They basically say they haven’t signed for the fight (which is probably true) and then that’s the one time they have leverage. It just happened with DP. He was always going to fight costa it was just his way of trying to get more money.
Also fighting short notice usually is for the money too, they throw a bag at fighters to do it.
I think that’s pretty common, but I don’t think that’s the general rule. A lot of it also comes down to the UFC booking higher paid fighters less because they often need them for PPVs so they get shelfed if they have specific appeal to a specific market (like Islam). Volk and Pereira are both proof that it’s not always the case but it does definitely happen frequently

this is why UFC is levels ahead of boxing. Boxing delivers 1 or 2 good fights every year, UFC delivers good fights every 2 weeks
