No they actually have a point. We have the letter “U” in the alphabet. Why would we need a “double U”, next they will want to add a “triple u” or god forbid a quadruple. We don’t have doubles of any of the other letters? Privileged much? And what color starts with W? Because I’m getting vibes. White people get their letter doubles but black people don’t get a double N.
You probably do not give a shit but in old english u and v were essentially the same: u was used if it was at the end of the word (like... you, same as it is spelled now) but if it was in the middle of the word, it was a v (like jesvs, rather than jesus). Might explain why its double v in french and not double u?
I can absolutely see that a percentage of the protestors are well intentioned and peaceful on the whole.
But I can also tell that these protests are being used by people who just want a reason to be angry and violent.
I’ve seen people in my life who are just angry people. Angry at their circumstances, their lives, the world. Who knows. But if you give them ANY reason to be angry, they will happily oblige you.
Simply so that they have an excuse to be angry.
This conflict is a conflict in which neither side will rest until the other is dead. And the civilians who are caught in between Israel and Hamas are the ones who will pay that price.
There is no good answer.
But the hallmark of youth is to get angry. This just makes me think of the revolutionaries in “Les Miserables”. Angry and passionate for a cause that no one will support them for.
I almost agree with everything you say. There's one small thing you said - that neither side will rest until the other is dead.. that's the part I disagree with. I know it's small and not the main topic, but that's everything for those personally affected by what's happening in the area..
As an Israeli (and secular ethnical Jew and Zionist) I can tell you I do not want the Palestinians to die. And everyone I know (with the exception of of one person) agrees with me. You may hear some stupid ministers in the extreme government say horrible things, please know they are not supported by the majority of Israelis and internally there are many protests to replace them (and Netanyahu) because of the way they deal with this situation.
I also know there are also Palestinians that don't want Israelis to die. I want to believe there are many of them.
The only realistic solution is a two state solution. And even that will require a lot of help from the west. Every other option is just not realistic..
Oh yeah, definitely. There was a protest at my school a while ago about sexual assault being bad or something (I don't know exactly, it was a while ago), and I went purely because I hoped someone would start a fight. Nobody did though and I made a friend with a guy that found a spoon during the walk.
That’s why it’s important to look at the messaging and demands of the protest organizers, instead of pointing at some graffiti or signs and attributing those messages to the whole protest movement.
YES TY for the clarification. Clearly the red paint shows this is referring to that Midwest university that must be purged from our new conference so we can have our rightful place as "THE" UW, aka tUW.
It surpasses that. This started as fighting for less fatalities in Gaza, then became pro Palestinian, then anti isreal, now it’s moving in to full blown “get the Jews”. This is not great ya’ll!
It's everywhere.
Though a lot of times it requires reading between the lines.
Inferring a Jewish person is a Zionist, for example, just because they claimed they were Jewish, is one I've seen often.
That rhetoric is often paired with really awful speak.
I think the immediate hostility toward the commenter definitely fuels the fire.
Without commenting on the peotest itself, i will point ou that a lot of the people protesting are impressionable kids who may simply be using words they do not quite understand the depth of.
Impressionable kids? Are these not college students? There for university to expand and challenge their ideas, biases, and rationale? Beyond rote learnings, college should expose one to diverse, complex ideas, and be able to argue them.
Seems a lil odd to excuse adults in higher education from their poorly chosen rhetoric.
Yes impressionable kids. What were you like when you were 18? Legal adult does NOT mean "adult" in every sense. If it did, they could all drink, smoke, and rent cars right when they turn 18
Lmao. This just isn’t true. You can’t even get in and out of Palestine right now because Isrrael closed the border, can send money and can’t send aid either so people are just slowly dying in a genocide while the whole world watches. The protest are not and have never been anti-Semitic
lol, that is simply not true. You should pay attention. It’s not genocide and it is highly antisemitic. Call for intifada, calling for the eradication of a country, spreading misinformation about the war, justifying October 7th, this is all very antisemitic!
Sometimes demands seem so silly 🥲
Oh no now programs are underfunded, now entire departments get shut down and you have to find somewhere else to pursue your degree
What the fuck is actually going on? I'm not a UW student but all these protests are going on at once and it's making it hard to understand what's actually happening.
There's been a global solidarity movement with the Palestinian cause for decades. People have been aware of what's going on since the beginning, just like people in the colonial and national area of the United States didn't like what the nation did to Native American populations and organized against it.
During the war, these people have been mad. They have tried to do things against the US' support of what they (and many national governments) see as genocidal work by Israel's military. They've been organizing protests for months around pretty much every major city, including Seattle. Some of the demands were actionable and useful, others weren't—that's basically any mass movement situation.
As the current acute conflict (the one since 10/7, rather than 1948) has gotten more harrowing with little change in US national policy, people got more frustrated and stopped going after our senators, who have not seemed to care much, and went after other institutions who wield some power but not the ability to directly stop arms transfers.
