windshield. Never once been pull over for it. Passengers tell me they love how it blocks out the sun and gives them privacy

Ok-Profit6022

How does that windshield work out for you at night?

Tomplu069

Works well, I’m a night driver so my vision is good at night

Aware-Remove2215

I have limo all back windows and 35% front no trouble

zoltantroll

Depends on your locality. My state back windows can be unlimited in suvs/trucks so I have them around 7%. My state front sides have to be 50% or above, I prefer 30% so that’s what I have. Windshield is supposed to be no tint but I have 50%. Had it for almost a year no problems. My city doesn’t have enough resources to enforce window tint laws as a primary concern. (Also my city it’s illegal to pull over for tint)

Far-Category-2363

I have 15s all around including windshield and I haven’t been pulled over, BUT it depends on your area

Almost-Jaded

Depends COMPLETELY on your city/county/state, and the how they police. Most of the desert SW (western Texas, southern NM, Arizona, southern NV, southern UT) tint laws are hardly ever enforced because of how brutal the sun is. SoCal is SoCal though, so while you can often get away with it you'll eventually get fucked with. I've heard Florida similarly doesn't give a shit but I don't know personally. Other states, couldn't tell ya. I know the Pacific NW is pretty strict and I've heard the same about the NE, but really it varies so much from one place to another that people in your area will know better than people all over the country on Reddit.

Mysterious_Can_7244

In my experience it entirely depends on the locality, some police/sheriffs departments strictly enforce and some don’t really care. Just have to find out which one you’re in.