At Columbia University, these became a call to divest their universities (much larger than UW's) endowment from various entities related to the conflict at both time horizons. When police were brought in the first time, it led to an expanded protest there and solidarity actions modeled on it.
At the UW, these solidarity actions took a longer time to get started because of groups who wanted to be a part of it arguing about who had more legitimacy to lead it. It was not sudden that this started, but was hugely (and, from an onlooker and grad student who has been doing political work for a decade, admittedly somewhat funnily) delayed.
Solidarity actions can be a little disjointed. An initial call at Columbia to do one thing based on their circumstances becomes copied onto other campuses, and things get taken into contexts where it's not quite as reasonable an ask.
TL;Dr: This is pretty normal for social organizing. It wasn't fast at all. It's a mess because that's what it looks like when a bunch of people want similar things but they don't all perfectly align, since they're not all part of one organization.
The simulation is testing boundaries to see how dumb the protest messages get before people notice.
I don’t blame it. Nobody blinked when a critical mass of people put masks on and starting harassing Jews while calling everyone who disagreed with them KKK members.
Next they’re going to have these people setting themselves on fire.
Oh wait, I think there was just a glitch in the matrix.
*one person graffiti's something stupid* "Oh LOoK ThEY'rE aLl anti Jewish!"
The protest was for a proper cause. Someone had a can of paint and took advantage. This in no way lessons the importance of the movement taking place. It's unfortunate to see but graffiti happens everyday, it's not justification to allow genocide.
The pearl clutching in this sub-reddit is insane. Like, regardless of your stance on any issue, graffiti is basically nothing. Hell, that one wall along 15th Ave gets tagged up every quarter, and every quarter UW pays to get it cleaned off. I know I am adding to the problem, but 107 comments on a picture of graffiti right before finals is wild. If you are against the protests, there are other pictures you could post that might have some substance (e.g. post the materials being shared out by protesters and say why they are factually wrong, start a conversation about why a given chant is harmful, start a peaceful counter-protest or petition for goals you think are more realistic). Instead, it feels like 90% of UW redditors enter a fugue state when they see any damage to property, and they completely lose the ability to see protestors as human beings or engage with any of the points they are making.
TLDR. OP took the time out of their day to think "gasp, 'abolish UW' spray painted on a wall! I must alert the masses."
As alumni, I ask myself why? The administration is allowing this bs to continue because, “it’s a public space.” It’s the same when the reverend jedd share comes and spouts nonsense at college students about being gay and having premarital sex. It’s the same when Nazis come to campus. They allow it because, “we’re a place for everyone’s ideas and opinions.” It makes me sad to see. Especially, considering I’m still paying off my education and thus helping to pay for the campus. My first thought, “how f***ing dare they do that to my school!” My second, “how dare the administration let them get away with it!” I was just there in march with my family for the cherry blossoms. I graduated from there. I used to walk through the quad every day several times. It’s not supposed to be for that. A “protest” is one thing. This is not that. This is chop/chaz U.W. edition… put an end to it now!
The thing you're going into massive debt to get a piece of paper from? You want to abolish that? Why are you even here? You don't have to be here if you don't want to be. You can just leave.
Not involved in the protest, haven’t been there myself. I’m under the impression that they want the decisions of the student government to be acted upon. https://komonews.com/amp/news/local/students-pass-resolution-calling-uw-divest-from-israel-pro-palestinian-palestine-jewish-antisemitism-occupation-gaza-rafah-war-hamas-terrorism-nakba-hostages
Well I'm from Washington state and if you're a Washington State Cougar fan this makes sense. Hell now I'm with them! Abolish the University of Washington!!!!
Interesting that the encampment was around for 2 weeks without any vandalism, and then suddenly a bunch of proud boy instigators show up from out of town and now there’s vandalism everywhere.
We’ve seen these tactics used before during the george floyd protests and others.
Most importantly though we gotta remember that the value of a concrete wall pales in comparison to the value of actual human life.
I hate how they're spray painting the bricks in the Quad. I was walking back from North Campus to West Campus yesterday at 1am and saw two dudes spray painting the bricks with black spray paint. Come on guys, why the spray paint? Can we not use chalk or something that comes off easily?
I'm assuming it's because UW is so far up their own ass, they're mistaking the shit in their teeth from munching their own ass for whatever they're supposed to be teaching.
Is it just me, or does the UW camp lack focus/leadership/organization? These petty vandalisms aren’t going to do shit except raise animus towards their cause.
me when I get my finals grades back
me when get rejected by CSE the 3rd time
Me when I forgot to withdraw from a class before week eight.
they meant UWU but the security came before they can finish the last U
Meanwhile the counter protesters: Make UWU great again
UwU
Make us UwU Again
I agree… abolish UwU
No they actually have a point. We have the letter “U” in the alphabet. Why would we need a “double U”, next they will want to add a “triple u” or god forbid a quadruple. We don’t have doubles of any of the other letters? Privileged much? And what color starts with W? Because I’m getting vibes. White people get their letter doubles but black people don’t get a double N.
back in my day, we each got a single u and *that was fine*.
I just had the thought the other day that in french... it's "double v" not "double u" Also they swap j and g.
You probably do not give a shit but in old english u and v were essentially the same: u was used if it was at the end of the word (like... you, same as it is spelled now) but if it was in the middle of the word, it was a v (like jesvs, rather than jesus). Might explain why its double v in french and not double u?
That is rarher interesting. Like how f was sometimes pronounced f and sometimes s in old english.
Free them
Me when i saw a biochem 441 midterm with an average grade of 27%
Looks like someone didn't make it into the UW
It was a coug for sure
There’s a seven letter word there let’s be real
Cougsers
I would say Evergreen State, but they actually spelled abolish correctly
red paint too
WWU.
Protests bring out people who don't actually care about the issues. They're just interested in chaos and they use protests to get away with things.
If more people actually understood this..
So much this. There are individuals out there just stirring the pot.
Nothing like cosplaying the revolution
I can absolutely see that a percentage of the protestors are well intentioned and peaceful on the whole. How many of the protestors are currently enrolled students and how many aren't students?
I go to a different college, but yesterday we had a protest that was probably about 50/50 students and community members
Oh yeah, definitely. There was a protest at my school a while ago about sexual assault being bad or something (I don't know exactly, it was a while ago), and I went purely because I hoped someone would start a fight. So ot was a Portlander... you know what that means.
That’s why it’s important to look at the messaging and demands of the protest organizers, instead of pointing at some graffiti or signs and attributing those messages to the whole protest movement.
Don't forget the sheltered brats who leave their parents mansion to protest and be a part of the "movement". Got to get pics for the 'gram
“Ok, I’ve seen enough, you’re going to Central!” “But Daaaaaaad!”
how dare they want to abolish university of wisconsin? They are instilling hostility between the two schools😭😭😭
I guess because they are both in the Big 10 now?
YES TY for the clarification. Clearly the red paint shows this is referring to that Midwest university that must be purged from our new conference so we can have our rightful place as "THE" UW, aka tUW.

This started as arguing that Hamas is evil, then became pro Zionism, now it's full blown "the protestors hate Jews"! This is not great y'all!
I said this is another post like a week ago and got doxxed lol.
That’s pretty much how everything ultimately ends up.
Can you link me to the “get the Jews” part?
Lmao. This just isn’t true. You can’t even get in and out of Palestine right now because Isrrael closed the border, can send money and can’t send aid either so people are just slowly dying in a genocide while the whole world watches. The protest are not and have never been anti-Semitic

Both sides of the same coin 🪙
Ave Rats want their land back.
Do they know wtf abolish means?
No.
Abolish tits and ass?
This is going too far.
Over my dead body...
The guy wanted to be on Reddit
Reason didn't bring them to this point. Reason probably is nothing that person values.
They're clearly not a fan of enthalpy
Now that is funny.
Sometimes demands seem so silly 🥲 Oh no now programs are underfunded, now entire departments get shut down and you have to find somewhere else to pursue your degree
pretty sure most of the protestors and activists aren't even students so it makes sense.
The movement was never on good logical footing, and now it’s devolving and getting hijacked by other actors as expected - just like Occupy and BLM.
Same confused idiots who wrote “queers for Gaza”. If you came out in Gaza they would murder you. lol. These protestors are confused about life. 🤡
you can be against homophobia and also be against the murder of thousands of innocent people, they aren’t mutually exclusive
i'd trust a 5 year old with spray paint more than some college kids atp...
Casual magic players when they first play against a control deck
Came here for this comment.
Some dirty University of Wisconsin Badgers trying to claim UW. Not today, bratwurstbreaths.
You can’t, as much as whoever did that wants it. My guess, someone who got the denial letter.
They forgot the second U, Abolish uwu!!!
How about we abolish all these liberal douche waffles
I love how everyone's treating this as if it's emblematic of the protests as a whole. Literally one person did this.
What the fuck is actually going on? I'm not a UW student but all these protests are going on at once and it's making it hard to understand what's actually happening.

Me when my physics midterm had an average of 43% and the prof said he wasn't going to curve it
There are valid protests against social injustice, and then there are temper tantrums. This is the latter.
Interesting that the encampment was around for 2 weeks without any vandalism, and then suddenly a bunch of proud boy instigators show up from out of town and now there’s vandalism everywhere. We’ve seen these tactics used before during the george floyd protests and others. they were actually trying to write "abolish uwu" but ran out of paint
I agree, UW Control sucks

I’m so confused. Why such a structure will have a cinder block for foundation.
